Before we begin our class, i'd like to tell you a little bit about the workbook we will be using. The first thing i'd like to point out is that the workbook contains a very large amount of material, far more than you could ever handle in a single term. What you're supposed to do is to choose the experiment and activities that you want to do within a certain framework, of course. Next, i'd like to mention that in each workbook chapter, there are usually two parts. The first is called experiments, and the second is called activities. In the experiment part, the workbook gives full instructions for all of the experiments you may use the way you prefer. In the activities part, you will find suggestions for many experiments, exercises and projects that you can do in your own time. You'll see that there are usually no detailed instructions for the activities you're supposed to do them on your own way. OK, let's turn to chapter one now. Hello, i'm jude hander's. If you are like me,the words"wellness trend )will produce a Pavlovian response, where
you think you will hear something strange, like applying snail slime(蜗牛黏液)over the face..Does
that really work?To each his own,but because a good night's sleep and a daily run are all I need to feel
like myself,,Ican't really understand. So the rise of rucking(负重徒步)一hiking with a weighted
backpack came as a pleasant surprise.
When fitness fans think about rucking, they often point out that it's much slower and less intense
(than popular high intensity workouts,It makes me wonder:On top of the obvious mental
benefits of walking in nature, does rucking also provide meaningful physical benefits?
Michael Tschakovsky,an exercise scientist,says yes.Rucking is a low-impact activity that can
provide better resistance()training for muscles and bones than walking.More importantly,
unlike running, where about 50 percent of runners suffer an injury in any given year, rucking actually
helps make you less likely get injured.
Rucking is not a new activity;it has long been used as a military (training method for
developing physical and mental toughness. In fact,Jason McCarthy, the American man largely
responsible for popularizing rucking through the gear and apparel company GORUCK that he founded
in 2008,once served in the army.
Recently, many fitness influencers such as Dr Peter Attia and Dr Andrew Huberman have taken
up rucking and popularize its benefits. Many of us spend quite a lot of our day sitting.Long, weighted
hikes in the wild help us stay fit and clear our minds.
While military-grade rucking appears designed to push people to their physical limits, sometimes
requiring soldiers to carry their full body weight in a backpack, civilian rucking is much easier.
Beginners are recommended to start by carrying a backpack that weighs 10 to 15 percent of their body
weight, before working their way up and noticing small health benefits over time.
28.What is the author's attitude towards the majority of wellness trends?
A.Unconcerned.

A.The origins of rucking.
B.The benefits of rucking.
C.The ways to build muscles.

A.To stress his business success.

A.Start with proper weight.

Language is not just a tool for communication;it's also a playground for the mind.English,in
particular,is noted for its rich vocabulary and influence from many different languages, which provides
a great basis for creativity and humor. One example of this is the use of puns )the clever or
humorous use of a word that has more than one meaning,or of words that have different meanings but
sound the same.
Puns can be categorized ()into different types,Homophonic puns rely on word pairs that
sound alike but have different meanings, like"A bicycle can't stand on its own because it's two-tired."
Homographic puns use words that are spelled the same but have different meanings and sometimes
different pronunciations, for example,"I can't bear the weight of that bear."
Compound puns often combine homophonic and homographic elements, creating even more
complex wordplay, for example,"I was struggling to figure out how lightning works, but then it struck
me.”
The history of puns in English literature and culture is rich and interesting.Following their
development shows how language, culture, and humor have changed over time.Puns have been apart
of English literature from the early days, appearing in medieval (texts and Shakespeare's
plays, often used for humor or to show double meanings.During the Victorian Era,strict social norms
promoted the use of puns,as they allowed people to comment on issues subtly ()while avoiding
directness.Today, puns are widely used in advertising, television, and social media, reflecting how
English wordplay adapts to different contexts and media.
People's opinions of puns have changed throughout history,Once seen as a sign of cleverness, puns
were sometimes criticized (as low-level humor. However,in recent years, they've regained
popularity, largely because of the Internet and social media, which allow for quick sharing and
creativity in pun-based humor.

