Bonding with Family
Recently, I surveyed 52 classmates on weekly parent-communication time. A considerable number, 21 in total, spend 1-3 hours of talks with parents weekly and 14 less than 1 hour. 12 students have talks for 3-7 hours, while a mere 5 devote over 7 hours. Clearly, many of us lack sufficient interaction with our families.
To improve this, it is suggested that we set aside 15-30 minutes over or after dinner to share interesting school happenings with parents. We can also arrange a weekly family activity, like tending to plants together or hosting a themed movie night at weekends. These shared moments help bridge emotional gaps and strengthen family bonds.
It’s essential to invest more time into exchanges with our beloved ones, and by doing so, we can turn our homes into a warmer and more closely-knit place.

Sensing my hopelessness, Leo didn’t laugh or make a joke. Instead, he quickly grabbed a clean brush and gently said, “Let me fix this.” He skillfully blended the green paint into the desert section, adding small blue strokes around it. “Look,” he grinned, “now it’s an oasis! Sometimes accidents bring cool ideas.” His calmness surprised me. For the first time, I noticed his creativity wasn’t just jokes — it solved real problems. We spent the afternoon redesigning that area together, and I finally agreed to add his plastic animals as “endangered species” near the oasis.
On the presentation day, we confidently displayed our model. As I explained the scientific accuracy — local plants, water cycles — Leo demonstrated the lively interactions: ants gathering near the oasis, birds hovering above. Mr. Evans praised our balance: “Excellent detail, and the oasis shows ecosystem adaptability!” Seeing Leo’s proud smile, I realized our differences didn’t divide us; they made the project richer. We earned an A, proving that day and night could create a perfect landscape together.

At 17 years old, most are still learning basic driving skills in America. Once the car is parked, the day is packed with school activities and hanging out with friends. But at 17, Maggie Taraska had a distinctive goal in mind: Fly alone across the United States.
Both of Maggie’s parents were retired from the air force, so the urge to fly is in Maggie’s blood. She went to flight school, put in the hours with an instructor and started on her training hours. But on her first takeoff, something didn’t sound right. The plane had lost one of the landing gear wheels. “As soon as I took off, I just heard something was wrong instinctively,” said Maggie.
Her instructor talked to her from the ground while she circled a few times to gather herself. “I was frightened, thinking about all the bad things that could have happened; I was thinking about how my parents were on the ground as I knew they were watching.”
Stress and panic can cause any of us to make careless decisions. It takes mental practice to calm down. “Take a few breaths, focus on the moment and follow the plan. I panicked a bit, but followed my training.”
Maggie was a little shaky as she talked to the tower, but she had a perfect belly landing that skidded on the infield grass. Her father couldn’t be prouder. “By the time I saw Maggie on her approach, it was a better approach than I could have flown,” he said. Cheers erupted in the tower, and Maggie took a deep breath and climbed out of the plane.
Credit does go to the crew for talking to her. Yes, we all need someone to talk us through challenging times, but in the end, it was all Magic at the controls. We could all be forgiven for calling it quits after an experience like that. After all, it was a bit distressing. So walking away would be understandable. But five days later, Maggie was going through her pre-flight safety inspections, checking the wings, especially checking the landing gear.
“It feels amazing,” she said, “It gives an incredible sense of liberation.” At some point in our lives, we will all be in a situation for the first time. It’s scary. But if you face your fears, the whole world opens up to you.
24. What mainly influenced Maggie’s urge to fly alone?
A. Her parents’ background in air force.
B. Her experience of school activities.
C. Her instructor’s encouragements.
D. Her basic driving skills.
25. What did Maggie do when hearing something wrong during takeoff?
A. She landed the plane immediately.
B. She thought of her parents’ expectation.
C. She circled a few times to calm herself down.
D. She continued flying as if nothing had happened.
26. Which words would best describe Maggie’s personality?
A. Proud and intelligent. B. Positive and cautious.
C. Patient and responsible. D. Fearless and determined.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Failure is the mother of success. B. A good beginning is half done.
C. Fortune favors the brave. D. Practice makes perfect.

