Dear classmates,
Good morning! It’s my honor to share ideas on smooth cross-cultural communication,
with body language being a key part that often influences our interactions.
Body language, which conveys emotions without words, carries totally different
meanings in various cultures. For instance, nodding, regarded as a sign of agreement in
most Asian countries, actually means "disagreement" in Bulgaria. Another example is
the smile: while it shows friendliness in Western cultures, it might be seen as a
way to hide embarrassment in Japan.
To use body language appropriately, we should first learn about cultural differences
by reading related materials. Second, observe locals’ gestures carefully before taking
action, as following their habits helps avoid misunderstandings. Last, keep gestures
simple when unsure, which can reduce the risk of offending others.
That’s all. Thank you!

第一节
(Text 1)
M: Have you thought about where to open your new restaurant, Helen?
W: I wanted to open it in the center of the city, but I couldn’t afford the high rents there.
M: And the heavy competition would be a problem. What about a location out of town? Lower rents, more parking.
(Text 2)
M: I heard you were leaving. Is that true?
W: You’re the second person to ask me. I’m just moving from admissions office to the finance office.
M: Oh, good. So it is a promotion for you.
(Text 3)
W: You still haven’t bought a dining table, Jim? Need some money?
M: No, thanks. It’s just that I can’t decide on the right kind of dining table. I might get one like my old one.
(Text 4)
W: Where can I get a bus to the museum?
M: From bus stop No. 3. Buses run every 30 minutes. The next one leaves at 5:30.
W: Oh, there’s a big queue, so I’ll have to wait for the one after that.
(Text 5)
W: I’m sorry, Bob, but I can’t make it to your anniversary party on Saturday.
M: Are you off on a business trip?
W: Yes, I’m flying out to Amsterdam tomorrow morning.
M: Oh, that’s a big project we’ve been working on. Good luck!
第二节
(Text 6)
W: Good morning. You’ve reached USU Registrar’s office.
M: Good morning. I’m calling about registering to study at your university. I’m currently studying Education at another school, but I’ve been giving it a lot of thought, and I think I’m more interested in Accounting at your university.
W: Okay. You can register after you receive a registration pack. It contains all the necessary information and forms you’ll need to fill in.
M: How can I get one of those?
W: Well, these are usually available from September.
M: I see.
(Text 7)
W: I really enjoyed that despite the technical problems at the beginning.
M: Wonderful Spanish flamenco music just made you want to get up and dance.
W: I noticed you standing up at one stage.
M: Yeah, but that was to get a better view.
W: Yes, pity we were at the back, but it was all that was available when I bought the tickets on Friday.
M: I know, but next time we must book earlier.
W: It was very hot in there.
M: Did that bother you? I just kept thinking it was like summer in Spain. I loved all the singing and the musicians performed with great passion.
W: Me too.
(Text 8)
W: I really want to take driving lessons, but I haven’t been able to find a driving school that will give lessons during the weekends so that I don’t have to miss any classes at college.
M: The driving school that I used was brilliant and really flexible with their teaching hours. It’s really close to the school.
W: Oh, that’s perfect. Did your teacher make you drive in urban areas, or did he mainly teach you on roads in the countryside?
M: My teacher said that I had to learn both in order to become a good and experienced driver.
W: He sounds like a good teacher. Would you mind giving me his contact details so I can ask him for lessons?
M: Of course. My mother’s friend, Daniel Smith, referred me to him. His name is Alan Suckliff.
W: Thanks for helping me out.
(Text 9)
W: Hello, Flanders Conference Hotel. How can I help you?
M: Well, I’m calling from Barrett and Stansons, a medical company based in Perth.
W: Oh, yes.
M: And we’re organizing a conference for our clients to be held in Sydney. And we’re expecting about fifty or sixty people.
W: When are you thinking of having it?
M: Sometime early next year, like the end of January? It’d have to be a weekend.
W: Let me see … our conference facilities are already booked for the weekend beginning January 28th by a company from New York. We could do the first weekend in February?
M: How about January 21st?
W: I’m afraid that’s booked too.
M: Well, let’s go for the February date then. Now, can you tell me a bit about your conference facilities?
W: Sure. So for talks and presentations, we have the Tesla room. It holds up to a hundred people and is equipped with a projector and microphones.
M: Great. And I assume there’s Wi-Fi?
W: Oh yes, that’s free and available throughout the hotel.
M: OK.
(Text 10)
W: Good morning and welcome. We’re really pleased that you’re going to be joining us next week for your work placement. In this short talk today, I’ll be giving you more general information which will be relevant to you all.
When you start next Monday, the first thing you’ll need to do is sign in. Come through the main entrance, and you’ll see the statue of the horse and just behind that is a door. Go through that and that’s the sign-in office.
Now, on the first day you’ll be working in Gallery 1. You find this as follows, in the central courtyard area, close to the entrance, there’s a large box where visitors put donations for the museum. The door just behind that leads to Gallery 1. The workshop you’ll be taking part in starts at eleven o’clock.
I haven’t mentioned breaks, lunch, etc. Unfortunately, our cafe’s closed at the moment, so your best bet is to bring a packed lunch. We tend to have our sandwiches in the kitchen area. Go round the reception desk and you’ll see the door to the kitchen area is just behind that.
Now, does anyone have any questions?

