第二节(满分25分)
After dinner, the Acharyas kindly invited Amy to the backyard. Curious, Amy followed the couple. To her amazement, the garden was softly lit with fairy lights, and a small table was set with a beautiful cake and colorful balloons. “Happy birthday, Amy!” the couple cheered together, smiling warmly. “We know it can be really hard to be away from your family on special days, and we hope that this surprise can make you feel better,” added Mrs Acharya. Greatly touched, Amy hugged the couple tightly in tears and expressed her sincere thankfulness. At that heartfelt moment, Amy realized she had found a second home.
Paragraph 2:
After he celebration, the Acharyas drove Amy to a nearby ice cream shop. There, they treated Amy to her favourite strawberry ice cream. “Your father mentioned your birthday tradition,” they explained. Amy was deeply moved and felt more relaxed. As she sat down to enjoy the treat, Mrs Acharya handed her a phone. Unexpectedly, her family appeared on a video call, smiling and waving. Both families chatted warmly, sharing stories and laughter. Amy’s parents thanked the Acharyas for their kindness and consideration. That wonderful day made Amy understand that home isn’t just a place—it is where love and care follow you all around.

(over his shoulder again and saw a smaller boy walking towards him.
The boy pulled out the chair next to Jonah and sat down."I'm Henry. Why are you reading here when you
could be playing with your friends instead?"asked he."Uh..."Jonah looked around the library, avoiding Henry's
gaze ()He did not want Henry to know the real reason why he was in the library. What would Henry think of
him ifhe knew Jonah did not have any friends? This made Jonah feel more uncomfortable.
As Jonah turned the page,he realized Henry was still sitting there, watching him steadily.
"I know how you feel.Just say hello to someone today,"Henry encouraged Jonah."I promise they'll respond.
Once you've made the first move,it just gets easier."

dropped out ofhis pencil case.Jonah remembered what Henry had advised him to do.

My granddad often helped me make a tool to catch fish when I was young and we would spend hours along a
river. It was lovely for both ofus then. Many more of today's grandparents have a growing sense of adventure.
And a trend is catching on:skip-gen travel-grandparents taking fun-filled vacations with grandkids without their
parents along.
a survey found that 83%of grandparents put travel with their grandkids as the number one thing when they
retire.Skip-gen travel gets popular for good reason.Kids have their lives enriched and leam outside classrooms.
This is also a time oftalking and sharing ideas.
"How grandparents talk to children is different from how parents talk to them.Actually,I feel on a more
equal footing with my grandchildren than I do with my own children,"Annie Collins,a travel architect and also
part of the trend, says."Kids away from their parents are more open to ideas and willing to express themselves.
It's not just kids gaining from travelling.Who gets the most out of this? You might think it's them but it's us."
According to a study by the Cleveland Clinic, grandparents who help watch and spend time with grandkids may
actually live longer than their peers.
It's also important to recognise that grandparents often have more time to travel.Unlike their children, who
may still be in the pursuit of a personal career that offers limited time off, grandparents are often retired and likely
have a different viewpoint on life, prioritising experiences and family. So knowing the kids are in great hands,
mums and dads will have a bit oftime to themselves-some much-needed leisure time alone to rest and recharge
their batteries.
However,skip-gen travel is not for every grandparent. After all, grandparents are worn out with years and not
so energetic. They surely treasure the chance to form close ties with their grandchildren, but it's wiser to say no
when only the youth could enjoy themselves, for the travel should be a win for everyone involved.
28.Why does the author mention fishing experiences with his granddad?
A.To stress the importance offamily ties.
B.To share the pleasure in going fishing
C.To lead in the trend ofskip-gen travel.
D.To show the growing interest in adventure
29.Which ofthe following may Annie Collins agree with?
A.Many parents are too strict with children.
B.Grandparents benefit more from skip-gen travel
C.Spending time with grandparents is better for kids.
D.Children become mature when away from parents.
30.What do we know about the parents whose kids are on skip-gen travel?
A.They miss their kids very much.
B.They feel less anxious and stressed.
C.They enjoy the moment to relax
D.They look forward to their own trip.
31.What does the author suggest grandparents do?
A.Get kids involved in travel planning
B.Make decisions in both sides'interests
C.Reduce skip-gen travel appropriately.
D.Strengthen the bond with grandchildren.

