forecast.A big storm in southern China-(21)
(mean)a big release of water from the Chinese
dams upstream()and,in turn,a good chance that.his village will be flooded. The Chinese
government is supposed(22)(warn)downstream countries,(23)
in Boontom's
experience, that warning tends to arrive too late or not at all.
Boontom is the leader of Ban Pak Ing,a village on the west bank of the Mekong().Twenty
years ago, like many of his neighbors,Boontom caught fish for a living. But as China completed one, then
two,and then seven dams upstream, the few hundred residents of Ban Pak Ing saw the Mekong change.
The sudden rise and fall in water levels interfere with fish migration and spawning(洄游和产卵).
(24).the village has protected local spawning grounds, there are no longer enough fish to go around.
In recent years Boontom and many others here (25)

One principle of taxation,.called the benefit principle(受益原则),states that people should pay taxes
based on the benefits they receive from government services. This principle tries to make public goods
similar to31goods.It seems reasonable that a person who often goes to the movies pays more
in 32
for movie tickets than a person who rarely goes. And 33-a person who gets great

benefit from a public good should pay more for it than a person who gets little benefit.
The gasoline tax,for instance,is sometimes34 under the benefits principle. In some states,
revenues (from the gasoline tax are used to build and35 roads.Because those who buy
gasoline are the same people who use the roads, the gasoline tax might be viewed as a 36.way to
pay this government service.
The benefits principle can also be used to37that wealthy citizens should pay higher taxes
than poorer ones, simply because the wealthy benefit more from public services.Consider, for example,
the benefits of police protection from theft.Citizens with much to protect get greater benefit from the
police than those with less to protect. Therefore, according to the benefits principle, the wealthy should
38more than the poor to the cost of maintaining the police39.The same argument can
be used for many other public services, such as fire protection, national 40,and the court system.

depends on their age, life circumstances, and personal motivations.A recent poll on our website asked the
same question.
The (42)
reason for staying on the job was the nature of work and job satisfaction.

corporate culture, followed by advancement opportunity and personal growth.Salary and benefits were
the least important.

usually make it into the top three reasons for job satisfaction on such surveys. Most people know they
could earn more money elsewhere, but it's not enough to get them to (44)
a job they like.
Advancement doesn't rank at the top of the list, either. That's probably because so many people think
that moving up can make life on the job more(45)
The only thing one gets (46)
is more money.
So what (47)
job satisfaction? One typical answer is"I like to be challenged".People

At first glance Esther Okade seems like a normal 10-year-old.She loves dressing up as Elsa from
"Frozen",playing with Barbie dolls and going to the park or shopping. But what makes the
British-Nigerian youngster stand out is the fact that she's also a university student.
Esther, from Walsall,an industrial town in the UK's West Midlands region,is one of the country's

youngest college freshmen. The talented 10-year-old enrolled at the Open University in January and is
already top of the class, having recently scored 100%in an exam.
"It's so interesting and super easy,"she laughs."My mum taught me in a nice way."She adds,"I want
to finish the course in two years. Then I'm going to do my PhD in financial maths when I'm 13.I want to
have my own bank by the time I'm 15 because I like numbers and I like people and banking is a great way
to help people."
And in case people think her parents have pushed her into starting university early,Esther disagrees.
"I actually wanted to start when I was seven. But my mum didn't agree."After three years of begging,
Mother Efe finally agreed to explore the idea.
Esther has always jumped ahead of her peers. Her mother noticed her daughter's gift for figures
shortly after she began homeschooling her at the age of three.Initially,Esther's parents had enrolled her in
a private school but after a few short weeks, the usually-energetic youngster refused to go back to that
school because the teachers didn't let her talk in class. In the UK,education is not compulsory until five,
so Efe stared to do little things at home by teaching basic number skills but Esther was smiles ahead.By
four, her natural talent for maths had seen the eager student move on to algebra (and quadratic
equations(二次方程式).
And Esther isn't the only maths miracle in the family. Her younger brother Isaiah,6,will soon be
sitting his first A-level exam in June.

For years, the Empire State Building in New York was recognized as the tallest building in the world,
but in recent decades, many much higher structures have been built.Read on to learn more about four of
the tallest skyscrapers existing today.
●Buri Khalifa
Buri Khalifa in Dubai,United Arab Emirates,is currently the tallest building in the world. The tower
is part of a new development built on a man-made lake.Burj Khalifa has a distinctive shape so that the
windows look out onto the Persian Gulf.A 304-room hotel occupies the lower floors and there is an
observation deck on the 124th floor. The top floor is home to a private VIP club, closed to anyone except
members.
Shanghai World Financial Centre
This skyscraper has the highest observation deck in the world, although the building itself is no
longer the tallest.Construction stopped between 1998 and 2003 because of the Asian financial crisis, but it
was eventually finished in 2008.The most distinctive feature in its design is the geometric opening at the
top of the tower.
International Commerce Centre
This skyscraper in Hong Kong stands on top of Kowloon Station, which gave its name to the original
proposal for the building. The tower is not as high as in earlier plans because of regulations that prevented
buildings from being taller than the surrounding mountains.A five-star hotel occupies the upper fifteen
floors of the building. There is an observation deck on the 100th floor and a number of five-star restaurants
on the 1015t floor.
●Petronas Towers
These towers in Kuala Lumpur,Malaysia, are the tallest twin buildings in the world. They were built
on the site of the city's horse-racing tracking and an exclusive shopping centre is located at the base. The
towers are connected by a sky bridge on the 41st and 42nd floors, which is the highest two-storey bridge in
the world. It is open to the public, but only a limited number of free tickets are given out each day,and
visitors are allowed no more than ten minutes on the bridge.

