We all know that there are a great number of different plants in the world. But how many kinds of plants are there exactly in the world? Lucy Braun wondered that as a child. She showed a great interest in plants when she was just a little child. She often had energetic walks with her family through the nearby woods. Some plants and wildflowers seemed to shout at her with their wild colors. Others hid behind rocks.
Lucy looked at the shapes of different leaves while she was walking in the woods. She kept a record of what she saw. She also learnt to draw what she saw so that she could compare all kinds of plants. Later. Lucy grew more and more interested in botany, the study of plants.
Branching Out
While she was at university, Lucy took classes in geology, or the study of rocks and minerals. Her work with geologists changed how she looked at the natural world. She continued her studies in botany as well. Lucy also took classes in ecology (生态学). She believed that plant life in some areas was able to move to other places over time.
In Full Bloom
In 1917, Lucy began to teach botany at a university. She lived in a house near the woods, Lucy collected plants from all around the country. She took many photos of them, too. Colour photography was still new then. Because of that, people enjoyed her lessons and photos very much.

A set of photos of a boy carrying his tennis rackets in a bamboo basket has been widely spread on the Internet. Wang Fa, a 15-year-old boy, is a member of the Va ethnic group (佤族) in Yunnan. After winning the under-14 title at the ASICS Tennis Junior Tour in Guangzhou a year ago, an audience member from Yunnan gave him the bamboo basket as a gift and the photos were taken.
“We always carry bamboo baskets when we work in the field. This is a typical farming tool of the Va ethnic group. I carried my rackets in this basket to honour my hometown,” Wang said after the match.
Before tennis, Wang was only an ordinary boy from a village. But in 2016, he was chosen by a local club as one of the first 10 local children to learn to play professional tennis. “I was nervous at the beginning because the outside world was so different from my home,” he said, adding that tennis has helped him make more friends and get a better education.
Over the past six years, Wang, along with other players at the Yunnan Wild Elephants Tennis Club, has trained hard to improve his skills. He thinks his physical strength has also improved. Every day, they must swing a racket more than 7,000 times and run 9 kilometers.
“If I weren’t chosen as a tennis player, I would still be helping out my family with farm work back home,” Wang said. Wang’s parents didn’t want him to learn tennis at first because they couldn’t afford it. But the tennis club taught him for free. His family were very grateful.

Although guide dogs can go to public places now, Xu Jian, a blind woman, still faces many difficulties. “Every time I go out, it takes a lot of time to tell others that my dog is a guide dog,” she says.
Xu went blind when in primary school, but she studied hard and found a good job after she left school. In 2016, Xu applied for a guide dog at the China Guide Dog Training Center in Dalian. After waiting for over a year, she welcomed Daimeng into her life.
The Dalian center started training dogs in 2006 and the workers have trained about 400 guide dogs in the past years. Training guide dogs is quite different from keeping pet dogs. The workers feed and play with young dogs first, and then they train them for about one year and a half. A good guide dog should not get excited or scared easily. And if a dog doesn’t enjoy the job as a guide dog, the workers will stop training it.
Usually a guide dog works for 6 to 10 years. After that, they are usually adopted (收养) by the workers, the users or their families.

No one knows when the first kite was made. The first record of a kite was more than 2,000 years ago in China. Han Xin, the leader of an army, wanted to bring down a king. He decided to dig a tunnel (隧道) into the king’s palace. He flew a kite over the wall of the palace to make sure the length (长度) of its string (线). In this way, he could determine how long the tunnel should be. His men in the tunnel took the kite string with them. When they reached the end of the string, they knew to dig up.
Kites have been flown in Japan for hundreds of years. In the 1700s, kites were flown in autumn to give thanks for a good harvest. They were also flown to send good wishes to couples who had their first son. Today in Japan, kites are often flown as part of a celebration, such as the beginning of a new year. And kite festivals are held each year in many parts of the country.
Kites have been used for scientific purposes in the western world. In 1752, Benjamin Franklin tied a key to a kite and flew it in a storm to find out that lightening was a form of electricity. In the 1890s, Lawrence Hargrave invented the box kite to test ideas about flight. From 1898 until 1933, the United States Weather Bureau (气象局) used box kites to collect weather data. Taking Root
The ▲ of Labour (劳动)
Later in her life, Lucy wrote many field guides. In 1950, she published her most important guide. It describes the plants in the forests all over the country. Ecologists still use it to study changes in the forests over time.
Today, Lucy has a few plants named after her. One of them is Lucy Braun’s snakeroot (蛇根草), which is now in danger. Lucy’s work in the protection of nature may help prevent its disappearance.
Lucy Braun lived to be 81. In her years as a botanist, Lucy collected nearly 12,000 plants!
36. What can we learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 1?
A. The plants seemed to be angry with Lucy. B. The plants could talk just like humans.
C. The plants appeared to be full of life. D. The plants were looked after well by Lucy.
37. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?

For Wang, winning the ASICS Tennis Junior Tour title was the beginning of a hopeful future. “I will aim for the top place on the professional stage,” the rising star said.
