Passage 1
(24-25高一上·江苏常州·期末)
“Happy New Year, everyone!” Jimmy’s dad put a plate of hot pancakes down on the center of the table. “It’s the first day of the year. What’s your resolution (决心要做的事) for the next twelve months?” Jimmy’s sister, Julia, spoke first. “I want to get an A in math. I’m going to practice my flashcards every day.” Julia poured syrup (糖浆) on her pancakes and began to eat.
“What about you, Jimmy? What’s your big goal for the year? ”
Jimmy thought about it. He had never made a New Year’s resolution before. “Does a resolution have to be about school? ” he asked. Dad smiled, “No, Jimmy. A resolution can be about anything you want. It’s just a promise you make to yourself to try to do something in the future. ” Hearing that, Jimmy sat and thought. He was already good at math. He wasn't sure he wanted to make a promise about doing extra homework. He would like to be better at baseball and hit a home run in the summer. It would be hard, though, to practice baseball in the winter when there was snow on the ground.
“I'll have to think about it, ” Jimmy said. Then he went back to his room. He did his best thinking on his bed, but he had to step over all of his toy trucks and a few dirty socks to get there. He also had to move his comic books and stuffed animals off of his bed before he could sit down.
Jimmy looked around his room. It was pretty messy. He would have to clean it up before he could have friends over on Sunday. It usually took all day Saturday to clean up. That meant Jimmy couldn't play until he was finished.
“That’s it! ” Jimmy cried. “I’ll clean my room every Friday right after school. Dad will be happy, and I will be able to play all weekend. ” Jimmy smiled. He was happy that he found a resolution that would make his New Year much better than the past year.
The following Friday arrived, and Jimmy remembered his resolution.

From then on Jimmy never forgot the resolution, resulting in changes and benefits even beyond cleaning.

Passage 1
(24-25高一上·江苏常州·期末)
Emma, a high school student in a small town, was an animal lover and often volunteered at the local animal shelter. One sunny Saturday morning, Emma went to the shelter as usual. She was planning to spend the whole day taking care of the animals there.
When she arrived, she found that a new litter of puppies had just been brought in. They were so cute and tiny, but they seemed a bit scared in the new environment. Emma’s heart went out to them immediately. She started by cleaning their cages and giving them fresh food and water. Then she sat down on the floor and gently picked up one of the puppies. The puppy was shaking a little, but as Emma stroked (抚摸) its soft fur and spoke softly to it, it gradually calmed down.
While Emma was playing with the puppies, an old man with sad eyes walked into the shelter. He was in rags (衣衫褴褛). He looked around and his eyes stopped on the puppies. Emma noticed him and asked if he was interested in adopting a pet. The old man said he lost his dog a few months ago and had been feeling very lonely ever since. He thought maybe a puppy could bring some joy back into his life.
Emma was very excited to hear that. She showed the old man all the puppies. The old man seemed to like a little brown puppy the most. He said this brown puppy looked so much like the dog he had lost several months ago. He kept stroking the puppy, with his eyes full of affection. But when he asked about the adoption (收养) process, he found out that he needed to pay an adoption fee and also provide some proof (证明) of his living conditions. The old man’s face fell. He said he lived a hard life and didn’t have all the necessary papers with him. Emma clearly felt the old man’s disappointment and she was eager to help him.

Passage 2
(23-24高一上·江苏泰州·期末)
Humphrey and his wife Hildy had ten white sheep, eight black-faced sheep, and five long-legged lambs. Early every autumn, they would drive their sheep onto the ground beside the big, yellow barn(畜棚). Then Humphrey would hold each sheep still while Hildy cut off the wool.
When they finished, there were twenty-three soft piles of wool on the floor, and twenty-three pink, skinny sheep jumping around happily as they were freed into the field. Humphrey and Hildy collected piles of wool and put them in the house.
The next few weeks were very busy. They finally finished on cold, fall evening. Twenty-three bright, woolly blankets lay in cheerful piles around the kitchen. They would sell the warm blankets when winter came. By the time the snow flew, the sheep’s wool would have grown long enough to keep them nice and warm. Humphrey and Hildy both smiled, content with a job well done, and went to bed early.
The alarm clock went off at 5: 00 a.m. Humphrey and Hildy listened to the local weather report. “The earliest cold air in history,” The announcer said, “has brought a freeze(霜冻)to our area! So put warm coverings, folks!” They stared at each other in horror.
“The sheep!” shouted Humphrey. They hurried to put on their clothes and raced outside. What a freeze it was! The golden autumn grass fell to the ground, and the sheep without wool were shaking with cold painfully. Their pink skins had turned blue.

