At US immigration check, my voice shook when I said, “My name is Yeosol Lee.” The long line that never ended and the damp air were nothing like what I thought my first time in the US would be. I tried hard to get my passport out to show my student visa. Meanwhile, the officer asked me many questions about who I am, my family, and my finance. This was the first time I had talked to someone in English with difficulty, and it made me too frightened to talk to anyone else after that.
After I got to Georgia, I joined Kennesaw State University’s Intensive English Program (IEP). I was withdrawn and didn’t believe in my speaking or writing skills. On the first day of the program, I took a test: reading, listening, and grammar went well, but the writing question — “Talk about an experience that helped you grow and what you learned from it” — stopped me. I couldn’t continue after a few words, feeling lost like someone in thick fog. The classroom was filled with the sound of pencils writing, but I just sat there stuck.
However, Ms. Cain smiled and told me she’d help. She gave me a book called On Writing Well by William Zinsser. One sentence from it — “Writing is about showing your thoughts…Use that energy to keep going” — made me want to try harder. She taught me to draw mind maps for essay topics, pick ideas I cared about for starters, and make essays with clear parts.
Before I met Ms. Cain, it took me more than two days to finish a two-page essay. With her help, I started to believe in myself. I could think of ideas easily and write with joy. I saw writing as a way to talk to myself and learn more about who I am. Those two months with her changed me a lot. I used to be scared of English, but now I’m into writing.
4. Why was Yeosol scared at US immigration check?
A. She missed the student visa. B. She faced language barriers.
C. She was treated with prejudice. D. She was asked unusual questions.
5. What can we know about Yeosol’s first IEP test?
A. She gave up the test halfway. B. She wrote nothing in the end.
C. She copied her deskmate’s plot. D. She messed up the writing part.
6. How did Ms. Cain help Yeosol with writing?
A. By inspiring her to read more. B. By advising her to write daily.
C. By teaching her useful skills. D. By assigning reciting practices.
7. What does Yeosol’s story show?
A. Every cloud has a silver lining. B. Time and tide wait for no man.
C. Still waters run deep. D. Teaching is learning.
C
Emotional intelligence, or EQ, refers to a person’s ability to understand and manage emotions in order to build relationships, solve conflicts, manage stress, and other activities. Applied artificial intelligence machine learning experts are working hard to integrate EQ into areas like conversational AI chatbots, virtual assistants, and more for customer service, sales, and other functions.
Conversational AI is rapidly moving beyond simple text-based recognition using natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning to more multimodal (多模态的) models. Multimodal emotion analysis is a method of identifying someone’s psychological (心理学的) state using AI systems based on factors such as facial expression, tone, and speech. It enriches text-based analysis by integrating other forms such as data from images and sound to provide richer insights into the user’s emotional state. On the frontier of multimodal emotion analysis is integrating physiological data. In life sciences, anything that belongs to the body and its systems can be considered physiological.
In a new study, Japanese researchers sought to understand the effects of physiological signals in multimodal sentiment analysis. The researchers analyzed data from over 2,400 exchanges with 26 participants interacting with conversational AI. The researchers used a dataset that contained data from facial expression, body language detection with skin potential, voice color sensors, and speech recognition. They discovered that the biological information was more effective than voice and facial recognition. “Our results suggest that physiological features are effective in the unimodal model and that the combination of linguistic (语言的) representations with physiological features provides the best results for estimating self-emotion labels as marked by the users themselves,” the researchers wrote.
This study is a breakthrough, which suggests focusing on human physiological signals may be the key to creating artificial intelligence machine learning systems with high emotional intelligence. According to the scientists, AI can help monitor mental health by detecting changes in emotional states in the future.
8. What can be inferred from conversational AI?
A. It aims to provide emotional services.
B. It abandons text-based recognition.
C. It relies on face-to-face chats.
D. It perceives inner mental state.
9. What did the Japanese researchers find?
A. Single-type data misled judgements. B. Linguistic features served as a basis.
C. Data integration performed very well. D. Facial recognition put privacy at risk.
10. Why is the Japanese study pioneering according to the text?
A. It helps AI be human-like with EQ. B. It makes AI think logically.
C. It reveals EQ’s new functions. D. It designs multimodal models.
11. What is the suitable title for the text?
A. Can AI Spot Physiological Signals? B. Can AI Be Emotionally Intelligent?
C. Can AI Find Emotion Changes? D. Can AI Be Physiologically Stable?
D
Ever find yourself surrounded by people who like to speak in buzzwords (热词)? Feel lost among a sea of vocabulary that seems to flood over your ears? Or maybe you’re wondering how to keep up with all the coined-overnight-terms that seem to crop up on a regular basis? Well, you’re not alone. Earlier this month, I reached out to the start-up and founder ecosystem to find out what their least-favourite buzzwords were, and why they disliked them.
The problem with buzzwords, you see, is that they take a little bit of extra figuring out from time to time. The other problem is that they don’t always match everyone’s expectations or definitions. They can often be loaded with subjectivity and mystery. The other problem is that they can often be time-consuming to understand, something that can get in the way of smooth conversations when it might seem like they’re speeding things up.
Javier Santoyo, director of Nulla Carbon, a company that is attempting to mobilize the world’s economy towards carbon net-negative emissions, says that his least-favourite buzzword has to be “climatech”. “Basically, because sustainability, ESG, climate action, circular economy, purpose, etc. are popular buzzwords, many start-ups are ‘rebranding’ their services to sound like they are green digital businesses,” he said. “For example, because the cloud can contribute to a more efficient use of resources, including power, many start-ups that provide cloud and digitalisation services ... now they say they are a ‘climatech’ solution. Because it is more attractive and can open the door to access green investment.”
Founders and the tech community don’t like to be boiled down to worn-out phrases. As some of the most innovative thinkers, it sort of takes away from the work they do by describing them and their work in such uninspired ways. There are other buzzwords too that are just overly complicated or composed of too many words. Other words seem almost too fast and loose, too up-in-the-air.
12. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By defining a term. B. By quoting a study.
C. By picturing situations. D. By providing statistics.
13. Why is it hard to comprehend buzzwords?
A. They lack uniform meanings. B. They are too simple in forms.
C. They speed up conversations. D. They are used in rare settings.
14 What does Javier think of “climatech”?
A. It reduces resource efficiency. B. It threatens digital businesses.
C. It results in breaking economic law. D. It tends to attract green investment.
15. What is one negative aspect of buzzwords?
A. Being less logical. B. Being too lengthy.
C. Being less interesting. D. Being too emotional.