Everyone has things they're good at -and could potentially even be great at with a bit of effort
and time.36 Here's how to find your talents so you can improve them and put them to good use.
Try new things.
Exploring new activities is like opening doors to rooms you've never entered. Each new activity
offers a chance to discover something you're naturally good at.For example, you might sign up for a
pottery class and find you are good at shaping clay,or join a coding workshop and realize you have a
talent for problem-solving.37
Reflect on what you enjoy.
Your passions often show you what your talents are.Think about what activities you look forward
to or what hobbies make you lose track of time.38 For example,if you love drawing pictures, you
might be good at art.Or,if you enjoy putting things together and fixing them, you might be skilled in
mechanics(机械学)or engineering
39_
The requests you receive from other people can reveal what you're good at.If friends always turn
to you for help with their math problems, you likely have a talent for numbers. If they seek your advice
on personal matters, you might be great at understanding others and offering support.Pay attention to
these requests,as they can point out skills and talents that others naturally associate with you.Once you
find your talents, you can realize your potential.
Keep an open mind.
40 These thoughts can limit what you think you're capable of.Instead,be open to the idea that
you might have hidden talents in areas you've never explored before.By staying open, you'll be more
willing to try new activities and experiences,You may uncover skills and abilities that you didn't even
know you had.
A.Explore what you find easy.
B.Notice what people ask for your help with.
C.What you enjoy doing often points to your natural talents.
D.The key is not to be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
E.They often ask questions that make you think about your interests.
F.Avoid thinking things like"I'm not creative"or"I'm not good at sports".
G.If you don't think you have talents,it's probably because you haven't found them yet.

One possible version:
April 16 Wednesday Sunny
Today, I had a good time at the City Aquarium with my best friend.
As soon as we stepped in, we were surrounded by the wonders of the underwater world. There were numerous fish in different shapes and sizes, swimming in the large glass tanks. Some were so colorful that they looked like beautiful jewels. The most exciting part was the shark tunnel, where sharks swam above and beside us, making us feel like we were in the real ocean.
This visit was really unforgettable. It not only broadened my horizons about marine life but also made me realize the importance of protecting these precious creatures and their habitats.

M: Jane, how do you learn to spell those difficult words?
W: Well, my dad taught me different strategies. Actually, just seeing the words constantly was what I did it — it helped get them into my head. I had lots of them all stuck on the walls in my room. I always remember stuff that way.
(Text 5)
M: Mrs. Green asked us to make a video about the writer we choose and show it in class tomorrow.
W: How long has it got to be?
M: A minute. And we’ve got to give all the important information about the writer’s life and his or her novels.
(Text 6)
W: I love this jacket! Do you have another one just like it?
M: I’m afraid that’s the last one we have on large. Is there anything wrong with it?
W: (6) There’s a little dirt on the left sleeve. But I really like it a lot!
M: Well, if you buy the jacket as it is, (7) I can offer you a reduced price.
W: That’s OK then.
(Text 7)
M: Diana, can I talk to you for a minute? (8) I want to make sure I understand exactly what you want me to do before I get started.
W: Well, we’re going to be reprinting an old textbook. (9) I’d like you to review it and mark any places where changes need to be made.
M: OK, and how long do I have to do it?
W: I need it by the end of the day tomorrow, but I don’t think it will take you more than a few hours. (Text 8)
W: Good afternoon. Can I help you?
M: Yes, please. (10) Could you check if any packages from the airport have arrived for me please? I’m in room 219.
W: Sure. Let me see. No, I’m sorry it doesn’t look like there are any packages here.
M: Oh, no! That’s really too bad. I was expecting something from my boss.
W: I’m sorry. (12) If any packages do come in, I’ll let you know right away.
M: Thanks. Oh! I almost forgot. (11) I need to mail some letters. Do you happen to know where the nearest post office is? Or a mailbox?

