It was half past seven on Monday morning: time to get ready for school. Jay Stone rolled out of bed. He did a couple of quick wake-up exercises and then he went over to his mirror and looked at himself.
“Not bad, Stone, not bad.” he said to himself and smiled. Maybe he wasn’t ready for Hollywood, but with his dark brown eyes and his thick brown hair, he had the looks that turned girls’ heads. He moved closer to the mirror and smiled, checking his teeth.
“Perfect.” he thought. “Good enough for a toothpaste ad.”
As his eyes moved down to his strong arms, he smiled again. The hours he spent in the gym and doing sit-ups had paid off.
But suddenly, the smile froze. His eyes moved from the upper part of his body down to his legs. His legs were short. Not just short, but far too short for his body. He had the upper body of a six-footer, but because of his legs he was much less than six feet! Six inches less! Sitting, he was as tall as almost anyone. Standing, he had to look up at most of the boys and even many of the girls.
Why didn’t his legs grow with the rest of his body? He was one of the shortest boys in his class. He was the shortest in his own family. He was even shorter than his “little” sister—by three inches! Where did his legs come from?
He certainly didn’t get them from his parents. They were both quite tall. Looking through old family photos, he found the answer. It was his grandfather on his mother’s side. His short legs were a gift from Grandpa Tuttle.
Thanks a lot, Grandpa!
Of course, the kids at school all noticed Jay’s short legs and they had a nickname (外号) for him: Stubs! Almost no one called him by his real name; they all called him Stubs. Stubs Stone, Jay didn’t like his nickname, but he had to accept it. He had no choice.
But Jay couldn’t see in the mirror what his legs could do. They were quick and strong. He was the youngest player on the Brewer High football team. He could run faster than anyone else in the team and, like a rabbit, he kept going and going. Even at basketball, where the other players were much taller than him, they were still afraid of him because of his speed.
Jay shook his head. “Stubs, Stubs Stone, the kid with stubby legs. Yeah, that’s me.” He said to himself with a little smile. Suddenly, he heard his mother’s voice.
“Jay, it’s breakfast time.”
24. What did Jay do after he got up on the Monday morning?
A. He did some housework. B. He took some family photos.
C. He watched TV for some time. D. He did some wake-up exercises.
25. Which of the following best describes Jay?
A. Strict and serious. B. Clever and helpful.
C. Funny and confident. D. Patient and hard-working.
26. What does the writer mainly want to tell in the passage?
A. Teenagers like to play tricks on each other.
B. Teenagers should have dreams in their hearts.
C. People’s legs usually grow with other body parts.
D. People can see their weak points in a positive way.
C
Think about how much time you spent outside last week, really “outside”. Walking from the car into the shop doesn’t count. Now think about how much time you spent indoors—on the Internet, playing video games or watching TV.
You may say, “I play inside more than outside and I like to play games on the computer.” If so, you spent more time inside walls than outside in fresh air.
Kids today spend two fewer hours per week on sports and outdoor activities than kids did 20 years ago. That’s according to a study from the University of Michigan. Non-moving activities are more popular now. Besides, the costs are overweight, greater stress, less joy and so on.
Play is important, even for adults. Just getting outdoors to play will bring you surprising results. Here are three reasons.
Outdoor activities better your senses (感觉官能).
Next time you sit down to message your friends, take notes of your senses during and after your texting. Then you do the same experiment after you’ve done something outside. You will find being outdoors brings the senses to life. “Hiking, exploring and fishing help hone all of your senses.” Says Betsy Keller. She does research on exercise and sports sciences. “Smell, hearing...all of your senses are in use when you’re outside.”
_______________________________________________
Are you stressed out? Too much indoor time—away from the natural world—is a reason of being much too nervous. Nervousness is a price we pay for being so far away from nature. However, playing outdoors does good to both body and mind.
Spending time outdoors brings you closer to the environment.
When you’re out, breathe in fresh air and search for cool birds and plants in the woods. It can help you feel more connected (相连的) to the natural world. No woods nearby? Nature can be found right outside your door or in a nearby park.