Passage 1
(24-25高一上·江苏南京·期末)
As I sat on our favorite bench in a park, memories of my best friend, Lily, flooded my mind ― our endless laughter, shared secrets, and the adventures that had brought us so close. But everything changed when Lily got the news that her family was moving to a city a few hours away. I was excited for her new life, but I couldn’t shake off the feeling of fear in my stomach. What if we drew apart? What if everything we had built together was forgotten? In order not to let that happen, I came up with an idea. “Let’s start keeping a diary!” I suggested excitedly, “We can write about everything on the same diary and mail it to each other every week! That way, we’ll always be a part of each other’s lives.”
For the first few months, the diary became our lifeline. We filled it with stories about our new lives, I loved hearing about Lily’s new school and friends, while she enjoyed updates on the challenges I met at school. But soon, things began to change, and our schedules got filled up with schoolwork and other stuff (事务). The diary entries started to reduce, and our phone calls became less frequent. One evening, when I saw a picture from one of our last adventures ― a photo of us laughing so hard together ― inspiration hit: we could plan a weekend trip! I quickly called Lily, suggesting a camping trip for us to explore a new place together. To my excitement, she immediately agreed. We searched the key steps to set up a tent, insert (插) the tent poles into the ground, pull the tent up and straighten it out.
When the day finally arrived, I put the diary in my backpack and headed to the camping place ― a cute little park with tall trees and a quiet lake. When we arrived, the sky was clear blue, but it wasn’t long before dark clouds appeared.
As we began to lay out our tent, the first drops of rain fell.

Passage 2
(24-25高一上·江苏盐城亭湖区·期末)
Lily and Amy were best friends. They were both members of the English Drama Club of their school. Recently, they had been preparing together for an English short play A Tale of Friendship organized by their drama teacher Ms. Thompson.
The play, aiming to reflect the true friendship among peers, would be put on at New Year’s eve. Lily, cast as the main character, was eager to bring her character’s journey to life, hoping to inspire her classmates through her performance. While practicing, Lily, an enthusiastic and passionate performer, poured her heart and soul into every scene, meticulously (一丝不苟地) studying her lines and striving for emotional realness. However, Amy tended to be quiet and reserved in her role play. She got pretty calm on stage, which, in Lily’s eyes, meant she was not committed enough to the performance. The differences between them resulted in several heated moments, where both of the girls found themselves at odds (意见不合) , unable to see eye to eye.
Finally, Lily did not want to hold back any more. “You’re just too calm for this scene, Amy,” she said, frustration evident in her voice. “The audience needs to feel the passion! ”
Amy sighed, her eyes softening with a hint of sadness. “But Lily, the story isn’t just about the loud moments. Personally, the role in the drama is a quiet one. The unspoken words move the audience deeply.”
Lily was frozen with anger. She turned around and left the stage without a word. Amy stood there as still as a statue, her eyebrows knitted tightly together in a deep frown.
The practice had to be stopped.

Passage 1
(24-25高一上·江苏南京·期末)
At the age of 30, I resigned to start my own business. I felt like I was on the right path. I was busy making plans happen. For months, I kept myself moving. Even when I wasn’t working, I was thinking about work. There was never enough time, and I was afraid that if I stopped to relax, I might let someone down. But the more I worked, the less I seemed to get done.
When I started to feel really tired, I told myself I just needed to work harder and get more organized. But something was wrong. I was very tired and my body hurt all over. My smart watch kept buzzing (嗡嗡声), telling me my heart was beating too fast. I had tried hard to be healthy — I stopped drinking, changed my diet, and lost weight. I thought things would get better, but they didn’t.
Finally, I went to a doctor. “How’s your stress?” the doctor asked. I didn’t think I was very stressed, but tests showed I had a disease called Graves’ disease, which can get worse because of stress.
The next day, I ran into an old friend, Cindy. We hadn’t seen each other for a while, and Cindy looked at me with concern. “You look tired. I don’t know how you are doing, but you seems to be wearing out.”
“Things have been a bit crazy lately,” I admitted.
“Maybe it’s time to take a break,” Cindy suggested. As we said goodbye, she added, “It was good to see you. You’ve lost weight; make sure you take care of yourself.” She waved and left.
Reflecting on my previous behavior, I realized I had been missing the simple pleasures in life — the little but meaningful things that help me relax and recharge, like bonding with my family, engaging in community activities to help those in need, interacting with friends and visiting my favorite bookstore.
Days later, Cindy called and asked, “There’s a charity event dedicated to helping the left-behind children and elderly people who live alone in our community this weekend. Would you like to go with me and offer your help?”

Passage 2
(23-24高一上·江苏常州·期末)
That December morning, I decided to take Apple to pay a visit to my aunt. I’d had Apple only a couple of weeks, but we’d become nearly inseparable. I opened the car door. Apple jumped in and settled down on the passenger seat. I started the car and set off.
It’s always tricky turning around. I live in a remote area up in the hills, surrounded by woods. I have to drive up the mountain to get to my driveway, which is hardly wide enough for one car and ends at a steep (陡峭的) valley.
I twisted around and backed up slowly. Just then, a flash of sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to cover my eyes. I felt a shake as the left rear (后部的) part of the car dropped. Oh, no! The car slipped and rolled. We landed upside down. I felt a sharp pain in my chest and my legs. I couldn’t move. I looked over to find Apple. She was still in the passenger seat and fortunately she was okay.
I grabbed my cell phone and dialed 911. But just as I’d feared; there was no signal (信号) at the bottom of this valley. Now what? Windy, my closest neighbor, lived a quarter mile uphill from me, and had her own driveway. It was unlikely that she or anyone else would drive up to my house.
Apple barked nervously. At least I could get her out of here. There was a hole in the driver’s side rear window. “Come on, Apple,” I said. Painfully, I reached over, picked her up and gently put her head through the hole. “Go home, baby.” She jumped to the ground and raced up the side of the valley.
As the sun set, it turned cold. I trembled with cold and pain. Had Apple found her way home? She hardly knew the area. My pulse (脉搏) was weakening. I closed my eyes. Suddenly I was awakened by loud barks.

