The sports meet took place on Saturday. Hundreds of runners and audience were on my high school campus for this huge meet. If I ran a qualifying time in this meet, I could go to Districts for a higher level race. Maybe it would be called a miracle, but that’s my dream.
I warmed up, stretched, ran a few laps. And I also drank plenty of liquid so I wouldn’t dehydrate(脱水). No one told me I should not have been drinking iced tea.
BANG! The gun sounded and off I ran around the track. I had a good start, and about six girls were before me. I began to move up in the pack. The first lap went well. My pace was great. Then to my horror, I realized too late I should have visited the restroom before the race began.
A painful and involuntary press took hold of my bladder (膀胱) and slowly began squeezing it. I imagined my bladder growing smaller and smaller, while its contents increased in volume. Pain shot through me with every pounding step I ran. And then the dam broke. Whispers of pain escaped my lips, and tears started flowing down my face. Somehow I managed to keep running despite my pain and embarrassment, knowing that as soon as I finished I could disappear and minimize my embarrassment further.
I passed people. Fifth, fourth, then third. Suddenly I found myself in second place! But I just wanted to get off that track as soon as possible. I had to go to the restroom first!

Passage 2
(2024-2025学年高二上学期·福建省莆田第一中学·期末)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.
One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, “I don’t have any special skills to share.”
Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn’t shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. “How about singing together in the talent show?” She grinned, “I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can’t help following you here.” Gosh, I couldn’t believe my ears. Emma, with personality and popularity, acknowledged my little talent. Since Emma had the world’s prettiest voice, I felt like being favoured by fortune.
“You two? The talent show for the food bank?” My mum bent towards us and her face lit up. “A big occasion.” Then a light bulb seemed to go in her head. “Why not practise right now upstairs? I bet you’ll be a perfect match.” Winking at us, she seemed to know we were thinking alike.
Emma and I embarked on rehearsing almost every single day after school. We brainstormed, exchanged ideas and rehearsed the scene. As the days rolled by, I was feeling pretty good about our act. But the day before the performance, Emma called that she had an acute stomachache and was not in any shape to perform.

Passage 3
(2024-2025学年高二上学期·福建省莆田市第十五中学·期末)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was eleven years old, I moved to Tampa, Florida. My parents traveled for a living, so Aunt Emily took care of me while they were away. One rainy morning, there was an old lady who was dressed in a bright orange coat carrying a rubbish bag and a stick. “What’s that old lady doing?” I asked Emily, pointing out the window to the street in front of the house.
Hearing my question, Emily answered, “She’s picking up rubbish around here for fun.” “Oh,” I answered. “Interesting… Why would someone think picking up rubbish was fun?” For a long time, often saw that old lady—rain or shine—on my way to school. In the beginning, I thought she was crazy to pick up rubbish. However, I finally smiled and waved at her each time I saw her.
Later, when I moved to college, I’d see rubbish in the grass and feel really angry about it. I’d think, “Why isn’t anyone picking up rubbish? People are so unconcerned!” But shortly after that, I said to myself, “Why do I think picking up rubbish is someone else’s duty?” And I couldn’t walk past trash without feeling guilty (内疚的).
So while walking in the college, I began picking up rubbish and made sure the campus was in better shape than I previously found it. My behavior influenced some students. They started to help out.
Like me, they also picked up rubbish whenever they noticed it. And our college became more beautiful. Seeing it, I began to think, “If I could pick up rubbish outside the college—in other places of the town, it may make a big difference to the town.”
But picking up rubbish in front of many people outside the college needs courage. It could be embarrassing. But it was the right thing to do. I decided to try it.

