As 18,000 hockey fans crowded into Climate Pledge Arena for the Seattle Kraken’s first home game, Brian Hamilton, the assistant equipment manager for the visiting Vancouver Canucks, laid out the team’s hockey sticks, masks and bottled water. As he did so, he didn’t notice the woman, Nadia Popovici, who sat directly behind him. Nor did she pay much attention to him. That would change soon.
Halfway through the action, Popovici’s eyes locked onto something peculiar on the man. Through the glass, she spotted an odd-looking mole (痣) on the back of Hamilton’s neck, reddish with an irregular border. She had seen plenty like it as a hospital volunteer and soon-to-be medical student. It was a melanoma (黑素瘤).
“It’s so uncomfortable to have something on your body pointed out,” she told the Seattle Times. But she knew she had to say something. As Hamilton walked near the ice between periods, Popovici, in Kraken gear, knocked hard on the glass, typed a message on her phone and held the screen high enough: “The mole on the back of your neck looks like cancerous. Go see a doctor!”
Hamilton glanced at the brightly-lit message for only a second. That’s weird, he thought. Walking away, he uneasily rubbed the back of his neck. A few days later, he visited the Canucks’ doctor, who agreed that the mole looked alarming and ordered a biopsy It came back positive — a stage-Ⅱ malignant melanoma, life-threatening if left unattended. Hamilton had the cancerous mole removed, and the surgery was excellent.
“She took me out of a slow fire,” says Hamilton. “The words out of the doctor’s mouth were if I ignored that for four to five years, I wouldn’t be here.” The two connected at the next Canucks-Kraken game, where Hamilton was able to thank her in person. No thanks were necessary, Popovici said. “It was just one moment in our lives where we crossed paths at the right time.”
24. What made Popovici decide to tell Hamilton about the spot on his neck?
A. Medical knowledge. B. Personal relationship.
C. Overheard comments. D. Professional responsibility.
25. How did Popovici communicate her concern to Hamilton during the game?
A. By shouting aloud from a distance. B. By asking a doctor for help.
C. By showing him the message on the phone. D. By writing a note behind the glass.
26. How did Hamilton feel when saying “She took me out of a slow fire”?
A Terrified. B. Annoyed. C. Surprised. D. Grateful.
27. What message does the story convey?
A. Silence is golden. B. Prepare for a rainy day.
C. Opportunity knocks but once. D. Help is a voice, not just a feeling.
C
The human mind is astonishing. We can solve complex problems, perform calculations, create art, and process language effortlessly. We humans are the smartest of all, or so we think...
However, recent studies reveal how easily context can mislead us. Consider the Müller-Lyer illusion (错觉): equal-length lines look different if one has outward-pointing arrows and the other has inward-pointing arrows. Similarly, three identical-sized runners positioned along a visual path seem to vary in size.
Before you conclude that being fooled is reserved only for visual illusions, let me give the example of Belinda: an outspoken philosophy student, deeply concerned with sustainability, biodiversity, and global warming. Is Belinda more likely: a)a top student, or b)a top student and vegetarian? Many people choose the second, because the context of being vegetarian seems to fit the image of someone deeply concerned with sustainability. But statistically, the first is more likely. There are always more top students than vegetarian top students.
Yet for all its potential to trick, context more often serves as our mental shortcut to efficient understanding. Rather than memorizing every possible meaning of words and sentence patterns, we constantly use surrounding information to fill gaps. As linguist J. R. Firth observed, “You shall know a word by the company it keeps.” For example, in the sentence “My daughter was ferliamated when she got a pet dog,” we can guess that “ferliamated” means “excited”, even if the word doesn’t exist.
This two-sided nature of context leads us to an important discovery about how our minds work. While we can discuss anything at any time in any context, it seems more likely that we talk about the things whose meaning lies in the same context. This offers exciting possibilities for understanding both the human mind and language itself — showing how communication depends not just on our thinking, but equally on how language is built to work with context.