Passage 3
(23-24高一上·江苏常州·期末)
The New York Marathon is my goal for this year. I know I am never going to win a race but now, when I get anything negative, I will think of the kind gentleman who really believed, “You very good… you very fast.”
At the time, I was living in the Bay Area, and my mother had come to visit for a few days. On the last day of her stay, I was preparing to go out for a run. I picked up a T-shirt I just bought the other day from a Chinese clothing shop — it had some Chinese characters on the front, and a scene of Honolulu Chinatown on the back. I didn’t speak Chinese, but somehow this special T-shirt was quite soft and good for exercise.Working in a very negative environment, I found morning runs very beneficial — body tired but mind awake.
And I had always met an elderly Chinese gentleman walking on the opposite side of the trail (道路) when I was running on other mornings. I had always said, “Good morning,” and he had always smiled warmly and nodded his head slightly.
As I was going out the door, my mother suddenly said, “I don’t think running is so hot — that famous runner died.” I started to recount what I had read about Jim Fixx, and how running had probably been the contributing factor to his living far longer than most of the other members of his family, but I knew there was absolutely no point.
As I started running on my favorite trail, I found I couldn’t shake my mother’s statement. I was so discouraged that I could hardly run. I began thinking, “Why do I run at all? Serious runners probably think I look silly! I might have a heart attack on the trail — my dad had a fatal (致命的) heart attack at 50 years old, and he was seemingly in better shape than I am.”

Passage 4
(23-24高一上·江苏泰州·期末)
There was nothing I wanted more than a trophy (奖杯). I was twelve, and the hope of placing a trophy on my dresser woke me up in the middle of the night.
All of my friends had trophies. Any of those would have excited me.
However, the problem for me was that I had no skills or gifts that would enable me to get a trophy.
My elder brother, Alan, had shelves of trophies, and most of them came from horse races. Before Dad died, he had bought each of us a horse. I named my horse Colonel. Alan’s was named Otis. When Alan kicked Otis’sides, he would run. Colonel always wanted to follow, and I could feel him speeding up, but I was afraid of falling, so I would pull on the ropes and we would fall behind.
After my father died, my mother seldom went to the stables (马厩) where we boarded the horses. Mostly she stayed in her room. Alan cooked our meals and paid our bills with money he made by waiting tables. This was also the year when I started smoking, cutting class, and hanging out with kids who, like me, had no trophies and couldn’t care less.
When the worst of my report cards arrived, Alan angrily asked, “What do you think you’re doing? Who do you think you’re fooling?” I answered, “I truly don’t know.” I just felt life was meaningless, dull and aimless.
Alan started picking me up from school. He didn’t allow me to stay with bad kids, and we drove to the stables to ride until night fell. Through all of this, I still loved riding and still found comfort in being around Colonel, but I hated being made to ride.
After a week of being forced to spend my afternoons with him, I was angry. Alan just said, “I entered you in the horse race. It’s in two weeks.” I was surprised and excited, but I didn’t let on. I just asked angrily, “Why?”
“You still want a trophy, right?” he said.

Passage 5
(23-24高一上·江苏泰州兴化·期末)
I was in my early twenties. I had graduated from college with a degree in Education but still couldn’t find a full-time teaching job. I only did short-time jobs here and there in different schools. I waited each morning then for the phone to ring so that I could work as a substitute (替补者) that day.
It wasn’t easy. One day I would be teaching high school science and the next day I would be running after little kids in a kindergarten around the playground. This time I found myself in a local grade school working as a 5th grade teacher for the day. Although it was a short-time job, I was determined not to just slide by carelessly.
I went over the lesson plans, taught the subjects, and stayed positive with the students. I smiled, praised the kids when they got something right, and encouraged them if they didn’t. I was determined to learn from the great teachers I had when I was a boy and not the critical (挑剔的) ones who always left me feeling bad.
At the end of the day, I designed a little goodbye program for the students. I had prepared dozens of small paper bags in advance, each containing a chocolate bar and a small card with encouraging messages, such as “Where there is a will, there is a way” “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” and “A friend in need is a friend indeed”. The cards also had my names on them.
The students were very excited and happy about this activity. They excitedly opened the paper bags of the gifts and ate the chocolates while reading the words on the cards. They also exchanged cards and read different sayings. In this way, I gave the children a happy day.