Passage 1
(2024-2025学年高二上学期·福建省泉州市·期末)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Every evening, after finishing his homework or playing with his toys, 10-year-old Gail would throw everything into one place — the space under his bed. It was easy and quick, and before long, he forgot about it all. But as time passed, the mess under his bed grew into a mountain. Clothes, books, broken toys, and forgotten snacks had all found their way to his secret hiding spot.
One evening, his mom called from downstairs. “Gail, can you come down here, please?” Gail sighed. He knew what was coming. His mom had asked him countless times to clean his room, but he always promised he’d do it later. Now, he couldn’t ignore it anymore. When he walked into the living room, his mom gave him that look — the one that told him he was in trouble.
“Gail,” she began, “your room is getting out of control. I know it’s easy to just stuff things under the bed, but you’re not organising anything. You’re hiding the mess.”
Gail frowned (皱眉). “But Mom, I don’t know where to put it all. If I clean it up, it’ll just get messy again.”
His mom’s face softened. “I understand. But when you keep everything hidden, you can’t find what you really need. You end up feeling more frustrated (沮丧的), and the mess keeps growing.”
Just then, Grandma Rose, who had been visiting for the day, walked in. She had a warm smile on her face and a twinkle in her eye. “I hear someone needs a little help with organising,” she said, sitting down beside Gail.
Gail nodded, looking down at his hands. “I don’t know how to keep it tidy. It feels like too much work.”
Grandma smiled gently. “Well, when I was young, I used to put my things in piles (堆), much like you do now. But one day, I realised something: my things weren’t helping me when they were just piled up. They were getting in the way of what I wanted to do. So, I decided to find a better way.”

It was a beautiful sunny morning. Tom, a young and energetic boy, was excited to ride his bicycle to the park. He had planned to meet his friends there and spend a fun day exploring and playing games.
Tom got on his beloved bicycle. It was a gift from his parents on his last birthday, a shiny blue color with a comfortable seat and smooth tires (轮胎). He pedaled with all his might, enjoying the freedom and joy that only a bicycle ride could bring. Suddenly he heard a strange sound coming from the wheels. At first, he thought it was just a small pebble (砾石) stuck in the tire, but then the noise became louder and louder, and the bicycle started to shake uncontrollably.
Before Tom could figure out what was happening, there was a loud noise, and the bicycle came to a sudden stop. Tom was thrown forward, barely managing to catch himself before hitting the ground. He got up, dusted himself off, and looked at his bicycle with a frown (皱眉). The chain had come off, and one of the tires was completely flat. “Oh no!” Tom cried out. “What am I going to do now?” He tried to put the chain back on, but it was too difficult without the right tools. He was frustrated and worried that he wouldn’t be able to make it to the park to meet his friends.
Just as Tom was standing there helplessly, an old man walked by, who had a kind face and a gentle smile. He noticed Tom’s suffering and asked, “What’s wrong, boy?” Tom explained his situation to the old man, showing him his broken bicycle. The old man nodded understandingly and said, “Don’t worry! I was a mechanic in my younger days. I might be able to help you.” After checking the bike skillfully, he comforted Tom, “Just wait a moment and your bike will be as good as new.”

Passage 2
(2024-2025学年高二上学期·福建省龙岩市·期末)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The city circle was quiet when my van (面包车) pulled up to Two’s Company cafe. It was 8:00 a.m.. As the film crew of student moviemakers hopped out of the van and started unloading a ton of equipment, I sat in the driver’s seat reading a book.
Sometimes, it made me feel a bit sad that I was not wanted or needed on the set. These kids used to need a parent’s advice, help and caring. Now, as older teens, they were making their own decisions, helping each other and supporting their friends through whatever assignments they were given. I was just the driver. Anything else that I might be able to impress on them was not required and, I dare say, unwelcome.
With all the equipment unloaded, the van now became the snack mobile and place to leave personal items. My job, as the driver, was to stay within calling distance with the keys when necessary.
To finish reading the book, I got out looking for a place to sit down. It was early, but I didn’t want to sit in the sun. Against a wall, in the shade, just twenty or so faces away, I spied a beautifully carved park bench. I noticed that a man was sitting on one end, but there was plenty of room for at least two more bodies. Walking over, I set my drink on the ground near the leg of the bench and sat on the end seat so that I could rest my hand on the arm.
The man on the other end looked at me oddly but remained seated. I quickly discovered that he’d probably spent the night on the bench. His clothes were untidy, his hair was messy, and I could smell something unpleasant. I looked at him and smiled, and he smiled back with a mouth of misshapen and blacked-out teeth. That was it. He wasn’t bothering me, and I thought I wasn’t bothering him.
We both sat there for over an hour. I was reading. He was intently watching the filming. He then stood, walked in front of me and bowed. I looked up, not knowing what was going to happen next. In a slightly shake but clear voice, he said, “Thank you.”