21-23 BCB
Acadia National Park的介绍中提到:“Almost completely surrounded by the sea... A variety of land and sea life, both plants and animals are well protected...”
Ort-Cros National Park的介绍中提到:“...the first national park in Europe that unites land and marine protection zones.”
根据第二段“It was there that he came across a science textbook entitled Using Energy. He learned that he could generate electricity using wind. The youngster realized that, if mastered, this power could help his village in exceptional ways.(在那里,他看到了一本名为《使用能源》的科学教科书。他了解到他可以利用风发电。这个年轻人意识到,如果掌握了这种力量,他可以以不同寻常的方式帮助他的村庄)”可知,科学教科书《使用能源》激励威廉把电带到他的村庄。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据第三段“He defended himself from all doubt and criticism.(他为自己辩护,不受任何怀疑和批评)”可知,起初并不是所有人都支持威廉的梦想。故选A。
根据划线词上文“What seemed like a hopeless situation has been turned into an inspirational story that motivates each and every one of us, persuading us that no misfortune”以及后文“He sought solutions for his problems and continued fighting even when the going got tough.(他为自己的问题寻求解决方案,即使情况变得艰难,他也会继续战斗)”可知,一个看似绝望的情况已经变成了一个鼓舞人心的故事,说明没有什么不幸是一成不变的,故划线词意思是“不变的”。故选C。
根据最后一段“What seemed like a hopeless situation has been turned into an inspirational story that motivates each and every one of us, persuading us that no misfortune is set in stone. William refused to be a school drop-out forever. He sought solutions for his problems and continued fighting even when the going got
tough. He was able to rise above poverty to become a graduate from one of America’s best universities, Dartmouth College.(一个看似绝望的情况已经变成了一个鼓舞人心的故事,激励着我们每一个人,让我们相信没有什么不幸是一成不变的。
根据第一段中的“Imagine you’re writing a poem, rhymes must be paired up before you start a new line. It turns out that AI does something similar! When Claude, a large language model (LLM), is given the first line “he saw a carrot and had to grab it”, it begins thinking about words like “rabbit” almost immediately, writing the next sentence to end at the appropriate rhyme.(想象一下你正在写诗,在开始新的一行之前,必须先搭配好押韵词。事实证明,人工智能也会做类似的事情!当大型语言模型(LLM)克劳德(Claude)得到第一行文字“he saw a carrot and had to grab it”(他看到一根胡萝卜,不得不抓住它)时,它几乎立刻就开始思考像“rabbit”(兔子)这样的词,并写出下一个句子,使其结尾有合适的押韵词。)”可知,作者以AI写诗提前思考押韵词为例,是为了说明AI能提前规划句子。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“The tool, a “digital microscope”, lets scientists look at which parts of the AI’s neural (神经的) network light up when it’s working on different tasks. If a particular area of the LLM lights up whenever it produces words like rabbit, then that gets marked as being related to rabbits.(这个被称为“数字显微镜”的工具,能让科学家观察到人工智能在处理不同任务时,其神经网络的哪些部分会被激活。如果大型语言模型(LLM)的某个特定区域在生成“rabbit”(兔子)这类词时总会被激活,那么该区域就会被标记为与“兔子”相关。)”可知,“数字显微镜”通过追踪AI的思维活动(神经网络激活情况)发挥作用。故选A项。
根据第五段中的“When Claude itself is asked to reason, printing out its chain of thought to answer maths questions, the microscope suggests that the way the model says it reached a conclusion, and what it actually thought, might not always be the same. Worse still, ask a leading question — suggesting that the answer “might be 4”, and it will specifically add numbers that ultimately lead it to agree with the question, even if the suggestion is wrong.(当要求克劳德(Claude)进行推理,输出其思考过程来解答数学问题时,“数字显微镜”显示,该模型声称得出结论的方式与其实际思考过程可能并不总是一致的。更糟糕的是,若提出一个诱导性问题——暗示答案“可能是4”,即便这个暗示是错误的,它也会特意添加数字,最终得出与该问题暗示一致的结论。)”可知,Claude可能会编造思考过程或结果来迎合错误暗示,即“可能会编造内容”。故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第三段中的“The tool, a “digital microscope”, lets scientists look at which parts of the AI’s neural (神经的) network light up when it’s working on different tasks.(这个被称为“数字显微镜”的工具,能让科学家观察到人工智能在处理不同任务时,其神经网络的哪些部分会被激活。)”以及最后一段中的“But being able to gain insight into the mind of an LLM provides clues as to how to stop it doing the same in the future.(但能够深入了解大型语言模型(LLM)的“思维”,为未来找到阻止它出现类似问题的方法提供了线索。)”
根据第二段中“The researchers assumed that our ancestors first evolved (进化) hand flexibility, which then promoted the development of a larger brain.(研究人员认为,我们的祖先首先进化出了手的灵活性,然后促进了更大的大脑的发展。)”
根据第三段中“Later, they tested the idea that the evolution of longer thumbs is associated with tool use, but they didn’t find any correlation.(后来,他们测试了拇指变长与工具使用有关的观点,但他们没有发现任何相关性。)”以及“This suggests that longer thumbs are “linked to thinking, not movement.”(这表明长拇指“与思考有关,而与运动无关”。)”
根据最后一段“Fotos Alexandros Karakostis, a biological anthropologist who was not involved in the study, comments that the research indicates that adaptations to the brain and hand likely evolved together. However, he notes that the brain size and thumb length cannot take only credit for the brain evolution or high level of hand coordination.(没有参与这项研究的生物人类学家Fotos Alexandros Karakostis评论说,这项研究表明,对大脑和手的适应可能是一起进化的。