Passage 1
(24-25高一上·江苏无锡·期末)
There is nothing more wonderful than the smell of the Adirondack air! It fills your lungs with purity and freshness that motivates a love for living. Every weekend in the summer, my father would plan a trip from our home in upstate New York to one of the splendid lakes nestled among the tall pines and thick forests of the Adirondack Mountains. There were no favorites; instead, each lake was an adventure to explore and enjoy.
One trip that I will never forget was a visit to Oneida Lake at the foothills of the mountains. After arriving at the lake beach area, we emptied the car of our picnic supplies, towels, blankets and beach chairs, carrying them through a wooded path that seemed like a forever distance. Once we located the perfect picnic spot, my dad, sister and I ran into the splashing waves with our beach ball, leaving my mother behind to “set up”. In the lake, we immediately played “monkey in the middle” for at least an hour, and then after retiring the ball, my father let us dive from his knee, throwing us up in the air and turning us over like thick pancakes on a grill. This timeless game went on and on as our begging for “more, more” never stopped.
When we finally tired of our games, my dad stopped to watch my older sister. She loved synchronized swimming and started practicing skills that her team used in competition. My father, being an athlete himself, was absorbed in her show. I was sad that no one was playing with me; no one was watching me. I became bored and jealous watching her show off. I was in a sulk and decided to swim by myself and try some of sister’s skills on my own in deeper water, far from both of them. The waves were getting stronger, but I didn’t care. I just wanted to do what my sister could do so that I could catch my father’s attention.

Passage 2
(23-24高一上·江苏泗阳中学·期末)
It took place in a teacher’s family. One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room after school, when he accidentally threw the ball at a vase sitting on the shelf. The vase dropped to the floor, and a large piece broke off. What made Ben more upset was that the vase was not a common decoration but an antique (古董), which was handed down through generations from the 18th century. It was also his mother’s favourite possession. To cover his terrible action, the terrified boy glued the pieces together hastily and put the vase back in its place.
As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks (裂纹) that evening. To her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he had broken the vase. Fearing punishment, the suddenly inspired boy said that a neighbor’s cat jumped in from the window and he couldn’t drive it away, no matter how hard he tried. It raced around the living room and finally knocked the vase off its shelf. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying, for all the windows were closed before she left for work each morning and opened after she returned. However, in the face of her son’s nervous eyes and the suspicious looks of the other family members, Ben’s mother remained calm. She realized she shouldn’t just simply blame and punish her son for lying. She came up with another idea.
Before going to bed, the boy found a note from his mother in his room, asking him to go to the study at once. The boy thought he would now be punished, but, as he had already lied, he decided to deny everything, no matter how angry his mum became.
In the study, calmly bathed in the light, his mother’s face showed no sign of anger. On seeing her son push open the door and cautiously enter, she took a chocolate box out of a drawer and gave him one.

Passage 3
(23-24高一上·江苏南通·期末)
Devin opened his closet door for the third time and pulled out his shoes. “Mom, have you seen my baseball glove?” he called.
“I’ve looked everywhere. When was the last time you had it?” Mom asked.
“Yesterday,” Devin said. “I was playing catch with Silvio after his birthday party.”
“I hope you didn’t leave it there,” Mom said. Devin’s cousin, Silvio, lived 45 minutes away. Mom pulled out her phone and texted Uncle Gabe.
Devin still kneeled on the floor and checked under his bed. Within a minute, Mom’s phone received a message from Uncle Gabe, saying Devin’s baseball glove was there. Devin shook his head. “I have a game in an hour! Dad’s a lefty (左撇子), so I can’t borrow his glove.” “Use mine,” said Mom. “But it’s a softball glove and pink,” said Devin doubtfully. But Mom said there was not much difference and that her team won the city championship with their pink gloves last summer. “People will think it’s a girl’s,” said Devin. “Some of the best players on your team are girls,” Mom said. She handed Devin her glove. He tried it on. “Top of the line,” Mom said. “I had the fewest errors of any infielder (内野手) in the league.” Devin nodded. Both of his parents were excellent athletes, and he was too. He snapped the glove open and shut, open and shut, thinking, “I guess this glove will do.”
Then Mom drove Devin to the field. She told Devin that Dad would meet them there and she reminded Devin not to forget her pink glove.
Before the game, Devin practiced pitching (投球) deep into the center field. He hit several more pitches before the coach told him to warm up at the base.
His teammates noticed his glove. “Isn’t that a girl’s glove?” Jordan, one of his teammates, asked. Devin frowned. “It’s my mom’s. I don’t have mine.” “Pink glove! Pink glove!” several other boys also laughed.

Bailey Davis, who had been in love with her boyfriend for more than two years, like many others, recently experienced this joyous occasion when she got engaged. As for the future, Bailey knew that no matter what challenges or obstacles came her way, she would always hold onto the memories and experiences she shared with her partner. She has been proudly wearing her beautiful engagement ring ever since, valuing it as a symbol of her love and commitment. However, her happiness was short-lived.
As a salesgirl of a large chain store, Bailey was as busy as a bee, going on business alone from time to time. On this particular day, Columbus, Ohio was her destination. She got up very early, packed all her baggage, and drove there happily. While at a rest stop, she used the restroom. Here, she took off her ring. But little did she know that she’d also leave it there. It wasn’t until she arrived in Columbus that she realized her ring was missing. “I had driven already two hours away to Columbus before I realized it wasn’t on my hand,” Bailey recalled. “I was shaky and sweating — I felt like I was going to puke (呕吐).” By the time she returned to the rest stop bathroom, the ring was gone. At that moment, Bailey felt certain she would never see her precious ring again.
Bailey’s heart began to sink at the thought of the special value of the ring. For her, it was not just a piece of jewelry but a symbol of the love and commitment she shared with her partner. She couldn’t help but feel a deep sense of loss and disappointment.