Passage 3
(2024-2025学年高二上学期·福建省莆田市第二十五中学·期末)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last Saturday, David was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about eight years old. When David passed them, he heard the woman yell. “How stupid you are! You’re good at nothing.” David stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
David was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Brown in middle school. After he entered a middle school, David lacked self-confidence because he was often made fun of by others. He was often told that he was good at nothing, which David behaved. But one day it all changed.
One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Brown asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading it. A few days later, David handed in his story. He didn’t give it much thought. But the next day, to his surprise, the comment “well done” from Mrs Brown came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When David read that, he almost burst into tears. He never expected to be praised one day. He suddenly gained some self-confidence.
That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Brown the next morning. And again he was praised. David became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Brown to read them improve writing skills. One year later, David joined the school newspaper and became an editor of it. He was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence, and was hopeful about his future.
He succeeded in entering a college and kept writing. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published. With some more books coming out, he became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Brown’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.

Teenage girl, Nancy Hardson was the cherished daughter of the Hardsons, Tom and Mary, who, though not wealthy, were honest and hardworking. Tom worked as an accountant, while Mary was a cashier at a local supermarket. Despite their modest income, they stressed in family the values of integrity, perseverance, and a love for learning.
Nancy was a bright and talented girl with a particular passion for writing. She loved to weave stories and express her thoughts through words. One day, Nancy met with an advertisement for The Scholastic Workshop, a renowned (有名的) student writing camp with a wide range of categories, including writing techniques, taking seminars on essay improvement, meeting published writers, and a writing contest, with the biggest prize being 1,000 dollars.
The thought of participating filled Nancy with both excitement and worry. She knew she had the talent, but the fear of failure discouraged her. Nancy’s teacher, Mr. White, knew well about her talent in writing and encouraged her to pursue her dream. He also knew clearly what the girl was worried about. He decided to have a heart-to-heart conversation with her. “Nancy,” Mr. White said genuinely, “there might be problems, but your writing is a gift, and you should share it with the world.”
Nancy’s eyes welled up with tears. “But what if I fail? What if they laugh at me?” Mr. White placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. “Failure is a part of life, Nancy. It’s how we learn and grow. And even if they laugh, remember that your words have the power to touch hearts and change minds.”
Back home, Nancy told her parents about the program and gained their support, with which Nancy was a little more relieved. She registered for the workshop as required and got admitted successfully. Thrilled and nervous, she went to the workshop managed by the Rockerfeller University.

