Passage 1
(24-25高二上·临化中学·期末)
On the first morning of second grade, Jared remembered five things he didn’t like about school: Jessica, lining up, maths, spelling, and reading aloud. Jared wanted to stay home, but his mom sent him anyway. He had to sit next to Jessica.
At reading time, Mrs. Thomas asked Jared to read. Reading aloud always made Jared nervous. As he picked up the book, his hands shook. Words were not clear. “He can’t read,” Jessica said. “I didn’t call on you, did I?” asked Mrs. Thomas. “No, but I’ll read.” Jared made a face. They were asked to stay outside the classroom for a time-out (暂停). During the period, Jessica whispered to him, “When Mom brings my kittens (小猫) to school, don’t even think about touching them.”
The four kittens arrived in a box covered with a piece of screen. Everyone except Jared held them. Jared had nothing to do but practice spelling. When he sharpened his pencil, he looked into the tiny box. “Don’t want to touch my kittens!” Jessica shouted. “Stupid kittens,” Jared said. After the second class, almost the whole class wanted to play with the kittens. Then Philip said, “Hey, where are the kittens?” The box was empty. “Oh no!” Jessica said, “Jared, did you take them?” Jared shook his head, thinking they must have pushed up the lid (盖子). “He said they were stupid,” Jessica told Mrs. Thomas. “I didn’t mean it.” Jared’s face turned red.
“Look at the radiator (散热器)!” Philip said. A Tiny gray face rose from under the radiator cover. “Kitty, kitty,” Mrs. Thomas said. The face disappeared. “If we ignore them, maybe they’ll come out. At least the heat isn’t on.” Instead of practicing spelling, Jared watched the radiator. Soon, two faces and a tiny head appeared. Alex yelled, “Kitten!” The kitten was out of sight again. Jessica cried.

Passage 2
(23-24高二上·皖中联盟·期末)
After his wife died, Ramu was left alone in this world. He was sixty-five years old. As time went by, Ramu’s sadness increased. The more he thought, the stronger his belief became that it was useless to live in this world anymore.
One morning, he went out for a walk and didn’t return to his home. His steps took him out of the city and there he saw a bus. He took that bus. After a few hours, the bus was passing through a thick forest and stopped there for a break.
Ramu stepped out of the bus and headed in a direction. After a while, he heard a voice from the bus calling for passengers to return, but he decided not to return. He wanted to get lost in the thick forest.
In the thick forest, even during the day, there was slight darkness. Ramu was walking as if he was not conscious (有知觉的). While walking, he went towards the side of a mountain. His steps suddenly stopped at a place where the mountain opened towards a valley below. There, he saw the path was blocked by two sticks and a sign written in big letters—DANGER.
He couldn’t understand who would write this in such a thick forest. While looking around, Ramu walked a little further towards the valley, seeing a deep ditch (壕沟) ahead. At that moment, his heart trembled (颤抖). He sat aside, thinking how a moment ago he wanted to die, but now he was scared.
With a calmed mind, he started wandering, looking for the person who did this. While wandering, he saw many signs. He saw the DANGER/ BEWARE sign at many dangerous places and the POISONOUS FRUITS sign was written on many trees.
He realized that if those signs were not put up, anyone could have fallen into one of those deep ditches and lost his life. Seeing all this, Ramu called out loudly, “Brother, who saved my life? I want to see you.”
Just then, from behind the leaves, an old man appeared, laughing and said, “I have been watching you for a long time. Tell me how you came here?”

Passage 3
(24-25高二上·安徽合肥·期末)
When I was six years old, an interesting thing happened. My father happened to hear about some skating classes in our local community and he seemed to strongly believe that I was going to be good at skating. So he filled out the form and got me signed up for it.
I was extremely excited because it sounded like a lot of fun to learn how to skate. But at the same time, I was also a little frightened. After all, it was something completely new to me. Fortunately, my family were always there to support me. They kept telling me that I could do it.
The first skating class was set to start at 7:00 am. I was really looking forward to it. My father and I were able to make it to the class on time. When we arrived at the skating rink (冰场), I was shocked: Even though it was the very first class, some of the students were already skating like real experts! They were gliding (滑行) around the rink so smoothly. When it was time to get the skating shoes, all the ones that fit me were already taken. The instructor had to give me a pair that didn’t fit well at all. They were too big and felt really uncomfortable on my feet.
My father and the instructor could see that I was a bit down. They kept telling me not to worry and that everyone starts from the beginning. With their encouragement, I decided to give it a try. But it was really hard. Every time I tried to skate, I would fall down. It was so embarrassing. However, the instructor was really nice. He would hold my hand and walk with me around the rink, teaching me the basic steps and how to balance.
After that first class, when I returned home, I couldn’t stop thinking about skating. I kept wondering how I could improve and become an expert like those other students.

