Arm wrestling (扳手腕)was one of my favorite ways of playing with my brothers growing up. It allowed my younger brother and me to test our strength without getting tackled. I also put up a good fight when arm wrestling with my older brother and his friends. Their greater strength and experience made the challenge even more interesting. Every match seemed to end in a good laugh, no matter who won.
Now I’m a scientist who studies animals in the wild. I have seen that playing is a great way to socialize; there is so much more to play than fun and games. When humans and other animals play, they are building trust with siblings (兄弟姐妹)and friends. They learn how far they can push their partners before anyone becomes angry or physically hurt. That’s called “testing boundaries.”
Older playmates may self-handicap, appearing to be less competent than they really are to help younger players learn skills and explore their abilities. Play offers a safe space, where everyone knows the rules and can experiment with new ways to move, think, and respond to others.
Over the past 30 years, I’ve learned a lot about play by watching young male elephants test their strength through sparring (拳击)games with their friends and superiors. Group sparring matches are common at sunset, when several different elephant families show up at the water hole to drink.
After the initial excitement of the arrival and a good long drink, young males slip away from the sides of their watchful moms and aunts to form sparring rings. An elder sister makes sure that the playing doesn’t get out of hand, so she is ever present with a trunk on the back or over the head to calm the enthusiasm. That way, the younger males don’t end up on the bottom of the pile.
4. What does the author want to convey by mentioning his childhood experience?
A. Winning is not the true meaning of play.
B. Play is essential in children’s development.
C. Children prefer to play traditional games.
D. Arm wrestling is a safe way to test strength.
5. What benefit of play does the author emphasize?
A. It brings fun. B. It enables boundary breaking.
C. It settles conflicts. D. It develops socializing skills.
6. What does the underlined word “self-handicap” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Pretend to be weaker. B. Warn others of risks.
C. Show one’s strength. D. Teach others skills.
7. What role does the elder sister play in young male elephants’ sparring games?
A. She teaches them how to win the game.
B She helps them find a proper place for the game.
C. She encourages them to compete with each other.
D. She prevents the game from becoming too violent.
B 5. D 6. A 7. D
根据第一段“Every match seemed to end in a good laugh, no matter who won.(无论谁赢,每场比赛似乎都以开怀大笑告终)”及第二段“I have seen that playing is a great way to socialize; there is so much more to play than fun and games.(我发现玩耍是一种很好的社交方式;玩耍的意义远不止乐趣和游戏本身)” 可知,作者提及童年扳手腕经历,是为了引出“玩耍的核心并非输赢”这一观点,进而铺垫后文对玩耍深层意义——玩耍对孩子非常重要——的探讨。
根据第二段“I have seen that playing is a great way to socialize(我发现玩耍是一种很好的社交方式)”以及“When humans and other animals play, they are building trust with siblings and friends. They learn how far they can push their partners before anyone becomes angry or physically hurt.(当人类和其他动物玩耍时,他们会与兄弟姐妹和朋友建立信任。他们会了解在任何人发怒或受伤之前,自己能对同伴“试探”到什么程度)”可知,作者重点强调玩耍对“社交技能培养”的益处。故选D。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“self-handicap”后的解释“appearing to be less competent than they really are to help younger players learn skills and explore their abilities.(表现出比实际能力更弱的样子,以帮助年幼的参与者学习技能、探索自身能力)”可知,self-handicap指的是“故意表现得更弱”。故选A。
根据第五段“An elder sister makes sure that the playing doesn’t get out of hand, so she is ever present with a trunk on the back or over the head to calm the enthusiasm. That way, the younger males don’t end up on the bottom of the pile.(姐姐会确保玩耍不会失控,因此她总会在旁边用象鼻轻触幼象的背部或头部,平息它们的热情。这样一来,年幼的雄象就不会被压在最下面)”可知,姐姐的作用是“防止玩耍变得过于激烈(暴力)”。故选D。
C
Is modern fruit cultivated (培育) to be sweeter than in the past? The short answer is yes, though the longer answer is more complicated. Some of the most powerful evidence that fruit is sweeter than before comes from zoos.