Passage 2
(2024-2025学年高二上学期·福建仙游第一中学·期末)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was a misty October morning. The abandoned garden behind the old downtown library looked like a hidden realm forgotten by time. As I pushed aside a clump of knee-high green foxtail grass, a faded wooden sign emerged from among the vines. Beneath the sign, half-buried in fallen leaves, a glass jar glowed faintly, stuffed with square-folded letters — red, blue, and yellowed ones — like a bunch of dried colorful flowers.
I squatted down and gently pulled out the top one. On the off-white letter paper, there were scribbly words written in pencil: “March 17th. Huihui ran away from the balcony. It has a black spot on its right ear. If you see it, tell it that its mom misses it very much.” I pulled out another one, a printed note: “Last Wednesday in the third-floor reading room, to the boy in the blue shirt — I didn’t dare to say happy birthday to you. Actually, I’ve noticed you for a long time.”
When I turned around, I saw a girl in a light blue school uniform walking out of the mist. “My name is Lin Yue. This is my secret base,” she said, pointing at the glass jar.
“The first time I came here last autumn, there were only three broken flowerpots,” she added. “The doctor said I was always anxious, so I might as well write down my thoughts. Later, I realized that many people have things they can’t say out loud.” No sooner had she finished speaking than a strong wind suddenly rushed in through the archway, like an invisible hand tipping over the glass jar — and the letters scrambled to jump out. Some twirled past the wild chrysanthemum bushes, some stuck to the damp stone walls, and the thinnest ones even drifted toward the library’s red brick wall.
Lin Yue let out a cry and lunged forward, her canvas shoes slipping on the wet flagstones. I quickly grabbed her arm. The two of us rushed around in a fluster, chasing the fleeing letters. Her hairpin fell into the bramble thicket, and my cuffs got stained with grass juice. When I caught the pink letter with “I’m sorry” written on it, I noticed a lopsided smiling face drawn on the back. At that moment, I suddenly realized that this was a secret garden collecting people’s innermost thoughts.

Armed with two over-packed suitcases,we arrived at the airport just in time for my flight. “Well, here we are, the airport,” my sister said with a sigh. As I watched her unload my luggage, I could see the sadness in her eyes. This was not easy on her either. We had both been dreading (害怕) this moment for the past week. One last hug and a final good-bye and I would be on my way to a new life abroad, leaving my beloved sister behind.
All my life I had loved airports. To me they were some kind of magic gateway to the world,a place from which to start great holidays and adventures. But today it seemed like a cold and heartless place. I looked at my sister and even though her eyes were filled with tears, she was trying to keep a brave face. “You’d better go or you’ll miss your flight,” she said.
“I’ll miss you,” I replied, and with those last words I was off. As promised, I did not look back, but by the time I reached the customs office I was sobbing (啜泣). “Cheer up, love,” the tall customs officer said with a smile. “It’s not the end of the world, you know.” But to me it was the end of the world, as I had known it.
While boarding the plane I was still crying. I did not have the energy to put my bag in the overhead locker, so I stuffed it on the empty seat next to mine. As I settled into my chair, a feeling of sadness overwhelmed me. I felt like my best friend had just been taken away from me.
Growing up, my sister and I would do everything together. Born barely fifteen months apart we not only looked alike, we were alike. Whenever one of us need something, the other one would come along. When the time came for us to go to college, we also went together. But now that our college days were over and I was off to a foreign country, all I had left were my memories.

