Riding across the wide Mongolian steppe is never easy. A single mistake — losing equipment or a horse stepping into a hidden hole — can mean game over. Yet earlier this month, 45 riders faced this challenge in the Mongol Derby, known as the world’s toughest horse race.
The course covers 1,000 kilometers of open plains, mountains, rivers, and sand. Riders spend up to ten days crossing the land, changing horses every 20 miles at supply stations. These Mongol horses are known to be the toughest in the world, handling -40℃ winters to 30℃ summers. Small but powerful, they have changed very little over hundreds of years and are known for carrying warriors into battle during the Mongol Empire’s conquests in the 13th century.
But riding these horses is extremely demanding. “Competitors endure 12-hour days at high speed. It’s significantly harder than anything I’ve ever done,” said Anna Boden. The 30-year-old teacher from London was one of the four winners of the Mongol Derby, crossing the finish line alongside Eisa Al Khayari and Khalifa Al Hamed from the UAE, and Michael Pollard from the USA.
The physical challenge is matched by the mental strain. “The toughest part is staying positive through highs and lows,” Michael said. “You’re constantly facing failure, but pushing through makes you even stronger.”
Riders stay in gers — traditional Mongolian tents — with local herding families, whose kindness offers comfort and motivation. Horses are sacred in Mongolia, and riders must respect them — even when thrown off. “Respect for the horses is vital here,” Michael noted.
The race traces back to Genghis Khan’s 13th-century postal system, linking distant lands by horse relay. Today, it honors that legacy. Rather unusually for a horse race, the Mongol Derby allows joint winners, which is how four riders crossed the finish line at the same time this year. Michael said: “We’d rather cross together than see anyone lose. It is really beautiful and I’m really honored to have been part of it.”
4. What makes the Mongol Derby especially challenging?
A. Riders have to cross 1,000 km of rough land.
B. Riders might easily lose their way in the wild.
C. Riders need to set up their own tents at night.
D. Riders might run into wild animals along the route.
5. What does Michael think is the hardest thing about the race?
A. Enduring extreme physical pain. B. Communicating with local families.
C. Staying optimistic through tough times. D. Changing horses at supply stations every 20 miles.
6. Why must riders show respect to the horses according to the text?
A. To avoid horse injuries. B. Due to their religious significance.
C. Because of their strength and power. D. To ensure faster speed during the race.
7. What does Michael Pollard’s statement in the last paragraph suggest?
A. Team spirit matters. B. Winning is everything.
C. The race is in fact unfair. D. Genghis Khan’s legacy will live on.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. A

For swimmers and surfers, sharks without teeth may sound like a relief. Yet a new study warns that this could one day become a reality, as ocean acidification threatens the sharp teeth that these top predators rely on to survive.
Sharks have several rows of teeth, and new ones usually replace lost ones quickly. But researchers found that rising ocean acidity may damage teeth faster than they can be replaced, making it harder for sharks to feed. This could affect both shark populations and the balance of the marine ecosystem.
Ocean acidification occurs when the sea absorbs large amounts of carbon dioxide, lowering pH levels. By the year 2300, the ocean’s pH may drop from today’s 8.1 to about:7.3. Such a change could bring serious challenges to many sea creatures.
To test the impact, scientists placed 60 shark teeth into tanks. One tank had normal seawater (pH 8.1) and the other was more acidic (pH 7.3). After eight weeks, teeth in the acidic water showed about twice as much damage. The teeth had come from blacktip reef sharks at a German aquarium, which were collected after the sharks naturally lost them.
According to lead researcher Maximilian Baum, acidification adds to other threats sharks already face, such as overfishing and loss of prey (猎物). Earlier research also showed that shark skin scales, which are tooth-like structures, suffer similar harm. More sensitive shark species, especially those with slower tooth replacement, may face greater risks.
Still, Baum believes sharks may adapt by replacing teeth more quickly or strengthening them. Shark tooth expert Lisa Whitenack added that even corroded teeth might still function. She stressed the need for future studies to test whether damaged teeth can still cut or puncture prey effectively.
The findings highlight the importance of reducing human-made carbon emissions. Protecting sharks’ teeth is not only about the animals themselves, but also about the health of the entire ocean ecosystem.
8. What can be inferred from the study’s findings?
A. Sharks will evolve larger jaws soon.
B. Artificial lighting brings sharks more food.
C. Cutting carbon emissions helps protect sharks.
D. Most sharks already adapt well to acidic waters.
9. What did the shark tooth experiment show?
A. Teeth grew stronger in acidic water.
B. Acidic water doubled tooth damage.
C. pH 7.3 water improved tooth strength.
D. Teeth in pH 8.1 water remained perfect.
10 What does Lisa Whitenack’s statement suggest?
A. Corroded teeth are useless for hunting.
B. Damaged teeth need functional testing.
C. Sharks will evolve new teeth structures.
D. Acidification only affects tooth appearance.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. Sharks’ Teeth at Risk from Acid.
B. Why Sharks lose Teeth in Old Age.
C. New Discoveries About Shark Teeth.
D. The Role of Shark Teeth in Marine Ecosystems.
【答案】8. C 9. B 10. B 11. A

