When Tina Farr visits the year 2 classroom at her Oxford primary school, she can feel the change in atmosphere since play was put firmly back on the curriculum (课程). “The children come running up with things they have made. There is always a shop on the go so they will be pricing up something or finding change,” the headteacher says.
Play-based learning — letting children move around, make up games and explore within loosely guided activities — usually stops when they attend primary school. Lessons then become desk-based, focused on reading and writing.
Farr had long championed the value of play, working hard to bring it into break time. “Teachers would recognize what we do and it doesn’t take any more planning than the standard approach.” With play-based learning in place for her year 1 and 2 children, Farr then looked at where else she could change any practices that weren’t working. “If a practice isn’t in line with healthy child development, why are we doing it?”
The school’s year 5 children — aged nine and 10 — were struggling to sit still in a tight space so she removed all the furniture. “The impact was immediate and impressive. Children now choose where and how to learn. A class once struggling with attention is now calm and engaged.” A teacher noted: “Their self-regulation has improved greatly. They settle down to work much more readily.”
Farr believes the outdated system needs urgent change. “We have neuroscience (神经科学) that shows us children learn through play.” In June the school sailed through its OFSTED inspection. “The inspector really understood our play-based learning.” Farr’s message is that her approach can be rolled out. “It’s blown my mind how engaged the children are. It’s phenomenal (了不起的),” she says.
4. Which of the following best describes “play-based learning”?
A. Children following clear instructions to complete art projects.
B. Children creating their own games and exploring personal interests.
C. Children completing academic worksheets at their desks.
D. Children memorizing facts through repetitive classroom drills.
5. Why did Farr implement play-based learning?
A. To reduce teaching preparation time. B. To improve exam performance.
C. To support child development. D. To attract media attention.
6. How did the fifth graders respond to the new classroom arrangement?
A. Became more distracted. B. Gained better concentration.
C. Grew more independent. D. Developed stronger opinions.
7. What does the final paragraph emphasize about Farr’s approach?
A. Its scientific basis. B. Its implementation costs.
C Its popularity with parents. D. Its academic achievements.
B 5. C 6. B 7. A

根据文章第二段中的“Play-based learning — letting children move around, make up games and explore within loosely guided activities(以游戏为基础的学习——让孩子们四处走动,在松散的指导下进行游戏和探索)”可知,游戏化学习,让孩子们在宽松的引导活动中自由活动、编游戏和探索。选项B中的“creating their own games”直接对应原文中的“make up games”,而“exploring personal interests”精准概括了“explore within loosely guided activities”的本质,完美抓住了自主创造和自由探索的两个核心要素。故选B。

They settle down to work much more readily.(他们的自我调节能力大大提高。
故选A。

The concept of “China chic”, or guochao, has become popular in recent years. According to relevant data, the search volume for the keyword “Guochao” increased by 392.66% year-on-year from January to July 2022. The Baidu 2021 Guochao Pride Search Big Data Report revealed that interest in guochao has skyrocketed over the past 10 years. Domestic products are now in fashion, and domestic consumption has increasingly become an important choice for the new generation of consumers.
China chic integrates unique cultural elements with the latest trends across various industries. It not only meets younger consumers’ desire for personality and fashion but also helps revive traditional culture. The rise of China chic is a result of China’s rapid economic development and is driven by certain cultural motivations. Additionally, the continuous improvement of Chinese people’s consumption power is an important factor behind the rise of China chic.

Even so, we still have a long way to go in promoting China chic. But as it has become a part of people’s lives, there is no doubt that even more diverse China chic products will emerge in the future to showcase Chinese charm.

A. The expansion of China’s economy.
B. The growth in people’s purchasing power.
C. A renewed sense of cultural identity.
D. The influence of social media on the youth.
11. What does the author imply about the future of China chic?
A. It will soon lead global fashion.
B. It will need more policy support.
C. It will remain a small market.
D. It will continue to develop and diversify.