Passage 2
(23-24高一上·江苏泰州·期末)
Sarah was never a morning person. The alarm ringing at 6: 30 a. m. was her daily terrible sound. But one thing made the horrible early hours acceptable —the comforting pleasant smell of fresh coffee moving through the air. Her favorite coffee shop was just a few minutes from her apartment, and it became her morning call.
One sunny morning, after turning off the alarm clock, Sarah rushed to get dressed. She was going to have an important presentation at work, and she needed the caffeine (咖啡因) more than ever. She grabbed her keys, rushed out of the door, and made her way to the familiar coffee shop.
As she joined the line of cars in front of the coffee shop, Sarah couldn’t help but feel the familiar rush of expectation. The smell of roasted coffee beans and the thought of that first drink was her little daily enjoyment.
The line moved slowly forward, and soon, Sarah found herself near the window. She reached for her wallet to pay, but before she could hand over her bank card, the waiter smiled and said,” Your coffee has been covered by the car ahead of you.”
Sarah was confused. ”Really? “she asked, both surprised and thankful.
The waiter nodded. ”Yes, the woman in the car ahead wanted to pay it forward today. Enjoy your coffee!“
With a warm smile. Sarah took the free coffee. The unexpected act of kindness put a smile on her face, making her presentation feel a little less frightening. Before she drove away. Sarah, in her outside back mirror, saw a car approaching from behind.

Passage 3
(24-25高一上·江苏泰州·期末)
I knew there wouldn’t be any presents that Christmas, which made me a bit sad. I was twelve and the oldest. My sisters, Angie and Susan, didn’t understand that our parents had no money but I saw the nearly empty cupboard. I knew Dad had been laid off.
Dad was a proud man who had trouble asking for help, especially when it came to finances (财务). In fact, he rarely accepted gifts of money for his struggling family. Food and clothing for his little girls and wife were thankfully accepted, but money was not.
Grandma Margaret, our neighbor across the street, was a good friend to my mom when she so desperately (极度) needed one. My mom’s family all lived far away, and we were lucky if we saw them once a year. We couldn’t afford the gas. So, Margaret became someone in whom my momma could confide (与……交心). Either Momma told Margaret about the financial struggles that holiday season, or Margaret saw there were no presents under the tree.
One day near Christmas, we heard a knock on the door, and in walked Grandma Margaret with a huge bag and a delicately wrapped (包装精美的) present. She walked over to the tree and placed that present under its branches. “For your mommy and daddy,” she said with a smile. Then she opened the huge bag and began calling our names. Each time she handed one of us girls a gift, she would say, “Not until Christmas morning!” We were excited!
After she left, we rushed to the tree and started shaking the packages, trying to figure out what was in each brightly wrapped package. I walked over to check my mom and dad’s gift. I picked it up and tried to imagine what might be inside. New plates for the dinner table? No, our dinner plates were fine. I’d have to wait until Christmas Day to find out what was inside.

Passage 4
(23-24高一上·江苏南通·期末)
That school year God blessed me with two trusted children—Tom and Mary. Whenever I went out for training, programs or personal matters, I left everything to them.
However, the peace was ruined when one day I lost one thousand pesos (比索) in my bag. I always kept my wallet near me. I only chose my trusted students to get near my things. I kept the door of my office closed every time I went for my classes. My spine trembled upon my seeing my money was no longer there. I scanned my wallet, my secret pocket and everything in my room. But all my attempts were in vain.
I was angry. That morning before my class ended, I appealed to everyone to help me catch the “thief”. At 4:00 in the afternoon that day, I reminded them about my warning of returning my money before investigation took place. Then suddenly, a boy called Larry said, “Miss, look at the paper on the floor!”
My heart beat wildly when I saw the crumpled paper which I thought useless. I replied to them immediately upon holding the paper. “Yes, here it is!” I showed it to them. They urged me to open the paper. I opened it and to my surprise, I saw the one thousand pesos! I felt relieved. Then, a letter appeared among the banknotes.
“Miss, I am sorry that I stole the money. I returned it. Do not tell my classmates that I returned the money and do not mention anything about it in class, because it hurts me. Thank you, Miss. But I can’t tell you why I stole your money.”
Oh my God! My brain flashed the handwriting of my trusted boy—the “thief”. I was sure this was Tom’s handwriting.