In 2018, it was reported that Melboume Zoo in Australia had stopped giving fruit to most of its animals because cultivated fruit was now so sweet that it was causing tooth decay (蛀牙) and weight gain. The monkeys at the zoo were provided with a lower-sugar vegetable-based diet instead of bananas.
Among fruit cultivators, the word “quality” is now routinely used as an equal for “high in sugar” (though firmness, color and size are also considerations). In 2010, in an article looking at ways to enhance the sweetness of fruit using “molecuiar (分子的) approaches”, a group of plant scientists of the Republic of Korea wrote that “in general, the sugar content” of many fruits is now higher than before “owing to continuous selection and breeding”. Modern apple varieties, the scientists noted, were on average sweeter than older ones.
Cultivation isn’t the only reason that modern fruit is sweeter; there’s also climate change. Research from Japan found that since the 1970s, with rising temperatures, Fuji apples (which were already a sweet variety) have become significantly sweeter and softer. The lead researcher, Toshihoko Sugiura, said that “if you could taste an apple harvested 30 years ago, you would feel the difference”.
It is sometimes claimed that the sweetness of modern fruit is not due to higher sugar content so much as the fact that the bitterness and sourness of wild fruit have been steadily cultivated out of it. There’s a grain — but only a grain — of truth in this. Studies of wild apples do indeed suggest that some ancient varieties were just as high in sugar as a modern Pink Lady or Honeycrisp. The difference is that there was much wider variation in sugar content across wild apples whereas the modern supermarket apple seldom drops below a certain level of sweetness.
8. Why did Melbourne Zoo stop giving fruit to most of its animals?
A. The animals preferred a vegetable- based diet.
B. Modern fruit did great harm to animals’ teeth.
C. The sugar content of modern fruit is lower than before.
D. The flavor of modern fruit was not good for the animals.
9. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. The sugar content is breeders’ first priority.
B. Sweeter fruits are just a result of natural selection.
C. The sweetness of modern apples is equal to the average of older ones.
D. Molecular approaches are adopted to add the sweetness of modern fruit.
10. What do studies of wild apples in the last paragraph suggest?
A. Apples of old species tasted less sweet.
B. The sugar content of wild apples varied greatly.
C. The sweetness of modern apples is of the same level.
D. Fruit is sweet because bitterness in it has disappeared.
11. What’s the best title for this passage?
A. Modern or Old: Which Is Better? B. Modern Fruit: Sweetness Is Quality.
C. Fruit Is Sweeter: It’s Not a Misconception. D. Melbourne Zoo: Animals Stop Eating Fruits.
B 9. D 10. B 11. C

根据文章第二段的“In 2018, it was reported that Melboume Zoo in Australia had stopped giving fruit to most of its animals because cultivated fruit was now so sweet that it was causing tooth decay(蛀牙) and weight gain.(据报道,2018年,澳大利亚墨尔本动物园已经停止给大多数动物提供水果,因为现在种植的水果太甜了,会导致蛀牙和体重增加。)”
根据文章第三段“Among fruit cultivators, the word “quality” is now routinely used as an equal for “high in sugar”(though firmness, color and size are also considerations). In 2010, in an article looking at ways to enhance the sweetness of fruit using “molecuiar(分子的) approaches”, a group of plant scientists of the Republic of Korea wrote that “in general, the sugar content” of many fruits is now higher than before “owing to continuous selection and breeding”. (在水果种植者中,“优质”这个词现在通常被用作“高糖”的同义词(尽管硬度、颜色和大小也要考虑在内)。2010年,韩国的一组植物科学家在一篇文章中探讨了如何利用“分子方法”来提高水果的甜度,他们写道,“总的来说,由于不断的选择和育种”,现在许多水果的“含糖量”比以前要高。)”可知,现代水果的甜度采用分子方法,故选D项。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段的“The difference is that there was much wider variation in sugar content across wild apples, whereas the modern supermarket apple seldom drops below a certain level of sweetness.(不同之处在于,野生苹果的含糖量变化更大,而现代超市里的苹果很少低于一定的甜度。)”
根据文章第一段内容“Is modern fruit cultivated(培育) to be sweeter than in the past? The short answer is yes, though the longer answer is more complicated.( 现代种植的水果比过去更甜吗?简短的回答是肯定的,但较长的回答更为复杂)”并通读全文可知,文章主要讲述了现代农业技术使得现代水果比以前更甜。可知C项“水果更甜:这不是一个误解。”为最佳标题,故选C项。
D
Earlier this year extremely cold Arctic air and severe winter weather swept southward into much of the US. Tens of millions of people were affected by dangerously cold temperatures. These severe cold events occur when the polar jet stream — the familiar jet stream of winter that runs along the boundary between Arctic and more temperate air-dips deeply southward, bringing the cold Arctic air to regions that don’t often experience it.
