The Merchant of Venice is a famous play written by William Shakespeare. It tells the story of a Venetian merchant named Antonio who borrows money from a Jewish moneylender named Shylock.
Antonio’s friend, Bassanio, needs money to marry a woman named Portia. Antonio agrees to borrow the money from Shylock on the condition that if he cannot repay the money, Shylock can take a pound of his flesh.
Meanwhile, Portia’s father has left a will stating that any man who wishes to marry her must choose the correct casket out of three, one gold, one silver, and one lead. Many men have tried and failed, but Bassanio correctly chooses the lead casket and wins Portia’s hand in marriage.
Back in Venice, news reaches Antonio that his ships, which were carrying his goods and making him money, have been lost at sea. He is unable to repay his debt to Shylock, who demands his pound of flesh as agreed.
Portia, disguised as a lawyer, arrives in Venice to help Antonio. She argues that Shylock must take it without losing any blood, as stated in their agreement. Shylock is forced to give up his claim, and Antonio is saved.
The story of the merchant of Venice teaches us the importance of friendship, forgiveness, and the power of true love.

Portia asked Antonio if he had something to say before receiving the penalty (惩罚). He just wanted to say goodbye to Bassanio and ask him to tell Portia that Antonio was a good friend. Bassanio felt sad that his best friend was facing death because of borrowing money to help him. Antonio, however, considered himself lucky, as he would never become old or sick.
Bassanio said he would do anything he could to save Antonio. He would rather die or give up his wife if it could help Antonio.
His wife, Portia, disguised (伪装) as the judge, was not happy to hear this. “Let me know the judgement (判决)!” Shylock shouted.
Portia said, “You have the right to take one pound of the merchant’s flesh (肉)! That is what the contract (合同) says.”
Shylock held his knife and told Antonio to get ready.
“Wait!” exclaimed (大喊) Portia. “You will not do anything that is not written in the contract. Is that right, Shylock?”
“Yes, that’s right,” replied Shylock.
“Well,” said the young judge, “the contract does not say anything about taking his blood. You can’t take even one drop of his blood. If you do that, all of your wealth will be taken!”
Now it was Graziano’s turn to praise the wisdom of the judge. “Do you hear that, Shylock?” Portia asked,
“You want justice (公平),” Portia said to Shylock, “and you will get it. In fact, you’ll receive more justice than you ask for.”
“I’m willing to accept your money. Give me ninety thousand dollars,” Shylock said. He began to feel sick. Bassanio was happy to give him the money, Portia, however, had more to say.
“Wait!” the judge said again. “It was not written in the contract. Shylock said that he would not do anything that was not in the contract.”
“Just give me the money I lent you. I won’t even ask for interest,” Shylock said. Bassanio was ready to give it to him, but Portia stopped him again.
Shylock knew that he would not get one pound of flesh or his money. He decided to go home.
“Wait!” said Portia, for the third time. “The law of Venice says that if you plan to kill any citizen (公民) of Venice, you will lose everything that you own. Half of what you have will belong to (属于) the person you try to kill, and the other half will belong to the duke (公爵). Moreover, the duke is the only one who can save you from death if he chooses to show the mercy (仁慈). You should ask him for mercy.”
“I will show you what it means to be merciful,” said the duke. Shylock felt really sick at that time.

Bassanio was right about Portia. She was young, beautiful, and rich, and she was not married. However, like Antonio, she was unhappy and tired. She had a maid (女仆) called Nerissa, and Nerissa told her that people can get sick from having too much as easily as they get sick from not having enough.
“Those are wise words, Nerissa,” Portia told her.
“Wise words are not much good if nobody takes any notice,” replied Nerissa.
“That’s true,” agreed Portia, “but if it were as easy to do something as it is to say it, then poor people would live in palaces. I can easily teach twenty people what to do, but it is much more difficult to be one of the twenty people who follow my own teaching!”
Portia was unhappy because she wanted a husband, but her father’s will (遗嘱) stopped her from choosing one that she liked. At the same time, it stopped her from refusing one that she did not like. Her father had arranged a kind of guessing game for men who came to court (求婚) his daughter. There were three boxes. Each one had something written on it. Every suitor (求婚者) had to choose a box. Portia’s father thought the right man would understand the meaning of the three boxes and choose the right one. The man who chose the right box could marry Portia, but if a man chose the wrong box, he would never marry anyone at all.
Her first suitor was a Prince (王子) from Naples. Portia did not like him because he talked about cats all the time. He didn’t seem to know about anything except cats, and nothing else interested him. Portia did not like cats.
Her second suitor was a Count (伯爵). Portia did not like him because he always looked sad or angry—or both. He never looked happy, and she was afraid that when he got old, he would be a very unhappy husband for her.
Her third suitor was a French Lord (贵族). Portia did not like him because he did not have his own way of thinking. He tried to be just like every person he met. She thought it would be like having twenty husbands, and she couldn’t love him at all.

