A nine-year-old boy has set a new 5km parkrun world record for his age group. Louis Robinett, a member of the Poole Runners junior athletics club, shaved 13 seconds off the previous world record, which was set in California in 2017, after he crossed the line in 17 minutes and 40 seconds.
Louis, who broke the record at the Poole parkrun in Dorset on Saturday, said, “I’m on top of the world right now. It’s a huge deal to break a world record. I couldn’t have done it without the support of my family and the team at Poole Runners.”
Louis was accompanied on the parkrun by Dion Garner, a member of his athletics club, as all under-11s in the 5km event must run within arm’s length of an adult. Garner said of Louis’s achievement, “His natural talent, combined with his dedication and spirit, is mind-blowing. He loves the sports and has really practiced a lot.” A spokesman for Poole Runners said, “With his new world record, Louis has raised the bar for young athletes everywhere. This isn’t just a win for Louis, it’s a new benchmark (标准) for youth sports, inspiring children all over the world to aim higher.”
Parkrun was started by 13 friends as a weekly event in Bushy Park, southwest London, in 2004. By 2015 more than 80,000 people were gathering in parks around the world each Saturday to participate in a parkrun. Only three years later about a quarter of a million people were taking part in parkruns each week, in 1,500 events spread across 20 countries. In comparison, 48,000 runners took part in the London Marathon this year.
54. What is the previous 5km parkrun world record?
A.17 minutes and 27 seconds. B.17 minutes and 23 seconds.
C.17 minutes and 40 seconds. D.17 minutes and 53 seconds.
55. How was Louis after breaking the world record?
A.Surprised and thankful. B.Modest and satisfied.
C.Grateful and proud. D.Thrilled and shocked.
56. What can we know from Paragraph 4?
A.Parkrun is ancient but increasingly popular.
B.Standards are needed to make parkrun formal.
C.Parkrun originates from pals’ run during the week.
D.Over 20 countries are competing to host a parkrun.

Many children’s hospitals already have storytelling programmes that aim to cheer up patients. But new research suggests that storytelling also has physiological benefits. “Until now, the positive evidence for storytelling was based on ‘common sense’ that interacting with the child may distract, entertain and reduce psychological suffering,” said Dr Jorge Moll, of D’Or Institute for Research and Education (IDOR), Brazil. “But there was a lack of a solid scientific basis.”
“During storytelling, something happens that we call ‘narrative transportation’. The child, through fantasy, can experience sensations and thoughts that transport him or her to another world, a place that is different from the hospital room, and is, therefore, far from the unpleasant conditions of hospitalization,” says Guilherme Brockington.
The team, based at IDOR and the Federal University of ABC, Brazil, studied 81 children between the ages of two and seven, all of whom were in the intensive care unit (ICU) at a hospital in São Paulo. A group of 41 children each had a session with a storyteller, lasting 25 to 30 minutes. A control group of 40 children each had the same amount of time with the same professionals, but they told riddles instead. Before and after the sessions, the team took saliva(唾液) samples from each child and assessed their pain level. The saliva samples allowed the researchers to measure levels of the hormone cortisol, which is related to stress, and the hormone oxytocin, which plays a role in empathy.
Both groups of children benefited from the sessions: they all had less cortisol and more oxytocin in their saliva, suggesting they were less stressed, and they reported less pain and discomfort. However, the results were twice as strong for the storytelling group as the control group. At the end of the sessions, the children also took part in a word-association exercise including words like ‘hospital’, ‘nurse’ and ‘doctor’. The team said that children from the control group said “this is the bad woman who comes to give me an injection” in response to the pictures of a doctor or a nurse, while the storytelling group said “this is the woman who comes to cure me”.
“I consider this study to be one of the most important I have participated in, due to its potential direct impact on practices in the hospital environment, aiming at the relief of human suffering. We intend to support volunteering devoted to the noble activity of storytelling, now with more solid scientific evidence,” said Moll.
57. According to the passage, “narrative transportation” indicates children _______.
A. feel that they are placed into the world of a story
B. fire up their imagination and expand their horizons
C. have more empathy with the characters in the stories
D. experience the unpleasant conditions of hospitalization
58. In Para.3, the author mainly tells the readers about _______.
A. the application of the research B. the purpose of the research
C. the limitation of the research D. the process of the research
59. How does the author present the findings of the research?
A. By making comparisons. B. By giving definitions.
C. By presenting examples. D. By analyzing cause and effect.
60. Which of the following may be the response from the storytelling group?
A. A hospital is the place where I go when I’m very sick.
B. A hospital is the place where I get an injection in my arm.
C. A hospital is the place where I am taken care of to feel better.
D. A hospital is the place where I’ll have to take some medicine.