Let's face it-most ofus can't resist a cup of tea or coffee sometimes.They're a perfect pick-me-up and
comforter. But there are alternative drinks,so why have we chosen these as our go-to drinks to soothe our busy
lives?And which one is superior?
Let's start with tea-it's the second most consumed drink in the world. For many-especially the British-
having a "cuppa"is a daily practice. The caffeine contained in it helps wake you up in the morning, and
throughout the day we'll make a tea to distract us from our work. And according to some scientists, habitual tea
consumption can have some health benefits.Andrew Steptoe,a professor from University College London's
Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, told BBC Food that drinking black tea"may speed up recovery
from the daily stresses in life, but we do not know what ingredients oftea were responsible for these effects on
stress recovery and relaxation".
Coffee is tea's "trendier"rival ()Its popularity has grown over the years, and this is reflected in the
number of coffee shops we see around-places to hang out,do business or catch up with friends.Coffee can taste
great and can be served in many ways, but it's sometimes how you have it that can be seen as a status symbol or
the preserve of hipsters ()Of course,it gives you a strong caffeine hit-roughly double ofthat contained in
tea. However, too much can lead to anxiety.Sleep scientist Matt Walker told the BBC that caffeine can decrease
the amount ofrestorative deep sleep you have.
But some scientists say drinking coffee and green tea can also be good for us.Researchers at Osaka
University linked drinking a daily cup of coffee with a lower risk of death among both stroke survivors and
healthy people, while drinking seven or more cups of green tea was associated with a lower risk of death among
both heart attack and stroke survivors. So,whether we turn to coffee or tea for its taste, its image or as a lifesty le
choice.it could be a lifesaver!
32.What does the underlined word"soothe"in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Change.
B.Describe.
C.Relieve.
D.Copy.
33.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2
A.Tea is the most consumed drink in the world.
B.The caffeine in tea can cure people ofillness.
C.Tea helps promote our careers and friendship.
D.Certain ingredients oftea help people forget trouble.
34.What is Matt Walker's opinion about drinking coffee?
A.Too much coffee is not good for sleep.
B.Coffee is surely more popular than tea.
C.Black tea speeds up recovery from the daily stresses.
D.Drinking a daily cup of coffee guarantees a long life.
35.In which section can you read the passage on a magazine website?
A.Technology.
B.Entertainment.
C.Business.
D.Health.

others, express what you really mean, and build better relationships.
Silence offers sympathy for others
There are times in life when silence offers sympathy and understanding to others.Sometimes we simply
don't have the right words to communicate to someone who is struggling with a hurtful or painful situation. But
we can still show them that we care and we are there for them.39
Silence is polite
40 They may be radio broadcasts, news channels, stores and the constant chatter ofpeople around
us.So when we do get the chance to talk,we usually feel like we have to fill every thought into a short period of
time. However, when we are silent,we give others a chance to speak. We show them that they matter.
A.The silence often leaves the other person puzzled.
B.In fact,we can offer comfort by our calming silence.
C.To comfort them, you may tell them a similar painful situation
D.More often than not,the other person would get the answer from our silence.
E.Our facial expressions, eye contact, and even tone ofvoice speak the loudest.
F.We live in a society where we are fighting with so many sources ofinformation
G.All of a sudden, you pay attention and wonder why communication has stopped.

Amy had been living with Mr and Mrs Acharya for over six months. They were a retired couple who had
taken her in as a paying guest while she began her first year of engineering college in a new city.Despite being
away from her own family for the first time ever, she felt at home with the Acharyas'warmth and kindness.
9
Mr Acharya,a retired engineer,had greatly supported Amy's studies.He often reviewed her notes,offered
advice and patiently explained difficult topics to her.His friendly nature and guidance made her educational
journey smoother and more enjoyable.
However, today was different. It was Amy's birthday, yet being so far away from her family made her feel
very low.The care the Acharyas offered her was comforting, but she felt an emptiness only her beloved family
members could fill on this special day.She sat quietly in the living room, where Mr Acharya was reading a book.
And Mrs Acharya was busy in the kitchen.Amy didn't mention that it was her birthday, for she didn't want to
trouble them.Instead, she just sighed softly, looking at the family photos on her phone.
Mrs Acharya looked at her knowingly from the kitchen but said nothing. She and her husband had actually
marked this special date in their calendar months ago, when they first saw it on Amy's college admission papers.
They had been quietly planning a surprise for days.
During dinner, the elderly couple chatted about everyday matters as usual. The meal was delicious, with
some of Amy's favorite dishes which Mrs Acharya had specially prepared.Still,Amy couldn't help but feel sad.
She tried to focus on the conversation and enjoy the food, but her thoughts kept returning to her family. She kept
checking her silent phone, wondering why her parents hadn't called or sent messages to wish her a happy birthday.
She thought about how, every year on her birthday, her mother cooked her favourite meal and her father took her
on a lovely drive and treated her to her favourite strawberry ice cream.
After dinner, the Acharyas kindly invited Amy to the backyard.
After the celebration, the Acharyas drove Amy to a nearby ice cream shop.