A recent study has shown that different kinds of songs bring back different kinds of memories. Softer, acoustic (原声的) music tends to remind people of calm or even sad moments, while louder, high-energy songs more often bring back fun and exciting events.
“We all know the feeling of hearing a song and suddenly being taken back to a past moment,” explained Safiyah Nawaz from Goldsmiths University in London. “Our study shows that qualities of the music itself — such as how energetic, loud, or acoustic it is — are connected to the emotions and clarity of those memories.”
Scientists have long known that music can conjure strong memories. What’s new is how the emotional qualities of music are linked to memory, which could help in medical treatments, such as helping people with dementia (痴呆) or Alzheimer’s disease. Music therapies are already used with patients, often reducing anxiety and improving their relationships with caregivers.
To explore this further, researchers surveyed 233 people aged 18 to 76. Participants were asked about memories connected to both their favorite songs and popular hits from their teenage years. Previous research suggests that around age 14, people form the strongest music-related memories.
The analysis revealed several patterns. More acoustic songs were tied to vivid and unique memories, often involving emotions like romance or admiration. In contrast, high-energy songs, such as Prince’s When Doves Cry, brought back memories of excitement and amusement, and were recalled more quickly. Another key finding was that self-chosen songs led to more positive and specific memories than chart hits, showing that it’s not just the musical features that influence memory, but also how much a person likes a song and how familiar it is to them.
The team has also launched an online collection of songs and musical memories, aiming to expand it beyond Western samples. “We hope this collection will help us better understand how music, together with personal experience, produces such deep and meaningful memories,” said Nawaz, adding that future research will explore how musical elements interact with personal factors to create meaningful memories in everyday life.
12. What is the main focus of the recent study?
A. Why people prefer acoustic songs. B. How music treats dementia patients.
C. How music affects emotions directly. D. How music qualities influence memory.
13. What does the underlined word “conjure” in Paragraph 3 most likely mean?
A. Hold back. B. Search for. C. Put down. D. Bring about.
14. What is a possible benefit of music therapy?
A. Stop memory decline. B. Improve patient mood.
C. Help patients live longer. D. Slow down aging process.
15. Which kind of music recalls more pleasant memories?
A. Songs from the music charts. B. Songs that are soft and acoustic.
C. Songs frequently played on the radio. D. Songs personally preferred by listeners.
【答案】12. D 13. D 14. B 15. D

