Credit Card Management Apps to Stay on Top of Payments
Americans collectively hold about $4 trillion in consumer credit card debt, so a money management app might be worth consideration. Here are two top choices that will help manage the credit life.
For Budgeting: Mint
If you’re seeking an app for both a broad view and a detailed look at your credit cards and overall finances as well as warnings to ensure on-time payments, Mint is perhaps the most popular app in this category. You can create a budget, track card spending in customizable (可定制的) categories, get credit card bill warnings, and more.
Reserve a couple of hours to get started because setting it up takes time. And if you’re completely new to financial apps, tracking and categorizing every transaction (交易) you might make could take some getting used to.
Download Mint from the App Store or Google Play for free.
For Tracking Credit Card Rewards: AwardWallet
You can see all of your credit card rewards — including credit card points such as Citi ThankYou Points, American Express Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards—in one place. The app also lets you know when your awards will expire (过期) so you can use them before you lose them.
Arghandewal, who travels all over the world by using points and miles, says the AwardWallet app helps her keep track of everything. “You can link all of your frequent flyer, hotel and even bank rewards accounts and get notices when your rewards balance changes,” she says.
AwardWallet requires access to your email account, which could make some folks uncomfortable. And some loyalty programs aren’t part of the platform.
Download AwardWallet from the App Store for free.
26. The users of Mint can ________.
A. reduce daily transactions B. get detailed financial advice
C. receive warnings of on-time payment D. track their card spending and rewards
27. Arghandewal is quoted in AwardWallet to ________.
A. show why the app is popular B. explain how to win rewards
C. instruct people to download the app D. persuade people to use the app
28. Both Mint and AwardWallet ________.
A. help users manage their credit cards B. need access to users’ email accounts
C. inform users of the expired awards D. take time for users to get used to them

Sylvester Stallone has one of the most inspiring success stories. Before he made it big, he was essentially a starving artist. For many years after his college years, he worked odd jobs to pay the bill while simultaneously taking on any acting role he could find to keep his dreams of becoming a successful actor alive.
Most people don’t know this about Sylvester Stallone, but he had a dream as a young man to become a big movie star in Hollywood. He longed to become a great director, producer, and writer. Everyone told him it could not be done, but he wasn’t one to take no for an answer. And after finding little luck in the New York’s films scene, he decided to try his chances in Los Angeles.
It was a struggle that Sylvester would endure for many years, seven in fact. Throughout all of those seven challenging years, Sylvester would gain a few small roles in a handful of movies, but nothing grand enough to get his career launched. During those seven long years of striving, he came face-to-face with near poverty. Getting so desperate for money, he at one point had to sell his wife’s jewelry. And he even had to sell his dog because he couldn’t keep him fed. And to top it all off, there came a point where Sylvester was homeless, and had to sleep outside for a number of days.
But his days of struggle as an aspiring actor would not last forever. After facing seemingly many hardships for over seven years, he would finally get his big break. And this break would come after he managed to get a script he wrote in a three-day flurry of inspiration in front of two big-shot directors in Hollywood. It was this defining moment that would turn the tides for Sylvester Stallone, and his career would skyrocket after he negotiated the lead role in the film that would come to be known as “Rocky”.
Since then, Sylvester Stallone, and his series of movies revolving around Rocky have been inspiring people all around the world. His success story is one that should be observed, retold, and shared, just as much as his movies are.
29. How did Sylvester feel about becoming a film star when he was young?
A It would be impossible. B. It would take lots of luck.
C. It would involve struggles. D. It would come true for sure.
30. What event marked a turning point in Stallone’s career?
A. He negotiated the lead role in the film “Rocky”. B. He went to Los Angeles for more opportunities.
C. He became homeless and slept outside for many days. D. He succeeded in showing his script to two great directors.
31. Sylvester’s life story is written to ________.
A. remember the famous actor B. describe how he succeeded
C. motivate others to pursue dreams D. explain the popularity of his movie

