American teenager Rain Price was waved off (挥手) to school from the bus stop outside his house, by his dad, every day for a whole school year. OK, so that doesn’t sound too bad, but this was no ordinary goodbye, because each day Rain’s dad did it while wearing a different fancy-dress costume (服装)!
It all started on Rain’s first day of high school. Like many proud parents, Rochelle and Dale, Rain’s parents, sent him off to school with a big wave. Feeling himself no longer a little kid, Rain found it quite embarrassing. That evening he said how unhappy he was when they waved him off. Then Dale had a great idea.
The next morning, as Rain stepped onto the school bus, he could hear his school friends laughing. He was shocked to find that his dad was waving him off, dressed as an American football player, complete with a ball and helmet. For the rest of the school year, Dale waved goodbye dressed in different costumes. One day he was a king, the next a cook, the following Wonder Woman.
Amazingly, Dale only spent $50 on all of the costumes. He got most of them from the family fancy-dress collection and then several friends and neighbors were happy to help.
Most of Rain’s classmates looked forward to seeing what Dale would be wearing every day. Even Rain finally realized how cool his dad was.
On the last day of school, Dale dressed up as a pirate (海盗) and stood next to a sign which said, “It’s been fun waving at the bus. Have a great summer.”

The first thing Kelsey saw at the front doors of school in the morning was a huge paper stretching from floor to ceiling. On the paper was a large chart (图表), with a column for every class in the school. The columns were waiting to be colored in as students started reading. Next to the chart were two smaller squares of paper. One had the date on it: April 1, and the other had the number of books read so far by everybody in the school: 0.
If Kelsey had finished The Secret Garden last night, she could have been the first student at school to complete a book.
After the bell rang and the students were all in their seats, Mrs. Molina asked, “Did anyone finish a book last night?”
Only one hand went up.
Simon Ellis.
Kelsey hoped it was an April Fool’s Day joke, but it wasn’t.
“Excellent, Simon!” Mrs. Molina said. “I’ll report our class total to Mr. Boone every morning, so we have one book read so far. Class, I want all of you to follow Simon’s example.”
How Kelsey wished she hadn’t been to Dylan’s band concert. Otherwise (否则) Mrs. Molina could have said, “I want you to follow Simon and Kelsey’s example.”
Mrs. Molina then showed the class some paper. “These are our bookworms. When you finish a book, take one of these bookworms. On it, write your name and the name of your book and put it in the box.”

I arrived in the UK weeks ago and would stay to receive further study in English. I made quite a few friends and experienced some traditional English food. However, after having several days of hamburgers, sandwiches and tomatoes, I made a conclusion (下结论) that nothing could be more delicious than Chinese food, especially my favorite—huo guo. You just can’t imagine how excited I was getting when someone notified me that there was going to be a free meal of hotpot to welcome all the new students. On the way to the restaurant, I seemed to smell huo guo in the air.
Much to my surprise, when I went into the room, I didn’t see any sign of huo guo. Where was it? With many questions in my head, I sat down to have the free meal. After talking with an English girl, I got to know that Chinese huo guo is completely different from hotpot. Hot pot, two words, is Chinese huo guo; and hotpot, one word, is a traditional English dish.
People use mutton (羊肉) to make hotpot. On the top are pieces of potatoes. Most of the time, onion (洋葱) is also needed. People put the food in the oven (炉) all day in a heavy pot on a low heat. It takes very little effort to prepare. You can often see hotpot at parties in the UK because it’s easy to prepare for a large number of people and is not expensive.
Hotpot doesn’t taste bad. However, I still miss huo guo—hot pot, two words!

Last year, my parents took me on a very special holiday. My dream was to see some real snow, so during the winter holiday, we took our passports and flew over the Pacific to Calgary, Canada. We took a bus to a ski resort (度假圣地) in the Canadian Rockies.
As the bus climbed through the mountains, we saw the thick snow on the trees. I was dying to get out and play with it! At last, we reached the resort and quickly jumped out of the bus. This was our first experience with snow. We were like little children—we made snowballs, and threw them at one another! Then we checked in at the hotel. We could see the ski slope (斜坡) opposite the hotel. We could not wait to get out and ski.
The next day, we put on our ski suits and gloves, took our skis and went outside onto the snow. Wearing skis for the first time made me feel strange. Suddenly I found myself unable to walk! Then we had a skiing lesson with a young couple. Our coach took us to a gentle slope, and showed us some basic skills. To be honest, that first lesson was not a great success. I kept on falling over, and I had to hold on to a rope to keep my balance. However, on the third day, I only fell over a few times, and I managed to do a few rapid runs. I felt pleased with myself, and my coach told me I was doing much better. Although it was very cold, I spent most of my holiday skiing. I had a wonderful time.
It was all over too soon. It was a shame, but we had to leave. I wish my parents would take me back here next year.

