He instructed each student to 16 three poems from The Norton Anthology of American Literature and claimed, “You’re going to be alone in the future, and 17 is going to be all you have.” The task seems 18 because the act of memorizing a poem feels old-fashioned in an era when few of us encounter poetry at all. 19 , I began to change my view on a trip to Seattle.
For hours, I read nothing else but a poem in the 20 . Sometimes I spoke its lines aloud, my voice 21 by the airplane’s thrum (轰鸣). Sometimes I 22 the whole poem at once, and sometimes I 23 a single stanza (诗节) over and over. By the time my plane 24 on the West Coast, I had the whole thing, all 40 lines of it, in my head. The 25 of repetition reduces the great charm it has. But as you were 26 in the lines, they finally come together again, and the scattered (零散的) text transforms back into a 27 , a more valuable one than it was before.
Poetry continues itself by becoming a part of those who read it. Some poems I’ve memorized 28 with me, always vivid and fresh. Memorizing poetry will not make your life 29 , but it will make you more in touch with language and expands our own 30 of what we are.