Yellowstone’s wolves are helping a new generation of young aspen (山杨) trees to grow tall and join the forest — the first new generation of such trees in Yellowstone’s northern range in 80 years.
Gray wolves had disappeared from Yellowstone National Park by 1930 following extensive habitat loss, human hunting and government wolf-killing programs. Without these wolves, populations of deer grew quickly. At their peak population, an estimated 18,000 deer ranged across the park, living on grasses as well as the leaves of trees like aspen. This prevented young trees from establishing themselves, and surveys in the 1990s found no young aspen trees. But when wolves were reintroduced in 1995, the picture began to change. As wolf numbers rose, the deer population in the park dropped sharply, and it is now down to about 2,000.
In the new study, published in the journal Forest Ecology and Management, Luke Painter and his colleagues from Oregon State University surveyed aspen stands. “We’re seeing significant new growth of young aspen and this is the first time that we’ve found it in our plots since the 1940s,” Painter said.
However, while Yellowstone’s aspen are recovering, they aren’t out of the woods just yet. The deer population has declined, but bison (野牛) numbers have increased in recent years. Bison are a lot harder for wolves to take down, said Painter, so increasing numbers of bison may be emerging as a new restriction on aspen in some areas.
The re-emergence of aspen has widespread effects, Painter said. “Aspen are a key species for biodiversity. The aspen trees let more sunlight through their leaves, which creates a habitat that supports a lot of diversity of plants.”
“The paper shows the important ecological benefits occurring from the restoration of wolves to Yellowstone National Park,” Dominick Spracklen, a professor at the University of Leeds, said. “Ecosystems that lack large carnivores (食肉动物) are often increasingly out of balance. While reintroducing carnivores raises important challenges around human-wildlife coexistence, this work brings the significant ecological benefits in the long run.”
28. What can be inferred about Yellowstone Park before 1930 according to the text?
A. Deer population reached its peak.
B. Human activities slightly affected wolves.
C. Bison were the main species in the park.
D. Gray wolves existed with deer there.
29. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 4 mean?
A. The aspen trees are too young to make a forest.
B. The aspen trees cannot get rid of survival threat.
C. Other tree species may hold back aspen’s recovery.
D. Yellowstone is not the best habitat for aspen trees.
30. What is Professor Spracklen’s attitude toward carnivore restoration in ecosystems?
A. Favorable. B. Skeptical. C. Disapproving. D. Worried.
31. Which of the following can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The History of Gray wolves in Yellowstone
B. The Return of Gray wolves Revives Aspen Trees
C. The Challenges of Human-Wildlife Coexistence Grow
D. The Restoration of Large Carnivores in National Parks

Washington University in St. Louis researchers have developed a filter (滤器) that treats wastewater and also generates electricity-an advance that could reshape energy use at treatment plants.
The new system uses bacteria (细菌) to produce an electric charge while breaking down organic material otherwise seen as waste The findings from the lab of Zhen He, a professor of energy, environmental and chemical engineering, were detailed in the academic journal Environmental Science: Water Research & Technology. The research fits into a growing set of technologies that pushes back against the traditional view of regarding wastewater as waste and looks instead to put it to beneficial use. Depending on how thoroughly it is treated, recovered water can be repurposed for anything from “undrinkable” uses like crop-watering to drinking water.
The Washington U. team’s new filter, however, provides an added bonus. The system uses a cloth to collect organic matter from the wastewater and to provide bacteria with a place to settle. Then, as bacteria consume the organic materials, electrons (电子) are released and gathered by the cloth, creating electricity. Steel around the filter sends the electric current from the “bacteria fuel cell” to an external circuit. That two-way function is what makes the electrode unique.
Treating one cubic meter of wastewater could, in theory, generate 20 watts of power for an hour. That means a larger unit or a collection of units could power lights or larger electrical devices! The team, next, aims to develop further and make it leap into the real world. Ideally, He would love to see the filters used by urban wastewater treatment facilities. But He says a more likely, transitional step could be for the filters to first catch on in smaller individual industrial factories that have wastewater to treat. The ultimate aim is to change wastewater treatment from an energy user into a power source.
“Is it really a waste?” He asked. “Or can we treat it as a resource?” Viewing wastewater as a resource rather than waste enables sustainable energy generation and promotes environmental protection, presenting a mutually beneficial approach to wastewater treatment.
32. What determines the use of the recovered water?
A. The storage time. B. The extent of treatment.
C. The amount of bacteria. D. The source of original water.
33. What does the underlined phrase “an added bonus” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Power generation. B. Less pollution.
C. Water purification. D. More electrons.
34. What might be the next step for the team?
A. Exploring potential markets of the filters.
B. Improving the performance of the system.
C. Fitting the filters in urban wastewater plants.
D. Popularizing the filters in small-sized workshops.
35. Why does He raise questions in the last paragraph?
A. To highlight wastewater-not-waste concept.
B. To recognize the achievement of the research.
C. To stress the urgency of the wastewater treatment.
D. To discuss the possible direction for further study.