Passage 4
(24-25高二上·安徽阜阳·期末)
Every year, our swim team runs the Snack Bar at the pool ground to raise funds for covering the costs of swim competitions and equipment. However, during our first summer meeting last month, Coach Abby informed us that the Snack Bar would be closed for repairs until August.
Upon hearing the news, all the team members were worried that without a Snack Bar, we wouldn’t have funds, which meant, our swim team might have to be dismissed.
Supposing the worst, everyone was out of spirit. “Take it easy! I’ll figure it out. For now, boys, jump into the pool and get swimming!” said Coach Abby, gently comforting us. But none of us were swimming our best, and even though Coach Abby was smiling as usual, it was evident that she was concerned about the situation.
During the break, I proposed exploring alternative approaches for holding a fundraising event. My teammates erupted into a lively conversation. D.J. suggested a karaoke sing-along, while Tamara offered to bring starfish cookies for sale. Manny brought up the idea of games and prizes, while I thought we could run a drink stand.
After a heated discussion, it was decided that each of us would take turns to host the event throughout the week. Coach Abby heartily approved of our plan. My drink stand was scheduled for the last day of the event.
I was so thrilled about the upcoming event that I began my preparations a day ahead. When I was making the drinks, I noticed a very dark cloud outside the kitchen window. “Uh-oh! That’s not a rain cloud, is it?” I asked my mom, feeling a bit anxious. “Rain would be a disaster! It could ruin everything.”
“You know what they say,” she answered. “Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.”
Then came the big day. Coach Abby helped me set up the drink stand and the teammates called out loudly to get everyone together at the pool ground. I hid a big box under the table and nobody knew what was inside. Everything was going smoothly as we wished.

Passage 5
(23-24高二上·淮北第一中学·期末)
Fifteen Dollars From a Strange Woman
“Wake up. Mama!” I felt a little hand on my face and opened my eyes. There was my son, ready to start the day. I also heard my baby and toddler(学步的儿童)awake in the next room. Ready or not, the day had begun!
I loved being at home with my little ones, but I felt the weight of the world on my shoulders. My husband and I had just bought a house, and some unexpected expenses made our budget (预算)tighter than it had ever been.
I got out of bed and pulled on my faded jeans and sneakers that had seen better days. I only had one task on the to-do list for the day. I was going to pick up my kids’ photos from the studio at the local mall. Despite our small budget, it was important for me to have pictures of my children as they were growing up. Since we were going to the mall, I decided to make it an outing and packed some sandwiches for us to eat at the food court.
After breakfast, I put everyone into the car, and off we went. After we parked, I unfolded the double stroller (婴儿车), put in the youngest two kids and asked the oldest to hold onto the stroller.
We wheeled into the studio at the mall, and I approached the counter. The young woman smiled. “May I help you?”
“Yes, I’m here to pick up our photos,” I answered.
The woman asked my name and opened her large drawer. “Schmoyer... Schmoyer... Ah, yes, here they are. Aren’t they just so adorable?” She fanned out the photos and the smiling faces of my kids warmed my heart.
“Yes, they are great. Thank you,” I said.
She put the photos into an envelope for me. Then she spread out additional photos of my kids that I hadn’t ordered. I knew what that meant.
“Would you like to purchase these extra photos? They are only fifteen dollars a piece!” she smiled sweetly.

Passage 6
(24-25高二上·安徽宣城·期末)
Sunlight flooded across the sports field, illuminating every corner with its warm and vibrant rays, and the noise was deafening. As I walked towards the track, I glanced around me at the sea of faces in the stands, but my mind was focused. The gold medal for girl’s 1km race was just minutes away, hanging in the distance.
My classmates were cheering so loudly that it seemed as if they were the only fans there. I could hear my name being called. I could hear the shouts of encouragement and the cries of hope. I had working hard towards this race for two years after recovering from an operation. For the long and hard days of training, my classmates offered support, encouragement and assistance to me, which all had led up to this championship. My coach helped me make a good plan for this race. I knew I would have to push myself beyond my known limits to ensure that I would win the gold medal.
The starting gun was fired, and the race began. My rivals (竞争对手) had set the pace from the start. It was important that I didn’t let anyone get too far in front. The first lap was good, I managed to keep up with the group, but I was feeling much more tired than I usually did and much more than I’ d anticipated. My ankle was bandaged against an injury I had incurred in the long jump just a couple of days earlier. Mental and physical tiredness were starting to crush me, but I had to fight back and tried to shut out all thoughts of pain.
Two girls ran past me. I knew I couldn’t let them get too far. At least I had to stay with them. I reminded myself, “Just get to that finish line. Keep running, head held high.” Out of nowhere, the pain from the ankle injury was starting to spread all over my body. My heart was beating loudly and my mouth was dry.

Passage 1
(23-24高二上·安徽五市联考·期末)
I can count a dozen friends, all in the 1950s, who adopted a puppy. Actually, I did, too. Last year, I was suddenly consumed by the urgent desire to acquire a seven-week-old Australian shepherd. For one thing, this breed is one of the most energetic on the planet, whereas I am bookish, lazy, and middle-aged.
My trouble with dogs is that I never have the remotest clue what they want, and they never seem to have the slightest idea of what I’m saying to them. He was highly alert, yet unable to grasp a single thing. Kevin’s entire communicative gestures — whether he wanted food, exercise, permission to jump on the sofa, a toy, or, who knows, a conversation about the electric bill — consisted of walking up to me and staring. He did this about 50 times a day, just staring brightly without moving a muscle, and after years of living together, I still didn’t know what he wanted. We coexisted in a state of profound mutual (相互的) incomprehension.
“Sometimes I think,” I wrote in my journal, “it doesn’t matter that I don’t know what he wants, because we have nothing in common. Whatever he wants will be something I don’t want. He probably wants me to go outside and chase squirrels. I don’t want to.”
But one afternoon, there was only Kevin and I at home. My husband was on business abroad for several days and my son was also abroad attending college. I enjoyed my favorite book leisurely while Kevin had a rest or stared at me as usual. It suddenly began to thunder aloud and soon rained cats and dogs. I dashed out of the front-door to fetch the vegetables in my parking lot. The wind was so strong that the front-door just slammed loudly, closed, after I made my way out. Worse still, when I came back with the rescued vegetables, I found the keys were not with me. There was also no backup (备份) of the keys outside my house.

