As we grow up, many of us stop trying new things. We are ___1___ that others will laugh at us if we make mistakes. We want to do everything perfectly from the start. If we can’t do something well at first, we will ___2___ easily. But there is a special kind of power in being a beginner. Here is an example.
Helen, 14, was known ___3___ the “smart girl” in her class, because she always got things right. Though she did well in her lessons, she still felt like trying ___4___ new. So she joined a local pottery (陶艺) class. In her first class, she tried to make a vase (花瓶), but it fell over three times. Helen wanted to run away ___5___ she saw her classmates laughing.
But then she ___6___ the teacher, an old man with forty years’ pottery experience. He was reshaping the vase bit by bit though he made mistakes. He told Helen, “Learning is ___7___ easy. No one starts out perfect. Take failure as a valuable chance to grow,” Helen suddenly ___8___ her fear of failing was just a fear of learning new things. She started to enjoy the mess and the mistakes. Although she didn’t make a perfect vase in the end, she got something better-resilience (抗挫力).
Success is not always about reaching the top of the mountain. Sometimes, it’s about the ___9___ to start and the patience to keep trying. When we choose to be ____10____, we open our minds to new possibilities. As Helen says now, “Being bad at something is the first step towards being good at it.”

固定搭配be known as表示“作为…… 所熟知)、be known for(因……
语境为“尽管她功课很好,她仍然想尝试某样新事物”,something new表示“某件新的事/某个新事物”,用于肯定句符合表达逻辑;nothing(没什么事,语义完全相悖)、anything(任何事,多用于否定/疑问句)、everything(所有事,不符合“尝试某一类新事物”的表意),直接排除。

In busy subway (地铁) stations in Xi’an, China, many volunteers wear small red cards on their backpacks (背包). The cards say, “If you need help, just tap me.” Zhao Chen, a 40-year-old volunteer, came up with this warm idea. He wants to help elderly people and make cities more friendly to them.
Zhao Chen got this idea from his own experience. In 2014, his mother came to the city to help him take care of his newborn baby. She was not familiar with the city and got lost. Zhao could not get in touch with her at that time. Luckily, a college student noticed his mother’s problem and helped her find the way. This small act of kindness touched Zhao deeply. After that, he decided to help elderly strangers in need.
At first, Zhao stuck a piece of paper with the words “If you need help, just tap me.” on his backpack. Later, he used a small red card so that more people could see it easily. This idea won lots of support and became popular online very soon. So far, more than 300,000 volunteers across China have joined this project. These volunteers carry water, tissues (纸巾) and medicine. They help elderly people who feel tired or sick when going out alone.
Zhao believes that the project is not only about helping others, but also about building trust and warmth in society. “Small acts of kindness can add up to make our world a healthier and happier place,” he said. “I’ll continue this meaningful work and encourage more people around me to help others.”
15. What do the small red cards on the volunteers’ backpacks show?
A. The volunteers take care of babies. B. The volunteers are college students.
C. The volunteers are ready to offer help. D. The volunteers work in subway stations.
16. Why did Zhao Chen start the volunteer project?
A. His mother often got lost in big cities. B. He was deeply moved by a student’s kind act.
C. He wanted to work with college students. D. His baby needed help from elderly people.
17. Which of the following can best describe Zhao Chen?
A. Strict and patient. B. Brave and honest. C. Caring and creative. D. Quiet and serious.
18. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. A Warm Volunteer Aid Project B. Stories about Lost Elderly People
C. Kindness from College Students D. Different Ways to Travel in Xi’an
C 16. B 17. C 18. A
原文第一段明确说明卡片文字为“If you need help, just tap me.”,直接对应选项C“志愿者随时准备提供帮助”。
根据第二段中的“Luckily, a college student noticed his mother’s problem and helped her find the way. This small act of kindness touched Zhao deeply. After that, he decided to help elderly strangers in need.”