Pamela Jones is a nurse, mom, and grandmother and she has over 25 years’ experience in the field of medicine. After she graduated from her medical school with her medical degree, she was devoted to numerous hospitals in Michigan and more. She is also a volunteer of a non-profit organization, which mainly helps some people suffering from different kinds of slight diseases and offers some medical care.
Last Tuesday, Pamela was driving on the way home after seeing a patient. She was traveling westbound on 1-276 around 8:30 pm. Then suddenly, she was hit by a car that switched lanes on the Pennsylvania Turnpike. Her car turned, flipped over and crashed into an embankment. Her car was badly damaged. The causing-traffic-trouble car was damaged too, but it fled away. Thankfully, she survived. However, she could not remember much about what happened.
Saving lives is a daily thing for Nurse Pamela Jones. But, at this time, it was she who needed to be saved. Unfortunately, dozens of cars moved past her but no one took the time to stop and help her. “There must have been 150 cars that drove by,” Pamela recalled. She couldn’t move and her phone was out of reach, so she had to wait for help in her car.
Mike Lottier and his son Drew were driving on the way home, too. They had just returned from the city where Drew’s grandparents lived. It was Drew who first found her car. He noticed that glass debris was everywhere, the sunroof was destroyed, and the car was crashed out of shape. 主题01 人与自我——家庭生活
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
From then on Jimmy never forgot the resolution, resulting in changes and benefits even beyond cleaning.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
The following Friday arrived, and Jimmy remembered his resolution. As soon as he got home from school, he put his backpack down and started cleaning his room. He picked up his toys, organized his comic books, and even folded his clothes. It was hard work, but he felt proud when he finished. His dad noticed the clean room and smiled, “Great job, Jimmy!” That evening, Jimmy felt relaxed knowing he had the whole weekend free to play.
From then on Jimmy never forgot the resolution, resulting in changes and benefits even beyond cleaning. He found that keeping his room tidy helped him stay organized with his homework and school projects. His friends also started complimenting his neat room when they visited. Jimmy realized that small, consistent efforts could make a big difference. By sticking to his resolution, he not only improved his habits but also gained more time and energy for the things he loved.

【答案】
Emma made a call to the manager of the shelter immediately. She explained the situation to him and asked if there was any way they could help the old man adopt the puppy without all the usual requirements. The manager listened carefully and then said he understood how much the old man needed a companion. After a brief discussion, they decided to make an exception for this special case. Emma was thrilled and quickly went to tell the old man the good news. His face lit up with joy and gratitude as he thanked Emma repeatedly. With a spring in his step, he left the shelter, the little brown puppy nestled securely in his arms.
A few weeks later, Emma received a letter and some pictures of the dog from the old man. In the letter, he expressed his heartfelt thanks to Emma and the shelter for giving him a new chance at happiness. The pictures showed the old man and the puppy together, enjoying walks in the park, playing in the yard, and snuggling on the couch. The puppy looked healthy and happy, and the old man’s eyes sparkled with joy and contentment. Emma smiled as she read the letter and looked at the pictures, knowing that she had made a real difference in someone’s life. She felt a sense of fulfillment and happiness, knowing that love and compassion could truly make a world of difference.

【答案】
“What will we do?” Hildy cried. “The barn can’t hold so many sheep.” They had to drive twelve of them into the barn, and five in the garage. As for the other six, there was no other choice but to drive them into the kitchen. The next morning, wakened up by Humphrey’s angry cries, Hildy rushed to the kitchen. What a mess! A lamb was lying beside the fireplace, chewing a corner of Humphrey’s newspaper, and another black-faced sheep had just knocked down the plates and bowls from the breakfast table.
Outside the messy kitchen, Hildy had a good idea, eyes falling on the blankets. “If we give them back their wool, they can go outside.” Humphrey followed her gaze, “Hildy, how could we keep those blankets on the sheep? They’d fall off in the strong wind!” Hildy tapped her chin thoughtfully: “Maybe we can.” Grabbing a blanket from the nearest pile, she began unraveling the blankets and then was busy knitting for their sheep.(OR: She began to sew buttons onto one side of the blankets and buttonholes made of strings on the other.)Finally, twenty-three warm “wool sweaters” were on their sheep, protecting them from the cold as they played outside.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
With the tent finally ready, we got in and reached for the backpack.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
As we began to lay out our tent, the first drops of rain fell. The ground quickly turned muddy, making it hard to keep our balance as we worked with the tent. I struggled to insert the tent poles into the ground while Lily pulled the tent up. Water splashed around our feet and our coats got wet. With great efforts, we straightened it out, “This isn’t how I imagined our camping trip going,” I joked. We couldn’t help laughing at how silly we looked. With each tug and zip, the tent took shape
With the tent finally ready, we got in and reached for the backpack. We pulled out our diary, and began to read through the entries we had written during our time apart. Each story transported us back to our precious moments: the adventures we went through together and the challenges we faced on our own. Each story drew reminding us of our shared histories and dreams. As we added a new entry about the unforgettable camping tour that day, I realized how much stronger our friendship had become despite long distances.

Lily and Amy looked at each other and understood. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Knowing about the quarrel, Ms. Thompson pulled them together. She first encouraged the girls to express their thoughts openly. Lily insisted on her performance style, pointing that the stage demands big expressions, while Amy argued that being real makes it more touching. Ms. Thompson then said, “Girls, a great performance is like a symphony. Both of you are like different music instruments having your own characteristics. Alone, it’s good; but together, you create harmony.”
Lily and Amy looked at each other and understood. Lily approached Amy. “I was wrong to judge you,” she admitted, her voice soft but sincere. “Your calmness is part of what makes the story beautiful.” Amy smiled, her eyes bright. “And your passion inspires me to give my best. Let’s work together, like we used to.” From that day on, they practiced with a newfound understanding, blending their strengths to create a performance that moved everyone who watched it. On New Year’s Eve, their play was a resounding success, not just because of their talent, but because they reminded everyone of the true meaning of friendship.