On November 14, the Shenzhou-20 taikonaut crew--Chen Dong, Chen Zhongrui and Wang Jie--successfully landed at the Dongfeng Landing Site aboard the Shenzhou-21 spaceship, marking a safe end to their 204-day orbital mission. Their return, 56 (original) scheduled for Novembe 5, was delayed 57 nine days due to a minor crack in Shenzhou-20’s porthole (舷窗) caused by space debris (片) impact.
This unprecedented (史无前例的) emergency triggered China's well-designed "one main and one backup" space rescue plan. Instead of risking a return on the 58 (damage) spacectaft, the crew transferred to Shenzhou-21. This marks the first time in China's manned space histoty that another operational spaceship 59 (carry) a different taikonaut crew back to Earth. While 60 (wait) for the rescheduled return, the trio continued scientifc experiments with the Shenzhou-21 crew, adding 61 (value) data to their research.
During their record-breaking orbital stay, the Shenzhou-20 team completed four extravehicular (舱外的) activities, seven cargo transfer tasks, 62 a series of cutting-edge experiments in space life sciences and materials science.
The smooth emergency return fully demonstrated the 63 (reliable) of China's manned space engineering system. As the taikonauts 64 (confirm) in good health after landing, this mission proved that China's space program has successfully passed the test, 65 delivers an excellent answer to the nation's expectations.

I never imagined I would be paired with Leo for the biology project. We were as different as day and night. I was quiet, loved details, and always planned everything ahead of time. Leo was the class joker, loud and seeming not to care. He made jokes during lectures and rarely took notes.
When Mr. Evans announced we would be partners for the term-long “Ecosystem Model” project, my heart fell. It was the most important one in the whole school year and accounted for 40% of our final grade. How could we possibly work together? I saw Leo smiling at me from his seat, which only made me more nervous.
Our first meeting was a disaster. I brought a three-page plan, complete with timelines and material lists. Leo showed up empty-handed, suggesting we “just build a cool forest or something”. I insisted on researching local plant species first. He wanted to start by building a small river. We argued for an hour and got nowhere. I left the library feeling upset. This was going to be the longest term in my life.
The next few weeks were a struggle. I did most of the research alone, staying up late to gather data. Leo would sometimes help during our meetings, but his ideas often seemed unrealistic. He wanted to add tiny plastic animals, arguing it would make the model more lively. However, I thought it was unscientific. We made compromises(妥协) on a few things, but the tension was always there. I started to believe we would fail badly.
One afternoon, we were in the art room, painting the base for our model. I was painting a grassland section when my hand slipped. A huge line of bright green paint splashed(泼洒) across the section I had carefully made to look like a dry desert. It was ruined. All my hard work was destroyed in a second. I felt tears welling up in my eyes. I was so tired, so disappointed. I just wanted to give up.

2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Sensing my hopelessness, Leo didn’t laugh or make a joke.

14. What did the man do?
A. He was caught speeding. B. He entered a restricted area. C. He parked in a wrong place.

【答案】13. C 14. A 15. C 16. B
【原文】W: There are three diferent ways that you can take care of this. The first one is to simply pay the fine.
M: How much is the fne?
W: The fine for driving over the speed limit in the school zone is $110.
M: Ouch! That's a day's salary! You can be sure that I'll never make this mistake again.
W: Now on the other hand, you also have the right to appear in court. If you feel you didn't break the law today, and you can prove it to the judge, you won't have to pay anything.
M: And if he finds me guilty?
W: If you're found guilty, you will still have to pay the fne, plus court costs
M: Wow .. going to court sounds like too much trouble, and who knows if the judge would decide that I'm innocent? You said there was a third way.I hope that one doesn't involve me paying $110.
W: Yes, the third one removes the fine for you. You can elect to go to a four-hour driver improvement training course.