Passage 2
(24-25高二上·安徽亳州·期末)
I know he has arrived before I ever see him. Heads turn in his direction, and if he stops for just a minute, he draws a crowd. He walks through the halls in a way that shows he is truly confident.
His name is Augie. He is a six-year-old Goldendoodle with a strawberry-blond coat that is made for petting, and his manners are perfect. He is a trained therapy (治疗) dog that visits patients in the hospital where I work as a nurse. I have seen Augie come through the hospital, stopping for anyone who wants to pet him, and I have seen him go into patients’ rooms. But I had never witnessed Augie providing the therapy that he was trained to give until I saw him with Mr. M.
Mr. M had been in ICU for many weeks and suffered from many medical complications. His wife rarely left his side. Family and former co-workers visited. Prior to his retirement, Mr. M had worked as a canine (犬的) police officer and developed strong connections with his four-legged partners. It was a natural transition when, upon retiring from the police force, he became a trainer for the next generation of fearless police dogs. Sadly, he fell ill when attending a training program for police dogs.
Although he was awake, and his beautiful green eyes were open, there was little indication that he was aware of his surroundings. Mrs. M was untroubled by the lack of response and kept talking to him while she exercised his arms, hoping he would make some effort to move them himself. I watched Mrs. M work with her husband’s hands, opening and closing them. She told him gently that he needed to move his hands so he would not lose the use of them, but he did not seem to be able to do it. He moved his eyes to look at her when she spoke to him, but he didn’t move his head toward her voice.

Passage 1
(23-24高二上·安徽马鞍山·期末)
Sometimes, making a decision is hard for adults while easy for kids. The Jackson family had been meaning to buy some new furniture (家具) for ages, but somehow they never got round to it. There were always so many other things to do. Then one day there was a big shout from the room of Jason, 12. The rest of the family ran to see what happened.
Jason’s desk had broken. There were bits of wood and pens and papers all over the floor. And in the middle was Jason! “I was just doing my homework.” he said, “and then -bang! The desk broke. Everything fell over. I was so surprised that I fell over too!” Laughed Jane, 5. “That decides it.” said Mum. “We need to buy some new furniture before anything else breaks. Jane needs a new bed. And Jason needs a desk, so that he can do his homework. ”
So that weekend, the family got up early, and set off for the big furniture store outside town. It was huge. There was so much furniture, some of it was arranged like in a real house.
“Look, I’m playing houses (过家家),” said Jane, crawling ( 爬 ) under a table. Jane loved playing houses. “That’s enough,” Mum said, taking tight hold of Jane’s hand. Jane didn’t like it, but she had to stay close. The family chose a new bed for Jane, who was bored now, and tired. She didn’t say much, while the rest of the family discussed which desk to get. Jason had found one he liked but Mum and Dad couldn’t agree.
“It’s too big.” said Mum. “There’s not enough space in his room.”
“It’s too small,” said Dad. “There’s not enough space for his homework. ”
“I think it’s just right!” said Jason.
“Let’s get a cup of tea while we try and decide,” said Mum.“There’s a cafe in the store.” Dad thought this was a good idea. He needed a sit down, he said, and Jason really wanted a milkshake (奶昔). “What do you think, Jane?” asked Mum. Then she looked round. “Where is she? I think she’s jumping on the sofa!”
But there was no sign of Jane on the sofa. Then Jason wondered if she could be lying on her new bed!

Passage 2
(23-24高二上·安徽宣城·期末)
Finding happiness in life
When John walked into the dining room in the morning, his wife Jenny and his two children, Kevin and Sophie, were sitting at the table. The atmosphere was frosty as John sat down. Sophie, who was only five years old, gave her father a weak smile. Kevin, his teenage son, didn’t look up from his food. Jenny looked at him silently with her arms folded across her chest.
“OK,” John began, “I’m sorry. I know I let everyone down yesterday.”
Kevin looked accusingly at his father. “You missed my music performance at school again! You’ve never come to see me do anything,” he said angrily.
Jenny placed a hand on John’s shoulder. “That’s true! John, you always miss family activities. The last time we had a family outing was five months ago! And I’m exhausted from all the housework.”
As he drank his coffee, John reflected on his life. He had so much to be thankful for: a successful business, a harmonious family and a lovely home. In fact, he had everything he had ever wanted, but he knew something was wrong. He had always believed that with hard work, he could make his family happy. But he realized he was failing. He was spending more time at work and less time at home. He was working in the office until late in the evening and even during weekends. When at home, he was talking on the phone with his clients or sitting in front of the computer reading or writing emails. He was neglecting his family. He hadn’t taken his wife to a nice restaurant for months. Kevin was passionate about music, but John couldn’t remember the last time he saw Kevin perform at a school concert. Sophie was growing up so fast and John had even missed her last birthday party. John realized he had become an absent husband and an absent father.