28. Which image matches the description of the “runners” illusion?
A. B. C. D.
29. Why do people often choose option (b) in the Belinda example?
A. Personalities affect decision-making. B. Top students often make better choices.
C. Extra details disturb their logical thinking. D. Personal experiences lead to their false judgment.
30. How do Firth’s quote and the “ferliamated” example support the author’s point?
A. They prove that words can have random meanings.
B. They explain why memorizing words isn’t a shortcut.
C. They demonstrate what dictionaries can’t really clarify.
D. They show how context contributes to word understanding.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The value of the research into context. B. The complex nature of context.
C. The topics discussed within the same context. D. The link between context and mind.
D
Scientists have dreamed for centuries about using animal organs to treat humans. In recent years, those efforts have begun to bear fruit: Researchers have begun transplanting the hearts and kidneys of genetically modified pigs into patients, with varying degrees of success. But lungs are notoriously difficult to transplant, even from human to human, and mortality rates (死亡率) are high.
Now, in the first procedure of its kind, Chinese scientists reported transplanting a lung from a pig into a brain-dead man on August 25th, 2025. The organ sustained damage after it was transplanted but functioned to some degree, scientists at Guangzhou Medical University reported in the journal Nature Medicine. The organ was removed after nine days.
American scientists called the procedure exciting but urged caution. While dialysis (透析) can help people with kidney failure, there’s not much that can replace lungs. In the US alone, millions suffer from life-threatening lung disease. Yet there is an extreme shortage of human lungs available for transplant. Many donor organs are simply not in good enough condition to transplant.
The Chinese scientists transplanted the left lung of a pig that had undergone six gene edits into a brain-dead 39-year-old man. Because the procedure left his functioning right lung in place, the experiment did not prove that the transplanted lung could sustain life on its own, critics noted. The pig’s lung also suffered damage within 24 hours of the transplant. Signs of antibody-mediated rejection were observed at three and six days after transplant. Fluid buildup was also discovered in the lung.
Since lungs come into contact with the environment with every breath and are constantly being exposed to external (外部的) threats, like allergens, pollutants and viruses, they are rich in immune cells. The immune responses in these organs are thus more aggressive than those seen in other solid organs, like the kidney, and transplanted lungs are more likely to fail.
This trial is part of a growing effort to use genetically modified (改良的) pig organs to address the critical shortage of human donors. Similar experiments involving pig kidneys and livers are underway in the U.S. and China. Earlier this year, a patient in New Hampshire received a pig kidney and remains the longest-living survivor of such a transplant. If refined, pig organ transplants could offer hope to millions of patients with end-stage lung, kidney, or liver disease.
32. What is the significance of China’s pig-to-human lung transplant?
A. First lung transplant across species attempted.
B. A record number of genetic modifications used.
C. A complete cure for end-stage lung disease provided.
D. The longest survival of a pig organ in a human achieved.
33. What was the limitation of the pig-to-human lung transplant attempt?
A. Continuous external threats. B. Limited gene edits.
C. Immediate internal rejection. D. Unproven independent function.
34. Basically, why are lung transplants more difficult than other organ types?
A. Its milder immune response. B. Its larger physical size.
C. Its more environmental danger. D. Its rarer equipment support.
35. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Pig Organs Help cure Human Lung Diseases.
B. Scientists Perform First Pig-to-Human Lung Transplant.
C. Dialysis Replaces Failing Lungs for Most Patients successfully.
D. Medical Teams managed to deal with Organ Shortage Problem.

How to Do Shadow Work
Do you ever ask yourself, “Why did I do that?” or “Why did I say that?” Chances are, if you’ve done something out of character, it’s because of your Shadow — the personality traits and thoughts you wish you didn’t have, namely, your “darker” side. So, is there anything we can do to help? Absolutely! That’s where Shadow work comes in. ___36___. Here are some tips on how to practice it.