①Water pollution is a serious problem around the world, and it is difficult to deal with. Traditional water sensors (传感器) can only work in fixed places. As a result, they cannot cover large water bodies like rivers, lakes or oceans. To solve this problem, scientists created a bionic (仿生) tool-a robotic fish.
②The robotic fish is a great example of bionics. It shows how scientists copy nature to solve problems. In fact, the idea of copying nature is not new. The Wright brothers created their first plane by studying the flight of birds. Modern scientists created robotic fish by studying the swimming skills of trout (鳟鱼). Trout are good at moving fast in water with very little energy. By “learning” the way of trout moving, robotic fish can work for ten hours after they get full power.
③According to scientists, the robotic fish has a special soft tail, so it can swim quietly and smoothly under water. It will not scare water animals or harm the underwater environment. Because of the small sensors inside its “body”, it can “taste” water to find harmful things. Once the robotic fish finds water pollution, it will send a warning message to a central computer at once. The robotic fish can even “eat” small pieces of plastic in water bodies and repair itself when it gets broken. Now more and more robotic fish are widely used in rivers, lakes and oceans all over the world. They work together as a team to reduce water pollution.
④By copying nature, scientists have offered lots of possibilities for protecting the environment and improving people’s lives. As one scientist said, “Nature is our best teacher. This invention shows people’s creativity and the value of learning from nature.”
19. What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 1 refer to (指)?
A. Scientists. B. Fixed places.
C. Robotic fish. D. Traditional water sensors.
20. What can a robotic fish do to protect the underwater environment?
①Check water quality and find harmful things.
②Collect information and send out warnings.
③Clean water and repair itself every ten hours.
④Cooperate with other robotic fish and form a water protection group.
A. ①②③ B. ①②④ C. ①③④ D. ②③④
21. Which of the following shows the writer’s idea?
A. The robotic fish may do harm to nature.
B. The robotic fish can work for a short while.
C. The robotic fish will take the place of real fish.
D. The robotic fish is a clever and useful invention.
22. Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
A. B. C. D.
D 20. B 21. D 22. C
“Traditional water sensors (传感器) can only work in fixed places. As a result, they cannot cover large water bodies like rivers, lakes or oceans.”
由第3段“it can ‘taste’ water to find harmful things”可知①正确,由“Once the robotic fish finds water pollution, it will send a warning message to a central computer at once”可知②正确,由“They work together as a team to reduce water pollution”可知④正确,因此选包含①②④的选项。
D
Do you sometimes get angry? Perhaps your answer is yes. Actually, everyone feels angry sometimes. It’s part of being human. However, anger is a strong feeling and it is not easy to control. Sometimes anger can be good, because it can encourage us to change things that make us unhappy.
“Anger is a normal feeling and it’s OK to have these feelings sometimes,” says Dr Nathwani, a psychologist It’s common for teenagers to feel angry. First, the body’s hormones (荷尔蒙) are changing, which can make feelings much stronger. Second, the part of the brain that helps to manage feelings doesn’t fully develop until you’re in your mid-20s.
Being angry does not mean you are a grumpy (脾气坏的) person. Sometimes it suggests something else. “Anger usually comes when we feel hurt, scared or unhappy,” says Dr Nathwani. “It can be a strong feeling that we notice in our bodies. We may feel hot or our hearts may beat fast.” Sometimes you might not even know why you’re feeling this way. Your anger is not always caused by your own stress or other people being unkind. Not being understood by friends or family can also make you angry.
Although it’s OK to feel angry sometimes, it’s not healthy when anger takes over. You might act in a negative way and it can make you hurt others or yourself. Next time you feel angry, try these simple ways to calm down. You can take a deep breath. Deep breathing helps your body get away from the “angry energy”. Taking some time to relax is also a good choice. For example, you can take a short walk, listen to soft music or do simple exercise. Share your feelings with someone you trust. It gives you a break from feeling unhappy all alone. When you talk to them about your anger, they might help you see things in a calmer way.
23. How does the writer develop Paragraph 2?
A. By listing two main reasons. B. By giving some real-life examples.
C. By offering two suggestions. D. By comparing teenagers with adults.
24. Which of the following meanings is suitable (合适的) for the underlined word “beat”?
beat /bi:t/ verb
1. HIT to hit sth hard several times: ◇Somebody was beating at the door.
2. AVOID to avoid sth: ◇If we go early we should beat the traffic.
3. OF HEART to make, or cause sth to make, a regular sound or movement: ◇She’s alive-her heart is still beating.
4. BE TOO DIFFICULT to be too difficult for sb: ◇It is a problem that beats even the experts.
(From the dictionary)
A. 1. B. 2. C. 3. D. 4.
25. What is TRUE about the last paragraph according to the passage?
A. It’s OK to allow anger to take over.
B. You’ll feel calmer when you try breathing exercise.
C. Soft music can stop bad feelings completely.
D. Spending time all alone is a good way to control anger.
26. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. Anger does not do any good to you. B. Hormones decide teenagers’ feelings.
C. Family problems cause most anger. D. We can deal with anger in proper ways.
A 24. C 25. B 26. D
文中划线词所在句子为“We may feel hot or our hearts may beat fast”(我们可能会感到发热或心脏跳得很快)。
根据最后一段“Deep breathing helps your body get away from the ‘angry energy’”可知,深呼吸有助于身体摆脱“愤怒能量”,使人冷静,故B项正确。A项与文中“it’s not healthy when anger takes over”矛盾;C项“completely”(完全)表述过于绝对;D项与文中建议“Share your feelings... gives you a break from feeling unhappy all alone”(和他人分享你的感受,能让你不再独自承受不愉快的情绪)矛盾。

A. B. C. D.