Passage 1
(23-24高二上·阜阳三中·期末)
It all started with a simple question: “Can I paint your portrait?”
In the summer of 2015, Peterson and his wife, Vanessa, had just moved to Santa Ana, California. Outside the couple’s fourth-floor apartment, a homeless man was often yelling on the street corner, sometimes keeping them awake at night. Peterson, 28. would pass the guy on his way to his job, but they never spoke . What could they possibly have in common?
One day, Peterson was relaxing in his living room, reading a book, when his quiet was disturbed by the homeless man. Inspired by the book’s compassionate message, Peterson made an unexpected decision: He was going to go outside and introduce himself.
In that first conversation, Peterson learned the man’signs name was Faris. He’d moved to California to pursue a career in music, but he soon fell on hard times and ended up living on the street for more than a decade.
“It was the weirdest thing to me,” Peterson recalled later. “I saw beauty on the face of a man who hadn’t shaved in probably a year, had overgrown finger nails, probably hadn’t had a shower in close to a year. But his story, the life inside of him, inspired me.”And even though Peterson, a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Art, hadn’t picked up a paintbrush in about eight years, he found himself asking if he could paint Faris’s portrait. Faris said yes.
Peterson’s connection with Faris led him to form Faces In the Community(FIC), a nonprofit organization focused on befriending and painting portraits of members of the community who are unhoused. Peterson sells the portraits signed by both subject and artist for a few thousand dollars, splitting the proceeds(收入) and putting half into what he calls a”love account”for his model. He then helps people use the money to get back on their feet. Of course, Faris was the first to benefit from FIC.

Tom was a skilled teenage surfer. He had always been attracted by the ocean and the challenge of riding its waves. He had trained tirelessly for years, sharpening his skills and perfecting his technique. He had participated in many competitions and won several titles. But one day, his world was turned upside down.
It was a routine training day. While Tom was concentrating on his training in the sea, a shark came in through the broken shark-proof net and approached him. The animal knocked over Tom’s surfboard and bit his right leg, tearing through his flesh (肉体) and causing massive damage. Despite the seriousness of his injuries, Tom was lucky to survive the attack. He was rushed to the hospital, where he received an emergency operation. With the efforts of doctors, his leg was saved.
Tom’s recovery was long and painful, but he refused to give up on his dream of surfing. At first, his progress was slow. He had to learn to walk again, and then to run, and then to jump. Every movement was a struggle. But with the help of his family and friends, as well as his own fierce determination, Tom gradually began to make progress. He spent hours every day in the gym, doing strength and balance exercises to rebuild his body.

Passage 3
(23-24高二上·合肥六校联盟·期末)
ALICE IN WONDERLAND is my favorite story of all time. And acting is my number one passion. At my old school, Poulsbo Elementary, I’d starred in every play from third grade on. Before that, gymnastics was my thing. But then I played my first role as Tinkerbell in Peter Pan. And after that, backflips just couldn’t compare.
So, when my teacher announced during my first week at Newland Elementary that we’d be performing Alice in Wonderland for the school play, I practically squealed out loud with excitement. I’d always wanted to play the role of Alice!
However, a week later, Mrs. Pearson announced, “The role of Alice goes to Denise Taylor!” My head buzzed. My stomach churned. But I clapped along with everyone else and pasted a fake smile on my face. It took Mrs. Pearson forever to get to my name. When she finally did, she read, “Hazel, Tyler, and Ella — hedgehogs!” She announced this as if we’d just won a million dollars. But the hedgehogs had no lines! They just got batted around with croquet mallets (槌球棒) and then disappeared forever.
Mrs. Pearson called the hedgehogs up after class. “Hedgehogs,” she said, “your roles are going to be a lot of fun! You might also consider helping out with our costumes! Go to the school storage room and get creative!” Mrs. Pearson looked at us expectantly. I snuck a glance at the other two. Ella looked as if she were about to cry. Tyler looked as if he’d just eaten a piece of moldy cheese.
The next day, we went to school storage room, while we were picking up the costumes, Ella had one hand against the wall and appeared to be doing ballet warmups. “I really wanted to be the Queen of Hearts,” she said, raising her left leg so that it was almost parallel to her body. I remembered hearing that she danced the Nutcracker every year. “Yeah, well I wanted to be the Cheshire Cat,” said Tyler, as he pulled a fake gold crown out of the costume trunk. Then he did this cool backward turn, where he ended up bowing in front of us as he took the crown off and held it to his chest. Both of these guys seemed like really good dancers.

Passage 4
(23-24高二上·马鞍山二中·期末)
As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into groups. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. I found it hard to fit in.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. She wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a glass; then we each closed our eyes and catch one piece of paper from the glass on which was the name of a classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support each other over the next five school days. By the middle of the week, everyone, including me, had turned this assignment into a competition to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. We left cards, pens and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friend except me.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed there was a package. I opened the wrapping paper and inside was a box of powder (胭脂). The girls sitting near me laughed at the gift I had received. To make matters worse, the powder had already been opened.
I tried to forget about the embarrassing gift, but when I was in the bathroom during the break, the girls who had seen me open the powder started speaking ill of my secret friend. I quickly joined in: “How terrible”. I heard myself saying “What could my friend be thinking by giving me such a stupid gift? My grandmother wouldn’t even want it.” The girls laughed at my remarks and rushed out of the bathroom. I stayed to wash my hands and let the water run through my fingers as I thought about what I had just said. It wasn’t normal like me to say mean things like that about someone.

