Since Jack Anderson was a child, he has been deeply interested in Chinese culture. When Jack was ten years old, he watched a documentary about Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). The ideas of natural healing (治愈) and balance in the body immediately fascinated him. From then on, he decided to learn more about TCM. He saved his pocket money to buy books about Chinese herbs, acupuncture, which is referred to as “zhen jiu” in Chinese, and other treatments, studying the basics on his own.

It’s been quite a while since the world saw exactly how deadly these deep-sea voyages can be. On June 18,2023, the private submersible(潜水船)Titan carried five men on a mission to view the remains of the Titanic, which is about 400 miles off the coast of Newfoundland. The dive was expected to take a few hours and reach a depth of more than 12,000 feet. But 105minutes after the Titan went down below the waves, it lost contact.
The U. S. and Canadian Coast Guards and the U. S. Navy were called in for a desperate search to rescue the passengers, only to discover the Titan had collapsed inward with no survivors. The disaster dominated global news for weeks, touching off debates: Are human-led deep-sea missions worth their risks and costs?
On social media, some expressed sympathy, while others opposed the effort. Critics labeled the passengers “risk-takers” or “senseless,” and journalists strongly criticised the media focus on wealthy explorers instead of 700 drowned victims in the Aegean Sea. The obloquy continues today—I’ve been targeted myself.
For a decade, I’ve supported undersea exploration, arguing its importance. Critics object that remotely operated machines make human missions unnecessary. Why dive deep when we can study hidden secrets in high-definition from safe offices?
Yet I defend humanity’s drive to explore—the hands-on, unpredictable pursuit that sent us to the moon and across oceans. Without such exploration, scientists can’t confirm theories; nor can journalists share real stories. Through many attempts and mistakes, I’ve learned: To truly describe a subject, you must encounter it. Discovery requires being present.
The path to knowledge is challenging, filled with setbacks and failures. It’s costly and often unrewarding, but that’s exactly why it matters. Trying various approaches—even following uncertain clues—is crucial to discovery. We lose something vital if we abandon the courage to go deep.
8. What was the initial purpose of the Titan’s mission?
A. To test an underwater vehicle.
B. To study undersea creatures.
C. To rescue Aegean Sea victims.
D. To observe the ruins of a ship.
9. What does the underlined word “obloquy” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The occurrence of drowning.
B. The criticism from the society.
C The debate among journalists.
D. The focus on wealthy explorers.
10. How does the author defend the value of deep-sea exploration?
A. By quoting famous scientists.
B. By listing undersea discoveries.
C. By weighing the risks and significance.
D. By emphasizing its economic benefits.
11. What is essential for discovery according to the author?
A. Media coverage.
B. Pure imagination.
C. Secured environment.
D. Direct involvement.
D 9. B 10. C 11. D

