Interviewer: Thank you for taking the time to talk to me today, Molly. First, could you please tell me a little about your most recent volunteer experience?
Molly: Sure. I spent a month taking part in a charity programme for those made homeless in the earthquake in western China. At least a third of the structures in the disaster area were badly damaged.
struc·ture /ˈstrʌktʃə(r)/ 结构体;(尤指)建筑物
Even though the repairing and rebuilding were already underway when I arrived, progress was quite slow. I was on the team that assisted with repairing the local hospital.
Interviewer: That must have been very rewarding. What inspired you to volunteer to help the victims of the earthquake?
Molly: As someone who had lived through a natural disaster myself, I was especially sympathetic to the suffering of others. The genuine kindness I received from friends and strangers inspired me to do the same for those in need.

Interviewer: So you were motivated by your own experience. How did you feel about your volunteer work?
Molly:Working with my fellow volunteers and members of the local community allowed me to feel a deep respect for everyone involved. I met many amazing people, from the innocent victims dedicated to rebuilding their lives to the enthusiastic volunteers committed to helping them.

△What I enjoyed most was that I woke up each day with a sense of purpose, knowing that it was for a good cause.
Interviewer: Sounds great! But were there any hardships that you had to cope with?
Molly: Well, during my stay there, I lived in temporary accommodation with poor facilities. There was often no electricity and sometimes a shortage of food.

However, these physical hardships were nothing compared to great emotional strain I felt. It really upset me to watch people suffer terrible losses on a daily basis. Nonetheless, it was under these circumstances that I became more aware of the meaning of my service.
Interviewer: I’m sure you’ve made a difference to those you helped. Thank you, Molly, for sharing your experience with me.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’ ” asked Martin Luther King, Jr., a great advocate for social justice. In asking this question, King called on us to reflect upon our responsibility for society, and consequently put great effort into the worthy cause of serving our fellow human beings.人类同胞

For most people, there are the traditional types of volunteering that are done within one’s community, such as volunteering at children’s homes or collecting data
about the local animal and plant life to assist with conservation efforts. However, volunteering is not just limited to local opportunities. With virtual volunteering,
which takes advantage of the Internet, we can serve others in the comfort of our own homes. 在自己家里舒舒服服地

limit·ed (to sth) /ˈlɪmɪtɪd/ 受(…的)限制
For example, volunteers can translate documents into different languages or help students with their schoolwork online. There is also an unusual type of volunteering called voluntourism, a combination of volunteering and tourism, which allows us to serve people in need when we travel to other regions or countries.
With all these different ways to serve others, a common question arises: what benefits can volunteering provide us with? Firstly, volunteering makes us feel an emotional connection to the community.
We are willing to devote our time and effort unconditionally to helping build a better community. Secondly, volunteering is good for our physical and mental health. Our stress levels are reduced when we do meaningful volunteer work, which further enables us to sleep better or get sick less often. We also gain a sense of purpose in life and become happier.Thirdly, volunteering offers us an amazing opportunity to learn valuable skills.
stress /stres/ 精神压力;心理负担;紧张
We meet new people, expand our relationship network and improve our social skills. We are always placed in situations that require us to learn new skills and challenge ourselves by stepping outside our comfort zone.
No matter whether you volunteer at a non-profit organization or in the community, all of the volunteer work makes you a better person, improves other people’s quality of life and has a huge impact on the world. This is ultimately why we serve. place使(人)处于某位置;安置;安顿

C.In pairs, have a discussion about volunteering. Use the following questions and expressions to help you. Page 38
• Why do people volunteer?
• What types of volunteer work are there?
• Have you worked as a volunteer or have you heard of stories about volunteering? Share with your partner.

Possible answer
A: I think when we devote time and effort to serving others unconditionally,we develop an emotional connection to the community and feel motivated to
improve it.
B: True. Volunteering also makes us happy by giving us a sense of purpose, which results in lower stress levels, better sleep and even a lower risk of developing
diseases. Better still, we learn new valuable skills when we place ourselves in unfamiliar situations.
A: Definitely. Volunteering for a local conservation project may require us to do things we’ve never done before such as collecting data about the local animal and plant life.
B: You’re right. Interestingly, thanks to the Internet, people can now do virtual volunteering in the comfort of their homes. I’ve seen an online volunteering effort that connects blind and low-vision individuals with sighted people. It helps them find their way in new surroundings through a live video call. 视频通话 low-vision视力低下

A: That’s amazing! There’s also voluntourism, where tourists make a commitment to volunteering while travelling. In fact, during our last holiday, my family were voluntourists in one of the villages we visited.
B: What did you do there?
A: We helped plant some trees to protect an area that was damaged by soil erosion and was experiencing extreme flooding during the rainy season.

B: Wow, that’s really meaningful! I’m sure you felt good to know you were making a difference to that area.
A: Indeed! It was worthwhile to see the joy on the villagers’ faces and know our volunteer efforts brought a great deal of comfort and relief to them. I felt glad that our volunteer work could improve their quality of life, while also making me a better person.
B: I totally agree! Volunteers contribute to the development and well-being of those they serve. Their actions are long-lasting and life-changing for all involved.
D.Write an article on volunteering. Use your ideas from part C and the information in parts A and B to help you. Check and improve your writing after you finish it. Page 38
Possible answer
Volunteering: living and learning
What is volunteering? Volunteering occurs when we give our time and efforts for free to do an activity that benefits others or the environment. Importantly, the act of volunteering must be a choice.
Volunteer activities offer a variety of choices and come in many forms. Volunteers can choose activities they find familiar, or the ones that are challenging. For instance, someone in the medical field may volunteer at a care home for the elderly or join an environment conservation project. Thanks to the Internet, volunteering done in the comfort of our homes is also possible. For example, sighted volunteers can help guide blind and low-vision people through a live video call.
care home疗养院
Volunteering can also be part of our holiday. Known as voluntourism, this type of volunteering lets tourists volunteer while travelling. Volunteers can choose what they prefer, from planting trees to teaching a foreign language.
The choice to volunteer is motivated by various factors. Besides creating an emotional connection to our community, volunteering keeps us physically and
mentally healthy. Doing meaningful work reduces stress levels, which helps us sleep better and get sick less often.
By helping others, we also gain a sense of purpose and feel happier. Additionally, doing various volunteer activities lets us meet new people, expand our relationship network and improve our social skills.
When Martin Luther King, Jr. asked, “What are you doing for others?”, he might not have been specifically referring to becoming a volunteer. However, volunteering, which involves willingly contributing time and energy to the
development and well-being of others, could be the perfect answer.