Passage 1
(23-24高二上·滁州中学·期末)
Martin was returning home after a difficult shift (轮班) on a dark snowy night. He worked as a truck driver in Los Angeles, taking several shifts a week because he had a sick daughter, Anne, who needed urgent surgery, but he wasn’t sure if he’d be able to raise enough money for it.
Anne was diagnosed with a cyst (囊肿) shortly after birth. The doctors told Martin and his wife Helen that she needed an operation as soon as possible, otherwise, it could pose a threat to the little girl’s life. The parents decided they should do whatever it took to save their daughter and began saving money right away.
It was too black outside with no visibility (能见度). Martin was driving slowly, thinking of solutions to his problem when he noticed a shadow in the middle of the road. He hit the brakes and the truck came to a complete stop. Rubbing his eyes, Martin looked more closely. A human figure — a woman lying unconscious in the middle of the road!
Martin picked up the woman, carried her to his truck, quickly changed his route and drove straight to the hospital. About 10 minutes later, they finally arrived at the hospital. “It’s an emergency! Please call the doctor!” he screamed at the top of his lungs. The woman was admitted to hospital at once.
The next day, Martin went to the hospital to see the woman. The woman was Daisy, who was a rich businesswoman. Daisy expressed her gratitude to him and told him the whole story about how she ended up on the road. “Thank you so much, Martin. You’re a really generous soul. I heard you drove me to the hospital last night and that you have been here a few times with your daughter.”

Passage 1
(23-24高二上·安庆示范高中·期末)
It was a sunny summer morning, the breeze blowing gently. As planned, Jackson took a trip into the remote wilds near Olom Village, in the Sakha Republic, Russia. His four-year-old daughter, Karina, found him leaving and wanted to follow him to give her dad a surprise. She slipped out of the house, with nobody realizing it, even Jackson.
Unfortunately, she walked too slowly on her way and soon she was lost in the vast, dangerous Siberian wilderness. Luckily for her, her dog, Naida, followed Karina just as the girl followed her father. The two suddenly found themselves walking with no one in sight, drifting away from their home as the hours went by.
Night fell. Karina’s father returned home, and it didn’t take long after that for the whole family to realize what had happened. They couldn’t find Karina anywhere. They turned to the police for help immediately. And they took action at once in search of the lost girl.
A whole week had gone by and there was no progress of the rescue in sight. The whole family was stuck in desperation, but Karina’s mum never lost hope. “Many stopped believing that she was alive, but as a mother I felt that she would be found soon.”
In fact, Karina did survive. Although Siberia is an extremely dangerous place even for otherwise fit adults due to its wildlife and climate, she made it. She survived by eating wild fruits and drinking water from nearby rivers, and she faced the freezing nighttime temperatures by cozying up in a bed of grass. Naida did its best too, scaring away the wild animals and keeping each other warm by sleeping close together at night.
After nine days struggling to survive, scared and alone, Karina could only be grateful about one thing: her good friend was by her side. Naida gave its strength, and actively helped the four-year-old to stay alive for that long.
This morning, Naida suddenly walked away and headed back into town, ignoring Karina’s hopeless cry and leaving her completely alone.

Naida did what it could to lead the rescue team to where Karina was.

Passage 2
(23-24高二上·合肥一中·期末)
A Four-legged Guardian Angel
Snow had just melted off the ground that April day at our house in Regina Beach. I had just cleaned up the pool in preparation for selling the house. The year before, I had lost my job, and now our financial situation was depressing. Finally, I had put the home on the market. Even worse, I would have to give up my beloved Great Dane (大丹犬), Brigitte, because I could no longer afford the cost of feeding it. The thought of losing the dog and our beautiful home was almost more than I could bear.
Deep in discouragement, I sat typing up my application letters. Out of the corner of my eye I could see my thirteen-month-old son, Forrest, as he lay on the carpet, playing near our big, gentle Brigitte. It seemed as if Brigitte was always meant to be in this family and she turned out to be a perfect companion.
Brigitte came to our house on Christmas eve when the doorbell rang and I was sure some of my Christmas packages had arrived. I ran to the door but no one was there. I sensed something and looked down, only to find a beautiful Great Dane sitting there, looking up at me with big, intelligent eyes. Perhaps, someone had found the puppy somewhere and left her there, and then rang the doorbell and ran away. They accurately guessed I would welcome an additional family member and take care of her.
Thinking of these, I couldn’t help sighing and went straight back to work. However, I hadn’t typed more than two sentences when Brigitte began barking and running back and forth to the sliding glass door overlooking our pool.
I raced to see what was happening and noticed that the sliding door was slightly open. Suddenly, I realized Forrest was nowhere to be seen. In panic, I opened the door and ran outside.

【答案】Jared decided to help the kittens out, so he stood up from his desk. When Jared passed the empty box, he saw kitten food. He had an idea. “Mrs. Thomas, may I have a try? I can get the kittens out,” he said. “How, Jared?” Jared took the kitten food to the radiator, “Hungry, guys?” he whispered. He sat on the floor and spread the food beside him. A kitten came out. Jared waited until it was eating. Then another kitten appeared.
Jared lifted them into the box with Jessica watching with joy. Jared spread more treats. Soon, the other kittens were coming out, and Jared gently put them in the box. “Class, Jared saved the kittens.” Mrs. Thomas announced with a big smile. Everyone cheered. “Thanks,” whispered Jessica. “You’re the greatest.” Jared was so pleased that when he read, his hands didn’t shake. Words also became clearer. That day, Jared decided second grade might not be so bad.

