One August afternoon, Richard Allen dropped off his last passenger, Mrs. Carey. Lifting two shopping bags, he followed her across the yard and stood on the step of her house. Looking up, he saw a large wasp nest (黄蜂巢穴) above the door. Allen had heard that wasps can become more likely to sting (刺,蛰) in summer. He mentioned this to Mrs. Carey, who had opened the door.
“Oh, they don’t trouble me,” she said. “I go in and out all the time.”
Nervously, Allen looked at the nest again—to see the wasps flying straight at him. “Hurry,” he shouted to Mrs. Carey. “Get in!”
She stepped quickly inside. Allen ran for his mini-bus. Too late. They were upon him. Just as he jumped aboard, several red stings showed on his arm, and he felt more on his back and shoulders.
As he was driving down the road, Allen felt as if something was burning at the back of his neck, and the “fire” was spreading forward toward his face. And immediate worry and fear took hold of him. Allen knew that stings could cause some persons to die. But he had been stung last summer and the after-effects soon passed. However, what he didn’t know was that the first sting had made his body a hidden risk, waiting for the next sting to cause a serious reaction.
Miles from the nearest medical help, Allen began to feel his tongue (舌头) thick and heavy and his heartbeat louder. Most terribly, he felt his breathing more and more difficult. He reached for the radio mike (话筒), trying to call the mini-bus center, but his words were hardly understandable. Signals were also poor that far out. He knew an emergency team was on 24-hour duty at the north Amherst Fire Station. So his best chance was to make a run for it.
Rushing down the mountain, Allen tried not to be afraid, focusing his mind on each quick turn. He was almost through the last of them when he felt sure he was going into shock. Just then he reached for the radio mike again.
“Call fire station,” he shouted, trying hard to form the words. “Emergency. Bee sting. Emergency. There in ten minutes.”
“Ok. Stay calm. We’ll help you,” the center replied.
Hold on, Allen thought. Keep your eyes open. Breathe. Keep awake.
At last, he reached the station. Two firemen ran out. Allen felt their hands catch him before he hit the ground. “You made it,” he thought.
24. How did Allen feel when he saw the wasps flying straight at him?
A. Nervous B. Calm C. Excited D. Angry
25. Which of the following is true according to the story?
A. Allen stopped his mini-bus to ask another driver for help.
B. Allen’s call for help was clearly understood by the mini-bus center.
C. Allen was stung for the first time when he helped Mrs. Carey that afternoon.
D. Allen managed to reach the fire station and was saved just before he fell down.
26. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Helping others can sometimes bring us trouble.
B. Knowing the danger of wasp stings is important.
C. Staying calm and acting quickly helps in danger.
D. Calling a fire station is the best way to get help.

In many ways, our memories define (定义) our sense of self. You first have a sense of yourself early in life, perhaps as young as 18 months, when you recognize that the little baby you see in the mirror is really you, and not another child. As you progress through childhood and into teenage years, you start to develop a set of views about your identity (身份), including how your body looks and performs, your abilities, your personality and your place in society.
While we are growing up, we start to create our own descriptions about the events we have gone through, or what I call the “life story”. Our identities are shaped by our life stories, as the memories of these stories gradually become a part of our sense of self. Of all these memories, the most important are “self-defining memories”. They are remembered most clearly and can help to build up our overall sense of self most greatly.
Learning to recognize your own self-defining memories can help you gain important insights about your identity The easiest way to discover your own self-defining memories is by thinking about the events in your life that you are most likely to tell other people about when they say “tell me a little about yourself”.
However, self-defining memories are always changing as you experience more events. They may vary according to your age and what you care about in present life.
In a study, scientists compared older adults with college students. They found that older adults were more likely to feel more positively (正面地) about their self-defining memories, even if the memories were of events that were negative in nature. A similar study also suggests that older adults have found ways to make sense out of their life stories. They turn memories of troubling events into positive stories, and in this way, they make peace with their past struggles (挣扎). For younger adults, troubling events cause them to experience more pain when they recall them. As scientists have discovered, a self-defining memory does not have to be positive in order for you to grow from it. It’s not the event, but the meaning you make out of the event, that affects (影响) your sense of well-being.
Discovering your self-defining memories is an important step in dealing with your life experiences. By recognizing and making sense out of past events, your identity can continue to grow and improve how you see yourself, both now, and in the future.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Our self-defining memories have little to do with age.
B. Our own descriptions of life experiences shape our identity.
C. We should share positive life stories when introducing ourselves.
D. We start to have self-defining memories when we are 18 months old.
28. From the studies mentioned in Paragraph 5, we know ________.
A. important events can be changed by time
B. older adults have few troubling life events
C. making sense out of memories helps us to grow
D. self-discovery happens during positive experiences
29 Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Self-defining memories: How others get to know you
B. Self-defining memories: A collection of pleasant memories
C. Self-defining memories: A great way to understand yourself
D. Self-defining memories: Describing your best self to the world
D
Sophia is smart, talented and incredibly nice. As a team leader, she wishes Nathan, a member of her history project, did his part as required. But rather than criticize him, Sophia offered polite encouragement trying to push him instead, only to find that Nathan kept falling behind. It ended up that other team members, who had to take on more work, complained about both Sophia and Nathan, while Nathan himself complained that he was not treated fairly.