Take a step back and look at your life objectively. ___37___. Then ask yourself, “Why did that get to me? Why did I feel that way? What triggered that behavior or emotion?” Answering these questions will help you recognize behavioral patterns and feelings.
___38___. Healing takes time, but progress won’t be made unless you’re completely honest with yourself. We know pulling back the curtain on your most undesirable traits is more than difficult, but you can do it. Know that even if the truth is hard to swallow, you’re learning from it, and it’s leading you to become the best version of yourself.
Question your reactions. Pause, reflect, and understand why you feel a certain way before you instinctively react. If you feel like you’re about to judge someone or make a rude comment, stop and question, “What triggered me to think this?” ___39___.
Acknowledge, understand, and forgive your insecurities. Since you are aware of the impacts of your “darker” side, it’s time to give yourself space to move on. Life is all about change; you’re expected to change with it, but don’t be afraid to question those changes. As you evolve (逐步发展), acknowledge the lesser parts of yourself you want to change, learn to understand why your thinking may have changed, and ___40___.
A. Be honest with yourself
B. Write your shadow a letter
C. then make peace with yourself
D. integrate them into your whole self
E. Imagine you’ re a bystander in your own life
F. This encourages positive thoughts and actions
G. It’s the act of facing and handling your darker parts

When I was 13, I climbed my first mountain — a fairly gentle 3,900-foot peak near where I live in Surrey, British Columbia. I was overweight at the time and out of breath when I reached the summit. But I loved the challenge of conquering something big. Soon I’d climbed nearly 100 peaks. My parents were happy I’d finally found a hobby.
I often go climbing with my friend Mel Olsen, whom I’d met in a Facebook group. Two years ago, on December 30, when I was 16, she and I drove to Oregon to tackle 11,240-foot Mount Hood. It’s safer to start winter climbs at night when there’s less risk of the sun melting the snowpack. That day, we started at 3 a.m., following the paths alongside the ski runs. The temperature was about -10℃, and we wore layers we could easily remove. Along the way, we met two other climbers, and four of us moved on together.
After about five hours, we reached Devil’s Kitchen, a plateau at about 10,000 feet, just before the final push to the top. By this point, the wind conditions were nasty. My exposed skin felt as though it were burning. The other climbers decided to turn back, but Mel and I went ahead. We had ice axes, helmets, and crampons (冰爪). We were prepared for the climb.
The trail we followed grew narrower and steeper. At around 9 a.m., we reached a patch of ice called an ice step. It was about three or four feet tall and sloped at a 75-degree angle. I volunteered to go first. I placed my left foot on the ice step. You gain a sense of the ice when you stick your axe and crampons into it, and it felt good.
Confident I was safe, I put my full weight on it. Suddenly, I heard a crack, and a whole piece of ice broke off the step, right under my foot. In an instant, I fell backward. I could hear Mel calling my name as I fell down, bouncing off the rock and rolling down the mountain as if I were a character in a video game. I remember thinking, This is it. You’re done.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
I stuck out my arms and legs, grabbing at anything I could.

M: If you write a book, there’s a chance that it will be chosen as a movie script. If you make music, licensing deals present the opportunity to earn more money on your songs in the future. But for visual artists, once a work is bought from the gallery, that’s the only time they’ ll get paid.
Artworks can be sold for much higher prices than what they were initially sold for. Therefore, artists are keen to enter the secondary market. Zero Art Fair, a new art fair that offers $0 artworks and a unique contract, has helped artists make that connection. It was created by artists Jennifer Dalton and William Powhida, running from July 19th to 21st in Elizaville, New York. The fair’s contract includes a five-year vesting period during which the artist can borrow back or sell the piece. If the artwork is resold, the artist receives a percentage of the sale price. Artists benefit by clearing storage space, and collectors gain access to art they might not afford otherwise.
Other artists have experimented with novel sales methods: Adam Simon created an online network for collectors to “adopt” works of art, and Seth Siegelaub worked with lawyer Robert Projansky to create an open-source legal contract.