The Land Under the Sea
Ten thousand years ago, as the last ice age ended, sea levels around the world were far lower than they are today. Much of the land under both the North Sea to the east of Britain and the English Channel which now separates France and Britain was part of a huge region of forests and grassy plains. Then the climate gradually became warmer and the water trapped in large masses of ice was released.
Now the development of advanced sonar (声纳) technology, known as bathymetry, is making it possible to study this flooded landscape in extraordinary detail. A special echo (回声) sounder is fixed to the bottom of a survey ship and it makes wide sweeps across the seabed. While previous technology has only been able to produce two-dimensional images, bathymetry can now use computers, satellite-positioning equipment and special software to create accurate and remarkably detailed maps. For the first time, an ancient riverbed jumps out of the three-dimensional image. The site of pre-historic settlements can now be pinpointed.
According to expert Linda Andrews, this technological development is of huge significance. “We now have the ability to map the seabed as accurately as we can map dry land,” she says.
Once bathymetric techniques have identified sites where people might have built their homes and villages, divers can be sent down to investigate further. Robot submarines (潜艇) can also be used, and researchers hope they will find stone tools and wood from houses as proof of human activity. The idea shared by many people in Britain of their country as a natural island kingdom will be challenged by the findings: Britain has been inhabited for about 500,000 years and much of this time it has been linked on and off to continental Europe. It remains to be seen how far this new awareness is taken on board, however.
In fact, the use of bathymetry will not be limited to the study of lost landscapes and ancient settlements. It will also be vital in finding ships that have been destroyed in accidents. In addition, commercial applications are a real possibility. Aggregates (骨材) for the construction industry are becoming increasingly expensive, and bathymetry can be used to identify suitable sites for digging for this material. Mapping the seabed will also identify places where rare plants and shellfish are living. Digging at such sites should be prevented, either to work for a profit or to make deeper waterways for massive container ships.
61. How does bathymetry work?
A. It has an echo sounder placed on the seabed.
B. It makes use of a number of different devices.
C. It produces two-dimensional images of the sea floor.
D. It bases its calculations on the location of construction sites.
62. What does the underlined word “pinpointed” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Occupied. B. Adjusted. C. Rebuilt. D. Discovered.
63. The author believes a better understanding of the settlements on the seabed may ______.
A. attract investment in the research under the sea
B. inspire people to take an interest in modern technology
C. adapt the attitudes of the British to their country’s history
D. receive confirmation of rebuilding ancient man-made objects
64. We can learn that the use of bathymetry will help to ______.
A. identify new species of plants and animals
B. provide the precise location of sunken ships
C. evaluate the cost of seeking certain resources
D. promote the development of deeper waterways

In recent years the term “social distancing” has been at the center of public conversation. But it’s not “social” distance but physical separation that we are trying to promote. Preserving social ties—even at a distance—is essential for both mental and physical health.
65 Modern technology has provided us with many tools. Not all tools promote social connection equally, however. And often such seemingly small choices can make a big difference between strengthening stronger social connections and giving in to growing social distance.
66 When people overestimate the costs or underestimate the benefits of voice-based communication, it can create a misplaced bias (偏见) for text-based media. In one experiment, we tested whether the media through which people interact affect their sense of connection—and how expectations about certain technologies impact the communication media they choose to use. Although voice-based interactions (such as phone calls) can produce stronger connections, text-based media, such as e-mails, are often preferred.
We asked participants to connect with someone that they hadn’t interacted with recently, either through e-mail or over the phone. 67 They generally assumed that they’d feel more connected when interacting over the phone than over e-mail. But they also predicted that talking on the phone could be more uncomfortable than dashing off an e-mail. Although these participants believed that talking encouraged stronger bonds, most of them said they’d rather send an e-mail than call the person up. Fears about awkwardness push individuals toward text-based methods for communicating.
68 Then we followed up with them after they had done so. As expected, we found that people did form meaningfully stronger bonds when interacting over the phone than over e-mail. More importantly, though, there was no difference in the amount of discomfort when reconnecting on the phone. The human voice appears to provide benefits for connection.
Our work suggests that feelings of social connection are apparently facilitated by one’s voice rather than their keyboard. 69
A. So the next time you think about how best to connect, consider calling.
B. We again had participants actually connect using either e-mail or phone.
C. Participants first predicted what it would be like to get in touch in these two ways.
D. When they interact on the phone, they find they are more connected than in real life.
E. Those modes of communication are perfect choices at the time of physical distancing.
F. Then how might we best stay connected to others while maintaining physical distance?
G. Decisions on how to connect tend to be based on expectations of potential pros and cons of the Interaction.

Crystal breathed in the sweet January air. It was a cold, sunny day. Sunlight shone between the branches and fell onto the street.
It was so quiet, this neighborhood. Wandering down the road at a leisurely pace, Crystal noticed an open curtain in the window of one neighbor. They were busily typing on their home network. Remote workers, obviously.
Crystal's glance shifted to a kid who had just come home from school. He looked down to the cell phone in his hand.
“Hey, kid!” Crystal waved.
The boy didn't raise head, some game keeping his attention.
Crystal sighed and closed her eyes. It took her back to when she was a little girl back in the late 1980s. Neighbors knew each other by name then. Crystal's best friend Anne was the next door neighbor. They often played for hours using imaginary names for far-off places, pretending to be or do something they hoped someday they could be or do.
Nowadays, to pretend to be somewhere else, you could just click on some random program for a virtual reality video of Italy or Australia, and your wish was instantly satisfied. You could do that alone. And if you needed a person to chat with, you could pick a random person in your interest group online.
“You don't need neighbors anymore,” Crystal commented to herself.
And yet, there is so much that can be missed for the simpler times. Those who grow up not knowing the invisible person-to-person simplicity of being a good neighbor, have missed an entire piece in their maturity. It’s not about personal space. It's about being there for another person.
How could a metal chip replace a life? Crystal could never understand.
As she turned onto her home sidewalk, she noticed a little girl about 5 years old looking
confused and afraid. There was no coat on her thin arms. Must be some neighbor’s girl. Crystal was very concerned. Where were her parents?
“Are you alright, honey?” Crystal asked.
70. Why did the boy give no response to Crystal?
71. What did Crystal do with her next door neighbor in her childhood?
72. Decide which part of the following statement is wrong. Underline it and explain why.
Crystal believed that technology advanced and the relationship with neighbors mattered less than before.
73. What do you think the relationship between neighbors should be like nowadays?
(In about 40 words )
