Like almost every set of new parents, Bryan and Elizabeth Shaw started snapping pictures of their son, Noah, practically from the moment he was born. When he was about three months old, Elizabeth noticed something odd.
The flash on their digital camera created the typical red dot in the center of Noah’s left eye, but the right eye had a white spot at the center, almost as if the flash was being reflected back at the camera by something. When Elizabeth took Noah to an eye doctor, Noah was diagnosed with retinal (视网膜) cancer with the white reflection as a sign. He endured months of treatment, but it was too late.
Noah’s cancer is treatable if caught early. Bryan Shaw wondered whether there were signs he’d missed. He went back over every baby picture of Noah he could find and discovered the first white spot in a photo taken when Noah was 12 days old. As time went on, it appeared more frequently. “By the time he was four months old, it was showing up in 25percent of the pictures taken of him per month,” Bryan recalled.
Later, Bryan was determined to put his hard-won insights to good use. He created a database that recorded the cancer’s appearance in every photo of Noah. He also collected photos and compiled the data from eight other children with the same cancer. Armed with that data, he began to work with colleagues to develop a smartphone app that can scan the photos in the user’s camera roll to search for white eye and can be used as a kind of ophthalmoscope (眼底镜). Called White Eye Detector, it is now available for free on Google Play and in Apple’s Apple Store.
“I just kept telling myself, I really need to do this,” Bryan said. “This disease is tough to detect. Not only could this software save vision, but it can save lives.”

A. To record his growth.
B. To celebrate his birth.
C. To test their digital camera.
D. To collect evidence of eye diseases.
5. Which word can best describe Bryan’s feelings in paragraph 3?
A. Terrified. B. Regretful. C. Lonely. D. Exhausted.
6. What can the app do to help?
A. It serves as a detector.
B. It presents expert advice.
C. It saves photos on users’ phones.
D. It provides a worldwide database.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. How a boy lost his eye.
B. How a new app works.
C. How a father saved his son.
D. How an app came into being.

Spanish scientist Pilar Bosch has found a way to use bacteria (细菌) to repair 18th-century paintings. Bosch, a microbiologist, said that she got the idea for the method while considering possibilities for a paper toward her doctoral degree. During this process, she discovered someone else’s paper that suggested bacteria can be used to repair artworks.
At around the same time, Bosch learned that her mother, Pilar Roig, was struggling to find a good method for repairing 18th-century paintings. The paintings, by Spanish artist Antonio Palomino, sat in Santos Juanes—one of the oldest churches in the city of Valencia. Pilar Roig noted how difficult the repair process at the church was. One reason was the glue (胶水) used to remove the paintings from the walls in the 1960s. The glue was nearly impossible to remove completely.
“My mother had a very difficult problem to solve and I found a paper about bacteria used to clean paintings on walls in Italy,” Bosch said. Bosch added she decided to write her doctoral paper on the same subject. Today, she gets to work with her mother on the church repair. They are using the bacteria method to remove glue from artworks. The $4.46 million project is being financed by local organizations.
To repair, they feed small amounts of the glue that was made from animal collagen (胶原蛋白) to the bacteria. After a time, the bacteria begin to naturally produce enzymes (酶) to break down the glue. The mother-daughter team then mixes the bacteria with a natural algae-based substance, called a gel (凝胶), and places it onto the paintings. After about three hours, the gel mixture is removed, leaving the paintings glue-free.
Bosch’s mother, now 75, noted that in the past, people working on repairing artworks had to use traditional cleaning methods that took hours and damaged the painting. Bosch is now training other scientists to use a different kind of bacteria to clear walls of painted graffiti.
8. How did Bosch find the way to repair old paintings?
A. Her mother inspired her. B. Her doctor instructed her.
C. She tested it out by many experiments. D. She found it when preparing her paper.
9. What made it difficult to repair the old paintings?
A. Not having enough money. B. The history of the churches.
C. The glue that was once used. D. Experience of past failures.
10. What is paragraph 4 centered on?
A. The process of cleaning the paintings.
B. The necessity of repaıring the paintings.
C. The challenges facing the mother-daughter team.
D. The materials that are used to clean the paintings.
11. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Bacteria Removal Process Is Widely Used in Spain.
B. Spanish Scientist Uses Bacteria to Repair Artworks.
C. Old Artworks Are Likely to Be Repaired with Bacteria.
D. Spanish Mother-Daughter Team Discovered A Painting.