But that’s not to say that Zero Art Fair and these other projects are trying to replace the art market. Any experiment that benefits both creators and collectors is well worth trying.

A Medical knowledge.
A. Terrified. B. Annoyed. C. Surprised. D. Grateful.
27. What message does the story convey?
A. Silence is golden. B. Prepare for a rainy day.
C. Opportunity knocks but once. D. Help is a voice, not just a feeling.
A 25. C 26. D 27. D
根据第二段中“She had seen plenty like it as a hospital volunteer and soon-to-be medical student. It was a melanoma (黑素瘤).(作为一名医院志愿者,同时也是即将入学的医学生,她见过很多这样的痣。那是一颗黑素瘤)”可知,Popovici凭借医院志愿者经历和准医学生的医学知识,判断出Hamilton脖子上的痣是黑素瘤,进而决定告知他。故选A。
根据第三段中“As Hamilton walked near the ice between periods, Popovici, in Kraken gear, knocked hard on the glass, typed a message on her phone and held the screen high enough: “The mole on the back of your neck looks like cancerous. Go see a doctor!”(比赛间隙,Hamilton走到冰面附近时,身着克拉肯队队服的Popovici用力敲了敲玻璃,在手机上打出一条信息,将屏幕举得足够高,上面写着:“你脖子后面的那颗痣看起来像恶性的,快去看医生!”)”
根据最后一段中““She took me out of a slow fire,” says Hamilton. “The words out of the doctor’s mouth were if I ignored that for four to five years, I wouldn’t be here.”(Hamilton说:“她把我从慢火煎熬中救了出来。医生说,要是我忽视它四五年,现在就不会在这儿了。”)”可知,Hamilton知道若忽视这个痣可能危及生命,而Popovici的提醒救了他,所以他说“She took me out of a slow fire”是为了体现了他的感激之情。
B 29. C 30. D 31. A
根据第二段“Similarly, three identical-sized runners positioned along a visual path seem to vary in size. (同样,三个相同尺寸的跑步者沿着视觉路径排列时,尺寸似乎不同。)”可知,图片B展示了三人因位置不同产生大小差异的错觉,符合描述。故选B。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Before you conclude that being fooled is reserved only for visual illusions, let me give the example of Belinda: an outspoken philosophy student, deeply concerned with sustainability, biodiversity, and global warming. Is Belinda more likely: a)a top student, or b)a top student and vegetarian? Many people choose the second, because the context of being vegetarian seems to fit the image of someone deeply concerned with sustainability. But statistically, the first is more likely. There are always more top students than vegetarian top students.
根据第四段“Rather than memorizing every possible meaning of words and sentence patterns, we constantly use surrounding information to fill gaps. As linguist J. R. Firth observed, “You shall know a word by the company it keeps.” For example, in the sentence “My daughter was ferliamated when she got a pet dog,” we can guess that “ferliamated” means “excited”, even if the word doesn’t exist. (我们不是记住单词和句型的每一种可能含义,而是不断使用周围的信息来填补空白。正如语言学家 J. R. 弗斯所说:“你可以通过一个词的上下文来了解它。”例如,在句子“我女儿得到一只宠物狗时ferliamated了”中,我们可以猜测“ferliamated”的意思是“兴奋的”,即使这个词不存在。)”可知,它们展示了语境如何帮助理解单词,故选D。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“This offers exciting possibilities for understanding both the human mind and language itself — showing how communication depends not just on our thinking, but equally on how language is built to work with context. (这为理解人类思维和语言本身提供了令人兴奋的可能性 —— 展示了交流不仅取决于我们的思维,还同样取决于语言如何与语境结合。)”可知,最后一段主要讲关于语境研究的价值,故选A。

根据第二段首句“Now, in the first procedure of its kind, Chinese scientists reported transplanting a lung from a pig into a brain-dead man on August 25th, 2025. (如今,在2025年8月25日,中国科学家报告了首例此类手术,将一只猪的肺移植到了一名脑死亡男子体内)”可知,中国科学家实施的是首例猪-人肺移植手术。故选A项。