Prehistoric people may have used firelight to create the illusion (错觉) of movement in their art. An analysis of 50 carved stones dug up in France suggests that when the stones were placed near a fire, the light made the carved animals appear to move, researchers reported on April 20 in PLOS ONE. These stones, or “plaquettes”, were discovered in the 1860s in a rock shelter called Montastruc and were carved with images of animals such as horses and deer. The site was used by Magdalenian people, hunter-gatherers who inhabited the area between 23,000 and 14,000 years ago.
The researchers analyzed heat damage on the stones, which indicated that they had been exposed directly to high temperatures for prolonged periods, and created 3D models of the stones. These models were imported into virtual reality software and placed next to a virtual hearth (壁炉炉床) so that the heat-damaged areas were closest to the flames, simulating how the stones might have been arranged in real life. The researchers then observed the visual effects under the virtual firelight.
“It was surprising to see how dynamic the art was and how much your experience of the art changed with something as simple as placing it near a fire,” says Andy Needham, an archaeologist at the University of York in England. He suggests that the artists intentionally carved along the contours (轮廓) of the rock to use the flickering firelight to create an impression of meaningful movement.
The finding enhances archaeologists’ understanding of the relationship between early humans’ artwork and fire. Another recent study found that Stone Age humans created “hidden” art in dark caves that could only be illuminated and viewed with appropriate lighting.
12. What is known about the carved stones from the text?
A. They were found in Spain in the 1860s.
B. They were carved with animals in motion.
C. They were made by Magdalenian people about 14,000 years ago.
D. They showed animals like horses and deer.
13. Why did the researchers create 3D models and place them near a virtual hearth?
A. To measure the exact temperature of the flames.
B. To imitate how the stones might have been used with fire.
C. To repair the heat-damaged areas on the stones.
D. To identify the types of animals carved on the stones.
14. What does Andy Needham suggest about the ancient artists?
A. They preferred to work in dark caves.
B. They avoided carving near the edges of the stones.
C. They had a deep understanding of visual effects.
D. They might have relied on firelight while carving the stones.
15. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Hidden Art in Dark Caves
B. How Ancient People Made Tools from Stones
C. A New Study on Hunter-Gatherer Life in France
D. The Effect of Firelight on Ancient Art Perception
D 13. B 14. C 15. D

根据第三段中“He suggests that the artists intentionally carved along the contours of the rock to use the flickering firelight to create an impression of meaningful movement. (他提出,艺术家们可能是有意沿着岩石的轮廓进行雕刻,以便利用摇曳的火光创造出富有意义的动态印象)”可知,这种有意地利用光影效果来达到有意义的运动的艺术表现,表明他们对视觉效果有深入的理解。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其根据第一段中“Prehistoric people may have used firelight to create the illusion of movement in their art. (史前人类可能曾利用火光在他们的艺术作品中制造出运动的错觉)”可知,文章开篇就提出史前人类利用火光,随后第二、三段详细描述了研究人员如何通过模拟火光来验证这一假设,并引用考古学家的观点支持火光在艺术感知中的作用。最后一段也提到火光与早期人类艺术的关系。因此,文章的核心内容是探讨火光对古代艺术感知的影响。故选D。

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Fighting the Rise of Short-Sightedness in Students
A recent school survey shows that short-sightedness is increasing rapidly among students, affecting many of us.
While the main cause remains unclear, how we use our eyes matters greatly. Staring at screens — computers, phones, or TVs — strains our eyes. Reading in dim light and spending too much time indoors also harm our vision.
To fight this, we should take regular breaks and spend more time outdoors in the sunlight. We should also keep a proper distance from screens and always ensure we read with good light. These simple steps can greatly improve our eye health.
Fighting the Rise of Short-Sightedness in Students
A recent survey in our school has revealed that short-sightedness, which has already affected a large number of us, is on the rise.
What causes short-sightedness is not fully understood, but how we actually use our eyes seems to play a decisive role. For example, activities like focusing on a screen, whether it is a computer, television or smartphone, are tough on our eyes. Reading in poor light can also harm our eyesight. Spending too much time indoors is also harmful, as our eyes need natural sunlight to stay healthy.
Luckily, the situation can be improved if we take measures to stop ourselves from becoming short-sighted in the first place. We should take regular breaks from study and go outside to give our eyes a chance to get some sunlight. We should also avoid being too close to a computer, smartphone or television screen. In addition, we should ensure proper lighting whenever we read so that our eyes do not need to work too hard. I am confident that with these measures, our eye health can be greatly improved.