根据第一段“On June 18, 2023, the private submersible (潜水船) Titan carried five men on a mission to view the remains of the Titanic (2023 年 6 月 18 日,泰坦号私人潜水船搭载五人执行查看泰坦尼克号残骸的任务)” 可知,“泰坦” 号此次任务的最初目的是查看一艘船(泰坦尼克号)的残骸。
根据第三段“Critics labeled the passengers “risk-takers” or “senseless,” and journalists strongly criticised the media focus on wealthy explorers instead of 700 drowned victims in the Aegean Sea. The obloquy continues today—I’ve been targeted myself.(批评者称乘客为“冒险者”或“没头脑的人”,记者们强烈批评媒体将焦点放在富有的探险者身上,而不是爱琴海中 700 名溺水遇难者。这种…… 今天仍在继续,我自己也成为了目标)” 可知,前文讲述了社会各界的批评,所以 “obloquy” 指的是社会的批评。故选B。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段“Yet I defend humanity’s drive to explore—the hands-on, unpredictable pursuit that sent us to the moon and across oceans. Without such exploration, scientists can’t confirm theories; nor can journalists share real stories. (然而,我捍卫人类探索的动力 —— 这种亲身实践、不可预测的追求让我们登上月球、跨越海洋。没有这样的探索,科学家无法证实种种理论;记者也无法分享真实的故事)”以及最后一段“The path to knowledge is challenging, filled with setbacks and failures. It’s costly and often unrewarding, but that’s exactly why it matters.(通往知识的道路充满挑战,挫折与失败并存。它代价高昂且常常没有回报,但这正是它重要的原因)” 可知,作者通过权衡深海探索的风险和其对科学家、记者等的重要意义来为其价值辩护。故选C。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“Through many attempts and mistakes, I’ve learned: To truly describe a subject, you must encounter it. Discovery requires being present.(通过多次尝试和错误,我明白了:要真正描述一个事物,你必须亲身经历它。发现需要身临其境)” 可知,作者认为对于发现来说,直接参与是至关重要的。故选D。
D
Have you ever wondered why certain songs or paintings feel deeply satisfying? Language expert Jay Keyser’s research finds that repetition makes art speak to us.
Artists like jazz musician Duke Ellington and painter Andy Warhol purposefully use repetition — not simply as copying, but as a clever “same, but different” skill. In Ellington’s Satin Doll, for example, the rhythm repeats while the notes stay high or low, and the song’s words mirror this pattern. Warhol’s soup cans appear alike at first sight, yet each design changes a little. This skill called “same/except” by Jay Keyser in his book Play it again, Sam — makes art feel richer and more pleasant to our brains.
Interestingly, discovering repetition brings much more. Consider a photograph of the US city of Albuquerque that is often discussed for its meaning. Look closer, and you may find that a dog sits in the center with a street sign shadow to its right copying its shape. Recognizing this hidden pattern, as Keyser suggests, repays us with unexpected pleasure and more. Training our eyes to notice such patterns — whether in poetry, paintings or songs — unlocks new meaning.
Why does repetition create such a connection? According to Keyser, science offers an answer: the mere exposure effect Just as a baby grows fond of a mother’s face through repeated sights, we naturally develop a liking for familiar patterns. Advertisers use this by repeating product names to build trust. Artists harness it too — Warhol’s repeated cans or a song’s repeated catchy parts make us feel comforted and connected.
Keyser shows great art works with the brain’s makeup. When artists repeat certain parts with changes, the art is in line with how our minds seek order, expect patterns, and gain joy from “finding” connections — though we are not aware of it. By studying how artists skillfully apply the “same/except” skill across mediums, and by connecting these choices with science, we gain the key to admiring creativity’s universal magic. This makes everyday experiences with music, paintings, and words much richer.
12. What does the “same/ except” skill focus on?
A. Non-traditional artistic styles. B. Combining different art forms.
C. Repetition with slight variations. D. Breaking all patterns completely.
13. What does the example of the Albuquerque photo highlight?
A. Fun designs attract more attention. B. Familiar patterns tends to build trust.
C. Repetition enriches art experiences. D. Famous art deserves lasting discussion.
14. What does the underlined word “harness” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Take advantage of. B. Search for. C. Have control of. D. Figure out.
15. What is the purpose of the last paragraph?
A. To argue repetition in art is necessary. B. To appeal to artists to use more repetition.
C. To show how artists apply repetition skills. D. To illustrate the scientific basis of repetition.
C 13. C 14. A 15. D
根据第二段中“Artists like jazz musician Duke Ellington and painter Andy Warhol purposefully use repetition — not simply as copying, but as a clever “same, but different” skill. (爵士乐演奏家Duke Ellington和画家Andy Warhol这样的艺术家,会有意地运用重复手法——这并非简单的模仿行为,而是一种巧妙的“相同,但不同”的技巧)”以及后文的例子“In Ellington’s Satin Doll, for example, the rhythm repeats while the notes stay high or low, and the song’s words mirror this pattern. Warhol’s soup cans appear alike at first sight, yet each design changes a little. This skill called “same/except” by Jay Keyser in his book Play it again, Sam — makes art feel richer and more pleasant to our brains.
根据第三段中“Interestingly, discovering repetition brings much more. Training our eyes to notice such patterns — whether in poetry, paintings or songs — unlocks new meaning.(有趣的是,发现重复现象所带来的益处远不止于此。
根据第四段中划线词上文“According to Keyser, science offers an answer: the mere exposure effect (单纯曝光效应). (根据Keyser的观点,科学给出了答案:单纯曝光效应)”、“Advertisers use this by repeating product names to build trust.(广告商通过重复产品名称来建立信任)”以及划线词所在句“Artists harness it too — Warhol’s repeated cans or a song’s repeated catchy parts make us feel comforted and connected. (艺术家们也harness它——Warhol重复的罐子或一首歌重复的朗朗上口的部分让我们感到安慰和联系)”可知,广告商和艺术家都利用了单纯曝光效应,harness与文中“use”同义,表示“利用”,与选项中Take advantage of意思一致。故选A。
根据最后一段“Keyser shows great art works with the brain’ makeup. This makes everyday experiences with music, paintings, and words much richer.(Keyser指出,伟大的艺术作品与人类的大脑构造相契合。
The teenage years are marked by intense changes — physical, social, emotional, and developmental — that can be difficult to deal with at times.____16____ As you grow older, conflicts with family often increase, mainly due to the desire for more independence. Peer (同龄人) pressure also plays a major role, as teenagers are more likely to be influenced by friends while testing boundaries and seeking autonomy.
Conflicts during this time can also arise from the intensity of your emotions and your evolving ability to think abstractly. As you work on forming your individual identity, you may become more focused on the world around you, trying to make sense of your own feelings and form opinions on various issues. ____17____ As your outlook changes, these struggles may make it more difficult to navigate relationships with family and cope with peer pressure.
While conflicts are a natural part of this stage of life, there are ways to manage and resolve them productively. ____18____By expressing your thoughts and feelings clearly, you can prevent misunderstandings and build mutual respect. Equally important is active listening — understanding others’ outlook can help you find common ground and reach a resolution.
____19____Staying calm allows you to think more clearly and avoid worsening emotions. Techniques such as deep breathing or temporarily stepping away from the situation can help manage intense feelings. Additionally, turning to trusted adults or peers who have faced similar challenges can help you gain practical strategies for managing emotions.
While conflicts are a normal part of growing up, they can also be opportunities for personal development and self-discovery.____20____
A. Emotional regulation is also essential.
B. The most effective strategy is communication.
C. These conflicts are caused by misunderstandings.
D. With so much going on it’s no surprise conflicts often arise.