A great poem can be there for you — just like other works of art you hold dear. It can help you process sadness, anger or fear. ____16____ Some poems make you want to stand up and shout them from the roofs. But if you haven’t read poetry in a while, these feelings may be hard to access. Here are four tips to help you meaningfully connect to a poem.
____17____ In school, poetry is often taught as something to analyze — students must understand every line, find hidden meanings, and write essays. That keeps them from developing personal relationships with poetry. So relax as you read a poem — there’s no quiz at the end!
Read it out loud. ____18____ When you speak the words out, you notice rhythm, tone, and emotion. Try reading the same poem in different ways: slowly, as if savoring each word; or clearly, as if explaining it to someone else. It may help further your understanding of the poem.
Don’t worry about “getting it”. People often feel pressured to unlock a poem’s true meaning. Don’t do that. ____19____ Ask yourself some simple questions: What impression does it leave? What thoughts come to mind? These questions help you shape your experience.
Visualize the poem. A poem might offer visual imagery — or may not. If not, use your imagination to fill in the details. Think of the poem as a movie or a play and you’re the director. What colors would you use? ____20____ If there’s light, what kind of light would it be? These brain pictures can enrich your connection to the poem.
A. What kind of setting is there?
B. Take notes while studying poetry.
C. Instead, focus on your own reaction.
D. Or it makes you feel happy or excited.
E. Don’t treat poetry like a classroom task.
F. How does the poem have an impact on you?
G. Poetry has a long history as an art form.
【答案】16. D 17. E 18. G 19. C 20. A

Mira and Kael were adventurous siblings who loved exploring nature and always supported each other through every challenge. For days, they had been preparing for a weekend hike in the mountains.
It all started with a map Kael found in an old hiking magazine at the library. Tucked between pages about mountain trails was an old photo of a lake so blue it looked unreal — “Hidden Eagle Lake,” it said, “almost no one knows how to get there.” That was all he needed. “Mira, we have to go!” he said, bursting into her room.
For days, they studied printouts, packing and repacking their bags, checking lists again and again. Their parents weren’t thrilled, but finally agreed: one night, just the two of them, deep in the Pine Ridge Mountains.
On a foggy Sunday morning, backpacks heavy on their shoulders, they left the last road behind and began climbing. The trail was steeper than expected, roots snaking across the path, fog wrapping the trees like smoke. But when they finally broke through the treeline, there it was — the lake, glowing under the clearing sky, surrounded by cliffs and silence. No footprints. No signs. Just wild, untouched beauty.
They dropped their packs with a laugh, quickly set up the tent, and lit a fire. As soup warmed over the flames, they sat close, swapping stories from past trips, feeling like real explorers. For a moment, everything seemed perfect.
Then Kael saw it — a dark gap beneath some thick vines, half-hidden by the rocks. “Look! A cave!” he said, eyes wide. Mira hesitated — it looked damp... maybe dangerous. But curiosity won. “Okay,” she said, “but just a quick look.”
Big mistake.
Inside, the air turned cold. The narrow tunnel opened into a wider space, water dripping from sharp rocks above. Kael stepped forward — and the ground gave way beneath him.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Mira’s heart sank, but she forced herself to stay calm. “Kael! Can you hear me?” she called out, her voice trembling slightly. She leaned over the edge, and relief washed over her when she heard Kael’s faint reply. “I’m okay, just a little bruised.” Mira quickly rummaged through her backpack and found the climbing rope they’d packed. She tied one end securely to a sturdy rock above the cave entrance and lowered the other end down. “Hold on tight, I’ll get you out,” she said firmly.
Kael took a deep breath, grabbing the rope with one hand. Mira pulled with all her strength, her muscles straining. Step by step, Kael climbed up, and when he finally reached the top, they collapsed into each other’s arms, tears of relief streaming down their faces. That night, as they sat by the fire again, the lake still shimmering in the distance, they knew their adventure had taken a scary turn, but their bond had only grown stronger. They decided to leave the cave unexplored and cherish the beauty of Hidden Eagle Lake, vowing to always put safety first on their future adventures.

7 What does Michael Pollard’s statement in the last paragraph suggest?
A. Team spirit matters. B. Winning is everything.
C. The race is in fact unfair. D. Genghis Khan’s legacy will live on.

B Acidic water doubled tooth damage.
C. pH 7.3 water improved tooth strength.
D. Teeth in pH 8.1 water remained perfect.
10. What does Lisa Whitenack’s statement suggest?

A What kind of setting is there?
B. Take notes while studying poetry.
C. Instead, focus on your own reaction.
D. Or it makes you feel happy or excited.
E. Don’t treat poetry like a classroom task.
F. How does the poem have an impact on you?
G. Poetry has a long history as an art form.