Therefore, next time you sit down to spend time on a video game, think about going outdoors to play
27. How does the writer first introduce the topic?
A. By showing readers the results of a study.
B. By introducing different kinds of outdoor play.
C. By asking readers to think about their own time spending.
D. By telling readers playing outdoors is good for body and mind.
28. Which word is the closest to the meaning of “hone” in Paragraph 5?
A. stop B. change C. show D. improve
29. Which of the following would be the best heading for Paragraph 6?
A. Playing outdoors frees you from worries. B. Nature can take away all your bad feelings.
C. Nature is the best place for your body health. D. Playing outdoors helps build better relationships.
D
It is natural to compare ourselves with others and to end up in a mental comparison circle. However, this is never good. You may have heard the words, “Comparison is the thief of joy.” To me, this is true. I find it is quite difficult to compare myself with others and feel joy at the same time.
Comparison not only takes away our joy, but also leads to self-criticism (自我批评) and a lack (缺乏) of self-acceptance. Usually, comparison makes us think that others are better than us in some way. As a result, we may feel bad. “I am not as successful or attractive as they are. Why don’t I have what they have?” We use comparison as a way to self-criticism, “What’s wrong with me? I must be a loser.” This slows down self-acceptance.
Comparison is deceptive (误导人的). It seems to tell us that if we meet the expectations such as losing weight or getting a great score, we will feel better, confident and stop comparing ourselves. However, this may be true only for a short time. In fact, a comparison is based on our inner thoughts, not surroundings (周围环境). Soon we will find something else to compare, another expectation we are not meeting, leaving us feeling worse once again. A student might celebrate being chosen for the school play, but then compare the importance of their role to that of the lead actor, resulting in bad feelings and getting stuck into another circle of comparison.
To stop comparing ourselves with others, we should know that comparison is a losing game and then step away from it. Comparison should not be the reason we decide to change. Instead, we try to change because of our own values. Think about your values and match your behaviors and decisions with your values. This does not mean we ignore things that we may want to change. It means these changes and goals are based on values, not comparison with others.
Behaviors and decisions are a matter of personal choice, not a way to keep up with others. Self-acceptance isn’t about fixing anything about yourself, it is about accepting who you are today.
30. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The results of comparison. B. The joy of comparison.
C. The importance of comparison. D. The reasons for comparison.
31. In Paragraph 3 the writer suggests that comparison is deceptive because ________.
A. it is always based on our surroundings B. it can only offer us short-term happiness
C. it always comes from false information D. it stops us from making personal choices
32. The writer probably agrees that ________.
A. we can improve ourselves by setting up higher goals
B. we can turn a deaf ear to things we need to change
C. we should focus on our own values and self-acceptance
D. we will stop comparison as soon as we achieve our goals

A Southern California student named Madison Atkinson is regarded as her family’s hero. Madison, a 15-year-old girl, used CPR skills that she learned at school to help save her 3-year-old relative during a holiday gathering.
It happened on Thanksgiving as family members were preparing dinner. Relatives at the Northridge home thought 3-year-old Maxine was inside playing with other kids. But surveillance (监控) video shows the little girl wandering into the backyard and leaning over the side of the pool and then jumping or falling in.
No one else was outside at the time, but a few minutes later Maxine’s uncle walked out to the yard and found her face down in the pool. He jumped in, pulled the little girl from the water and yelled for help. Several adults came outside but were only able to watch helplessly when efforts were made to revive (苏醒) the girl.
When Madison saw what was happening she knew exactly what to do. “I saw that he was trying the Heimlich (海姆利克氏操作法),” she recalled. “But I knew in that case we needed CPR because Maxine didn’t seem like she was breathing. I told everyone I knew CPR and it calmed everyone down.”
“Then they just laid her down on the ground and I started CPR.”
The little girl soon revived and her family says she has since recovered.
Damian Gilbert says he is very proud of his stepdaughter. She was the only one in the house with CPR training and he finds it remarkable that she was able to take control and save a life. “I’m literally watching a 15-year-old girl basically bring back our niece, a 3-year-old, to life,” Gilbert said. “It was something that I’ll remember for the rest of my life.”