根据第四段“Because the procedure left his functioning right lung in place, the experiment did not prove that the transplanted lung could sustain life on its own, critics noted. (批评家指出,由于该手术保留了他功能正常的右肺,因此该实验并未证明移植的肺可以独立维持生命)”可知,该猪-人肺移植尝试未证明移植肺具备独立维持生命的能力。故选D项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段首句“Since lungs come into contact with the environment with every breath and are constantly being exposed to external (外部的) threats, like allergens, pollutants and viruses, they are rich in immune cells. The immune responses in these organs are thus more aggressive than those seen in other solid organs, like the kidney, and transplanted lungs are more likely to fail. (由于肺在每次呼吸时都会与环境接触,不断暴露于过敏原、污染物和病毒等外部威胁中,所以肺部富含免疫细胞。因此,这些器官的免疫反应比肾脏等其他实体器官更强烈,移植的肺也更有可能衰竭)”可知,肺移植比其他器官更难是因为其接触环境频繁、免疫反应更剧烈。故选C项。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合根据第二段首句“Now, in the first procedure of its kind, Chinese scientists reported transplanting a lung from a pig into a brain-dead man on August 25th, 2025.
G 37. E 38. A 39. F 40. C

Possible Versions:
Welcoming Tablet Integration In Classroom
While many may question the potential drawbacks concerning distractions and eyesight, I firmly support introducing tablets into our classrooms.
First, tablets unlock personalized self-learning. With adaptive learning apps, students can progress at their own pace — advanced learners dive deeper while others receive tailored support, making education more inclusive and efficient. Second, they can serve as teaching assistance tools. Imagine accessing videos or interactive virtual experiments in class, turning abstract concepts into engaging experiences and transforming passive lessons into hands-on explorations.
Tablets, if used properly, are not distractions but catalysts for academic growth. Let’s foster our digital literacy with self-discipline and make technology truly to our advantage.
反对:
Questioning Tablet Integration In Classroom
While many advocate tablets adoption in classroom, I strongly oppose this trend due to following concerns.
Practically, effective tablet use demands exceptional self-discipline — a requirement most students fail to meet. With notifications popping up and social media just a click away, many students unconsciously switch to non-academic content within minutes during tablet-based learning. Scientifically, handwriting surpasses typing in learning efficiency. Neuroscience research confirms that writing notes by hand activates deeper cognitive processing, enhancing memory retention by up to 40% compared to typing. Moreover, prolonged screen exposure may add fuel to the fire of students’ shortsightedness.
Let’s prioritize proven learning methods over flashy technology. Traditional pen-and-paper remains irreplaceable for cultivating genuine academic excellence.

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
I stuck out my arms and legs, grabbing at anything I could.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I lay there with a broken leg, while Mel knelt beside me, calling for an ambulance.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I stuck out my arms and legs, grabbing at anything I could. The wind screamed in my ears, and the cold bit into my face like fire. My body rolled faster and faster until, by pure instinct, I slammed my ice axe into the snow. It struck deep, jerking my arm painfully, but it held. My fall stopped. For a moment, I just hung there, trembling, the world silent except for my heartbeat. Then I heard Mel shouting my name from above. “Hold on!” she cried. I could see her figure moving carefully down the slope toward me. Together, inch by inch, we managed to reach a narrow ledge.
I lay there with a broken leg, while Mel knelt beside me, calling for an ambulance. She pressed her down jacket around my waist to keep me warm, her hand squeezing mine. “Help’s coming,” she said, voice steady even as her hands shook. Soon the ambulance arrived. On the way to hospital, I stared at the snow, thinking of the 100 peaks I’d climbed. I’d been so proud of “conquering” them, but this fall taught me: climbing’s not about winning. It’s about respecting nature — and leaning on friends when you stumble. That lesson mattered more than any summit.