Only Love Lasts Forever
Yesterday, after telling my brother, Rhys, and me to stop playing like wild animals in the house for what she said was the thousandth time, Mom went to take a bath. That’s when it happened. We were playing around, fighting each other with pillows, when one slipped from my brother’s grasp and smashed the glass vase on the coffee table, breaking it into pieces!
With her sharp hearing, my mom heard the tremendous crash and then the sound of glass hitting the floor. Wasting no time, she came flying into the room to find out what had happened. I was sure my brother and I were dead meat (死定了) and she was going to start shouting at us, but instead she just knelt by the pieces and began to cry.
This made Rhys and me feel pretty awful. We went over and put our arms around her, and she explained to us why she was so upset. Under the broken glass vase was a white porcelain rose. Dad had given it to her on their first wedding anniversary. It was like their love - it would last a lifetime.
Now it lay chipped (缺口) on the floor, one petal (花瓣) gone. We began crying, too, and offered to glue it for her. She said that wouldn’t really fix it. Now that it had been broken, the value of the “limited edition” had lessened. We got our piggy banks out to pay for it, but Mom replied that to her the rose represented Dad’s love and could never truly be restored.
As Mom slowly began to pick up the mess, we tried everything we could think of to cheer her up, but even our best funny faces didn’t work. Mom just looked elsewhere. The tears kept coming down her cheeks as we joined in cleaning up the mess. Finally, everything was picked up.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My mother believed in using things up. Last year, our cornfield had a bad harvest because birds feasted on the crops. It was probably then that Mom’s frugality(节俭)became even more extraordinary. She began keeping everything that seemed useless in the attic(阁楼)—worn-out clothes, old sheets, broken umbrellas, and some other old items. Mom’s favorite saying was “waste not, want not”(俭以防匮). My brother Josh and I weren’t sure what that meant until the “Affair of the Scarecrow(稻草人)”, which, as it later became known, left a lasting impression on us.
The story began with a pretty hat that Mom received as a gift to protect her from the sun. However, Josh and I could see that Mom’s frugal nature and fashion sense were in battle. Mom really didn’t want to get rid of the hat—it was new and had a lot of use left in it—but neither could she stand wearing it. She tried to take off the fancy decorations, but they were stuck on tight. She’d have to find some other solution.
Josh and I watched as Mom headed upstairs to the attic with the hat. “Waste not, want not,” she called back down. We heard boxes being moved around. Moments later, Mom leaned out, holding a flour bag full of straw, and with a mysterious smile, she placed the hat on it.
“What is that for?” I asked, confused. “A scarecrow! ” Mom exclaimed. “But not a good one yet.It needs a strong body to stand firm in the field,” she said with a frown. “And it doesn’t look scary enough,” Josh remarked. I had to admit that Josh, though younger than I was, could sometimes be more imaginative. Josh and I turned to each other, searching for a good idea. Soon enough, Josh’s eyes lit up with inspiration.

Passage 1
(2024-2025学年高二上学期·福建省宁德市·期末)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Late at night, the hospital was as quiet as a library. The soft hum of fluorescent lights (荧光灯) and the rhythmic beep of medical equipment created a quiet atmosphere. Nurses moved silently from room to room, attending to their patients with gentle care. But suddenly, a wild wolf burst through the doors, breaking the silence. The hallways, usually filled with soft talking and the beep-beep of machines, were now full of scared noises. People couldn’t believe their eyes as the wolf turned their safe place into a mess.
Katie, a brave nurse, was there too. She’s always calm in tough times, but even she was surprised to see a wolf in the hospital. While everyone else ran away, Katie stood still. Her heart was beating really fast, and her hands were shaking. She was so confused!
But then, Katie saw something strange. The wolf had something in its mouth - it looked like a tiny animal. This was very odd for a wolf. Katie’s curiosity made her forget her fear. She really wanted to know what was happening and how she could help.
As soon as people saw the wolf, the hospital’s security team jumped into action. They told everyone to leave the building calmly. “Go to the nearest exit, please!” they said loudly, but in a way that made people feel safe. They moved fast, helping everyone get out of the building without taking any risks. “Stay together and follow me!” they told the crowd, making sure nobody got lost.
Katie felt her heart beating even faster than before. The sight of the wolf made her want to find out why and help them. It was a very unusual situation, and she knew she had to do something.

Passage 2
(2024-2025学年高二上学期·福建省厦门大学附属科技中学·期末)
阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
Artificial intelligence is transforming medicine, making health care more accurate and less expensive for everyone.
AI is new, yet it is already promising to help detect cancer at earlier stages, making it easier to treat. For example, in cancer checks, a 2024 review of studies found that screening skin cancer aided by AI was more accurate. Another review found similar results for lung cancer screenings, while also showing that Al reduced the workload of doctors by 68 percent. Also, AI can speed up care in emergency settings. One study found that hospitals using AI to detect strokes (中风) from a patient’s brain images were able to save almost 40 minutes before a surgeon could intervene. That’s precious time that can save lives.
AI’s greatest prospect is its potential to boost medical research. For instance, AlphaFold2, an AI program developed by Google DeepMind, has started to figure out how proteins take their specific shapes, a question that has puzzled scientists for decades. In the past, understanding this took years of painstaking work. Machine learning is reducing that time a lot. Such research power could find clues to treatments for an enormous variety of diseases.
However, the challenge with all these exciting developments is that AI technology can be expensive to use. It also requires a lot of energy, which will put pressure on the power network and might make climate change faster if it gets energy from dirty sources.
The rise of AI has caused a lot of worry in recent years. Its incredible power deserves care but not fear. People can take comfort in the fact that, in medicine, this bit of human creativity has been good — and will probably continue to be.