The bell for lunch rang at Glendale Primary School. However, instead of heading to the canteen like all the other children did, Jonah, a new student at the school, went to the library. Other than the noise of the air-conditioner, the library was quiet and there was barely a soul in sight. Far in a corner, he spotted Mrs. Lim, the librarian, who was too busy shelving some books to pay any attention to him. The library was near to the canteen.

Jonah could hear children laughing and chatting. He wished he was outside playing with some friends but he did not let this bother him.
Suddenly, Jonah heard a sound in the corner. He looked around and saw a pair of eyes looking at him from behind the bookshelves. Jonah turned back, eyes as wide as saucers (茶碟). “Oh dear!” he whispered. He peeked (窥视) over his shoulder again and saw a smaller boy walking towards him.
The boy pulled out the chair next to Jonah and sat down. “I’m Henry. Why are you reading here when you could be playing with your friends instead?” asked he. “Uh.. . ” Jonah looked around the library, avoiding Henry’s gaze (注视). He did not want Henry to know the real reason why he was in the library. What would Henry think of him if he knew Jonah did not have any friends? This made Jonah feel more uncomfortable.
As Jonah turned the page, he realized Henry was still sitting there, watching him steadily.
“I know how you feel. Just say hello to someone today,” Henry encouraged Jonah. “I promise they’ll respond. Once you’ve made the first move, it just gets easier. ”
Jonah appreciated the advice and thanked him before making his way out of the library. In the hallway outside the library, a boy from Jonah’s class was crouched on the floor, picking up pens and pencils that had dropped out of his pencil case. Jonah remembered what Henry had advised him to do.

My granddad often helped me make a tool to catch fish when I was young and we would spend hours along a river. It was lovely for both of us then. Many more of today’s grandparents have a growing sense of adventure. And a trend is catching on: skip-gen travel—grandparents taking fun-filled vacations with grandkids without their parents along.
A survey found that 83% of grandparents put travel with their grandkids as the number one thing when they retire. Skip-gen travel gets popular for good reason. Kids have their lives enriched and learn outside classrooms. This is also a time of talking and sharing ideas.
“How grandparents talk to children is different from how parents talk to them. Actually, I feel on a more equal footing with my grandchildren than I do with my own children,” Annie Collins, a travel architect and also part of the trend, says. “Kids away from their parents are more open to ideas and willing to express themselves.
It’s not just kids gaining from travelling. Who gets the most out of this? You might think it’s them but it’s us.” According to a study by the Cleveland Clinic, grandparents who help watch and spend time with grandkids may actually live longer than their peers.
It’s also important to recognise that grandparents often have more time to travel. Unlike their children, who may still be in the pursuit of a personal career that offers limited time off, grandparents are often retired and likely have a different viewpoint on life, prioritising experiences and family. So knowing the kids are in great hands, mums and dads will have a bit oftime to themselves—some much-needed leisure time alone to rest and recharge their batteries.
However, skip-gen travel is not for every grandparent. After all, grandparents are worn out with years and not so energetic. They surely treasure the chance to form close ties with their grandchildren, but it’s wiser to say no when only the youth could enjoy themselves, for the travel should be a win for everyone involved.
28. Why does the author mention fishing experiences with his granddad?
A. To stress the importance of family ties. B. To share the pleasure in going fishing.
C. To lead in the trend of skip-gen travel. D. To show the growing interest in adventure.
29. Which of the following may Annie Collins agree with?
A. Many parents are too strict with children.
B. Grandparents benefit more from skip-gen travel.
C. Spending time with grandparents is better for kids.
D. Children become mature when away from parents.
30. What do we know about the parents whose kids are on skip-gen travel?
A. They miss their kids very much. B. They feel less anxious and stressed.
C. They enjoy the moment to relax. D. They look forward to their own trip.
31. What does the author suggest grandparents do?
A. Get kids involved in travel planning. B. Make decisions in both sides ’ interests.
C. Reduce skip-gen travel appropriately. D. Strengthen the bond with grandchildren.

