In 2024, Europe experienced very bad weather, including
deadly floods and powerful storms. A new report found these events affected
over 400,000 people across the continent. This happened during Europe’s hottest
year ever recorded. Scientists believe that burning fossil fuels, like coal and oil,
is making our planet warmer, which leads to these extreme weather problems.

There were devastating (毁灭性的) floods in many parts of Europe.
Shocking pictures showed cars being washed away and bridges destroyed by
strong, overflowing rivers. The report stated that 30% of European rivers had
high flood levels. The worst floods hit Central Europe in September and Eastern
Spain in October, causing most of the year’s 335 flooding deaths. Global
warming allows clouds to hold more water, leading to heavier rain and stronger
floods.
Besides floods, Europe also suffered from extreme heat. The year had the
second-highest number of days with dangerous “heat stress”. Southeastern Europe
experienced its longest heatwave ever recorded in July. This intense (强烈的)

heat also helped cause destructive wildfires. These fires burned large areas and
affected about 42,000 people. Huge wildfires in Portugal burned about 110,000
hectares in just one week.
Other changes were also seen. Glaciers(冰川), which are huge masses of
ice, melted faster than ever before in some regions like Scandinavia. The sea
surface temperature in the Mediterranean Sea was also the hottest ever recorded.
Experts warn that we are already feeling the painful effects of climate
change. They stress that we must act faster to reduce pollution from fossil fuels
If the planet keeps getting much hotter, future extreme weather
could be even more devastating.#7

1.What was the main cause of Europe’s extreme weather in 2024 according to
the scientists?( )
D
A.Lack of rain. B.Cold winters.
C.Strong winds. D.Burning fossil fuels.
Scientists believe that burning
fossil fuels, like coal and oil, is making our planet warmer, which
leads to these extreme weather problems.”

2.Which of the following was NOT mentioned as a result of the extreme
weather?( )
C
A.Devastating floods. B.Destructive wildfires.
C.Powerful earthquakes. D.Faster melting glaciers.

3.How much of European rivers had high flood levels in 2024?( )
C
A.About one fifth. B.About a half.
C.About one third. D.About two thirds.
The report stated that 30% of
European rivers had high flood levels.”

4.Which conclusion is best supported by the data in the passage?( )
C
A.Wildfires caused more deaths than floods in 2024.
B.Scandinavia’s glaciers grew larger due to the heavy rain.
C.Rising temperatures worsened both floods and heatwaves.
D.Southern Europe had fewer floods because of its hot climate.