【答案】One possible version:
After telling the old man his story, Ramu asked, “What are you doing here?” The old man replied that many years ago, while passing through this forest, his only son fell into a deep ditch hidden under grass and lost his life. Suddenly, the old man’s world went blank. Then he thought there must be more such dangerous places in this forest. So he decided to live here to help others. He wrote warnings at many dangerous places. This forest was not as dangerous as it had been before.
It got late, so the old man invited Ramu to his place so that he could return home the next day. The next morning, when Ramu woke up, the old man said, “Let me show you that path to go out of this forest.” Hearing this, Ramu refused to leave, saying, “I would like to stay here with you. As you say, there are still many places in this forest that need care. I have given up the intention of dying and learned that by staying alive, I can help others and save others from dying.” The old man smiled and accepted Ramu’s decision.

The next day, my father bought me a new pair of skating shoes. They were cool grey and black in color and fit my feet perfectly. For the entire week, I dedicated myself to practicing. I would get up early in the morning and head to the empty rink near our house. I started with the basic steps that the instructor had shown me, slowly building up my confidence and balance. As days passed, I noticed a significant improvement in my skills. I was able to skate longer distances without losing my balance and even attempted some simple turns.
When the next class arrived, I walked into the rink with newfound pride. I could see the other students glancing at my new shoes, and I felt a little boost in confidence. During the class, I was able to keep up with the group much better than before. I no longer felt like a clumsy beginner. The instructor noticed my progress and praised me, which made me even more motivated. I continued to practice hard. Over time, my skills continued to grow. Looking back, I realized that skating has not only taught me physical skills but also valuable life lessons about perseverance, determination, and the importance of having a support system.

【答案】范文
Unluckily, clouds started to gather. Before we knew it, the rain was pouring down, making it difficult for everyone to seek shelter near the pool. Upon seeing this, my eyes lit up and I pulled out the box hidden under the table, taking out the stuff prepared earlier. With two booth umbrellas opened and attached to the table, a cosy, dry area came into view. My teammates gathered around me, enthusiastically assisting me to sell the hot chocolate I made with precision, which brought warmth to all those attending the fundraiser. Laughter filled the air once more.
After a while, Coach Abby made a cheerful announcement. “Thanks, everyone! We made such an achievement with joint efforts for the fundraiser that we’ll be able to participate in the swim competition this summer!” The crowd erupted into thunderous applause and cheers. In that moment, I realized the importance of preparing for the worst and working together, especially when the unexpected happened. Today, with mother’s words echoing in my mind, I turned a rainy day into an unforgettable success. Soon, the clouds parted, and rays of sunlight broke through, casting a golden glow over the pool.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 My face hardened and my heart turned cold. “I don’t have fifteen dollars.” I took the photo envelope and walked away, with my cheeks red after my reply. Next, we stopped at the ride-on toy cars in the mall’s food court. There weren’t any other kids there. My kids climbed on them enjoying themselves very much. After a while, we were tired so we unwrapped our lunches that I had brought from home. Although the mall’s food court was near, I didn’t have extra money. It was early for lunch, but we were hungry.
Just when we started our lunch, I found the woman we had met at the photo studio standing next to our table. She said, “Here. Take your family out for ice cream after lunch.” I was surprised. I managed to say “thank you” as she turned and walked away. Then I looked down at what she had given to me. The bills totaled fifteen dollars. Tears rolled down my cheeks as I quietly finished my sandwich. The doubts in my heart melted away and my faith was renewed. Kindness can change someone’s dark moment into a bright one.

【答案】 I had just one lap to go. One lap. I could do it. I tried to keep composed, telling myself not to panic, but to stick to the plan and run my own race. I felt the performer in me move in and take over. In the final 150 metres I could hear the roar of the crowd, giving me a boost at exactly the moment I needed it the most-just when my legs were burning and I could see the gap opening between me and the two girls. My spirits lifted and I felt composed. I began counting down the metres I had left to run: 60 m, 50m, 40 m, 20 m.
Then finally the line appeared. I crossed it, exhausted. I had finished. As I crossed the line, my initial thought was how much harder the race had been than expected. Then my mind turned to the result. Had I done it? I thought I had. As I stood there, staring up and waiting for confirmation, I tried hard to keep negative thoughts from my mind. Then, the moment would stay with me for the rest of my life — my name in lights. That was when it all hit me. Relief, a moment of calm, and a thank you to my inner self, to my classmates and to my coach. I felt a tingle through the whole of my body. I looked out at my fans in the stands, who were waving flags, clapping and shouting with delight. I was the champion.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】At last, I realized the only one who could help out was Kevin. I took a deep breath and said to myself: “Just have a try. Maybe I can count on Kevin.” I called his name with all my strength and knocked at the door at the same time. But the rain and the thunder were so noisy that Kevin, who was in the sitting room when I went out, had no clue of my urgent need. I tried on and on. Fortunately, Kevin got it and ran to the front-door. I screamed to him to open the door and patted the outside switch to direct him. Maybe realizing my urgent situation yet not knowing what to do, he barked anxiously inside.
Eventually Kevin began to act. He seemed to know my trouble and did as I instructed. “Kevin, straighten up, seize the switch and lower your body.” Kevin did raise but missed the switch. I patted the outside switch to show him the target. Much to my surprise, he made it and opened the door for me. I hugged him with relief and gratitude. Maybe he really knew me, but I, should learn more about him.

