When I was a kid,if someone told me that I would grow up to become a published
author and founder of a youth literacy(读写能力)foundation,I would have laughed
and kept walking.Even now when I see the title of my latest picture book,My Very
Favorite Book in the Whole Wide World,I shake my head, not quite believing that book
has my name on it.But the truth is,this story comes from my own personal experience.
It took me a very long time to find my personal reading voice. In Valdosta,Ga.,
where I grew up,my community promoted two pathways to a better life for little boys
like me:being an athlete and being an entertainer.I was no different than the other kids,
so I did what felt natural:Play football and overlook school.School presented
challenges every day and so did football practice, but overcoming physical adversity
was on trend with my neighborhood's culture.Reading books not so much.
Fortunately,I went to college. That's where my reading struggles really reared
their ugly head.Trips to the grocery store were stressful because there was so much
reading involved in the simple act of buying food.I would misread labels and grab the
wrong items.Once,I picked up apple sauce thinking it was apple slices.I didn't notice
my mistake until I got home and realized that it was my inability to understand the
differences in the wording on the labels that caused the mistake.I realized that if I
wanted to be a better version of me,I had to become a stronger reader.
I joined a book club and read every free moment I had.My journey with reading
also created a desire in me to inspire others who struggle with reading. So,I started a
nonprofit,Share the Magic Foundation, trying to transform the lives of children living
in disadvantaged communities through literacy.
24.What does the author think of his latest book?
A.It's beyond his expectation.
B.It's helpful for youth literacy.
C.It's full of humor and wisdom.
D.It's an exact record of his early life.
25.What was the root reason for the author's failure to find his reading voice?
A.The influence of his community.
B.His dream to be an entertainer.
C.The challenges he met in study.
D.His preference for football.
26.What does the underlined phrase "reared their ugly head"in Paragraph 3 mean?
A.Changed.
B.Concluded.
C.Surfaced.
D.Disappeared.
27.Which of the following best describes the author?
A.Reflective and warm-hearted.
B.Brave and strong-minded.
C.Creative and humorous.
D.dreamer-like and careful.

At a conference last week,I received an interesting piece of advice:"Assume we
are wrong."When Nosek recommended that I and other scientists assume (that
we were wrong,he was sharing a strategy that he's employed in his own lab--a strategy
for changing the way we respond to criticism ()
Assuming that we are wrong is not so foreign to science. Many of our past
scientific theories have been wrong,so surely many of our current theories will turn
out to be wrong, too. That doesn't mean we haven't made progress, but it does suggest
高一英语期中考试第4页,共10页
that there is always room for improvement.
One worry about this approach is that it could discourage scientists, because
trying to be less wrong might be a less effective encouragement than the promise of
being right.Another concern is that a strategy that works well with scientists might not
work when it comes to communicating science with the public.
Despite these worries,I still like Nosek's suggestion because it builds in
humility()(There are things I do not know!")along with a sense that we can do
better(There are things I do not know yet!").It also builds in a sense of
community-we're all in the same boat when it comes to falling short of getting things
right.Perhaps the focus on a shared goal-our goal as scientists and humans of being less
wrong-can help make up for the harms in scientific motivation or communication.
I also like Nosek's advice because it isn't limited to science.Trying to be less
wrong rather than more right-could be a beneficial way to communicate our aims across
a variety of contexts,whether it's a daily argument or a business decision.I may be
wrong about who did the dishes last night,or about what is the best investment;if I
begin from the assumption that I can be wrong and I'm trying to be less wrong, any
challenge may not appear so threatening.
28.What did Nosek most likely want to tell the participants at the conference?
A.Facing criticism is a very important part of life.
B.Taking a step back is a good way to face criticism.
C Confidence is necessary for daily communication.
D.Assuming that we are wrong is foreign to scientists.
29.What does the third paragraph focus on?
A.The popularity of Nosek's idea.
B.The concerns about Nosek's strategy,
C.Our natural response to criticism.
D.The problems with scientific theorie
30.What is the author's attitude to Nosek's advice?
A.Supportive.
B.Reserved.
C.Doubtful.
D.Uninterested.
31.Where is the text most probably taken from?
A.A diary entry.
B A biography.
C.A news report.
D.A lab's instruction.

Chinese scientists have created a breakthrough fibre that can be woven into warm,
lightweight clothing using aerogel(气擬胶),a thermal insulation(热绝缘)material
mainly used in the aerospace industry.
Aerogel, notable for their performance and durability, could have various
applications. As the world's lightest solid material,it has long been valued for its
thermal insulation properties ()Traditional aerogel, made by replacing the liquid
in aerogel with air,is extraordinarily light, like a solid cloud of smoke. Its high porosity
(gives it exceptional ability to stop heat conduction, but this also makes it
fragile and challenging to process, limiting its use in civilian applications.
But now, researchers at Zhejiang University have overcome aerogel's fragility and
designed an encapsulated aerogel fibre (EAF)with similar thermal insulation

mechanisms-after being inspired by the structure of polar bear hair
The China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation as well as NASA have
used EAF in Mars rovers(太空火星车),which endure extreme temperatures ranging
from thousands of degrees during the Martian landing to-130degrees Celsius(-202
degrees Fahrenheit)on the planet's surface.
In an experiment,a volunteer wore textiles()made of EAF,down, wool, and
cotton in a-20degree Celsius environment. The surface temperatures of these materials
were 3.5 degrees,3.8 degrees,7.2 degrees,and 10.8 degrees respectively,indicating the
superior insulation of EAFThey showed the practicality of EAF by weaving a jumper
and comparing its thermal insulation to common textile materials.
As well as being strong and stretchable,EAF can also be washed and dyed,
improving its use in practical applications.Traditional silica aerogel will absorb water
and collapse on itself. As a result,it quickly loses its thermal insulation qualities in wet
or humid environments. However,EAF maintains its performance even after machine
washing.
Professor Zhang Xuetong of the Suzhou Institute of Nano-tech and Nano-bionics at
the Chinese Academy of Sciences, highlighted the potential of the aerogel fibres in
advanced thermal textiles. As well as its potential for civilian use,EAF fibre also holds
promise for industries that are already familiar with aerogels."EAF textiles feature
excellent thermal insulation and multifunction and have great potential in areas such as
military uniforms and spacesuits in extremely cold environments,"professor Zhang
noted in a paper. However,he also noted the gap between existing technology and
capacity for mass production.Challenges are how to develop fast textile technology
continuously that is necessary for mass production.
32.What is the characteristic of traditional aerogel?
A.It can be easily processed.
B.It works well in high temperatures.
C.It is a solid cloud of smoke.
D.It allows electricity to pass.
33.What is EAF's advantage in enduring extreme temperature based on?
A.Scientific Research.
B.Public comments.
C.Scientific prediction(预测).
D.Business report.
34.Professor Zhang Xuetong's study found that mass production could be possible
if
A.advancement is made in thermal textiles
B.there is need for continuous production.
C.problems in fast textile technology are overcome
D.aerogel's strengths and weaknesses get balanced
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.The development of aerogel fibre,
B.Great breakthrough in aerospace industry.
C.The possible use of aerogel fibre in future.
D.China's newly-invented aerogel clothing.