My middle child, Jake, was smart and good-looking, but he always sees the cup of life as half empty. Every day when he came home from school, Jake would list everything bad that happened that day.
On his ninth birthday, we saved enough money to take the family to Disneyland for two days. His dad and I didn’t make much then, so it cost a considerable amount, but we felt Jake’s birthday was worth it. After doing Disneyland to death, we returned to our hotel room, all exhausted. And I asked the birthday boy, “Did you have fun today, Jake?”
All my fault-finding son could say to me was, “Pirates(海盗)of the Caribbean was closed!”
“Jake Marshall,” I was clearly unable to contain my anger, “we stood in line for an hour and a half to see The Haunted Mansion. We rode Space Mountain three times. We spent two days playing in the park, and all you can say is, Pirates of the Caribbean was closed?”
Clearly, something had to be done about his negative attitude and I was going to be the one to do it! I was determined to help him. I read every article and bought every book. With the help of great resources, I found my son had the tendency to see the worst in every situation. My research told me that people with negativity have an emotional need for order and sensitivity. That meant I needed to listen to my son’s daily pessimistic reports. My usual reaction was to try to talk Jake out of his negativity, but that wouldn’t satisfy his need for sensitivity, so I had to let him finish his complaints and ask what good things happened. Then I needed to wait until he could tell me. This would help Jake realize that good things really were happening to him. One day Jake came home from school and complained as usual. He listed the terrible things at school, ranging from unsatisfactory meals to tough subjects. His face clouded with depression.
Instead of letting off steam. I listened carefully, looking at him and nodding now and then.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Instead of letting off steam, I listened carefully, looking at him and nodding now and then. When he finally paused, I gently asked, “Was there anything good today?” He frowned, thinking hard. After a long silence, he murmured, “Well… Sam shared his cookies with me.” A small smile flickered across his face. Encouraged, I said, “That’s nice! Anything else?” He hesitated, then added, “And… I got the math problem right in class.” From that day on, Jake still complained — but always ended with something good. Slowly, the cup began to look half full.

As Jack grew older, his passion for TCM became stronger. After finishing high school, he decided to travel to China to learn Traditional Chinese Medicine. He attended a well-known TCM school in Beijing. The study there was very demanding. Every day, Jack attended lectures on Chinese medical theory and practiced acupuncture and herbal medicine under the guidance of experienced teachers. Although the studies were difficult and sometimes confusing because of many differences, Jack worked hard and never gave up.
In the beginning, Jack faced many challenges communicating with his teachers and classmates, as he did not know much Chinese. However, he learned important medical terms in Chinese, such as “zhong yi”(Chinese medicine),”zhen jiu” (acupuncture), and “cao yao” (herbs). With continuous effort, he gradually improved his language skills and better understood the lessons.
After years of careful study and practice, Jack became skilled in many aspects of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He learned how to diagnose (诊断) illnesses by observing patients’ pulse and tongue and how to treat various conditions using acupuncture and herbal medicine. He often took part in TCM workshops and received recognition for his knowledge.
When Jack returned to the United States he wanted to share the benefits of Traditional Chinese Medicine with his local community. He opened a small clinic where he treated patients patiently using acupuncture, herbal medicine, and other natural methods. Many people in his town began to trust and appreciate the treatments he provided.
4. What inspired Jack Anderson to study TCM?
A. A trip to China when he was young. B. A film that introduced him to TCM.
C. His parents’ recommendation of TCM. D. A book about TCM he found in a library.

S. Navy were called in for a desperate search to rescue the passengers only to discover the Titan had collapsed inward with no survivors.

A. The occurrence of drowning.
B. The criticism from the society.
C. The debate among journalists.

C Repetition with slight variations.
