How to make a lava lamp (熔岩灯)
What you need:
• A clean bottle
• A cup of water
• Food coloring (食用色素)
• Vegetable oil
• An effervescent tablet (泡腾片)
Steps:
1. Fill the bottle about one-quarter full with water.
2. Add a few drops of your favorite food coloring.
3. Fill the rest of the bottle with oil, leaving some space at the top. Wait for the oil and water to move apart.
4. Put the tablet into the bottle.
5. Get ready…here come the bubbly blobs (泡团)! The process lasts 1-3 minutes. Want to keep it going? Just add more effervescent tablets.
How it works:
The food coloring has the same density (密度) as water, so it mixes into the water. The oil stays on the surface because it is lighter than water. When you add the tablet, it reaches the bottom and then starts to dissolve. As it dissolves slowly, it produces CO2. After that, it disappears. Because CO2 is lighter than both water and oil, bubbles rise up, carrying some colored water. When CO2 gets out of the colored water blob, the water returns to the same density as it had and goes down to the bottom. This creates the lava lamp!
21. Which is the right process of making a lava lamp?
A.
B.
C.
22. What should you do if you want the bubbly blobs to last longer?
A. Fill the bottle with more oil.
B. Add more effervescent tablets.
C. Put more food coloring into the bottle.
23. What does the underlined word “dissolve” mean?
A. To change the color of water.
B. To get to the bottom of water.
C. To break down and mix with water.
24. Why do the bubbles rise to the top?
A. Because they’re heavier than water.
B. Because CO2 is lighter than water and oil.
C. Because they carry some colored water with them.
25. On which website can you read this article?
A. www.science-fun.com B. www.yum-cooking.com C. www.cool-discovery.com
【答案】21. A 22. B 23. C 24. B 25. A

【导语】本文介绍了制作熔岩灯所需的材料、步骤以及其工作原理。
【21题详解】
推理判断题。根据“Steps: 1. Fill the bottle about one-quarter full with water. 2. Add a few drops of your favorite food coloring. 3. Fill the rest of the bottle with oil, leaving some space at the top. Wait for the oil and water to move apart. 4. Put the tablet into the bottle.” 故选A。

词句猜测题。根据“When you add the tablet, it reaches the bottom and then starts to dissolve. As it dissolves slowly, it produces CO2”可知,泡腾片会沉入杯底,开始溶解,当它缓慢溶解时就会产生二氧化碳。因此dissolve的意思是“分解,与水混合”。故选C。
【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据“Because CO2 is lighter than both water and oil, bubbles rise up, carrying some colored water.”
故选A。

What is bamboo? Is it a tall, thin tree or a kind of grass? To many people’s surprise, it is a kind of fast-growing grass! Bamboo grows naturally in Africa, Asia, America and Australia. It has a hollow stem. This makes bamboo very light and easy to carry with much space inside.
Bamboo has been used for thousands of years and in many countries. China, one of the oldest and largest producers of bamboo, has been making use of it for more than 5,000 years. In ancient times, Chinese people used it for many things, such as clothes, houses and boats. One of the world’s oldest pipes (水管) was also made from bamboo. Chinese people loved the grass so much that they wrote many poems about it. In India, bamboo was important for traditional arts and musical instruments. In Africa, people once used bamboo for buildings, food and even medicine. Today, new uses are still being discovered and developed.
As people search for a material that is good for the environment, bamboo often tops the list. It gives off about 35% more O2 than a tree of similar size. It also takes in a lot of CO2. Also, bamboo grows very fast—some can grow over a meter a day! This makes it a good renewable resource (可再生资源).
As a result, bamboo seems like a perfect choice for everything. It’s an excellent building material. It can be used to make soft and fast-drying clothes. It’s also strong enough to make beautiful chairs, beds and tables. It seems as if its uses are never-ending. As scientists study bamboo more, we can see that it will help us live in a better, greener world.

Home alone at night, you hear a loud sound. Your heart starts racing right away, and you breathe quickly. You are ready for a fight. The fact, however, is that some books fell off the broken shelf. But the reaction (反应) of your body seems as if you were in danger.
Fear is one of our strongest and most primary feelings. Being afraid of certain things protects us from possible dangers. Some fears are in our brains since birth, but we also develop new fears from our life. Most of us can ignore (忽略) the fears when it’s clear that we aren’t in any upcoming danger.
However, people with phobias (恐惧症) have a strong fear response (反应) that causes both physical and mental pain. These fears are grouped into three different kinds: agoraphobia, social phobia and specific phobias. Agoraphobia generally refers to the fear of open spaces. Social phobia is the great fear of all social events, while specific phobias are the fear of certain situations. Among them, specific phobias are the ones that trouble people the most. For example, somebody who has a great fear of heights may even try their best not to walk on a bridge.
What’s behind the phobias? Let me show you. A friend of mine developed the fear of dogs after being hurt. One of my classmates dares not to swim because he once fell into a river. So you see, as soon as the brain thinks something is scary, it turns on the fight or flight response — preparing the body for action or leaving to make sure we stay alive. Remember that it’s normal to feel scared sometimes, but if you feel this way too often and get sick, you should see a doctor.

Many Chinese students know the name “Li Hua”. They pretend (假装) to be this made-up character when they write letters in English tests. The letters “Li Hua” writes now are different from those 20 years ago, showing how English education in China has changed over time.
In the past, learning English was quite different. Tian Lijun, who started learning in the 1990s, shared her memory. “Our textbooks were in black and white,” she said, “We spent most of the time copying words and grammar rules. We learned how to read, but we hardly practiced speaking. It was like eating a meal with no taste.” Now, things have changed completely. For students like Wang Mengqi, learning English is an exciting journey. “We have colorful pictures in textbooks and the topics are life-related,” she said. “It is like having big meals every day.”
Changes are also taking place in class. Tian’s English classes used to be teacher-centered. It means the teacher talked a lot and controlled the class all the time, while the students mainly listened and took notes. But Wang’s English teacher encourages everyone to get involved in discussion, group work and role-play. What’s more, Tian’s teachers mostly depended on the blackboard and chalk in the past. Today, teachers also use computers, iPads, smart phones, PowerPoint and even AI to guide students in their learning.
Now, students help “Li Hua” write letters about China to his foreign friends. Wang believes it shows China’s growing cultural confidence (自信). “We are not just learning English to pass exams. We are also trying to ________. We students can be great storytellers,” she said.

A.
B
C.
22. What should you do if you want the bubbly blobs to last longer?
A. Fill the bottle with more oil.

①“I feel very excited! This super project will make our travel easier and bring more people here,” said Lu, a villager in Guizhou. The “super project” is the Huajiang Grand Canyon Bridge (花江峡谷大桥) in Guizhou. It opened to the public on September 28, 2025, marking another achievement in China’s bridge building.
