The Wrestler Who Became an Author
Pete Watson looks like the biggest, sweetest teddy bear you ever saw.It is only when
he opens his mouth that you notice his missing front teeth. He is a three-time world
champion wrestler and now an author who has written several novels. However, what
impresses people most is not his status as a champion or an author, but his unique
understanding of wrestling.
Watson does not come from a traditional wrestling family. His father was an athletics
director with a PhD,while his mother was a physical education teacher. He was a big boy,
who was often bullied for his size. One day his neighbor had a go at him,and for the first
time Watson realized that he could use his weight and size instead of feeling awkward
about it.It was a turning point.
At college,he did a degree in communication studies.Meanwhile,he was learning
the ropes of professional wrestling. His parents did not object to his learning to wrestle.
They were just really insistent that he finished college."I am pretty sure that they thought
I'd get hurt and quit, but I didn't,"he said.Watson insisted on the training and enjoyed
every game.Once he said to his fans,"The process of the games is the most enjoyable
thing for me.It's good to have a lot of cheers during the games. They encourage me to do
it better..”
Some fans asked him what he thought of wrestling, for they wanted to know if he
had to be a good actor to become a good wrestler.Watson gave a definite answer."I used
to really dislike the acting label,"he said."But it is acting. When it's really good, when
you're feeling it and letting that real emotion fly,it comes closer to being real."
Now Watson has retired and devoted the time to his family and books-his next novel
is about boy wrestlers living on the same block. He does not think this life is so different
from wrestling."Wrestling is all about characters,"he says."So when my fans hear I've
written a novel,I don't get the sense that they feel I've abandoned them."
61.According to Paragraph 2,what was the turning point for Watson?
A.He became annoyed at his weight and size.
B.He decided to become an athletics director.
C.He dreamed to come from a wrestling family.
D.He began to fight back at those who hurt him.
62.How does Watson regard the idea that wrestling is like acting?
A.He has come to accept it.
B.He doesn't like the suggestion.
C.He believes good actors come from wrestlers.
D.He doesn't think wrestling can compare to acting
63.Watson's present life is not so different from his past profession because
A.his books are all about his past profession
B.his work is still connected with characters
C.his fans still follow his career with interest
D.his family gives him the same support as before

A new study shows students who write notes by hand during lectures perform better
on exams than those who use laptops.
7
Students are increasingly using laptops for note-taking because of speed and
legibility().But the research has found laptop users are less able to remember and
apply the concepts they have been taught.
Researchers performed experiments that aimed to find out whether using a laptop
increased the tendency to make notes"mindlessly"by taking down word for word what
the professors said
In the first experiment, students were given either a laptop or pen and paper. They
listened to the same lectures and were told to use their usual note-taking skills.Thirty
minutes after the talk, they were examined on their ability to remember facts and on how
well they understood concepts.
The researchers found that laptop users took twice as many notes as those who wrote
by hand. However, the typists performed worse at remembering and applying the concepts
Both groups scored similarly when it came to memorizing facts.
The researchers'report said,"While more notes are beneficial,if the notes are taken
mindlessly,as is more likely the case on a laptop, the benefit disappears."
In another experiment aimed at testing long-term memory, students took notes as
before but were tested a week after the lecture. This time, the students who wrote notes
by hand performed significantly better on the exam.
These two experiments suggest that handwritten notes are not only better for
inmmediate learning and understanding, but that they also lead to superior revision in the
future.

A.write more notes
B.digest concepts better
C.get higher scores
D.understand lectures better
65.While taking notes, laptop users tend to be
A.skillful

67.The passage is likely to appear in
A.a newspaper advertisement

Having spring around makes you feel different after such a long winter journey. The
power of sunshine brings us a lot of comfort,optimism,self-confidence and of course a
smile.Imagine how great it will be if we are so positive all year round!
Living like this is possible if you really think about it.In order to exist in such a state
of happiness,we must have sunshine radiating from within ourselves, shining from our
hearts, minds and souls.Actually, that's your choice, and if you think that way then your
own life will reflect that attitude of yours!
In order to make“sunshine”or rather“light'”part of our being,it is so important that
you watch your thoughts, your words and your actions so that you will accept what you
really feel you'd like to create in your own life.Watch your thoughts and really become
aware of how many negative thoughts pass through your mind about yourself and other
people around you.Watch to see how often you gossip (about other people,
which is actually often attached with feelings of jealousy and insecurity about yourself.
You are also supposed to take a close look at your "intention".How many of you do
something for another person without expecting to receive something in return? It might
not even have to be a material or physical thing you expect;expecting to be recognized
for what you have done is enough to create conditions on your intention.Think about it!
Putting all of these together,it seems that most of us are creating monsters inside us
just by simply talking, thinking and not putting our heart out with the right intention
towards helping someone else.If you take all your negative attitudes in one hand and
measure your need to feel"sunshine"in the other, you will see how both these elements
really contradict each other.
Be brave and break your patterns and your habits this spring, and by doing so,you
will allow the true sunshine to take place by radiating out from your heart and into your
life and the lives of the people around you!
68.You can have sunshine shining from your inside
A.by watching what you think, say and do
B.by helping someone else
C.by measuring what you need
D.by changing your intention
69.According to the writer, you don't feel secure about yourself when you
A.expect to be recognized for what you've done
B.take a close look at your intention
C.gossip about other people
D.become aware of your negative thoughts
70.What can be inferred from the passage?
A.Breaking our patterns is the most important to get true sunshine.
B.Expecting something in return for our help isn't the right intention.
C.If we don't intend to help others,we create monsters inside us.
D.Negative attitudes have little to do with happiness.
71.The passage is written mainly to
9
A.stress the importance of the positive lifestyle
B.analyze the intentions and thoughts in our mind
C.war us about the bad effects of negative attitudes
D.offer advice on having sunshine from our inside
D
Holidays are really important. Many of us will have childhood memories of summer
holidays where we were taken away from home to experience new environments and
learn in different ways.
But holidays are expensive and,for those on low wages or living on benefits, they
are often unobtainable.Even the cheapest holidays require travel and other additional
costs that are difficult for many families to meet.
For working parents, the long summer break can be a very difficult problem for
childcare. When an annual leave allowance amounts to only five weeks, there is a need
to spread this across the year.Couples can find themselves taking leave in turn in order
to care for children who are on holiday. For some, this makes even an affordable family
holiday difficult.
The schools that I visit in Nottingham are full of experienced staff committed to giving
our children a caring and inspiring learning environment. The number of children
receiving free school meals is quite large in Nottingham and many schools have breakfast
clubs to make sure that children get a healthy start to the day. Most schools undertake
programs of group or individual educational support.Schools also have an important role
in safeguarding children's welfare through the ongoing touch and support with their
pupils.During the long summer holidays, much of this is missed.
While teachers are holidaying in the UK,many of their pupils spend the whole six
weeks on the street where they live. The lack of free school meals for six weeks can result
in pressure on a family budget and an inability to afford the inspiring experiences that
help children to continue their learning.
In setting out its plans for a five-term year,Nottingham City Council (is
seeking to reduce the summer holiday down to four and a half weeks, with a more
balanced five terms of roughly eight weeks, each followed by a two-week break. We
believe this will give real "down time"for school staff and pupils alike but will be short
enough not to cause a real break in learning.
We acknowledge that this change may be difficult for some school staff, particularly
whose own children are educated in other authorities. However, this must be weighed
against the benefits for city children for whom we all have the greatest duty of care.
72.The underlined word"they"in the second paragraph refers to"
”
A.environments
B.holidays
C.wages
D.benefits