C选项“These active responses help reduce feelings of helplessness.
40.根据下文“Follow social media accounts or newsletters dedicated to sharing acts of kindness, scientific breakthroughs, or community achievements. Remind yourself that while challenges exist, countless good deeds and progress occur daily. (关注致力于分享善举、科学突破或社区成就的社交媒体账号或通讯。提醒自己,尽管挑战存在,但每天都有无数善举和进步在发生。)”可知,本段围绕“通过积极新闻平衡负面新闻”展开,此空应作为段落开头,点明主题。D选项“Turning to positive news sources helps balance negative news. (关注积极新闻来源有助于平衡负面新闻。)”直接概括主题,与下文“分享善举、科学突破”的积极新闻内容一致,符合语境。故选D项。

18 years ago,a 14-year-old boy from Kasungu district in Malawi was forced to

village, claiming people's lives and leaving desperation in its wake.
This was a situation to break the strongest of minds but William Kamkwamba did
not give up.Young as he was,he knew that education was where his future lay.He
found hope in the library and feasted on the knowledge that he harvested from its books.
It was there that he came across a science textbook entitled Using Energy. He learned
that he could generate electricity using wind. The youngster realized that,if mastered,
this power could help his village in exceptional ways.

Imagine you're writing a poem,rhymes()must be paired up before you start a
new line.It turns out that AI does something similar! When Claude,a large language
model (LLM),is given the first line "he saw a carrot and had to grab it",it begins
thinking about words like rabbit"almost immediately, writing the next sentence to end
at the appropriate rhyme.
Such forethought is unexpected.Scientists at Anthropic, the lab that developed
Claude, built a tool and they discovered some unexpected complexity.
The tool,a "digital microscope",lets scientists look at which parts of the AI's
neural network light up when it's working on different tasks. If a particular
area of the LLM lights up whenever it produces words like rabbit, then that gets marked
as being related to rabbits.
This has let the team solve some open questions in AI research, for example,
whether a multilingual(多语言的)chatbot has awareness of concepts beyond language.
When Claude is asked for the opposite of big"in English,or the same concept in
Chinese, the same feature lights up in every case, before more language-specific circuits
kick in to"translate"the concept of smallness into a particular word. This suggests that
AI might have a deeper understanding of the world than we thought.
Other insights, though, are less encouraging. When Claude itself is asked to reason,
printing out its chain of thought to answer maths questions, the microscope suggests
that the way the model says it reached a conclusion, and what it actually thought, might
not always be the same.Worse still, ask a leading question-suggesting that the
answer"might be 4",and it will specifically add numbers that ultimately lead it to agree
with the question, even if the suggestion is wrong.
But being able to gain insight into the mind of an LLM provides clues as to how to
stop it doing the same in the future. The goal, after all,is not to have to do brain surgery,
but to know what it's thinking.
28.What does the writer intend to show through the example in paragraph 1?
A.AI can write texts as programmed.
B.AI can plan sentences in advance.
C.AI can deal with complex tasks.
D.AI can simplify rhyming lines.
29.How does "digital microscope"function in the research?
A.By tracking AI's thinking activities.
B.By working on different jobs
C.By activating AI's "brain"potential
D.By matching language patterns.
30.What can be inferred from paragraph 5 about Claude?
A.It may make things up.
B.It may skip chains of thought.
C.It may leave clues out.
D.It may give logical reasoning
31.Which of the following titles best suits this text?