I don’t know how you are doing, but you seem to be wearing out.”

【答案】
I was hesitant at first, but I decided to give it a try. Accompanied by Cindy, I spent the weekend working as a volunteer there. We organized games to interact with the left-behind children and the experience was heart-warming when I saw their initial shyness gradually transformed into smiles and laughter. We also helped clean the rooms of elderly people in a nursing house, chatted with them, and listened to their stories. The atmosphere was filled with laughter and love. For the first time in months, I forgot about work and gained a sense of authentic pleasure in life.
After that memorable day, I decided to make a change to my life. I still work hard on my business, but I also reserve time for those simple pleasures. I sign up for volunteer activities, finding joy in the smiles of those less fortunate. I have heart-to-heart conversations with my family over delicious home-cooked meals and visit bookstores where I lose myself in the wisdom of written words. With this new routine, my health gradually improves and I rediscover the path to true well-being. I am ready to embrace a new chapter, one that includes both ambition and the joy of living.

【答案】
“Help!” I shouted with all my strength. When I woke up, I found myself lying in bed and my leg hurt. Suddenly I saw Apple. It looked at me with excited eyes and licked my hand with its tongue, as if it were glad I woke up. It was lying beside my bed excitedly, and I stroked his head gently. “You finally woke up.” Wendy smiled at me.
Later, Windy told me that when she got home from work, Apple was waiting for her. “Apple, why are you here alone? Where is your master?” Wendy asked with concern. At the sight of Wendy, Apple kept barking anxiously around the circle and looked at the direction of the valley. Wendy realized that there seemed to be some danger, and she hurried out to catch up with Apple. “After a long time walk, Apple brought me to you! Thank God you are still alive!” After listening to Wendy, I looked back at Apple. I was glad to own such a brave and loyal dog!

Passage 3
(23-24高一上·江苏常州·期末)
The New York Marathon is my goal for this year. I know I am never going to win a race but now, when I get anything negative, I will think of the kind gentleman who really believed, “You are very good… you very fast.”
I had always said, “Good morning,” and he had always smiled warmly and nodded slightly.

【答案】
My mother’s statement remained in my mind like a giant blanket. Gradually, my jog slowed to a walk. My body drained of energy and my mind felt extremely defeated. Just as I was going to turn around and head for home — feeling more discouraged than I could recall in years — I saw that elderly Chinese gentleman again. Seeing my shirt in the distance had prompted him to march towards me. With limited English he pointed to the letters and enthusiastically said, “You are very good… you very fast.”
Upon hearing the man’s words, I felt more unexplained strength in my step. He cast his usual warm smile at me and gave me a thumb up as we passed each other. A surge of warmth across my whole body, I didn’t turn from the trail where my previous dark mood had intended. Thanks to that little boost, I continued for six more miles that day instead. I was not that fast, but was very good in my spirit and my heart. Luckily, the elderly gentleman saved me from the shadow of negative feedback.

【答案】
I nodded and said, “Sure. But I’m unable to make it.” Alan looked at me and said he would help me. From that day on, Alan continued picking me up from school, and we drove to the stables to ride. I distanced myself from the bad kids, and I thought of strategies for running races faster. Through hard work, Colonel and I had lit upon a new rhythm and we rode hard and fast, the way I’d always watched Alan ride. Finally, the big day came. At first, I made mistake after mistake, but gradually my horse ran faster and faster.
Finally, Colonel and I crossed the finish line in third place. Alan and my mother clapped happily. Soon came the moment of the awards ceremony. When the judge handed the trophy to me, I shed tears with excitement, and Alan gave me a thumbs-up. Back home, I placed the trophy on my dresser. In the following years, I got different trophies. It was my brother who taught me how to ride and how to live. Thanks to him, I became a better person.

【答案】
Just as the students got on the bus after school, a girl handed me a note. I didn’t open it until they all left. It was a lovely drawing full of childlike wonder and a note that said, “You are the best teacher that I have ever had!” My mouth fell open in shock. It really amazed me that I had touched that girl’s heart so deeply. I took that note home and put it in a book. Every time I felt down or discouraged, I would take it out and look at it. It always made me smile.
Many years later, when I was a schoolmaster, a young woman came in for a job. She seemed very surprised to see me, saying excitedly, “It’s you! My dear teacher!” I looked at her, not recognizing her. I was surprised when she reminded me of the little girl who handed me a note many years ago. We talked a lot about the encouragement we received from each other. The next day, she came to my school to teach. How small actions can make a difference to others!

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
It was my dad!
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
As I took a breath to try a dive, a huge wave swallowed me. I choked and then a huge undercurrent swept me deeper beneath the waves. The very thought of dying filled me with a mad panic. I kicked my legs wildly, losing any hope for a breath. I remember trying to stand up, but the sandy bottom had disappeared. As I came up searching for the surface, struggling for oxygen, sputtering to clear my lungs, I felt a firm grasp on my arm and a pull to safety.
It was my dad! He hugged me tightly and carried me back to a place where I could stand. There was no scolding, just a big hug and smile because he knew I was all right. He had been watching me all along! He had never taken his eye off me, even as he had the other eye on my sister. He had protected me. Being told by someone that you are loved is great, but experiencing that love is awesome. Without his watching over me, without his loving me, I would not be the strong woman I am today.