Teenagers who spend more than three hours a day on social media may have doubled the risk of mental health problems compared with those who avoid it, research suggests.
The study of more than 6,000 children aged 12 to 15 found those who used social media more heavily were more likely to report situations such as sadness, anxiety and loneliness, as well as aggression(攻击性) and anti-social actions, than teenagers who did not use social media. The findings held true even when researchers took into account mental health problems experienced by young persons in the year before they were asked about social media use.
The research, from a team at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Maryland, was published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry(精神病学).
Some previous studies have suggested no connection between poorer mental health and screen time. Dr. Rina Dutta, senior medical lecturer at Kings College London, said, “A main strength of this study compared to previous research is that the researchers took into account mental health problems the young people already had a year before the measurement of social media use. This largely overcomes the ‘what came first -mental health problem or high social media use’ question.”
The study looked at two types of actions that can show mental health problems: internalizing(内化行为) and externalizing(外化行为). Internalising can include social disconnection or difficulty dealing with anxiety or sadness. Externalising can include aggression or breaking instructions.
The study found that the use of social media for at least three hours a day was connected with around twice the risk of mental health problems, compared with those who avoided it.
Lead author Kira Riehm said, “Many present studies have found a connection between digital or social media use and the health of teens, but few look at this connection across time.
We cannot say that social media causes mental health problems, but we do think that less time on social media may be better for the health of teens.
The study found that fewer than 17 percent of teenagers did not use social media. Of those who did, 32 percent spent less than 30 minutes a day; 31 percent spent 30 minutes to three hours; 12 percent spent three to six hours and 8 percent spent more than six hours per day.
Ms. Riehm said, “Social media has the ability to connect teenagers who may be excluded(排除在外) in their daily life. We need to find a better way to balance the benefits of social media with possible harmful health results.”
32. The research published in the journal JAMA Psychiatry aims to prove_________
A. the advantages and disadvantages of social media
B. the mental health problems experienced by teenagers
C. the connection between mental health and screen time
D. the sadness, anxiety and loneliness caused by social media
33. Which of the following might be one of the intenalising actions?
A. Aggression. B. Following instructions.
C. Skillfully dealing with anxiety. D. Being afraid of talking to people.
34. What was Kira Riehm’s view on social media?
A. It would play a balanced role. B. It might disconnect teenagers.
C. It caused mental health problems. D. It might be better for the health of teens.
35. What is the main idea of the passage?

Hybrid cars (混合动力车) are cars that run on petrol and electricity. They have a small standard petrol engine and a battery electric motor to provide electric power.
There are some differences between different models of hybrid cars, but the general principle is that the car runs on petrol, and the electric motor kicks in when additional power is required, for example, when going uphill or accelerating. In some hybrid cars the petrol engine turns itself off when not needed, for example when the car has stopped at traffic light, keeping only the electric engine running.
Conventional cars have large engines to deal with driving uphill and accelerating. Hybrid cars have much smaller petrol engines, improved by electric motors when needed, so they use less petrol. Another way that fuel consumption is cut by a system of “regenerative (再生的) braking”. The electric motor is used to slow down the car, rather than conventional brakes. The energy produced by slowing the car is changed into electrical power, which is automatically stored in the battery. In effect, the battery recharges when you brake. In conventional cars the energy produced when braking is wasted.
In 1928 Ferdinand Porsche built an experimental hybrid car. The first mass-produced hybrid car, the Toyota Prius, came out in Japan at the end of 1997. However, hybrid cars. became available in the USA. only in 1999.As they use less fuel, hybrid cars are cheaper to run. There are also many voices in place to encourage people to buy them. In some countries, hybrid car owners pay a lower rate of tax, and don’t have to pay on certain roads. In some cities, hybrid cars are allowed to park for free.
36. Hybrid cars consume less energy than conventional cars because hybrid cars ________.
A. have large engines to deal with accelerating
B. have conventional brakes to slow down the car
C. have electric power to assist when needed
D. have no energy consumption when stopping
37. What is NOT the reason why hybrid cars use less energy?
A. Smaller petrol engines B. Scientific design
C Traditional brakes D. Energy storage
38. From the last paragraph we can learn that Hybrid cars ________.
A. were first available in the USA B. will gain more popularity
C. free their owners from tax D. are free to park anywhere in the city
39. The main purpose of this text is to ________.
A. show how hybrid cars slow down
B. encourage people to buy hybrid cars
C. inform people of a kind of energy-saving cars
D. explain why hybrid cars use less energy
【答案】36. C 37. C 38. B 39. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了混合动力车的概念、工作原理、节省燃油的方式以及它们的历史和发展。
【36题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中“There are some differences between different models of hybrid cars, but the general principle is that the car runs on petrol, and the electric motor kicks in when additional power is required, for example, when going uphill or accelerating.(不同型号的混合动力汽车之间存在一些差异,但总的原理是汽车以汽油为动力,当需要额外动力时,例如上坡或加速时,电动机就会启动。)”可知,混合动力车之所以比传统汽车更节能,是因为它们配备了小型汽油发动机和电池电动马达,当需要额外动力时,例如上坡或加速时,电动马达会介入提供帮助。故选C。
【37题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“The electric motor is used to slow down the car, rather than conventional brakes. The energy produced by slowing the car is changed into electrical power, which is automatically stored in the battery. In effect, the battery recharges when you brake. In conventional cars the energy produced when braking is wasted.(电动马达用来使汽车减速,而不是传统的刹车。汽车减速产生的能量转化为电能,自动储存在电池中。实际上,当你刹车时电池就会充电。在传统汽车中,刹车时产生的能量被浪费了。)”可知,实际上,混合动力车使用使用电动马达来减速,而不是传统刹车,从而将减速产生的能量转化为电能并存储在电池中即混合动力车使用更少的能源并不是因为它们有传统刹车。故选C。
【38题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“There are also many voices in place to encourage people to buy them. In some countries, hybrid car owners pay a lower rate of tax, and don’t have to pay on certain roads. In some cities, hybrid cars are allowed to park for free.(也有很多声音鼓励人们购买它们。