Given the buzz it's created, there's a good chance you've heard about ChatGPT.It's an interactive
chatbot powered by machine learning. The technology has basically devoured()the entire Internet,
reading the collective works of humanity and learning patterns in language that it can recreate. All you
have to do is give it a prompt ()and ChatGPT can do an endless array of things:write a story in a
particular style,answer a question,explain a concept,compose an email,write a college essay--and it will
spit out coherent, seemingly human-written text in seconds. The technology is both awesome and
terrifying.
22-year-old Edward Tian is working on a new app to fight against the misuse of ChatGPT.
Over the last couple years,Tian has been studying an AI system called GPT-3,a previous version of
ChatGPT that was less user-friendly and largely inaccessible to the general public because it required
payment for public use.As part of his studies this fall semester,Tian researched how to detect text written
by the AI system while working at Princeton's Natural Language Processing Lab.
Then,as the semester was coming to a close,OpenAI,the company behind GPT-3 and other AI tools,
released ChatGPT to the public for free. For the millions of people around the world who have used it
since, interacting with the technology has been like getting a peek into the future;a future that not too long
ago would have seemed like science fiction.
For many users of the new technology, excitement quickly turned to alarm. How many jobs will this
kill? Will this empower nefarious(恶意的)evil actors and further damage our publie diseourse(公共话
)How will this disrupt our education system? What is the point of learning to write essays at school
when AI--which is expected to get far better in the near future--can do that for us?
Tian had an idea. What if he applied what he had learned at school over the last couple years to help
the public identify whether something has been written by a machine?

Tian already had the know-how and even the software on his laptop to create such a program.
Ironically(讽刺的是),this software,called GitHub Co-Pilot,.is powered by GPT-3.With its assistance,
Tian was able to create a new app within three days. It's the proof of the power of this technology to make
us more productive.
On January 2nd,Tian released his app GPTZero. It basically uses ChatGPT against itself, checking
whether"there's zero involvement or a lot of involvement"of the AI system in creating a given text.
When Tian went to bed that night,he didn't expect much for his app. When he woke up,his phone
had blown up.He saw countless texts and DMs from journalists, principals, teachers, you name it,from
places as far away as France and Switzerland. His app, which is hosted by a free platform.became so
popular that it crashed.Excited by the popularity and purpose of his app,the hosting platform has since
granted Tian the resources needed to scale the app's services to a mass audience.
63.Which of the following statements is TRUE about GPT-3?
A.It's designed and researched by Edward Tian in Princeton University
B.It is in the same AI system series as ChatGPT and GPTZero.
C.Not many ordinary people have used it because it is not free.
D.It used to be less user-friendly than ChatGPT but has outdone it now.
64.Excitement at ChatGPT quickly turned to alarm because many users have the following concerns
over ChatGPT EXCEPT
A.AI may replace human beings in the future when it comes to writing essays.
B.Actors may turn bad or even evil if the new technology is adopted in acting.
C.The education system may be badly impacted by the misuse of the new technology.
D.Many people may be out of employment because of the new technology.
65.Principals and teachers may get interested in Edward Tian's new app probably because
A.the app is hosted by a free platform which is very popular.
B.they know many journalists are also very interested in it.
C.they are eager to share the resources Edward Tian is granted.
D.they are worried about the possibility of students cheating in writing
66.Which of the following expressions can best describe the principle behind GPTZero?
A.Harm set,harm get.
B.Birds of a feather flock together.
C.Fight a man with his own weapon.

67
They are church weddings with a great deal of music, weddings on
mountaintops with guests who are without shoes and so on.But many weddings,no matter where or how
they are performed include certain traditional customs.
Before a couple is married, they become engaged. And then invitations are sent to those who live
near by,their close friends and their relatives who live faraway.68The wedding itself
usually lasts between 20 and 40 minutes. The wedding ceremony enters the church while the wedding
march is played. The bride carrying a bouquet enters last with her father who will give her away. The
groom enters the church from a side door. When the wedding party is gathered by the altar(),the
bride and groom exchange vows.It is traditional to use the words:
"To have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for poorer,in sickness and
in health,to love and to cherish, till death do us part."69 Wearing the wedding ring on
the fourth finger of the left hand is an old custom.
After the ceremony there is often a party, called a "reception"which gives the wedding guests an
opportunity to congratulate the newlyweds.
The car in which the couple leaves the church is decorated with balloons streamers and shaving
cream. The words "Just Married"are painted on the trunk or back window..70
When
the couple drives away from the church, friends often chase them in cars honking and drawing attention to
them. And then the couple go on their honey moon.