Passage 1

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】
The finish line came in sight. I began to count the remaining meters I had to run. I just wanted to get off that track. Normally, when you finish your event, you immediately turned your mind to the results. Not me! I used my last bit of strength to dash across the finish line, off the track, and right into the bathroom. I buried my face with my hands and cried bitterly, feeling my face burning with shame. After that I went back to the field, waiting for the result. (84)
After what seemed a long time, the results were announced. I could hardly believe my ears—I came in second! Despite my physical pain and mental suffering, I’d run my best mile ever. It was the exact time I needed to qualify for the Districts meet. I was sure of it! I looked at the people cheering for me. All my suffering was worth it! Only then did I realize that miracles did happen as long as you kept going! Never before had I been so overwhelmed with such pride and excitement. I made it! (83)

【答案】
I was completely knocked out by the news. What should I do? Having prepared for such a long time, I didn’t think of that coming up. Feeling at a loss, I was brainstorming as hard as I could to think of a solution, when a gentle touch on my back brought me back to reality. It was my mum, who looked at me with care and concern. “You have prepared for it enough. You can do it by yourself.” She said after my stumbled explanation. I looked back at her eyes, and a sense of confidence and warmness swelled up in my heart. Yes, I could do it myself.
Finally came the big moment. Looking around the audience, I stepped onto the stage, with butterflies in my stomach. My voice trembled at first, but with the melodies flew around, the nervousness was gone with the wind. Emotions filled in my song, I performed as naturally as I spoke every day. I saw my mum, who was looking at me with reassurance and care. It turned out to be a good performance, which helped me conquer my fears and turned me into a new person.

Paragraph 1:
One morning, I went out to pick up rubbish. Some people watched me with a strange look that seemed to say I was crazy. And suddenly, I remembered that old lady who often picked up rubbish years ago. The interesting thing was that I was acting just like her! As strange as it might sound, picking up rubbish is kind of fun for me! Gradually, many people realized I was volunteering to help make our town clean. They praised me and thanked me.
Paragraph 2:
Then I decided to encourage more students to do this in the town. Surprisingly, they agreed and we set up a volunteer organization. We bought each student a bright orange coat with words on it: Let’s make our town cleaner! And we took time to not only pick up rubbish but also sort through it and recycle it. Something amazing happened—the strangers around us helped out too! I thought to myself: “The old lady made all this happen; she made a big difference in my life.”

【答案】
Gail’s eyes lit up with curiosity. “What did you do, Grandma?” he asked eagerly, his voice filled with wonder. Grandma smiled and nodded. “Well, I sorted through my things, kept what mattered, and gave the rest to charity.” As Grandma spoke, excitement grew within Gail. Feeling inspired, he stood up. “I want to do that too!” With that, he started by clearing everything under the bed. Under Grandma’s guidance, he began to sort through the pile, piece by piece and then categorised it into things to keep, donate, and throw away. Slowly, the mess faded away and the room started to take shape.
The next day, they took the pile of things they had gathered to a local charity. As they handed over the things, the warm smile of the volunteers made Gail’s heart swell with a mix of emotions — relief, pride, and a new sense of responsibility. “It feels good to help others,” he said quietly when they drove back. Looking at the tidy and neat room, Gail realised that keeping things organised can bring joy, not just to himself, but to others as well. From then on, Gail made sure to put his things in the right place and only keep what he truly needed. Cleaning up didn’t feel like such a big task anymore.

