Read para.2-4 and find out sentences describing the battles.
Para.2: Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. . .
Para.3: But even in the depths of war, few could have been prepared for the violence and horror they would experience there.
Para.4: The fiercest fighting... Boats were hit and men drowned, …faced heavy machine gunfire. By mid-morning, hundreds lay dead ... One soldier recalled how he barely made it with bombs falling all around him: “.... All the ones in between were hit. Two were killed; three were injured. That's how lucky you had to be. "
It’s like entering a slaughterhouse (屠宰场).
“一将功成万骨枯”
“You are about to embark upon the Great Crusade, toward which we have striven these many months,” Eisenhower wrote.
“The eyes of the world are upon you. The hope and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.
“Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is will trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.
“But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man-to-man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our Home Fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to Victory!
“I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory!
“Good luck! And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.”

Translate the poem into Chinese
(First published in The Times newspaper in 1914)
For the Fallen
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
我等生者日渐衰老,而他们却不再老去;
他们不再为岁月所难,亦不再为残年所累。
我们永远缅怀他们,
在每个太阳西沉之时,在每个曙光降临之际。
These heroes who bravely fought on the beaches of northern France will be remembered forever.

Sharing
Why do people hold war memorial ceremonies?
It is a means of honoring both those in the armed forces and civilians who sacrificed their lives.
It is a reminder that peace is hard-earned, and that the costs in a war were real.
