As Simon walked home, he kept thinking about his science project. His parents were scientists, and Simon dreamed of becoming one, too. He had one week to complete his report on bees. He would work really hard on it. It was a chance to study the behavior of bees, which he always wanted to learn about.
Simon walked into the house and found his younger brother, Tom, playing on the floor with paper tubes (纸筒). “Simon, help me build a city!” Tom said. “Sorry, I need to do a report on bees and I haven’t got any idea yet.” Simon replied. He walked into the yard, hoping to find the old beehive (蜂窝). There it was, among the firewood. It smelled like dry leaves and each cell (巢室) was six-sided. “How do bees manage to do that? Can they count?” Simon wondered, as he walked back to the living room while studying the beehive.
Suddenly, a shout from Tom broke his thought, “Oh, no! I am destroying my city!” Tom had knocked over his water bottle and the water was running all over his paper tubes. Simon sighed, “It’s okay, Tom. Accidents happen.” He got down and started picking up the wet tubes, comforting his little brother. Holding them together, he noticed there was one tube in the middle, with six others around it. The wet center tube was pushed into six-sided, just like the cells of the beehive! Just to be sure, he tried to put five and then seven tubes around the centre tube, but neither way fits. Six was the only number that worked. He said aloud, “Bees just build round cells and stick the sides together. The cells have to be six-sided.” His idea was finally coming together.
Simon looked at Tom cheerfully, “Tom, I know what to write in the report. And now I will build a model beehive with your tubes! Will you help me?”
Tom, still in tears, looked up at Simon. “Really? You mean I can help?” He began picking out his finest tubes, a smile returning to his face.

April Fools’ Day is usually a pretty big deal around my house. Last year, my mom happened to see a doctor that day. So while she was out of the house, I decided to play a trick on Mom!”
Dad agreed. “She’ll be home around 6:00, so we’d better act fast.”
Then, with a smile, he pulled some “eyes” out of a bag. “What do you say we use some of these?”
We decided to stick two eyes on every apple in the fruit bowl.
“How about we put this little animal on a plate with some cheese?” Dad said, reaching into the bag again,
“That mouse looks totally real!” I said.
“We’d better prepare an extra-fancy dinner to make it up to her.” said Dad.
“Hey,” I said. “Speaking of extra-fancy food, do you think we have any gelatin (明胶) in the cupboard?
I just had an idea for some April Fools’ drinks!”
My idea ended up working perfectly, but it took a while longer than I’d expected. It was lucky Mom got home at 6: 25.
“Sorry I’m so late!” she said.
“No problem, honey!” said Dad. “You’re just in time for an extra-fancy dinner. Please have a seat right here, and your servers will bring out the first course.”
“My goodness,” she said as she sat down. “Is today a special day I forgot about?”
Indi siled. “Now close your eyes, because the first course is kind of a surprise.”
When mom opened her eyes, she was so surprised that she made the world’s funniest noise and jumped right out of her chair!
“April Fools!” we all said together.
Mom laughed and said, “You really got me!” Then, when she went to drink, she laughed even harder. “Hey!” she said, “My drink doesn’t want me to drink it!”
We ended up laughing all the way through dinner. Then Mom said, “All of this excitement almost made me forget that I picked up some ice cream from the store. Hang on, and I’ll get it.”
To be honest, I was feeling a bit suspicious (怀疑的). Mom isn’t very big on ice cream.
Anyway, as soon as we all took big bites, … “YUCK! ! !” Tex and Indi and I cried together. “April Fools!” Mom laughed. “There’s no ice cream in your bowls, just cream with salt on top!” “No fair (公平)!”said Indi.