When Antonio told Bassanio to go to town and borrow money, Bassanio visited Shylock. He asked Shylock to lend him thirty thousand dollars and said he would pay it back in three months.
“How do I know you can pay it back?” asked Shylock.
Bassanio smiled. “My friend Antonio will help me. If I do not pay you in three months, he will do it for me.”
Now it was Shylock’s turn to smile. Perhaps this would be a chance for him to hurt his enemy in some way. “I understand that Antonio has some ships in different parts of the world,” he said, “and that when they come back, he will have plenty of money. However, there are many risks in his business. There are pirates (海盗), and there are storms, and everything could be lost. But I am not worried about him because I know that Antonio is a good man. Thirty thousand dollars is a lot of money, but I believe he will help you.”
Shylock went to visit Antonio. When he saw Antonio, he remembered how much he hated him. However, he did not show his hatred (仇恨). He tried to be friendly.
“It is thirty thousand dollars for three months, isn’t it?” he asked.
Antonio and Bassanio agreed.
“What interest (利息) will you pay?” he asked.
After that, Antonio and Shylock were arguing about interest. Antonio called Shylock some bad names.
“He looks like a good apple,” he told Bassanio, “but inside he is rotten.”
Bassanio was worried. Perhaps Shylock would not lend him the money, so he spoke to Antonio. Antonio was sorry.
“Would you still lend us the money?” Antonio asked Shylock.
“Come with me to the judge,” said Shylock, “so that he can write the contract (契约). I will lend you thirty thousand dollars for three months. You will pay no interest. Just for fun, however, let’s agree that if you do not pay me on time, you will give me one pound of your flesh (肉) from wherever I choose to take it!”
Antonio agreed. He even told Bassanio that he thought Shylock was kind because he was not making them pay interest, but Bassanio did not agree.
“I won’t let you do that for me,” he insisted. “The risk is too big. I would rather stay poor and in debt (欠债).”

“Look! I’m not asking you a favour. You can charge me any interest (利息) you want. I don’t mind. My ships will arrive any day now.”
“Alright, Antonio. I’m willing to lend you the money. I won’t even charge you any interest. Just pay me back on time.”
Antonio couldn’t believe his ears. “______”
“I said you didn’t know me. I will help you. I won’t even charge you a single ducat (达克特,以前欧洲的一种钱币). However, there is something I’m worried about. What if you don’t pay me back?”
“Don’t worry, Shylock. I’ll pay you back.”
“Well, I need some kind of a guarantee, don’t I? Three thousand ducats is a lot of money. If you don’t pay me back on time, I want a pound of flesh (肉). I’ll take a pound of flesh from any part of your body.”
Antonio didn’t like what Shylock said. “No. I’d rather pay some interest if I’m late on the payment.”
“I’m afraid that’s no good,” said Shylock as he laughed. “Do you think I’d take money from another moneylender? Besides, this agreement is only a joke! Do you think that any lawyer or judge would believe me? Would they really believe that I want a pound of your flesh? You don’t have to worry about anything!”
Antonio agreed to the conditions. They went to a lawyer and signed an agreement.

The young judge asked Shylock to be mercy on Antonio, but shylock disagreed. Shylock said, “I will show no mercy. I want justice, the penalty written in the contract!” Bassanio wanted to give Shylock ten times the money Antonio borrowed, even including his hands, heads or heart. This time, Portia disagreed. She thought they couldn’t change the law of Venice. They must obey it. Portia asked Antonio to prepare his body for Shylock’s knife. Shylock was very happy. He said the judge was much older in wisdom than in years.
At that moment, Bassanio remembered Antonio borrowed money from Shylock to help him court Portia. His friend was going to die. Bassanio would do anything to save his friend. He would die in his place or give up his wife if it could help. On the other hand, Antonio felt happy. He said he was lucky because he would never grow old and sick. He comforted Bassanio.
But Shylock’s dream didn’t come true. Portia said Shylock could take Antonio’s pound of flesh, but he could not take any blood, or he would lose everything. Shylock decided not to take the flesh but ninety thousand dollars. Portia disagreed. Shylock said he just wanted his own money back without charging the interest. Portia still disagreed. She said according to the law, if anyone planned to kill a citizen of Venice, he would lose everything. And the duke was the only person who could save him from death. The duke said Shylock must first become a Christian. If Shylock didn’t do so, the duke would not have mercy on him, and Shylock would die. Shylock realized he had no choice. He agreed.

