Have you ever wondered why your parents make you eat your vegetables? Do you remember how terrible they tasted, but your parents seemed to enjoy them? Do you think your parents loved vegetables when they were children? Well, they probably didn’t! So, what happened?
The truth is that our taste buds (味蕾) can change over time. As we grow older, taste buds start disappearing. That can make some tastes feel weaker, but it might also help us like new foods.
Did you know that an adult (成年人) usually has between 2,000 and 10,000 taste buds? The more you have, the more tastes you can enjoy. Young children with growing taste buds may have a stronger sense of taste than adults. That explains why some children might not like broccoli (西兰花) now but could love it when they grow up.
Of course, how food tastes isn’t just about taste buds—the smell matters a lot, too. If food smells strong, it might turn children away, even if they don’t mind the taste. The good news is that you can learn to like new foods. Sometimes, adding something you love, like cheese, can make a big difference.
Finally, you can come to dislike certain foods you once loved. If you eat too much ice-cream and then get sick, you might not want to eat it for a long time. This dislike can stick around for years!
Your taste in food can change in surprising ways. So, even if you’re not excited about those vegetables today, remember that your body will thank you later. One day, you might even enjoy them!
36. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 1 refer to ?
A. Foods. B. Friends. C. Children. D. Vegetables.
37. Why do some children hate broccoli at first but love it later?
A. Because broccoli gets tastier with time.
B. Because children want to try new foods.
C. Because children’s taste buds change as they grow.
D. Because broccoli gets new cooking ways over time.
38. How can we learn to like new foods?
A. We can try them many times. B. We can add something to them.
C. We can eat something nice first. D. We can smell something strong first.
39. What does the writer want to say in the last paragraph?
A. We should eat vegetables. B. Everyone will love vegetables.
C. Vegetables can change your taste. D. Vegetables can make you excited.
40. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. People’s tastes for food can change in different ways.

You can put a stamp on it, you can write an address on it, and you can send it through the mail. No, it’s not a package (包裹). It’s the amazing coconut (椰子)! The coconut is different from most other fruits because every part of it is useful. People have been using coconuts in many different ways. Here are some of them.
One exciting use of the coconut is as a kind of energy. Scientists are working on using coconuts for energy because they are cheap and clean. Coconut oil has already been made into fuel (燃料). It can power cars, trucks, ships and many more.
Students at Baylor University find that coconut husks (外壳) can take in water very well. So mixing coconut husks with dry soil (土壤) helps the soil to hold onto more of the water. The students also find that coconut husks can take the place of plastic in some cases. If this is possible, it will help people use less plastic.
The husk of the coconut is a perfect package. It protects the coconut from harm. That’s why some countries allow people to send the coconut without any packaging. Each year, tourists post about 3,000 of these “coconut postcards”.
Coconuts grow naturally in over 80 countries of the world. They require only sun and proper rain. No special care is needed. Every year, more than 61 million tons of coconuts are produced. It is not surprising, then, that people want to find so many uses for the coconut.