It was 2002, and two months earlier, my mum, Debbie, bad moved my two older sisters and me 4000km away from our old home and my grandma Mary, 62, for a new job.
Before the move, Grams, as I called her, lived with us, and she and I shared a bedroom. She’d help me get ready for school each morning, and on weekends she’d take me shopping or to the horse races. We’re like two peas in a pod Everywhere we went, people knew Grams for her outgoing personality and I missed it desperately.
“I want to move back with Grams,” I told Mum one day. Aware of our special bond, she told me to call Grams and see what she thought. “I’d love that. Krissy!” Grams exclaimed down the phone line. So at 15, I flew back to live with her. We became properly best friends. watching old movies or dancing to music together. Grams was very stylish, often giving me fashion advice, and she also taught me how to cook.
When I attended high school, I bccame a bit wild, staying out late. But when I came home, Grams always welcomed me with open arms. “Remember, Krissy.” she told me, “No matter where life takes you, family is what matters.” It was her unconditional love that got me through my teenage years and kept me from going completely off the rails.
When she reached her early 70s. Grams began exhibiting some strange behavior. One day, I noticed she’d turned on the oven. “What are you cooking, Grams?” I called out. “I’m not cooking anything,” she responded in confusion from the living room. This forgetfulness became a pattern of dangerous behavior. One day, we even found her barefoot in the snow. Eventually, she confessed that something didn’t feel right in her mind. “It’s like I’m not here in this world with you,” she told me sadly.
I took her to the doctor and the result was heartbreaking. “Your grandma has Alzheimer’s disease,” the doctor told us, “she’ll need 24-hour care.” Helpless, we checked her into assisted living. However, it seemed that my once lively grandma was very depressed there, which grieved me a great deal.

Para1: I decided to quit my job to look after her. Hearing my decision, she hugged me tightly, tears streaming down her face. We cooked the food she liked and watched movies together like the old days. To brighten her days and stimulate her memory, I took her shopping and to the horse races on a regular basis. We also visited parks and seaside, immersing ourselves in the natural beauty. Gradually, her spark slowly came back. Seeing her bright smile, I was seized by a sense of relief, feeling like I had done the right thing. With my camera, these invaluable daily moments were captured.
Para2: As I shared the videos of our daily life online, unexpected support and likes poured in. People from all over the world were touched by our story and the pure joy we shared. Our daily interactions also served as an inspiration to many in similar situations. Inspired by the attention my posts received, I started an online community dedicated to supporting families caring for loved ones with Alzheimer. Through this platform, I shared tips, resources, and personal stories of hope and resilience. Sometimes Gram’s condition sadly worsened and she didn’t always know who I was. However, it was still a joy to be with Gram in the final chapter of her life and to live each moment to the max. I was grateful for the joy she brought to my life and the unexpected way she inspired me to make a difference in the lives of others.

C. Its popularity with parents. D. Its academic achievements.

Most importantly, cultural confidence is the driving force behind the rise of China chic. Five thousand years of Chinese civilization have left behind a rich cultural heritage. In many ways, guochao is the perfect representative of the new wave of Chinese cultural pride. Originating in the fashion industry, this trend reflects Chinese consumers’ renewed interest in their cultural heritage.
C A New Study on Hunter-Gatherer Life in France
D. The Effect of Firelight on Ancient Art Perception