After Earth just experienced its hottest year on record, it may seem surprising to set so many cold records. But does this cold snap (寒流) contradict human-caused global warming? Absolutely and surely, it does not.
No single weather event can prove or disprove global warming. Many studies have shown that the number of extreme cold events is clearly decreasing with global warming, as predicted and understood from physical reasoning. Whether global warming may, contrary to expectations, be playing some supporting role in the intensity of these events is an open question. Some research suggests it does.
There is evidence suggesting that Arctic changes connected with global warming have increased the likelihood of such vortex disruptions The effects of the strengthened high latitude (纬度)warming known as Arctic amplification on regional snow cover and sea ice may build up the weather patterns that, in turn, result in a stretched polar vortex.
More recently, we have shown that while the number of these severe cold events is clearly decreasing — as expected with global warming — it does not appear that their intensity is correspondingly decreasing, despite the rapid warming in their Arctic source regions.
So, while the world can expect fewer of these severe cold events in the future, many regions need to remain prepared for exceptional cold when it does occur. A better understanding of the pathways of influence between Arctic surface conditions, the stratospheric (平流层) polar vortex and mid-latitude winter weather would improve our ability to predict these events and their severity.
12. Which question is still up in the air?
A. What is the polar jet stream.
B. Whether cold contradicts global warming.
C. Whether globe warming worsens extreme cold.
D. What may have led to this polar vortex being stretched.
13. What can we know about the weather from the text?
A. The strength of cold is not reducing. B. The strength of heat is not decreasing.
C. The threat of global warming is disappearing. D. The number of severe cold events is increasing.
14. What is suggested in the text?
A. Being ready for the unusual cold. B. Recording the hottest years in Arctic.
C. Paying a visit to the USA and Arctic. D. Learning high-latitude winter weather.
15. Which column of a newspaper is the text probably taken from?
A. Culture and History. B. Science and Nature.
C. The Making of a Nation. D. Health and Education News.
C 13. A 14. A 15. B

根据第三段“Many studies have shown that the number of extreme cold events is clearly decreasing with global warming, as predicted and understood from physical reasoning. Whether global warming may, contrary to expectations, be playing some supporting role in the intensity of these events is an open question.(许多研究表明,正如预测和物理推理所理解的那样,随着全球变暖,极端寒冷事件的数量明显减少。与预期相反,全球变暖是否在这些事件的强度中发挥了某种辅助作用,这是一个悬而未决的问题。一些研究表明确实如此)”可知,全球变暖是否会加剧极端寒冷的问题还悬而未决。故选C。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“More recently, we have shown that while the number of these severe cold events is clearly decreasing — as expected with global warming — it does not appear that their intensity is correspondingly decreasing, despite the rapid warming in their Arctic source regions.(最近,我们已经表明,虽然这些严重寒冷事件的次数明显减少——正如全球变暖所预期的那样——但它们的强度似乎并没有相应减少,尽管它们的北极源头地区正在迅速变暖)”可知,寒冷的强度似乎并没有相应减少。故选A。
根据最后一段“So, while the world can expect fewer of these severe cold events in the future, many regions need to remain prepared for exceptional cold when it does occur.(因此,尽管世界预计未来这种严重寒冷事件的次数会减少,但许多地区需要为异常寒冷的发生做好准备)”可知,这篇文章暗示了为不寻常的寒冷做好准备。故选A。
根据第一段“Earlier this year extremely cold Arctic air and severe winter weather swept southward into much of the US. Tens of millions of people were affected by dangerously cold temperatures. 第二节 (满分 25 分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When we were finally dismissed from the last class of the day, the students streamed out of the classrooms. It was another boring day after school. I dragged my feet home as I sighed. Yet another uneventful day, I thought. Little did I know that the day would take a turn for the worse.