M: Now let me tell you a bit more about some of the changes to Croft Valley Park. One of our most exciting developments has been the playground. We were aware that we had nowhere for children to have fun, and decided to use our available funds to set up a facility in a large space to the north of the park. It's open year-round, though it closes early in the winter months, and entrance is completely free. Children can choose whatever activities they want to do, regardless of their age, but we do ask adults not to leave them on their own there. Lastly, the glasshouses. A huge amount of work has been done on them to repair the damage following the glasshouse disastrous fire that recently destroyed their western side. At present the glasshouses are open from 10 am to 3 pm Mondays to Thursdays, and it's hoped to extend this to the weekend soon. We're grateful to all those who helped us by contributing their time and money to this achievement.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了黄石公园中灰狼群的重新引入如何帮助山杨树恢复生长,并强调了恢复大型食肉动物对生态系统平衡的重要生态效益。
28. 推理判断题。根据第二段“Gray wolves had disappeared from Yellowstone National Park by 1930 following extensive habitat loss, human hunting and government wolf-killing programs. Without these wolves, populations of deer grew quickly. (由于栖息地大量丧失、人类捕猎和政府的灭狼计划,灰狼在1930年从黄石国家公园消失。没有了这些狼,鹿的数量迅速增长。)”可知,1930年前灰狼尚未消失,那时灰狼和鹿是共存的。故选D项。
29. 词句猜测题。根据第四段“However, while Yellowstone’s aspen are recovering, they aren’t out of the woods just yet. The deer population has declined, but bison (野牛) numbers have increased in recent years. Bison are a lot harder for wolves to take down, said Painter, so increasing numbers of bison may be emerging as a new restriction on aspen in some areas.(然而,尽管黄石公园的山杨正在恢复,但they aren’t out of the woods just yet。鹿的数量有所减少,不过近年来野牛的数量却在增加。潘特(Painter)表示,野牛对狼群来说要难对付得多,因此在部分区域,不断增多的野牛可能正逐渐成为山杨生长的新制约因素。)”可知,“they aren’t out of the woods”指山杨仍面临野牛带来的新威胁,即“无法摆脱生存威胁”。故选B项。
30. 推理判断题。根据最后一段““The paper shows the important ecological benefits occurring from the restoration of wolves to Yellowstone National Park,” Dominick Spracklen, a professor at the University of Leeds, said. “Ecosystems that lack large carnivores (食肉动物) are often increasingly out of balance. While reintroducing carnivores raises important challenges around human-wildlife coexistence, this work brings the significant ecological benefits in the long run.” (利兹大学教授多米尼克・斯普拉克伦(Dominick Spracklen)表示:“该研究论文表明,黄石国家公园重新引入狼群后,产生了重要的生态效益。缺乏大型食肉动物的生态系统,往往会越来越失衡。尽管重新引入食肉动物会给人兽共存带来重大挑战,但从长远来看,这项举措能带来显著的生态效益。”)”可知,斯普拉克伦教授认可食肉动物恢复带来的生态效益,态度是“支持的”。故选A项。
31. 主旨大意题。通读全文特别是第一段“Yellowstone’s wolves are helping a new generation of young aspen (山杨) trees to grow tall and join the forest——the first new generation of such trees in Yellowstone’s northern range in 80 years.(黄石公园的狼群正助力新一代山杨幼苗长得高大,并融入森林 —— 这是80年来黄石公园北部区域首批这样的新一代山杨树。)”
D
【答案】32. B 33. A 34. D 35. A

33. 词句猜测题。根据第三段中的“Then, as bacteria consume the organic materials, electrons (电子) are released and gathered by the cloth, creating electricity.(然后,当细菌消耗有机物质时,电子被释放出来并被布料收集,从而产生电能。)” 故选A项。
34. 推理判断题。根据第四段中的“The team, next, aims to develop further and make it leap into the real world.(接下来,该团队的目标是进一步开发,使其跃入现实世界。)”以及“But He says a more likely, transitional step could be for the filters to first catch on in smaller individual industrial factories that have wastewater to treat.(但他说,更有可能的过渡步骤是,这些滤器首先在有废水需要处理的小型个体工业工厂中流行起来。)”可推知,该团队的下一步可能是在小型车间推广这些滤器。故选D项。
35. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“‘Is it really a waste?’ He asked. ‘Or can we treat it as a resource?’ Viewing wastewater as a resource rather than waste enables sustainable energy generation and promotes environmental protection, presenting a mutually beneficial approach to wastewater treatment.(“这真的是浪费吗?”他问道。“或者我们可以把它当作一种资源吗?”将废水视为资源而非废物,能够实现可持续的能源生产,促进环境保护,为废水处理提供一种互利的方法。)”可推知,何教授在最后一段提出问题是为了强调“废水非废物”的概念。故选A项。

阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
This marks the first time in China's manned space history that another operational spaceship 59 (carry) a different taikonaut crew back to Earth. While 60 (wait) for the rescheduled return, the trio continued scientific experiments with the Shenzhou-21 crew, adding 61 (value) data to their research.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Sensing my hopelessness, Leo didn’t laugh or make a joke.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On the presentation day, we confidently displayed our model.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