Soilless farming, as the name implies, is a type of farming where plants are cultured and grown without the use of the soil. It is also a systematic technique where plants are grown without the use of soil as a rooting environment. ____16____
Due to lacking originality, conventional farming has many processes and requires the manure (肥料) of chemical mixtures to make the soil rich in nutrients. ____17____ Nutrients are provided to the plants, majorly in liquid form, and their needs are met throughout life, from seeds to ripe fruit.
In many soilless farming systems, water is recycled and reused until the plants are ready to harvest. ____18____ Additionally, it reduces the physical labor and energy required from workers, helping them achieve higher profits while keeping costs very low.
By following standardized steps throughout the entire production process, soilless farming can supply crops to the market every day, meeting consumers’ needs. When countries that rely on food imports see how productive this farming method is, they will begin growing crops locally all year round. ____19____
____20____ The rate at which pathogens (病原体) attack the farm will be zero as a result of how the planting environment is concerned, and if the pathogen ever attacks, the infected plant will be easily separated to avoid infecting the farm as a whole. Developed countries in the world are expected to adopt this mode of farming because doing so reduces the level of food importation and increases the availability of food in the country.
A. However, soil farming requires more workload.
B. The quality of the harvested food may be controlled.
C. After all, food imports might pollute the environment.
D. Hence, soilless farming is an alternative to dry regions.
E. With this method, crops can be planted almost everywhere.
F. Soilless farming has less workload and can enhance growth.
G. In this way, even seasonal produce can be harvested anytime.

第二节 (满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Kay was a 16-year-old high school student. Every morning, he rode his old bicycle to school. His family was financially disadvantaged—his parents worked as cleaners and barely made enough money to pay the bills. So Kay always tried to be careful with his things, afraid of causing any extra trouble.
One Tuesday morning, the sky was gray and it looked like it would rain. Kay hurried on his bicycle, worried about being late for class. As he turned a corner near the community park, a big bus suddenly appeared from the opposite direction. It was coming so fast that Kay didn’t have time to think. To avoid crashing into the bus, he quickly turned his bicycle to the right. But before he could stop, his bike hit a small black car parked by the roadside with a loud “bang”.
Kay fell off his bike and scraped (擦伤) his knee. He stood up in a panic and checked the car. Oh, no! The car’s left headlight was completely broken, and there was a long scratch (刮痕) on the door. Kay’s heart started beating fast. He looked around—there was no one on the street, and he didn’t see any security cameras nearby. “I could just leave,” he thought. “No one will know it was me.”
But then he thought about the car’s owner. The owner must have spent a lot of money on this car. If he left the owner would have to pay for the repair all by himself. Kay looked into his schoolbag. He found a piece of sticky note and a pen. He wrote: “Dear car owner, I’m Kay, a student. I hit your car by accident this morning. I’m sorry. Please call 555–7890 so we can talk about the repair.” He stuck the note on the car’s windshield (风挡) and then rode to school, feeling a little nervous but also calm.

We learn how to take care of plants from seeds to harvest and understand what hard work and patience mean through hands-on practice. This course not only enriches our school life but also teaches us to value food and teamwork. All of us are interested in it.
I hope you’ll enjoy knowing about it and maybe join us someday!

At night, Tina, the car owner, returned to her car and noticed the broken headlight first. She was shocked and annoyed when she saw the damage. “What on earth happened?” she murmured to herself. Then her eyes caught the sticky note on the windshield. She read it carefully, learning about Kay’s accident in detail. She took out her phone and dialed the number Kay had left without hesitation.
Contrary to what Kay might assume, Tina didn’t get angry at all. When Kay answered the phone, she said gently, “Hello, Kay. I’m Tina, the car owner. I saw your note. Accidents happen, and I really appreciate your honesty. Don’t worry about the money for the repair. I can manage it easily. You just focus on your studies.” Kay was extremely relieved and deeply grateful. He thanked Tina repeatedly. From that day on, Kay learned that honesty was always the best choice, and it could even bring unexpected kindness and understanding.