Like many foreigners, I only knew two words of Chinese (“hello” and “thank you”) when I came to China. As you can probably guess, my life was difficult for a while after I arrived. Simple tasks like ordering food or taking a taxi were quite hard for me.
I knew I had to learn more Chinese, so I signed up for a class. My teacher was very helpful, although I didn’t learn enough to have a real conversation. Later, I studied on my own as well, but my progress was still slow. I became very frustrated (沮丧的).
Finally, I found that the best way to learn Chinese is to make friends with native speakers and spend time with them. Around this time, I started playing in a band with a Chinese woman who became one of my best friends in Beijing. I learned a lot of Chinese by hanging out (出去消遣) with her.
For example, she taught me a lot of words about music, such as “melody (旋律)”. She learned a lot of English from me in return, so it was a good way to exchange language and culture. She is still one of my best friends and we talk to each other nearly every day.
I’ve learned enough Chinese to take care of complicated (复杂的) tasks, such as booking train tickets and chatting with my landlord (房东). However, going to the bank and understanding technological vocabulary are still tough for me.

When the world-famous writer J. K. Rowling gave a speech at Harvard University, some may have been a little surprised by the topic she chose, “The Benefits of Failure”.
Rowling’s first novel was rejected (拒绝) by 12 publishers before it was finally published. However, it was this experience that helped her to succeed, “Failure taught me things about myself that I could have learnt no other way. I discovered that I had a strong will, and more self-control than I had expected.”
Even Bill Gates has experienced failure. His first company was called Traf-O-Data, but unluckily, its product didn’t work. It was a total disaster. But what Gates learnt from this experience helped lay the groundwork for the global success that is now Microsoft. It takes the leading position in personal-computer software (软件) systems. He didn’t make the same mistake twice.
Ang Lee, a worldwide-famous director, wasn’t successful at first. Twice failing the college entrance examination at home, Lee turned to study drama in the US. However, he had no opportunities to direct a film and his plays were rejected by more than 30 companies. During six years with no income (收入), he had to depend on his wife. In the end, with his wife’s support, he stuck to his dream. All his efforts finally paid off.
All these people share something in common. At hard times in their lives, they showed grit (毅力). It’s the love for something, the hard-work, and sticking with it. So, how can we become “grittier”? This is where the importance of failure comes in. If we can learn how to manage failure, we’ll learn how to succeed. By working through a series of failures, we’re better prepared for the bigger challenges—we’ll have true grit.

One winter morning, Tapiwa Chiwewe was driving to work in Johannesburg, South Africa. He noticed a haze (薄雾) hanging over the city and it didn’t take long for him to realize that it was the pollution we suffered.
At that moment, Chiwewe felt an urge to do something about it, but didn’t know what. He was a computer engineer and knew little about environmental science.
He first did research on air pollution and found that it is the world’s biggest environmental health risk. He decided to work on it in a cooperative (合作的) way. He talked to scientists, officials, and engineers who helped him develop a deeper understanding of the situation, as well as an idea to improve it.
Through years of work. Chiwewe and his coworkers from South Africa and China created an online air quality decision support system (系统). Based on historical and real-time data, the system can correctly predict (预测) air pollution and air quality, which can help people make better decisions about their daily movements, as well as help officials better manage their operations.
Chiwewe learned an important lesson—“a lesson we all need to take into heart if we are to work towards a better future. Even if you’re not an expert in a particular field, your outside expertise may hold the key to solving problems within that field,” he said.
What if Chiwewe hadn’t worried to research the problem and do something about it? What if he had just hoped that someone, somewhere, was taking care of the matter?

Last Friday, our class held a special and meaningful activity—working in the field. The purpose of the activity was to give us a chance to experience farm life and improve our skills. We were excited when we heard the news.
Guided by our teachers, we took part in the activity. Every eight students prepared their farming tools—together as a group, which played a key role in developing their ability to work with each other. Then, following a process including lining, turning, stepping and leveling the land, we managed to create an excellent environment for the growth of vegetables. Although there were challenges like the hard soil and heavy tools, these could be seen as chances to build up both our bodies and willpower (意志力). At the end of the day, we students mastered the skill of building cucumber frames (黄瓜架). It seemed easy to make them, but in fact, it was quite difficult to make them stand upright.
Although it might be tiring, we enjoyed the simple joy of farming. “There couldn’t be a better chance to enjoy the beauty of farming, which enhanced (增强) my responsibility to value the fruit of others’ labor and improved my skills,” said Liu Li, one of my classmates.