Shylock was still angry about his daughter, Jessica, and the news for him was not good, either. He paid people to look for her, but they could not find her. They came back with news about his money she had spent and his jewels (珠宝) she had sold. All this made Shylock angrier and angrier.

Then Antonio would not be able to take business away from him any longer because he would be dead.
The news got worse for Antonio. He lost another ship in a storm near Tripoli. It was a very large ship and its cargo was very valuable. The ship and its cargo sat at the bottom of the sea. The news soon came to Venice, and Shylock was happier than ever. Now he would have revenge (复仇) on his old enemy. He looked forward to taking one pound of Antonio’s flesh.
“You will not take a pound of his flesh, will you?” Antonio’s friends asked Shylock. “What use is that? What can you do with it?”
“I can use it to go fishing,” he replied. “I can’t eat it, but it will make me feel good. He has often laughed at me when I lose money. He even laughs at me when I don’t lose money. He lends money to people for no interest and so he takes away my friends and my business. Why does he do this? It is only because I am a Jew. But a Jew is just another person. Don’t I have eyes and hands like he does? Don’t I have feelings and passions (激情) like he does? Don’t I eat the same food? Don’t the same weapon (武器) hurt me as hurt him? Shylock held his knife and told Antonio to get ready. “Wait!” shouted Portia. “You will not do anything that is not written in the contract. Is that right, Shylock?”
“Yes, that’s right,” said Shylock. He wondered what the wise young judge (法官) was going to say. “Well,” said the young judge, “I have read the contract carefully, and it does not say anything about taking his blood (血). It says ‘a pound of flesh’. You can take your pound of flesh, but you may not take one drop of his blood. If you take any of his blood, the duke (公爵) will take everything you own!”

根据“If Antonio couldn’t return the money, Shylock could get Antonio’s one pound of flesh (肉).”
根据前文“Bassanio, Antonio’s friend, was happy to pay. He was very pleased that his friend Antonio would not die.” Portia said again. ‘Shy lock cannot get the money. It is not written in the contract.’” 所以横线处应填“But Portia stopped Shylock from taking the money.”。故选B。
根据文章内容,首先是“Antonio, a merchant (商人), borrowed money from Shylock”即安东尼奥向夏洛克借钱但还不上(c);接着“Shylock held his knife and told Antonio to get ready.”即夏洛克拿着刀准备取安东尼奥的肉(a);然后“Portia said, ‘You will not do anything not written in the contract. …You can take your pound of flesh, but you may not take one drop of his blood.’”即波西亚警告夏洛克不能流安东尼奥一滴血(d);最后“Shylock didn’t want to lose everything, so he decided not to take the flesh. Instead, he asked for money”即夏洛克决定要钱而不是肉(b)。
根据文章最后“The law of Venice says if you plan to kill a citizen, you’ll lose everything. Half of your wealth goes to the person you tried to kill, and half to the Duke.”

146.B 147.C 148.A 149.D
根据第二段中的“They came back with news about his money she had spent and his jewels (珠宝) she had sold. All this made Shylock angrier and angrier.”

He paid people to look for her, but they could not find her.”以及第三段中的“However, when he heard that Antonio had lost a ship and all its valuable cargo, he was pleased. He decided that if Antonio could not pay back his debt (债务) when it was due (到期), he would make him pay the penalty. He would take one pound of his flesh (肉).”可知,先是Antonio向Shylock借钱,然后是Shylock花钱雇人去找他的女儿,所以②排第一,④第二;根据第四段中的“He lost another ship in a storm near Tripoli. It was a very large ship and its cargo was very valuable.” 根据第五段“‘You will not take a pound of his flesh, will you?’ Antonio’s friends asked Shylock. ‘What use is that? What can you do with it?’” 故选A。