The lift lobby (电梯间) of my flat was old and dirty. The walls, which were painted white, had been dirtied over many years. I reached my flat’s lobby, and pressed the lift button and went in. Just then, Mrs Lim, my elderly neighbour, hobbled (蹒跚) in. She looked ancient with tissue paper white hair, wearing a faded old-fashioned dress. I held the lift door open, flashing a friendly smile, and politely greeted her. I asked her how she felt that day and pressed the buttons. She thanked me for being so polite, then we were silent for the rest of the ride.
The lift fell down increasingly fast. There were loud clanking sounds here and there while the lift grew slower and slower. My heart beat hard and fast as my hands turned cold and wet with sweat. Unfortunately, the lift came to an abrupt stop at the fifth floor. I pressed the buttons hard several times, but it was of no help. The lights on the buttons had gone out. It soon dawned on me that we were trapped. An icy fear crept up my spine. Mrs Lim was hysterical
“We will never get out!” she cried with her face pale. It had become a colourless mask. I had no time to lose. I pressed the bell in the lift immediately. The sound was surely deafening, but what other choice did I have? Mrs Lim burst into tears. I tried my very best to comfort her, telling her that everything would be all right and that we needed to find out how to get out safely. Mrs Lim began having trouble breathing, and I immediately helped her sit down and loosened her collar.
Paragraph 1: Several minutes passed, but no help came.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Several minutes passed, but no help came. The air inside the lift grew stale, and panic started to set in. Mrs Lim's condition was worsening, and I felt a sense of helplessness creeping over me. I tried to stay calm and think of a way out, but the situation seemed dire. The silence was deafening, broken only by Mrs Lim’s labored breathing and occasional sobs. Time seemed to stretch on endlessly as we waited for a miracle.
Bang! My hopes were lifted when I heard the firefighters on the other side of the lift door. Relief flooded through me as I realized help had finally arrived. The sound of tools clanging against the door signaled their efforts to rescue us. Moments later, the door was pried open, and fresh air rushed in. We were safe. Mrs Lim was quickly attended to by the paramedics, and I was filled with gratitude for their swift response. As we were escorted out of the lift, I couldn’t help but feel a profound sense of appreciation for the fragility of life and the importance of helping others in times of need.

Mathgames
Content appropriate for: pre-K to eighth-grade students
This is a simple platform that lets kids choose the kind of game they want to play and learn with. You have to pay for some of them, but most are free and allow users to choose not only the difficulty level, but also what skill they want to practice, from simple counting to mixed equations (方程式).

A Winning is not the true meaning of play.
B Play is essential in children’s development.
B. She helps them find a proper place for the game.
C. She encourages them to compete with each other.
D. She prevents the game from becoming too violent.
The difference is that there was much wider variation in sugar content across wild apples, whereas the modern supermarket apple seldom drops below a certain level of sweetness.
More recently we have shown that while the number of these severe cold events is clearly decreasing — as expected with global warming — it does not appear that their intensity is correspondingly decreasing, despite the rapid warming in their Arctic source regions.