【答案】One possible version:
Then Augie was brought to make a visit. He walked over to the bed, gently pushing Mr. M’s hand. At first, Mr. M showed no reaction. But then, something mysterious happened—Mr. M’s fingers moved slightly! Mrs. M’s eyes widened in disbelief. She stopped her movements and stared at her husband’s hand, expecting it to move again. Augie, seemingly sensing the change, stayed closer and made a soft noise, as if encouraging Mr. M to respond. Slowly, Mr. M’s hand began to move more purposefully and even managed to reach out his fingers to touch Augie’s fur.
Seeing that her husband was responding, Mrs. M started crying aloud! Her tears were a mixture of joy, relief, and disbelief. For weeks, she had watched helplessly as Mr. M lay in the ICU. But now, with Augie’s gentle presence, there was a ray of hope, a sign that her husband was still there, fighting to come back. In the following days, Augie’s visits became a regular occurrence. Each time he entered the room, Mr. M’s response grew stronger. In the end, Mr. M was well enough to be released from the hospital. Sometimes, the amazing things can happen when we open our hearts to the healing power of animals.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】But there was no Jane on the bed. Mum and Dad were really worried now. Mum called Jane’s name, but there was no Jane to be found. Jason was anxious too. If he had kept an eye on his sister, she wouldn’t have gone missing. Dad advised scattering and searching for any spot she could hide in . Mum took care of the sofa, Dad searched under the bed, and Jason was responsible for the bed. As Jason tried to approach a pink bed, he found a figure in the desk cabinet. It was Jane who was sleeping like a baby.
When Jason pushed Jane softly, she woke up and came crawling out. “What were you doing?” Jason asked. Adorable Jane raised her head, with a smile unfolding. “Look! I think the desk is perfect for your room. Neither too big nor too small.” At the first glance, Jason was sure that was it! Painted brown, the desk was designed fit for a medium room, not to mention its multiple drawers where Jason could place his books. Soon after, Dad and Mum also found the children and agreed. After Jane finally chose what she wanted, the Jacksons sat in the café, enjoying the fruits of shopping contentedly.

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Later that day, John went to work, determined to make some changes. He knew that it was time to reassess his life, make his family his number one priority, and be a more caring husband and father. He informed his staff and clients that from then on, he would be working during office hours only. He also promised himself that he would participate in all activities involving his children and share household tasks with his wife. Indeed, the coming weekend, after helping Jenny with the shopping, he would take his family to the local park for a day out.
Soon, John felt a big improvement in his life and work. By making changes, he found the right work -life balance to be both effective at work and happy at home. Amazingly, by reducing the amount of time spent on work, John had become much more enthusiastic about his job and more focused on what needed to be done. The result was improved work efficiency and increased productivity. Besides, as John spent more time at home, the family had grown closer together. Jenny was less tired than before, his relationship with Kevin was improving, and he was a proud father at Sophie’s birthday party! To his satisfaction, John had finally discovered the secret to happiness.

【答案】Seeing his portrait, the homeless man was moved to tears. He benefited a lot from it. He said to Peterson, “It was your help that kept me off the streets, and my heart is full of gratitude. I want to make good use of the money to start a business, and I want to do my best to help those who need help in the future,” Peterson replied, “You are welcome. Actively helping people in need of help is my greatest joy” With these words, the two men hugged each other tightly.
Inspired by Peterson and Faris, many artists joined them. The artists say they will call on more people to help the homeless. Over time, more and more artists have joined FIC, and by helping more and more homeless people to expand the impact and attract more artists. As more and more people were helped, the organization became more and more popular and was honored by the government. As time went on, FIC sold more and more portraits and earned more and more income, which was widely recognized by the society.

Passage 2
(23-24高二上·安徽黄山·期末)
Standing in front of the starting line again, Tom felt nervous. The memories of the shark attack flashed through his mind, but he pushed them aside and focused on the task at hand. He took a deep breath and reminded himself of all the hard work he had put in to get to this point. As the starting signal sounded, Tom paddled out to the wave with determination. He felt the familiar rush of adrenaline as he caught the wave and stood up on his surfboard.
Para 2:
Tom fell into the sea. But instead of panicking, he stayed calm and quickly climbed back onto his surfboard. He knew that setbacks were part of the sport and that he couldn't let them discourage him. He paddled back out to the wave and tried again. This time, he rode the wave all the way to the shore, feeling the thrill of victory as he emerged from the water. The crowd cheered as Tom walked up the beach, knowing that he had overcome a huge obstacle and achieved his dream once again.

【答案】
Suddenly I had an idea. “Guys, I know what we should do,” I said. My heart was pounding crazily. The first rehearsal finally came. Then came our cue. With the hedgehog costumes, we ran onstage in a line, steps synchronized and arms waving together. We stopped in front of the Queen of Hearts. She was so surprised that she almost forgot her next line. The Oueen took her mallet and aimed at Hedgehog 1—Ella. She spun and jumped across the stage using moves from Ballet. “Wow,” said everyone. The mallet came down on Hedgehod 2,Tyler. Tyler glided across the stage donig a sideways Moonwalk. The Queen looked excited as she prepared to hit me. When the Mallet tapped me, I did three back flips.
“That was fantastic, hedgehogs!” Mrs. Pearson said. “Where did you learn to dance like that? The three of us looked at each other and proudly said, “We self-taught and practiced for a long time.” Mrs. Pearson showed a surprised expression. She was very optimistic about our performance and excitedly said, “You can officially perform on stage like this.” We jumped up with joy. We knew we managed to surprise everyone by making small parts cool. Finally, the performance was very successful. Especially when the three of us hedgehogs performed, everyone erupted into applause. I still miss my friends in Poulsbo. But Newland feels a lot less like the rabbit hole now, and a lot more like home.