Curling (冰壶), originating in Scotland, dates back to the early 16th century. Often referred to as “chess on ice”, it includes two teams of four players taking turns to slide (滑动) round stones on a special ice surface towards a circle that looks like a dartboard (镖靶). Called the “house”, this circle acts as a score board. The goal for each side is to get their stones closest to the center, or “button”.
A special part of the game is the use of a broom to sweep the ice in front of the sliding stone. As many viewers of curling might have noticed, in curling, players usually sweep hard while keeping up to speed with the stone thrown, and a person on the other end directing and shouting at the sweepers “HARD!” during the game. With three players taking turns throwing stones and sweeping ice, and one person, called the “skip”, often the team leader, throwing the last two stones, the whole game depends on each other to win the competition. Similar to many other sports, curling takes more interactions to win than personal ability.
Curling is often considered a gentleman’s sport because all players of the game should have good etiquette. As with many other sports, curling has rules about how to keep the respect and fun of the game for everyone. It usually starts with both teams sharing a handshake and greetings before the start of the game. Unlike other sports, each player follows the “do not disturb (打扰)” rule when the others are playing. With such a unique approach to playing a competitive sport, curling can teach both players and audiences alike the values of respect and fairness.
Curling is fresh in China, but it is quickly gaining popularity. There are professional curling venues and training bases all over the country. On the international stage, the Chinese curling team is also performing increasingly well. This has inspired more passion among Chinese people for the sport.
12. What is the function of the “house” in the curling game?
A. To make the stones slide much faster. B. To show the results of each of game.
C. To offer a place for the players to rest. D. To get the stones closest to the “button”.
13. What is the key to winning a curling game for a team according to paragraph 2?
A. Team members’ working together. B. The ability of an excellent player.
C. The sweepers’ speed to slide stones. D. The team leader’s last two stones.
14. What does the underlined word “etiquette” in paragraph 3 mean?
A Luck. B. Health. C. Manners. D. Skills.
15. Which word can best describe curling’s development in China?
A. Uncertain. B. Challenging. C. Worrying. D. Hopeful.

A. Luck. B. Health. C. Manners. D. Skills.
15. Which word can best describe curling’s development in China?
A. Uncertain. B. Challenging. C. Worrying. D. Hopeful.
【答案】12. B 13. A 14. C 15. D

细节理解题。根据第二段中“With three players taking turns throwing stones and sweeping ice, and one person, called the “skip”, often the team leader, throwing the last two stones, the whole game depends on each other to win the competition. Similar to many other sports, curling takes more interactions to win than personal ability. (三名选手轮流扔冰壶和扫冰,其中一人被称为“领队”,通常是队长,扔最后两个冰壶,整个游戏就靠对方来赢得比赛。与许多其他运动一样,冰壶需要更多的互动而不是个人能力来赢得胜利)”可知,对于一个团队来说,赢得冰壶比赛的关键是团队成员的合作。故选A项。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。画线词的上文“Curling is often considered a gentleman’s sport (冰壶常被认为是绅士的运动)”提到冰壶运动讲究绅士行为,画线词的下文“As with many other sports, curling has rules about how to keep the respect and fun of the game for everyone. It usually starts with both teams sharing a handshake and greetings before the start of the game. Unlike other sports, each player follows the “do not disturb (打扰)” rule when the others are playing.
根据最后一段“Curling is fresh in China, but it is quickly gaining popularity. There are professional curling venues and training bases all over the country. On the international stage, the Chinese curling team is also performing increasingly well. This has inspired more passion among Chinese people for the sport. (冰壶运动在中国尚属新鲜事物,但正在迅速普及。全国各地都有专业的冰壶场地和训练基地。在国际舞台上,中国冰壶队的表现也越来越好。这激发了中国人对这项运动的更多热情)”可知,在中国,冰壶作为一项新的运动,越来越受欢迎。由此可知,冰壶运动在中国的发展是充满希望的。故选D项。

Their desks were piled high with textbooks and notes. With determination and hard work. they managed to squeeze every last drop of knowledge into their brains. The upcoming exams for the first time in this new term still made them feel nervous though.
Finally, the day of the exams arrived and passed, making them feel both relaxed and tired. As they exchanged nervous looks after handing in their last papers, they knew they had given it their all.
Days later, when the results were announced (宣布), Lily and Tom were overjoyed to find out that their efforts had paid off, and they had both achieved excellent grades. To celebrate, they decided to take a well- deserved break and go on a trip to the nearby amusement park during the weekend.
The park was filled with excitement that day, and Lily and Tom wasted no time diving into the relaxing activities. They rode roller coasters, watched live performances and were lost in cotton candy, laughing and chatting the whole time. The sun shone brightly in autumn, and their spirits were high. As the day drew to a close, they began to make their way to the exit, their hearts full of joy and memories.
Suddenly, just as they were walking on the way home, they heard a weak sound from somewhere. Following the sound, they found a small, injured puppy (小狗) lying on the roadside. Without any thought, they rushed over to help.
