Hot air ballooning is the activity of flying in a basket hanging over a hot air balloon. Attractive parts of ballooning include the unusual quiet, the lack of a feeling of movement, and the bird’s-eye view. Since the balloon moves with the direction of the winds, the passengers feel absolutely no wind, except for brief periods during the flight when the balloon climbs or falls into air currents of different directions or speeds. Hot air ballooning has been recognized by the World Aeronautical Federation (WAF) as the safest air sport, and accidents seldom happen. However, you must follow some rules such as: * You have to respect the limit of passengers allowed in the ride. A recent incident has drawn new attention to the danger of ballooning. Four years ago, 11 people were injured and 2 were killed when their hot air balloon basket struck in line and caught fire. *The pilot must check the weather and select a suitable take-off point. The current and forecast weather must have good visibility for the pilot to see, and slow winds to allow take-off and landing. * Children aged under twelve have to be with their parents all the tour. * Pilots must not carry passengers who have participated in scuba diving (蛙潜) the day before. There are many regular (定期) gatherings of balloons and balloonists in Hidalgo around the year, which provide both a place for balloonists to interact as well as a place for visitors to entertain. You must try this activity at least once in a lifetime. 1.What is an attraction of hot air ballooning? A.Hearing the sound of the wind. B.Enjoying a breathtaking view. C.Experiencing different weather. D.Having a feeling of movement. 2.What can we learn from the rules of hot air ballooning? A.13 passengers are allowed on board at most. Now, the Search for Lost Birds, a global organization, is taking action. It offers people a database (数据库) and encourages them to share information on the lost birds they might find in the wild. Long-billed Bush Warbler Lost: 1977| Found: 2022 This songbird once existed in such large numbers in the river valleys of Kashmir that some said it could be heard all day long — until changing agricultural practices threatened its habitats. Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon Lost: 1896| Found: 2022 For 126 years, this pheasant-like bird was considered all but lost on its homeland of Fergusson Island, a mountainous land off Papua New Guinea. Dusky Tetraka Lost: 1999| Found: 2022/2023 In late 2022, researchers returned to the same location in the rainforest of Madagascar, where the dusky tetraka had last been seen in 1999. It teaches the basics of grammar and pronunciation, before moving on to simple conversations. It slowly increases in difficulty, with spaced repetition (间隔重复) to help you learn. Unfortunately, the free trial is limited to just a single lesson for each language. Some lessons can feel dry and repetitive. There’s no real gamification (游戏化) here, so it doesn’t have the addictive attraction of some other apps. Babbel is $15 per month, $38 for 3 months, $67 for 6 months, $89 annually. Duolingo Designing gamification into your language practice is a clever way to keep you interested, and no other app does this better than Duolingo. It’s easy and fun to use, and you will soon find yourself eagerly keeping your daily streak (每日打卡). However, Duolingo is light on speaking and listening. The free Duolingo offers a lot of great content, but you do have to put up with ads. Duolingo is free. Super Duolingo is $13 per month or $84 annually, with a Family Plan at $120 annually. Memrise Memrise is a useful tool to learn basic vocabulary and simple conversations. It uses a familiar flashcard method to help you remember words and phrases. There are also grammar lessons and exercises. You can set goals, and lessons are quick. On the downside, the exercises can get repetitive. Additionally, there isn’t much explanation, and advanced learners should look elsewhere. Memrise is free. Memrise Pro is $15 per month, $90 annually. 1.What is a weakness of Babbel? S. National Park Service (NPS) started keeping records in 1904, its mountain landscapes, seaside wildernesses, and high desert acres have registered more than 16 billion visits. Some of the best-known parks experienced record crowds in 2023. These 4 parks are the superstars of the system, but they offer just a glimpse of the variety to be found. Yosemite National Park “No park made with human hands can compete with Yosemite,” wrote John Muir, whose efforts led to the creation of California’s Yosemite National Park in 1890. Nearly 4 million visitors came to this steep cliffs and towering waterfalls in 2023. Most spent time in Yosemite Valley, a mile-wide, seven-mile-long canyon that was cut by a river. Yellowstone National Park A stop at the Center of the West on your way will enhance your visit to the nation’s very first national park — Yellowstone National Park. It was visited by 4.5 million people in 2023. The vast reserve covering 2.2 million acre has rocky peaks, explosive geysers, alpine lakes, deep forests, and a wealth of wild animals. Acadia National Park Sea and mountains meet at Acadia National Park in Maine, which saw 3,879,890 people visit in 2023. Most of the park is on Mount Desert Island, a combination of parkland, private property, and waterside villages. Have you ever imagined how it feels when fresh air is in your face? Or to see the beauty of nature from the top? You can do it in a hot air balloon ride. B.It allows take-off or landing in strong winds. C.A person aged 12 and older can ride alone. D.Any scuba divers are allowed as passengers. 3.What kind of text is it? A.A news report. B.A scientific research. C.A travel guide. Long-billed Bush Warbler Lost: 1977| Found: 2022 This songbird once existed in such large numbers in the river valleys of Kashmir that some said it could be heard all day long — until changing agricultural practices threatened its habitats. After 45 years of secret, in 2022, the birdwatcher James Eaton found a warbler in a potato field. Black-naped Pheasant-pigeon Lost: 1896| Found: 2022 For 126 years, this pheasant-like bird was considered all but lost on its homeland of Fergusson Island, a mountainous land off Papua New Guinea. Recently, an international team of scientists, guided by local hunters, finally took a photo of the pigeon. Dusky Tetraka Lost: 1999| Found: 2022/2023 In late 2022, researchers returned to the same location in the rainforest of Madagascar, where the dusky tetraka had last been seen in 1999. Urich’s Tyrannulet Lost: 2005| Found: 2021 This flycatcher, observed only three times since its discovery in Venezuela in 1899, seemed to disappear completely after 2005. A.It offers no free trial. B.It is highly addictive. C.It shows too many ads. D.It is boring sometimes. 2.Compared with the other two apps, what is special about Duolingo? A.It’s for free. B.It’s like a game. C.It’s easy to use. D.It teaches grammar. 3.How much do you need to pay for a membership of three months for Memrise Pro? A.$15. B.$38. C.$45. D.$90. 【答案】1.D 2.B 3.C 【导语】这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了三款语言学习应用程序:Babbel、Duolingo和Memrise。 1.细节理解题。根据第一段“Some lessons can feel dry and repetitive. (通过这首诗,Rita Dove讨论了她小时候最重要的生活影响的美好回忆。)”和第四首诗歌介绍中的第二句“In this poem, Tupac Shakur compares himself to a neglected rose who went from being a marginalized teenager to one of the most influential singers the world has ever known. (在这首诗中,Tupac Shakur将自己比作一朵被忽视的玫瑰,从一个被边缘化的青少年变成了世界上最有影响力的歌手之一。)”可知,最后的这两首诗歌都是基于诗人自己的生活写的。故选B项。 Passage 3 (23-24高一上·浙江宁波·期末) Do you have a story to share?