【答案】 Then I saw my classmate Janet come out of a bathroom booth (厕所隔间), tears streaming down her face. I rushed up to her and asked what was wrong. Seeing my worried look, Janet quietly said she had heard what I said about the powder. She went on explaining that she was my secret friend and would like to give me something special. She went to the flea market and saw the powder that she thought would be fancy. She had hoped I could like the gift, but it ended up embarrassing me instead. Instantly I realized that I should apologize.
Along with my apologies, I explained the reason. I sincerely told Janet that I didn’t mean what I said. I knew deep down that she just wanted to make me happy with her gift and I told her I understood. She really looked relieved after hearing my comforting explanation. Although the powder may not be what I wished, it was a thoughtful present that I knew Janet had tried her best to find. From then on, I appreciate any present I get even if it was not something I was expecting. All that matters is the thought behind it.

【答案】One possible version:
Daisy found that Martin seemed to be worried. “Is everything alright?” Daisy asked him. Martin’s eyes welled up. “Sadly, that’s not so. My daughter is ill, and she needs to be operated on. However, I am concerned about what will happen if we’re unable to save enough money for it. I don’t want to lose my daughter.” Daisy assured him that everything would be fine. And then, Martin wiped off his tears and quietly left the room, feeling terrible and thinking if God could help him save a stranger, why he was testing him so much when it came to his daughter.
As the saying goes, one good turn deserves another. A week later, good news came that Martin had received funding for Anne’s surgery. He, along with Helen, couldn’t contain their excitement and left for the hospital to confirm all of the details and set a date for the operation. When they arrived, they were surprised to meet Daisy. “Daisy? Was it you that paid for my daughter’s operation?” Martin’s eyes welled up once more. “That’s the least I can do, Martin,” Daisy said. To their great relief, Anne’s operation was very successful. The dark snowy night marked the end of Martin’s misery as well as Daisy’s.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Naida did what it could to lead the rescue team to where Karina was.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】This morning, Naida suddenly walked away and headed back into town, ignoring Karina’s hopeless cry and leaving her completely alone. The poor little girl cried with fear, tears blurring her eyes. She curled up in a tight ball, wondering what was waiting for her. At the same time, Naida found its way back home. When Karina’s mum saw it, she was excited, hugging it tightly with tears filling her eyes. She was more convinced that Karina was still alive. The rescue efforts were restarted, giving hope to the family.
Naida did what it could to lead the rescue team to where Karina was. With the help of her sharp smelling, the rescuer spotted the little girl in an overgrown grassy field. Karina was lying there, hiding herself from danger and keeping herself warm. On seeing her beloved friend back, Karina cuddled it close, whispering in its ears. “I know you won’t abandon me. Thanks for your always being with me!” How Naida protected Karina is indeed an amazing proof to the friendship that our four-legged friends can show.

【答案】参考范文1:
There I was surprised to see Brigitte, who was terrified of water, dive into the pool. Breathless and astonished, I watched Brigitte mustering her courage to swim towards my son, who was struggling desperately in the icy water. Almost meanwhile, I sprang into action. With every powerful stroke, I got close to where Forrest was floating. Fortunately, he was about to sink when I grabbed him by the arm and dragged him to the shallow end of the pool, with Brigitte paddling alongside, concern obvious in her big and intelligent eyes. The moment I got my boy out, our beloved dog bounced around him, constantly licking his pale face as if to warm him. Voice trembling, I called 911 and soon we were rushed to the nearest hospital. Every second counted!
Finally, the doctor said Forrest was all right and could be released from hospital. At this, I heaved a sigh of relief. On arriving home, our dog Brigitte leaped high up to give us warm and wet kisses, wagging her tail cheerfully. Looking directly into her eyes with gratitude and a bit of guilt, I scooped her up and held her close to my chest, unwilling to let her go for a single minute. It was then that I suddenly became aware that life sometimes can be cruel and miserable, but there was always someone or something guiding you, protecting you, and accompanying you with unconditional love and loyalty. Our dog was just our guardian angel, shattering my despair about losing our home and guiding us out of trouble. How could I leave her?
参考范文2:
There I was surprised to see Brigitte, who was terrified of water, dive into the pool. Then to my horror, I caught sight of Forrest’s yellow sleeper. Brigitte was bravely doing her best to keep him afloat by holding on to his sleeper with her mouth. At the same time, she was desperately trying to swim to the shallow end. Only then did I realize that Forrest had somehow opened the door, wandered out and fallen into the pool. In a split second, I dove in, lifted my precious baby out and carried him inside. Hands shaking, I called 911 and we were rushed to the hospital immediately, where the doctor kept him for observation for one night.
Finally, the doctor said Forrest was all right and could be released from hospital. Back home, once Brigitte saw him, she barked with apparent joy and wouldn’t let Forrest out of her sight. In time she settled down, but remained dedicated to Forrest and followed him everywhere, concerned about his safety. Even when Forrest was asleep, Brigitte crammed herself under the crib, keeping a vigil. Our dog was indeed an angel, erasing any despair I might have had about losing our home. A house could always be replaced, but knowing we had each other around was the greatest blessing of all. I was grateful she was part of our lives, who I would never give up.