It is possible that you’ve heard one of the world’s most famous piano pieces Für Elise. It was written by the great German composer Ludwig van Beethoven. He is considered by some to be the greatest composer of all time, Sadly, Beethoven didn’t live long enough to enjoy the popularity of this little piece. It wasn’t published until many years after his death.
Though Beethoven composed Für Elise in 1810, it wasn’t discovered until 1865. It was published two years later, and the music became popular right away. However, some details remain a secret, especially the title because Beethoven wasn’t alive to discuss the work.
Ludwig Nohl, the man who discovered the piece, believed the title read Fur Elise. Yet because Beethoven had terrible handwriting, others weren’t sure who it was dedicated (献给) to. Some thought it might have read Fur Therese. The title Fur Elise means For Elise in German. But to this day, no one knows for sure who Elise was.
Some believe Therese Malfatti, Beethoven’s student and friend, is the strongest candidate (候选人) for the piece’s title. It’s believed that he proposed marriage (求婚) to her in 1810, but they never married. After her death, the music, which was signed by Beethoven, was found in her things.
Why is Für Elise still so popular today? It is because many piano students are introduced to it by their teachers. It’s also part of German pop culture. For instance the easily recognizable music can be heard in commercials (商业广告) and in movies. It’s also a popular mobile phone ring. Google has reported millions of searches for the famous music. In some places of China, rubbish trucks play the music to remind people to take out their rubbish. At times, the music has confused (使混淆) some foreigners who are used to musical trucks that carry ice cream, not rubbish.

Sylvester Stallone has one of the most inspiring success stories. Before he made it big he was essentially a starving artist.
Since then Sylvester Stallone, and his series of movies revolving around Rocky have been inspiring people all around the world. His success story is one that should be observed, retold, and shared, just as much as his movies are.

B the mental health problems experienced by teenagers
C. the connection between mental health and screen time
D. the sadness, anxiety and loneliness caused by social media
A. Social media is capable of connecting teenagers.
B. Teenagers have mental health problems before using social media.
C. Social media connects to increased risk of mental health problems.
D. Teenagers with less time on social media do better than those with more time.

The first mass-produced hybrid car the Toyota Prius, came out in Japan at the end of 1997.
C. Traditional brakes D. Energy storage
38. From the last paragraph we can learn that Hybrid cars ________.
A. were first available in the USA B. will gain more popularity
C. free their owners from tax D. are free to park anywhere in the city
39. The main purpose of this text is to ________.
A. show how hybrid cars slow down
B. encourage people to buy hybrid cars
C. inform people of a kind of energy-saving cars
D. explain why hybrid cars use less energy

The Happy Man
The happy man lives objectively, and has free love and wide interests, through which he secures his happiness. To be the receivers of love is a vital cause of happiness, but the man who demands love is not the man to whom it is given. ____40____ But it is useless to attempt to give love as a calculation, for it is not sincere and is not felt.
What then can a man do who is unhappy because he is enclosed in self? If he is to get out of the vicious (恶性的) circle of unhappiness, it must be by true interests. But before that, he should analyze his trouble first. ____41____ If fear is his trouble, let him practice exercises designed to give courage.
Admit to himself every day at least one painful truth. ____42____ Exercises of this sort will enable him to admit facts and will free him from the fear to a large extent.
____43____ Do not say to yourself in advance, “I should be happy if I could become interested in stamp-collecting,” and thus set to work to collect stamps, for it may well happen that you will altogether fail to find stamp-collecting interesting. You may be pretty sure that true objective interests will grow up as soon as you have learnt not to be self-centered.
All unhappiness depends upon lack of integration (融合). There is disintegration within the self, consciously and unconsciously or between the self and society. ____44____ Such a man feels himself a citizen of the universe, enjoying what it affords, untroubled by the death because he feels not separate from those who will come after him.