W: What a mess, Sam! (13) On Saturday, I have to go on a picnic with my family. We plan to go to the park and have sandwiches and hot dogs and play some games.
M: That sounds fun, Judy. That doesn’t sound like a problem.
W: (14) The thing is I have to go to my aunt’s birthday party at her house later and need to be a little more formal. I don’t know where to go to change my clothes.
M: Can’t you and your parents go home to change?
W: No. My parents aren’t going to my aunt’s house after the picnic. They will go downtown for shopping. And you know my aunt’s house is in the other direction.
M: Aren’t there rooms to change at the park if you go swimming in the pool?
W: Yes, but I’m not going swimming.
M: (15) Sure, but what if you take a bag with more formal clothes and use one of the rooms to change?
W: Hey, (16) that’s the perfect solution.
(Text 10)
Hello! I’m Jude Henderson. (17) (18) Before we begin our class, I’d like to tell you a little bit about the workbook we will be using. The first thing I’d like to point out is that the workbook contains a very large amount of material, far more than you could ever handle in a single term. What you’re supposed to do is to choose the experiment and activities that you want to do, within a certain framework, of course. Next, I’d like to mention that in each workbook chapter there are usually two parts. The first is called Experiments and the second is called Activities. (19) In the experiment part, the workbook gives full instructions for all the experiments. You may use the way you prefer. In the activities part, you will find suggestions for many experiments, exercises and projects that you can do in your own time. (20) You’ll see that there are usually no detailed instructions for the activities. You’re supposed to do them on your own way. OK, let’s turn to Chapter One now.

