Lexie Alford, 21, said she recently became the youngest person to visit every country. Though her success hasn’t been shown to be true by the Guinness Book of World Records, Alford said she had been to 196 countries. While her trips may have looked attractive and exciting on her social media, Alford faced various difficulties such as getting lost in new places, running short of money, and falling sick with malaria (疟疾) or food poisoning.
For most people, the biggest problem for seeing the world is not having enough money, but Alford managed to pay for her travels mostly by herself. She started doing many jobs and savings all the money she earned since she was 12 years old. Also, her mother owns a travel agency and it helps her find the best prices and book in advance, which helps her save a lot of money on flights and hotels.
As a solo female traveler, Alford thought being safe was the most important thing when deciding how long to stay in a country, besides money and her own interest. She spent over a month in countries like Egypt and Switzerland, where there were many things she could do and ways to keep those trips from being too expensive. Then there are some countries like Mali, South Sudan, and Somalia which she would have loved to spend more than a few days visiting, but unfortunately she couldn’t afford the proper steps to travel safely there. Despite feeling lonely at times, Alford thinks that solo travel is a great experience that everyone should have at least once in their lives.
After her travels, Alford now believes that every problem has a solution if you work hard enough. You also have to give up a lot of things if you want to travel the world, but if it’s something you really love, you just need courage to go for it.
41. What do we know about Alford’s travel to 196 countries?
A. It was easy and fun all the time.
B. She faced some hard situations.
C. She visited all countries with her mother.
D. She had no health problems at all.
42. How did Alford get money for her travels?
A. She mainly used her own money from work and saving.
B. Her mother gave her all the money.
C. She got free flights and hotels.
D. She borrowed money from friends.
43. Why did Alford stay in Mali for only a few days?
A. She didn’t like the things to do in those countries.

根据第一段中“Though her success hasn’t been shown to be true by the Guinness Book of World Records, Alford said she had been to 196 countries. While her trips may have looked attractive and exciting on her social media, Alford faced various difficulties such as getting lost in new places, running short of money, and falling sick with malaria (疟疾) or food poisoning.(尽管吉尼斯世界纪录尚未证实这一成就,但Alford称自己已到访过 196 个国家。虽然她的旅行在社交媒体上看起来光鲜又刺激,但她实则面临着各种困难 —— 比如在陌生地方迷路、资金短缺,还曾感染疟疾或食物中毒。)”可知,Alford在去196个国家的旅行中面临了一些艰难的情况。故选B。
【42题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“She started doing many jobs and saving all the money she earned since she was 12 years old. Also, her mother owns a travel agency and it helps her find the best prices and book in advance, which helps her save a lot of money on flights and hotels.(她从12岁起就开始打多份工,把赚到的钱全部存了起来。此外,她的母亲经营着一家旅行社,这能帮她找到最优价格并提前预订,让她在机票和酒店上省下不少钱。)”可知,Alford旅行用的钱主要是自己工作赚的和存的。故选A。
根据第三段中“Then there are some countries like Mali, South Sudan, and Somalia which she would have loved to spend more than a few days visiting, but unfortunately she couldn’t afford the proper steps to travel safely there.(还有一些国家,如马里、南苏丹和索马里,她很想在那里多待几天,但不幸的是,她负担不起安全旅行的适当费用。)”
根据第三段中“As a solo female traveler, Alford thought being safe was the most important thing when deciding how long to stay in a country, besides money and her own interest.(作为一名solo旅行的女性,Alford认为,除了金钱和自己的兴趣之外,安全是决定在一个国家停留多长时间的最重要因素。)”和最后一段中“Despite feeling lonely at times, Alford thinks that solo travel is a great experience that everyone should have at least once in their lives.(尽管有时会感到孤独,但Alford觉得,独自旅行是一种很棒的体验,每个人一生至少都该有一次。)”
根据最后一段中“You also have to give up a lot of things if you want to travel the world, but if it’s something you really love, you just need courage to go for it.(如果你想环游世界,你还必须放弃很多东西,但如果这是你真正喜欢的事情,你只需要有勇气去做。)” 故选A。
C
Have you ever noticed this? When you line up at the supermarket checkout counter, the other lines always seem to move faster than yours. You might check your phone again and again, and even wish you’d picked a different line. Now, a report from The New York Times looks into the math and psychology (心理学) behind it. It also gives simple tips on how to pick the fastest line — whether you’re in a supermarket, a bank waiting to take out money, or a coffee shop waiting for your drink.
Dan Meyer, a US mathematician, says a cart full of things doesn’t tell you everything. “Every person needs some time to say hello and goodbye to the cashier.” he explains. That fixed time is about 41 seconds per person. Each small thing in the basket, like a cola can or breakfast box. Let’s see an example. If there are five people in front of you, each with 10 things, you’ll wait 355 seconds (that’s almost 6 minutes!). But if there’s just one person ahead with 50 things, you’ll only wait 191 seconds (about 3 minutes). It’s surprising, but the numbers don’t lie!
It’s also important to watch the people in line. For example, elderly people usually move more slowly — they might take time to put their wallet back or carry their bags. The things in their carts matter too: four bottles of the same milk check out faster than four different items (like a bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, a carton of eggs, and a jar of jam), because the cashier can scan the same item quickly. What’s more, US science writer Robert Samuel says about 90 percent of people are right-handed, so they naturally turn to the right when choosing a line. Going left instead gives you a better shot at a faster line. Try these tips next time you’re waiting in line, and you might save time to do something more fun!
46. What does the report look into according to Paragraph 1?
A. Why phones are useful in lines.
B. The math and psychology behind slow lines.
C. How cashiers can work faster.
D. Differences between store and bank lines.
47. How long will you wait if there is one person ahead with 10 things?
A. 71 seconds. B. 101 seconds. C. 131 seconds. D. 161 seconds.
48. Which of the following lines may move fastest?
A. One elderly person buying 10 different things.
B. One young person buying 10 different things.
C. One elderly person buying 10 same things.
D. One young person buying 10 same things.
49. What advice does Robert Samuel give for choosing a faster line?
A. Studying the customers.
B. Choosing the left line.
C. Picking someone with a full cart.
D. Studying the goods customers bought.
50. What does the story mainly talk about?
A. How to communicate with cashiers effectively.
B. The psychology of customers in the supermarket.
C. The best time to go shopping at the supermarket.
D. Tips on choosing the fastest line when waiting in line.
B 47. A 48. D 49. B 50. D