As the mother herself dusted the vase every day, she naturally noticed the cracks (裂纹) that day.

【答案】
The mother said, “This chocolate is a reward for your imagination: a window-opening cat!” Ben’s face turned red as he stared at the chocolate in his hand. His mother gently touched his head and continued, “You glued the vase carefully, which shows you truly cared about making things right.” She paused, her eyes warm and understanding. “But imagination should help us solve problems, not hide from them.” Ben bit his lip, realizing his mother had known the truth all along.
Now with some chocolates in hand, the boy’s bad attitude disappeared. He took a deep breath and whispered, “Mom, I’m sorry. I broke the vase while playing basketball and lied to you.” His mother smiled softly, “I’m proud of you for telling the truth. Mistakes happen, but honesty is more precious than any antique.” She handed him another chocolate, “Let’s fix it together tomorrow, okay?” Ben nodded, holding the chocolate tightly, grateful for his mother’s wisdom and love.

【答案】
Jordan joked about the colour being beautiful and laughed. Devin smiled back, feeling embarrassed. The game soon started. Devin quickly forgot the pink glove and focused on the game. He fielded every ball that came his way. Devin’s determination, teamwork skills and outstanding capabilities convinced everyone that he was an excellent athlete. His teammates also performed very well. After much hard work they finally won. They were all very delighted. “We have to admit that pink glove is really amazing,” Jordan said. Devin smiled again, proud and confident.
The game was over, and Devin met his parents outside the field. “You won the game with the pink glove,” Mom said with a smile. Devin’s face went red and they laughed. Dad said he could take a ride down to Silvio’s the next day so Devin would have his own glove for the next game. “Or Uncle Gabe can drop it off when he comes up this way next week,” Dad added. “Next weel is OK,” Devin said. “Before that, I can still use Mom’s amazing pink glove!”

Passage 1
(23-24高一上·江苏南通·期末)
Engagement (订婚) is an exciting and memorable event that many people look forward to.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
However, Bailey refused to give up hope. She started by contacting the rest stop management, hoping that someone might have found her ring and turned it in. She also posted about her lost ring on social media. The response was surprising with people sharing her post and offering words of encouragement. Days turned into weeks, and Bailey continued her search. She contacted local jewelry stores and even called the police. Despite her efforts, the ring remained hard to find, and Bailey began to feel hopeless.
Just when she’s about to lose heart, something amazing happened. She received a call from the rest stop management. A kind-hearted employee had found her ring but didn’t know where to turn it in. Bailey couldn’t believe her luck and rushed back to the rest stop. As she held the ring in her hand once again, Bailey was overwhelmed with gratitude and relief. She realized that material possessions can come and go, but the love and memories she shares with her partner are irreplaceable. The experience has taught her the importance of cherishing and valuing what truly matters in life.

【答案】
Fast forward to the Christmas morning. I sprang out of bed as soon as I woke up and rushed downstairs to find my sisters already there. Overwhelmed by excitement and expectation, I couldn’t wait to open my present. The whole living room was filled with happiness. But what I was most curious about was the gift specifically for Mom and Dad. When Mom unwrapped the delicate package carefully, we were greeted by a $100 and a note saying “Just take it as a Christmas gift.”
Immediately, Mom’s eyes teared up as she looked hopefully at my dad. I knew he was caught in a dilemma. On one hand, Dad was a proud man who was unwilling to accept financial help. On the other hand, we really needed the money to help us pull through. So after hesitating for a while, he nodded his head, as if to say “It’s OK. You can keep it.” Mom bought some necessities with the money, including delicious food and invited Grandma Margaret to join us for dinner. We chatted a lot at the dinner table, and it was the happiest Christmas in my memory.

【答案】
The next day, I called Tom to my office. The boy admitted that he was the thief and asked for my forgiveness. I asked him the reason. He said Mary’s mother was in hospital and Mary’s family didn’t have enough money to pay for the treatment. I said in earnest: “Tom, I’m quite touched by your golden heart, but taking money without permission is not a proper way to solve the problem.” Tom lowered his head in shame. “Come on! Let’s visit Mary’s mother and see what we can do for her.”
We went to the hospital and saw Mary’s mother. Mary’s mother was surprised to see us, but soon she collected herself and showed her great gratitude for us visiting her. Thinking of sensible Mary and kind-hearted Tom, I chose not to tell her the incident, comforted her and left the 1000 pesos and some more for her. On our way back, Tom hugged me tightly, tears in his eyes. Later Tom became a better person. Under proper guidance, a boy with a warm heart can shine more brightly.

The car causing the traffic trouble was damaged too, but it fled away.
Drew said that he just couldn’t imagine if he was in that position and no one stopped for him. Mike said that it was a miracle that she survived the accident. Before the emergency service arrived, she was moved out of the car.
Tears were flowing down Pamela’s cheeks after she was saved. She said that Mike and his son were her angels on the earth, and that she was forever grateful to them. She couldn’t stop her tears from flowing out of joy. She was so touched and thankful that Mike and his son cared enough to stop to help. She said that she usually received “thank you” from the people she helped, but now it’s time for her to say “thank you” to those who helped her.