How did poor Sophia get into this mess? The primary reason was that Sophia failed in a key aspect of leadership- the duty to provide clear feedback(反馈)for team members. This isn't simply a duty but a correctness.
Failing to question or criticize Nathan's work, Sophia was in fact unkind. Many people are not a failure, like Nathan in this case; they're just in the wrong place, and still left in the dark. What they really need is feedback from their leaders. However, Sophia, in this case, withheld a gift from Nathan.
"You'd better use open, honest, continuous and clear feedback," says Harry Kraemer, a professor of management and strategy at Northwestern University, "to help figure out someone's best fit- in their particular job or in the organization."
This approach also prevents surprises. It's not uncommon to see someone suddenly removed from a team. They may have deserved it, but with a kind leader, they wouldn't have been caught off-guard because they would have been receiving open, honest, continuous and clear judgment of their performance.
Then why is it so hard for leaders to give good feedback? "We like to be liked," Kraemer says. So we avoid anything that may cause unpleasantness, but that kind of feedback usually helps members find the right place for them. "If you like to be liked, the chance of being respected is extremely low. However, if you start off focusing on being respected, you have a chance of being liked." Kraemer adds. The most difficult part for the leader, of course, involves criticizing someone. That is what a nice leader finds hard.
Back to Sophia's case. Not telling Nathan how he was on the team only made a hard situation worse. But with a different mindset she could have set herself and Nathan up for success.
30. The expression "caught off-guard" in Paragraph 5 probably means"________"
A. kicked out carelessly B. treated unexpectedly
C. sent out unfairly D. guided effortlessly
31. The writer probably agrees that________.
A. being nice to team members is likely to win leaders great respect
B. criticizing team members results in serious complaints to the leader
C open and honest communication is a must for leaders and team members
D. praise and encouragement from leaders bring out better team performance
32. According to the writer, what Sophia should do is________.
A. patiently encouraging Nathan to try his best
B. gradually having Nathan dropped out of the project
C. politely showing Nathan the improvement he made
D. clearly telling Nathan her judgment of his performance
33. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. To be nice or to be kind? B. To be liked or to be criticized?
C. Is it necessary for leaders to be pleasing? D. Is it helpful for leaders to be demanding?
第二部分
本部分共5题,共20分。
四、阅读表达(34-36题,每小题2分;37题4分,共10分)
Visa-Free transit Policy (过境免签政策) increases Tourists’ Arrivals
The number of foreign visitors to China has greatly increased over the past months.
The Chinese government’s 144-hour visa-free transit policy proves to be a smart move. The purpose of this policy is to open up the country to the outside world. It has not only increased overseas tourists’ arrivals in China but also given foreigners a wonderful opportunity to experience the country’s rich culture and history.
According to the 144-hour visa-free transit policy, if you are a national of any of the 54 designated (指定的) countries, you can stop by China on your way to another country. A foreigner can stay in the country for six days at most without a visa.
The policy covers major Chinese cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Chengdu, making it easier for tourists to explore the “can’t-miss” tourist places along the way. After landing at any of the 37 designated ports (口岸), you can simply go to the visa-free transit counter (工作台) and apply for the 144-hour visa-free transit. It definitely saves time and even money.
Surprisingly, due to the new policy, true stories about China are spread through travelers’ posts on social media platforms, including Facebook, Bilibili, and Douyin. These travelers’ personal stories have painted a colorful picture of the real China, which can be considered one of the greatest achievements of the policy. Travelers have praised Chinese people’s kindness, traditional Chinese culture, and the modern infrastructure (基础设施). These stories have attracted audiences worldwide. As someone with a Chinese family and who has lived in China for 25 years, I feel proud when I see our foreign friends sharing the real story about China.
China’s visa-free transit policy is a smart move in international relations and a creative and traveler-friendly way of supporting tourism, as well as encouraging people-to-people exchanges and improving understanding. Whether it’s exploring ancient temples, countryside farms or villages, or enjoying world-class shopping in dream-like malls, visitors leave China with a deeper impression of the country’s contributions to the global community. It seems like a win-win deal from which both the Chinese and the international travelers benefit.

【38题答案】
【答案】范文:
I did a survey on my classmates’ bedtime on weekdays. I asked 40 classmates about their sleep time. The results show that 22 students go to bed before 10 p.m., 11 students between 10-11 p.m., and 7 students after 11 p.m.
From the results, I learned that most students go to sleep at a reasonable time, but some still sleep very late. Staying up late is bad for health and may affect study the next day.
Here is my advice. First, make a good plan for your day and finish homework early. Second, put your cellphone away before sleep. It is helpful to read a book instead. Let’s balance study and rest to keep healthy!
【题目二】
【39题答案】
【答案】例文:
In our life, understanding often begins with a single step towards each other. I deeply realized this through an experience with my mother last year.
One day, my mom asked me to take out the trash while I was doing my homework. I got angry because I thought she didn’t understand how busy I was. I said some hurtful words and ran to my room. After a while, I began to cool down. I realized that my mom was just trying to help me develop good habits. So I made a decision to break the silence. I went to her and said sorry. We communicated sincerely and solved the problem.
This experience taught me that understanding requires courage to reach out. Instead of letting anger control us, we should calm down and talk openly. Only in this way can we build better relationships with the people around us.
