In the Pacific Northwest during winter,5:15 a.m.might be the dead of night. The alarm goes off and the only
light is the red glow from my clock. My body says,"Go back to bed."But I don't.I know my running partner will
be waiting in the street and I'm not going to stand her up.Then I walk onto the road, complaining about the cold
and wishing I were back under my warm covers.
If you'd have asked me a year ago if I could see myself running at 5:15 on a winter morning,I'd have
laughed.Morning just wasn't my thing and running in the morning was something I didn't even consider."I prefer
to work out in the middle of the morning or in the afternoon,"I'd say to my friends who go to the gym before
work.
Then, last fall I reconnected with an old friend. She'd been running in the morning and taken off forty pounds.
When I looked in the mirror,I knew I could benefit from the same kind of weight loss.I asked if I could join her.I
knew I needed to change something if I was going to get back in shape.
The first two months were especially hard, because we ran twice a week at 5:15 a.m.and I slept till 7:00 the
other mornings. But as I've adjusted to the routine of running,I've discovered great joys that make it even more
worthwhile than a little weight loss.
While I haven't lost forty pounds yet,it's amazing how much more energy I have and how much stronger I
feel.Because of the morning run,the rest of my day is more productive.I wouldn't say I've become a morning
person, but I would say morning running is now my thing.
24.What can we know about the author from paragraph 1?
A.5:15 a.m.is the best time for her to exercise
B.She prefers to run alone without any company.
C.She goes for a run despite the cold and early rise.
D.She always takes the run with many warm clothes on.
25.What was the author's attitude to morning running a year ago?
A.Unfavorable.
B.Scared.
C Confused.
D Supportive.
26.What made the author begin to run in the morning?
A.Her partner's encouragement.
B.Her friend's suggestion.
C.Realizing the harm of being fat.
D.Realizing the benefits of running.
27.What effect does morning running have on the author?

Peruvian firefighters were fighting to control a forest fire near Machu Picchu on Thursday,as the flames
threatened to close in on the ancient city high in the Andean mountains.
Machu Picchu,a site of Inca ruins sitting on top of a mountain, was built in the mid-15th century by the Incas,
whose empire controlled large areas of South America from what is today southern Eeuador to central Chile.
Considered as one of the new seven wonders of the world,it is a top tourist attraction in Cusce,Peru.
The fire, which had damaged an area about half the size of Vatican City, was started on June 28,2022 by
farmers burning grass to prepare to plant new seeds.Since Tuesday, about 20 hectares(49 acres)had been affected
by the fire, the mayor of the nearby city of Cusco said.
The fire's remoteness has greatly influenced firefighting efforts."We have already been fighting the forest
fire for two days and it has not been possible to get it under control, for the area is quite far away and hard to
reach,"said Roberto Abarca.director of the Cusco Risk Management and Security Office.
Some 600 firefighters and volunteers battled the fire, and helicopters dropped retardants (in front of
the flames to prevent them from spreading to archaeological(考古学的)sites.“The fire has left the critical zone
where there are archaeological monuments, but is still burning fiercely,"the government said.
While South America's top archaeological treasure was safe from the fire, experts feared the destruction of
thousands of acres of nearby forest would damage Machu Picchu's attraction to tourists.

Search and rescue teams are often accompanied by man's best friend.A dog's greater sense of smell can be
important to finding survivors buried under fallen buildings. But now a new animal is being trained to assist
search and rescue teams after an earthquake hits, and it's the rat.
These rescue rats are being trained by Dr.Donna Kean,a researcher from Glasgow,Scotland who has been
working with rats for years.Kean explained why she and her colleagues at the nonprofit APOPO train rats instead
of dogs."The rats have a comparable sense of smell, and they're just as trainable as dogs,"she said."Their size
is useful because they will be able to move through different environments that dogs just wouldn't be able to."
At the moment, the rats are wearing homemade prototype backpacks that contain microphones, video
equipment,.and location trackers, and then scientists are sending these rats into mock debris(模拟的废墟).Rats
would be able to get into small spaces to get to victims buried in the ruins."We have not been in a real situation
yet,we have got a mock debris site. When we track the backpack,we will be able to hear from where the rat is
inside the debris,"Kean said."We have the potential to speak to victims through the rat."
Researchers train them on a basic series of behaviour.Training starts off in a really basic environment:a
small and empty room. Then they gradually increase the difficulty in order to make it like real life. They can start
adding in debris and making the training area look more like an actual collapsed (building site.
The training just started, and researchers still have to run training trials outside the research environment.
They are working with a search and rescue group called GEA,who are based in Turkey,a country with frequent
earthquakes and hoping that by next year they'll be able to take the rats to Turkey for trials.
32.What advantage do rats have over dogs in the rescue work?
A.They are easier to train
B.They have a better sense of smell.
C.They are more suitable with a smaller size.D.They adapt to new environments more quickly.
33.What function is expected of the backpacks?
A.To guide rats to find survivors.
B.To protect rats from being injured.
C.To provide some food for trapped people.
D.To help rescuers communicate with victims.
34.What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A.The process of training the rats.
B.The difficulty of conducting experiments.
C.The rats'behaviour in real collapsed sites.
D.The importance of the research environment.
35.What will scientists plan to do next?
A.Use rats for rescue work in more countries.B.Send rats to Turkey for field experiments.
C.Conduct further study on disaster warning.D.Develop the technology to assist GEA.