Last weekend, I took Lucy to a park, where she discovered a track with large bumps (凸块) and sharp turns. At first, I thought Lucy was able to ride her bike along the track, but she quickly found that her bike was too low to the ground and kept getting stuck on top of the bumps.
Lucy looked at me with fear because she was still a biking newbie. I tried to encourage her, too, but really, I was thinking—this is going to be a disaster. Not because I thought she would get hurt. More because I thought she wouldn’t be able to pick up enough speed to balance, then get really discouraged, and give up quickly. I imagined her throwing her bicycle to the ground and then crying all the way home.
But I was only half right. Lucy did have a lot of trouble riding the bike. She couldn’t find her balance. She fell many times. At one point, she almost started crying because younger kids were getting angry that she was slowing everyone else down. But she did not give up. She kept picking herself up and trying again. She even took the bike off the track and into the main park to practice pushing off and picking up speed on a flat ground. When she felt more confident, she came back. Then she did it over and over again until she finally reached her goal of going around the whole track without falling once. Then she didn’t want to leave and everyone was cheering her on.
This was not a day that ended in a disaster. It was a day when Lucy learned that perseverance (毅力) pays off.

I will never forget a paper airplane match during my junior high school years.
In that match, each student would make a paper airplane, and then take turns throwing his or her airplane. The student whose airplane flew the farthest would win.
All the students were very interested when they heard the news. However, I was worried about how I could win. I did not play sports and was not very strong. But I loved airplanes and really wanted to win the match.

It kept flying, farther and farther. All the students couldn’t believe their eyes. With the students’ cheering, our teacher said that I was the winner.

“All’s fair on the first day of April!” Mom laughed.

1.Why was Lucy taken to the park last weekend?
A.To play with other kids. B.To discover a track for fun.

3.Which one is the right order of the events?

I will never forget a paper airplane match during my junior high school years.
In that match, each student would make a paper airplane, and then take turns throwing his or her airplane. The student whose airplane flew the farthest would win.
All the students were very interested when they heard the news. However, I was worried about how I could win. I did not play sports and was not very strong. But I loved airplanes and really wanted to win the match.
After school, I went to the store and bought lots of paper. When I got home, I ran into the backyard. I took a piece of paper and folded an airplane. It didn’t go very far and I felt sad. Then I folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. I didn’t give up. I kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when I used all the paper, I walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up.
On the match day, all the students came to the playground. Though I had fully prepared, I still felt nervous. Then it was my turn. I held my breath and threw the airplane with all my strength. It kept flying, farther and farther. All the students couldn’t believe their eyes. With the students’ cheering, our teacher said that I was the winner.

When I was called upon to share thoughts at the book club last month, I fell short. This time, I tried to keep my head in the reading game.

Wang Yongzhi, one of the famous rocket scientists who played a leading role in China’s manned spaceflight program, was awarded the Medal of the Republic in September, 2024, about three months after his passing away.
He was born into a poor family in Liaoning Province in 1932. He studied very hard when he was young. In 1952, he went to Tsinghua University. Under his leadership, China succeeded in its first manned spaceflight in 2003. For his contributions to China’s spaceflight program, Wang received the National Highest Science and Technology Award in the same year. Ten years ago, during the 15th Provincial Games of Zhejiang, a 10-year-old swimmer named Pan Zhanle made a surprising statement during an interview about his future goals: “Being faster than Sun Yang is enough.” At first, it considered as child’s joke, the young boy who dared to dream big. However, he proved himself in Chinese swimming history with his record-breaking performances at the Paris Olympics. On August 1st, he set a new world record of 46.40 seconds in the 100m freestyle final. Just four days later, he broke his own record with a 45.92s final leg in the men's 4x100m medley relay (混合接力赛).
From Wenzhou in Zhejiang, Pan was introduced to swimming by his parents from a young age. He was chosen by the Wenzhou Sports School at the age of seven. Wang Shi, acting as Pan’s coach at the school, recalled, “Back then, Pan was small in shape, not much of a talker, but spare no effort to train.”
“The more people doubt my abilities, the more determined (坚定的) I am to prove them wrong,” he said. Other children would slack off when they began to get tired while he could keep it up.
Success depends on what you’ve accumulated (积累) every day. Only if you’ve prepared enough can you catch the opportunity.