Sweden is one of the world’s northernmost countries. In the country, you are sure to notice that there isn’t much rubbish in the streets. This is because a love of nature is deeply fixed in the hearts of all Swedish people, and their respect for nature has created an environmentally friendly society.
The Swedish like being out in nature and they know what we need to do to protect nature and the environment. They know they are supposed to recycle (回收利用) and reuse things instead of throwing them outdoors.
Sweden is so good at recycling that, for several years, it has imported (进口) rubbish from other countries to keep its recycling factories going. Why do other countries send waste to Sweden? Their looking after the environment.
Over time, Sweden has developed a national recycling policy. Even though private companies are in charge of most of the business of importing and burning waste, the energy produced during the process goes into a national heating network to heat homes through the cold winter.
Sweden is one of the first countries to put a heavy tax (税) on fossil fuels (化石燃料) like coal, oil and natural gas. It plans to become world's first country to fully stop using them. If you are like me, the words “wellness trend (趋势)” will produce a Pavlovian response, where you think you will hear something strange, like applying snail slime (蜗牛黏液) over the face. Does that really work? To each his own, but because a good night’s sleep and a daily run are all I need to feel like myself, I can’t really understand. So the rise of rucking (负重徒步) — hiking with a weighted backpack — came as a pleasant surprise.
When fitness fans think about rucking, they often point out that it’s much slower and less intense (强烈的) than popular high intensity workouts, It makes me wonder: On top of the obvious mental benefits of walking in nature, does rucking also provide meaningful physical benefits?
Michael Tschakovsky, an exercise scientist, says yes. Rucking is a low-impact activity that can provide better resistance(抵抗) training for muscles (肌肉) and bones than walking. More importantly, unlike running, where about 50 percent of runners suffer an injury in any given year, rucking actually helps make you less likely get injured.
Rucking is not a new activity; it has long been used as a military (军事的) training method for developing physical and mental toughness. In fact, Jason McCarthy, the American man largely responsible for popularizing rucking through the gear and apparel company GORUCK that he founded in 2008, once served in the army.
Recently, many fitness influencers such as Dr Peter Attia and Dr Andrew Huberman have taken up rucking and popularize its benefits. Many of us spend quite a lot of our day sitting. Long, weighted hikes in the wild help us stay fit and clear our minds.
While military-grade rucking appears designed to push people to their physical limits, sometimes requiring soldiers to carry their full body weight in a backpack, civilian rucking is much easier. Beginners are recommended to start by carrying a backpack that weighs 10 to l5 percent of their body weight, before working their way up and noticing small health benefits over time.
28. What is the author’s attitude towards the majority of wellness trends?
A. Unconcerned. B. Curious.
C. Supportive. D. Doubtful.
29. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The origins of rucking. B. The benefits of rucking.
C. The ways to build muscles. D. The types of resistance training.
30. Why does the author mention Jason McCarthy?
A. To stress his business success. B. To introduce GORUCK’S history.
C. To explain rucking's military connection. D. To describe his role in fitness trends.
31. What are beginners advised to do?
A. Start with proper weight. B. Try military-grade rucking.
C. Depend on experts’ guidance. D. Choose a pair of lightweight shoes.
D
Language is not just a tool for communication; it’s also a playground for the mind. English, in particular, is noted for its rich vocabulary and influence from many different languages, which provides a great basis for creativity and humor. One example of this is the use of puns (双关语)the clever or humorous use of a word that has more than one meaning, or of words that have different meanings but sound the same.
Puns can be categorized (分类) into different types, Homophonic puns rely on word pairs that sound alike but have different meanings, like “A bicycle can’t stand on its own because it’s two-tired.” Homographic puns use words that are spelled the same but have different meanings and sometimes different pronunciations, for example, “I can’t bear the weight of that bear.”
Compound puns often combine homophonic and homographic elements, creating even more complex wordplay, for example, “I was struggling to figure out how lightning works, but then it struck me.”
The history of puns in English literature and culture is rich and interesting. Following their development shows how language, culture, and humor have changed over time. Puns have been apart of English literature from the early days, appearing in medieval (中世纪的) texts and Shakespeare's plays, often used for humor or to show double meanings. During the Victorian Era, strict social norms promoted the use of puns, as they allowed people to comment on issues subtly (巧妙地)while avoiding directness. Today, puns are widely used in advertising, television, and social media, reflecting how English wordplay adapts to different contexts and media.
People’s opinions of puns have changed throughout history, Once seen as a sign of cleverness, puns were sometimes criticized (批评) as low-level humor. However, in recent years, they've regained popularity, largely because of the Internet and social media, which allow for quick sharing and creativity in pun-based humor.
32. What does the first sentence in paragraph l mainly show?
A. The development of language over time.
B. The difficulty of learning a new language.
C. The creative and playful aspect of language.
D. The different functions of language in daily life.
33. Which of the following contains a homographic pun?
A. You can call a bee from America a USB.
B. Six is afraid of seven because seven ate nine.
C. Time flies like an arrow; fruit flies like a banana.
D. I only know 25 letters of the alphabet; I don't know Y.
34. What was the major purpose of using puns in the Victorian Era?
A. To break social rules. B. To express ideas indirectly.
C. To spread different opinions. D. To make communication easier.
35. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The rise and fall of the popularity of puns.
B. The new changes of language in recent years.
C. The relationship between language and society.
D. The influence of social media on modern humor.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 满分10分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Everyone has things they're good at —and could potentially even be great at with a bit of effort and time. 36 Here's how to find your talents so you can improve them and put them to good use.
Try new things.
Exploring new activities is like opening doors to rooms you’ve never entered. Each new activity offers a chance to discover something you’re naturally good at. For example, you might sign up for a pottery class and find you are good at shaping clay, or join a coding workshop and realize you have a talent for problem-solving. 37
Reflect on what you enjoy.
Your passions often show you what your talents are. Think about what activities you look forward to or what hobbies make you lose track of time. 38 For example, if you love drawing pictures, you might be good at art. Or, if you enjoy putting things together and fixing them, you might be skilled in mechanics (机械学) or engineering.
39
The requests you receive from other people can reveal what you’re good at. If friends always turn to you for help with their math problems, you likely have a talent for numbers. If they seek your advice on personal matters, you might be great at understanding others and offering support. Pay attention to these requests, as they can point out skills and talents that others naturally associate with you. Once you find your talents, you can realize your potential.
Keep an open mind.
40 These thoughts can limit what you think you’re capable of. Instead, be open to the idea that you might have hidden talents in areas you’ve never explored before. By staying open, you’ll be more willing to try new activities and experiences, You may uncover skills and abilities that you didn’t even know you had.
A. Explore what you find easy.
B. Notice what people ask for your help with.
C. What you enjoy doing often points to your natural talents.
D. The key is not to be afraid to step out of your comfort zone.
E. They often ask questions that make you think about your interests.
F. Avoid thinking things like “I’m not creative" or “I’m not good at sports”.
G. If you don't think you have talents, it's probably because you haven’t found them yet.

Hello!I'm Jude Henderson.(17)(18)Before we begin our class,I'd like to tell you a little bit
about the workbook we will be using. The first thing I'd like to point out is that the workbook
contains a very large amount of material, far more than you could ever handle in a single term. What
you're supposed to do is to choose the experiment and activities that you want to do,within a certain
framework,of course.Next,I'd like to mention that in each workbook chapter there are usually two
parts. The first is called Experiments and the second is called Activities.(19)In the experiment part,
the workbook gives full instructions for all the experiments. You may use the way you prefer. In the
activities part, you will find suggestions for many experiments, exercises and projects that you can
do in your own time.(20)You'll see that there are usually no detailed instructions for the activities.
You're supposed to do them on your own way.OK,let's turn to Chapter One now.