Let’s face it—most of us can’t resist a cup of tea or coffee sometimes . They’re a perfect pick-me-up and comforter. But there are alternative drinks, so why have we chosen these as our go-to drinks to soothe our busy lives? And which one is superior?
Let’s start with tea—it’s the second most consumed drink in the world. For many—especially the British— having a “cuppa ” is a daily practice . The caffeine contained in it helps wake you up in the morning , and throughout the day we’ll make a tea to distract us from our work. And according to some scientists, habitual tea consumption can have some health benefits . Andrew Steptoe , a professor from University College London’s Department of Epidemiology and Public Health , told BBC Food that drinking black tea “may speed up recovery from the daily stresses in life, but we do not know what ingredients of tea were responsible for these effects on stress recovery and relaxation” .
Coffee is tea’s “trendier” rival (对手). Its popularity has grown over the years, and this is reflected in the number of coffee shops we see around—places to hang out, do business or catch up with friends . Coffee can taste great and can be served in many ways , but it’s sometimes how you have it that can be seen as a status symbol or the preserve of hipsters (潮人). Of course, it gives you a strong caffeine hit—roughly double of that contained in tea. However, too much can lead to anxiety. Sleep scientist Matt Walker told the BBC that caffeine can decrease the amount of restorative deep sleep you have.
But some scientists say drinking coffee and green tea can also be good for us . Researchers at Osaka University linked drinking a daily cup of coffee with a lower risk of death among both stroke survivors and healthy people, while drinking seven or more cups of green tea was associated with a lower risk of death among both heart attack and stroke survivors. So, whether we turn to coffee or tea for its taste, its image or as a lifestyle choice, it could be a lifesaver!
32. What does the underlined word “ soothe” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Change. B. Describe. C. Relieve. D. Copy.
33.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2 ?
A. Tea is the most consumed drink in the world.
B. The caffeine in tea can cure people of illness.
C. Tea helps promote our careers and friendship.
D. Certain ingredients of tea help people forget trouble.
34. What is Matt Walker ’s opinion about drinking coffee?
A. Too much coffee is not good for sleep.
B. Coffee is surely more popular than tea.
C. Black tea speeds up recovery from the daily stresses.
D. Drinking a daily cup of coffee guarantees a long life.
35. In which section can you read the passage on a magazine website?
A. Technology. B. Entertainment. C. Business. D. Health.

When we answer questions with silence, it is often very powerful indeed. 36 For some people, silence comes naturally. But there are quite a few of us who need to learn the art of practicing silence. Read on for more reasons to try silence in your daily communications.
Silence gets people’s attention
If you have ever been in a classroom, you have most likely experienced how silence often gets everyone’s attention. When the teacher stops talking, a signal goes to the brain that something has happened. 37 The same is true in our daily conversations. Ifwe fall silent, people will notice it and we gain their attention.
Silence uses body language
Often our body language is a more powerful way of communicating than what comes out of our mouth.
38 The ability to understand and use body language is a powerful tool that can help you connect with others, express what you really mean, and build better relationships.
Silence offers sympathy for others
There are times in life when silence offers sympathy and understanding to others . Sometimes we simply don’t have the right words to communicate to someone who is struggling with a hurtful or painful situation. But we can still show them that we care and we are there for them. 39
Silence is polite
40 They may be radio broadcasts, news channels, stores and the constant chatter of people around us. So when we do get the chance to talk, we usually feel like we have to fill every thought into a short period of time. However, when we are silent, we give others a chance to speak. We show them that they matter.
A. The silence often leaves the other person puzzled.
B. In fact, we can offer comfort by our calming silence.
C. To comfort them, you may tell them a similar painful situation.
D. More often than not, the other person would get the answer from our silence.
E. Our facial expressions, eye contact, and even tone of voice speak the loudest.
F. We live in a society where we are fighting with so many sources of information.
G. All of a sudden, you pay attention and wonder why communication has stopped.

Mr Acharya, a retired engineer, had greatly supported Amy’s studies . He often reviewed her notes, offered advice and patiently explained difficult topics to her . His friendly nature and guidance made her educational journey smoother and more enjoyable.
However, today was different. It was Amy’s birthday, yet being so far away from her family made her feel very low . The care the Acharyas offered her was comforting, but she felt an emptiness only her beloved family members could fill on this special day. She sat quietly in the living room, where Mr Acharya was reading a book. And Mrs Acharya was busy in the kitchen . Amy didn’t mention that it was her birthday, for she didn’t want to trouble them . Instead, she just sighed softly, looking at the family photos on her phone.
Mrs Acharya looked at her knowingly from the kitchen but said nothing. She and her husband had actually marked this special date in their calendar months ago, when they first saw it on Amy’s college admission papers. They had been quietly planning a surprise for days.
During dinner, the elderly couple chatted about everyday matters as usual. The meal was delicious, with some of Amy’s favorite dishes which Mrs Acharya had specially prepared. Still, Amy couldn’t help but feel sad. She tried to focus on the conversation and enjoy the food, but her thoughts kept returning to her family. She kept checking her silent phone, wondering why her parents hadn’t called or sent messages to wish her a happy birthday. She thought about how, every year on her birthday, her mother cooked her favourite meal and her father took her on a lovely drive and treated her to her favourite strawberry ice cream.
After dinner, the Acharyas kindly invited Amy to the backyard.
After the celebration, the Acharyas drove Amy to a nearby ice cream shop.