A.Why AI Still Gets It Wrong
B.Chatbots'Language Magic
C.Looking Inside AI's Mind
D.The Rise of AI Chatbots

As human species, our big brains and flexible hands have always made us feel
special. However,in a study published in the journal Communications Biology,
researchers investigated nearly 100 primate(species including monkeys,apes
and humans and revealed that the creatures with longer thumbs usually had larger
brains.
The researchers assumed that our ancestors first evolved hand flexibility, which
then promoted the development of a larger brain. For instance,as primates'control of
objects improved, their brains would have had to become bigger to use these abilities,
Joanna Baker, lead author of the study said."Ultimately, though, the two needed to go
hand in hand,"she adds.
While Baker and her colleagues predicted that longer thumbs would be tied to
growth of the cerebellum-the part of the brain that influences movement and
coordination ()the team was surprised to find that they are actually associated
with the neocortex,a large region involved in cognition and sensory information. This
suggests that longer thumbs are "linked to thinking, not movement.Later, they tested
the idea that the evolution of longer thumbs is associated with tool use,and as expected,
they didn't find any relationship.
Ultimately,"we've always known that our big brains and sharp fingers set us apart,
but now we can see they didn't evolve separately,"Baker says. The study suggests our
species is not quite as unique as we once thought, and it also represents the first direct
evidence that brain evolution and hand flexibility are associated throughout the primate
family tree.
Fotios Alexandros Karakostis,a biological anthropologist who was not involved in
the study, comments that the research indicates that adaptations to the brain and hand
likely evolved at the same time. However,he notes that the brain size and thumb length
cannot take only credit for the brain evolution or high level of hand coordination
32.What was the assumption of the researchers according to paragraph 2?
A.Brain evolution determined hand size.
B.Bigger brains made humans intelligent.
C.Object control was easy for ancestors.
D.Hand flexibility drove brain development.
33.Why does the author mention "tool use"in paragraph 3?
A.To make a prediction.
B.To clarify a concept.
C.To present a different view.
D.To offer supporting evidence.
34.What is Karakostis'attitude towards the research?
A.Favourable.B.Objective.
C.Doubtful.
D.Indifferent.
35.What can we learn from the text?
A.The bigger the brain, the longer the thumb
B.Big brains and sharp fingers set humans apart.
C.Primate brains and thumbs evolve together.
D.Evolution mainly depends on brains and hands

essential for a healthy relationship with news.

excessive information, particularly negative reports.37.These may include
increased anxiety, emotional numbness (over time, and difficulty concentrating

after waking up or before sleeping,as these moments are critical for mental relaxation.
Choose reliable news outlets that offer balanced reporting rather than sensational
headlines designed to cause panic.38.And skip stories that merely add
unnecessary stress.
When a story upsets you, look for ways to contribute, such as volunteering,
donating,or spreading awareness.39.Additionally,you can extend your
contribution, such as inviting others to join you or tracking small impacts,to handle the
bad feelings.
40
Follow social media accounts or newsletters dedicated to sharing
acts of kindness,scientific breakthroughs,or community achievements.Remind
yourself that while challenges exist, countless good deeds and progress occur daily.