【答案】
Once upon a time in a small village in ancient China, there lived a young man named Kuang Heng. He had a great thirst for knowledge, but his family was too poor to afford a lamp for him to study at night.
One evening, as he sat in the dark, he noticed a faint glow of light seeping through a crack in the wall, which came from the lamp of his neighbor. Kuang Heng’s eyes lit up with an idea. He carefully dug a small hole in the wall, just large enough to let in a beam of light. From that day forward, Kuang Heng would huddle by the hole in the wall, using the stolen light to read his books and study late into the night. In this way, he taught himself many ancient classic books.
The story of Kuang Heng has been passed down through generations, reminding us all that where there is a will, there is always a way to overcome obstacles and achieve our goals.

(2024-2025学年高二上学期·福建省南平市·期末)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

The old man took out a small toolbox from his backpack. He removed the broken chain and cleaned it carefully before he put it back on. After that, he took out a pump and blew up the flat tire. Right nearby, Tom watched in amazement as the old man worked his magic. In no time at all, the bicycle was in perfect condition again, as if it had never broken down. “Amazing!” Tom cried with great admiration, his face lighting up, “Thank you so much! You’ve saved my day.”
The old man smiled, “It’s nothing, boy. Now go and enjoy your day.” Waving goodbye to the old man, Tom jumped onto his bicycle and headed for the park delightedly. The breeze rushing through his hair, he finally reached the park where his friends were waiting. They spent the day playing and laughing. It was really a fun and beautiful day. That night, with laughter still lingering in his ears and appreciation deep inside, Tom determined to lend a hand to those in need just as the old man did.

【答案】
Astonished by his simple “thank you,” I looked at him with confusion. He continued, “Most people avoid me or tell me to get lost. You are the first person who didn’t mind sitting next to me, like I’m a person too. Thank you for treating me with respect.” I was taken aback, realizing how a small act of kindness had such a significant impact on him. “We all deserve kindness,” I replied softly. He nodded, gathered his few belongings, and gave me one last appreciative smile before walking away. This brief encounter left me pondering the profound influence of acknowledging one’s humanity.
Later, as the film crew began to load their equipment, I walked up to them. Sharing the experience with the students, I said, “Today, I learned something valuable. Every act of kindness counts. Even when you think it’s insignificant, it could mean the world to someone else.” The students listened intently, absorbing the lesson. Inspired, they acknowledged the importance of empathy and compassion, ready to incorporate this mindset into their lives and work. I realized that even as just the driver, I still had much to offer, both as a lesson and as an example.

【答案】
Inspired by his own life story, David decided to do something for that boy. He went to the woman, who immediately recognized him because she had read his books and seen his pictures. David started to chat with her. He told her that what she said to her boy was not appropriate. Then he told her about the encouragement he once got from Mrs. Brown. In the end, he said, “I couldn’t have become a writer if I had believed I was good at nothing.”
The mother was ashamed when she heard that. She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid, which would make him lose confidence in himself. So she said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll never say such things to him again. Instead, I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at the back of the boy, David felt relieved, hoping his action could make a difference to the boy.

Thanks to the encouragement from her parents and Mr. White, Nancy could persevere. The moment finally arrived! Nancy’s name echoed through the auditorium as the winner of the $1,000 prize.
Informed of the result, Nancy couldn’t wait to share it with Mr. White. She went to Mr. White’s office to share the great news to thank him in person. Nancy couldn’t contain her excitement as she rushed there. Mr. White beamed with joy, greatly proud of his student’s triumph. “This is just the beginning, Nancy. You’ve proven that hard work pays off,” he said, affirming her newfound confidence.

【答案】
We scrambled to collect the flying papers. With the wind still howling, it was a real challenge. Lin Yue dashed after a yellow-colored letter that was being carried high by the gusts. I chased a blue one that was fluttering near the bushes. Every time we managed to catch one, a sense of relief washed over us. As we gathered more and more, we found that each letter held a little piece of someone’s heart. There were letters about lost dreams, unspoken love, and long-held regrets. We were like detectives uncovering the hidden stories of the town.
That evening, Lin Yue and I sat in the garden, sorting the recovered notes. Under the soft glow of the setting sun, we carefully arranged the letters back into the glass jar. Lin Yue’s eyes sparkled with a newfound determination. “We should make this place a real haven for people’s secrets,” she said. I whole-heartedly agreed. We decided to build a small shed to protect the jar from the elements and put up a new sign to invite others to share their stories.