根据第一段中“Now, a report from The New York Times looks into the math and psychology (心理学) behind it.(如今,《纽约时报》的一篇报道深入探究了这背后的数学原理与心理学因素)”可知,该报告探究了慢速队伍背后的数学和心理学原理。
根据第二段中“That fixed time is about 41 seconds per person. Each small thing in the basket, like a cola can or breakfast box. Let’s see an example. If there are five people in front of you, each with 10 things, you’ll wait 355 seconds (that’s almost 6 minutes!). But if there’s just one person ahead with 50 things, you’ll only wait 191 seconds (about 3 minutes).(每个人所需的这段固定时间大约为41秒。 故选A。
根据第三段中“For example, elderly people usually move more slowly — they might take time to put their wallet back or carry their bags. The things in their carts matter too: four bottles of the same milk check out faster than four different items (like a bottle of milk, a loaf of bread, a carton of eggs, and a jar of jam), because the cashier can scan the same item quickly.(例如,老年人通常行动更为迟缓——他们可能需要花些时间把钱包放回包里,或是提着购物袋。他们购物车里的东西也很关键:四瓶同样的牛奶结账速度要比四件不同商品(比如一瓶牛奶、一条面包、一盒鸡蛋和一罐果酱)快,因为收银员能快速扫描相同的商品)”可知,老年人通常行动较慢,且相同物品结账更快,结合选项可知,一个年轻人买10件相同的东西的队伍可能移动得最快。故选D。
【49题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第三段中“What’s more, US science writer Robert Samuel says about 90 percent of people are right-handed, so they naturally turn to the right when choosing a line. Going left instead gives you a better shot at a faster line.(此外,美国科学作家罗伯特·塞缪尔表示,大约90%的人是右撇子,所以他们在选择队伍时自然会偏向右侧。而选择左侧队伍反而会让你更有机会排到更快的队伍)”可知,Robert Samuel建议选择左边的队伍以获得更快的结账速度。故选B。
【50题详解】
主旨大意题。 根据第一段中“It also gives simple tips on how to pick the fastest line — whether you’re in a supermarket, a bank waiting to take out money, or a coffee shop waiting for your drink.(它还提供了如何选择最快排队的简单提示——无论你是在超市、银行等着取钱,还是在咖啡店等饮料)”及全文可知,本文主要讲述了如何选择排队时最快的队伍的相关技巧和建议。
In January, some special artworks were shown at Lillian M. Jacobs School in Hull, Massachusetts The sculptures are made entirely of rubbish collected by sixth-graders!
The school is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean. In February 2024, the students spent a cold day cleaning up a nearly 1-mile area of Nantasket Beach. They collected more than 40 bags of rubbish.
“I often go to the beach and don’t notice the rubbish,” says Derek DeGallo, who is now a seventh-grader. “But when I looked for it, I realized how much there was.”
Every year, billions of pounds of rubbish end up in oceans all over the world. The students found many things on the beach, from fishing lines to old shopping carts. Most of it is plastic. This waste makes beaches dirty and can hurt sea animals — many get stuck in the plastic or eat it by mistake, falling ill.
After their beach cleanup, the students sorted the rubbish into groups like glass, plastic and foam and counted each piece of rubbish. They sent the data to the Center for Coastal Studies, an organization helps protect the ocean near Massachusetts.
Then, a local artist named Jackie Ranney and the school’s teachers helped the students turn the rubbish into sculptures of fish and other sea creatures, like whales and seahorses. The artworks show people how important it is to take care of the earth.
“I hope kids see these artworks and think about how they use plastic,” says Ranney, the local artist. “They might ask themselves, ‘Do I throw away and recycle my rubbish in the right way?’”
Derek, now a seventh-grader, feels proud that he and his classmates helped stop rubbish from getting into the ocean.
“Our town’s beaches are wonderful,” he says. “We want to make sure they stay clean.”

For most people the biggest problem for seeing the world is not having enough money, but Alford managed to pay for her travels mostly by herself.

For example elderly people usually move more slowly — they might take time to put their wallet back or carry their bags.

A. 71 seconds.