Paragraph 1:
Suddenly the plane shook heavily and the bag next to me fell on the floor. Startled, I quickly reached down to pick it up, and as I did, a small notebook fell out from the bag. I opened it and immediately recognized my sister’s handwriting. It was a diary she had secretly slipped into my bag before I left. Flipping through the pages, I found heartfelt messages, memories of our childhood, and words of encouragement for my new journey. Tears welled up in my eyes as I realized the depth of her love and support, even in my absence.
Paragraph 2:
I spent the rest of the flight reading about my sister’s diary. Her words on the page brought a bittersweet mix of emotions, reminding me of the bond we shared and the strength she always gave me.

【答案】
We decided to fix our mistake, and then an idea occurred. Rhys and I quietly slipped into the kitchen and found a piece of white paper and some colored pencils. We drew a beautiful rose, carefully coloring each petal to match the glass one. On the card, we wrote, “To Mom, our love for you will last forever, just like Dad’s.” We also picked some fresh flowers from the garden and arranged them in a small jar. With our handmade card and the flowers, we tiptoed back to the living room, where Mom was still sitting quietly, staring at the broken pieces of the vase.
Mom’s eyes falling on the flowers and the card, her face lit up. She picked up the card and read it slowly, her tears now replaced by a soft smile. She pulled us both into a tight hug and whispered, “Thank you, my loves. This means more to me than anything.” Rhys and I exchanged a relieved glance, knowing we had done something special. Though the porcelain rose was broken, we realized that love, whether from Dad or from us, could never truly be shattered. It was a lesson we would carry with us forever.

【答案】
“Come with me!” Josh called out. The next instant, he raced upstairs with lighting speed. I hurried to follow him into the attic, where we began a thorough search. Mom was amused by our excitement when we found the broken umbrellas and use them as the backbone of the scarecrow. After that, we sorted out some old sheets and tied them on, The scarecrow now looked even scarier. We dragged our creation to the cornfield and planted it firmly in the mud, our hearts full of hope.
In the days that followed, the scarecrow stood proudly. Serving as a silent guardian, it successfully scared the birds away. Under its watchful eyes, our cornfield flourished this year. To our amazement, Mom’s useless things from the attic had come together to create something extraordinary. As we enjoyed a good harvest, her favorite saying, “waste not, want not”, echoed in our hearts. The “Affair of the Scarecrow” has taught us the value of creatively transforming seemingly useless items into treasure, making us aware that frugality is a good quality after all.

Paragraph 1:
She decided to approach the wolf slowly, speaking in a soft, peaceful voice. “Hey there,” Katie whispered, moving cautiously. “It’s okay. I’m not going to hurt you.” The wolf’s eyes were full of fear and desperation, but it didn’t growl or try to run away. As Katie got closer, she could see that the tiny animal in its mouth was a badly injured wolf cub. “Oh, you poor thing,” she murmured, reaching out a hand. The mother wolf hesitated for a moment, then gently placed the cub at Katie’s feet, as if asking for help.Paragraph 2:
When knowing she came to help, the wolf seemed to understand. It backed away a few steps, allowing Katie to examine the cub. Katie quickly assessed the cub’s injuries. She glanced back at the mother wolf, who was watching her intently, and spoke softly, “I’ll do my best to save your baby.” With the hospital staff assisting, they worked together to clean and bandage the wounds. The mother wolf waited anxiously. After what seemed like hours, the mother wolf’s eyes softened in relief as she gently took the cub back. Katie watched as they disappeared into the night, feeling a deep sense of accomplishment and wonder.
