D. To encourage people to take a walk. B We’ve all been there-accidentally distanced a new co-worker with a bad joke, or failed to impress the new boss with our first task. You might have been off your game because of a recent failure, but your new co-workers are likely to think that your poor performance is one of your basic features. However, it’s not impossible to change how others view you. Your co-workers may have built up a certain impression of you — that you’re not leadership material because you’re too quiet, for example. You can’t expect to turn over that thinking with small actions. You need to do something unexpected. If you’ve made them think you’re quiet and never speak up, it won’t be enough to talk once in a meeting. Instead, make a point of being the first person to speak. If your co-workers have to ask themselves, “What got into him?” then you’re on the way to changing their views. My first impression of Matthew, an employee of mine, was that he was a bit lazy at work. Realizing that I was increasingly unimpressed with him, he made a move. He suggested that we get to know each other better by going to a rock-climbing gym — an activity at which he was very experienced, and I was a beginner. I depended on Matthew’s skills as his climbing partner, and his great skills showed me a different side to his abilities. Sometimes the bad impression your co-workers may have formed has nothing to do with you. About ten years ago, I met a woman at a meeting. Today, we’re close friends. But, she said that she hadn’t liked me at first. She thought I seemed “too positive”. It was only after knowing me for several years that she realized that was in fact how I was. It’s unfair when we feel misunderstood. But while first impressions are likely to stick they can — with time and effort — be changed, so that your true talents can be appreciated. 41. What does the underlined phrase “off your game” in the first paragraph probably mean? A. Beaten in a sport. B. Lost in your computer game. C. Unable to work as well as usual. D. Unwilling to accept a new friend. 42. How can we change others’ impressions of us according to Para. 2? A. By questioning them. B. By organizing meetings. C. By keeping quiet. D. By surprising them. 43. Why did Matthew ask the author to go rock climbing with him? A. To push the author to exercise more. B. To get the author to know him better. C. To explore new job chances. D. To show off his climbing skills. 44. What did the woman think of the author at first according to Para. 4? A. Brave. B. Friendly. C. Insincere. D. Impatient. 45. What would be the best title for the text? A. The power of first impressions B. First impressions always lie C. Why first impressions are important D. First impressions can be changed C Children in the developed world have a lot of choices when it comes to scientific toys. In the developing world, however, scientific toys are relatively scarce. So, what’s an adult to do if they want to get local children interested in science? Well, in the case of Arvind Gupta, they show the kids how to make scientific toys from rubbish. When Gupta graduated from the Indian Institute of Technology, he went on to work at Tata Motors, where he helped to build trucks. After five years of doing so, however, he decided that it wasn’t the career for him. In 2018, he took a one-year leave from his job, and took part in the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Program. “The objective was to make science fun and exciting for village children using simple, low- cost materials, ” he said. “This experience had a great influence on me. I thought it was much more satisfying than making trucks.” Gupta continued to design scientific toys that children could build for themselves out of cheap or free parts. Today he is part of the four-person team that runs the Children’s Science Center. Together, they have designed about 800 rubbish-based educational toys so far. Instructions and explanations for all of the toys are available free through their Toys-from-Trash website. “Every day over 50,000 children and teachers across the world watch these videos,” said Gupta. “Thousands of books are downloaded (下载) every day and this fills our hearts with hope and joy.” One of his young students, a girl named Hamsa Padmanabhan, found the pencil toy particularly interesting. “She wrote a 12-page scientific paper on it, which won the second Intel ISEF Top Award of $2,500. Today a minor planet is named after Hamsa,” he said. “Another girl, Durga Jetty, who often learns to make toys from me, made the Bottle Turbine which won her 0.6 million Indian rupees! This is a great achievement.” Needless to say, however, Gupta isn’t in it for the money, nor for the chance to become famous. Instead, he simply wishes to grow a quality in children that he believes they all have. 46. What does the underlined word “scarce” in paragraph 1 probably mean? A. Not fun. B. Not enough. C. Not cheap. D. Not environmentally-friendly. 47. What was affected by Gupta’s attending the program in 2018? A. His plan for a future career. B. His attitude to challenges. C. His interest in science. D. His understanding of scientific toys. 48. What can be learned about Gupta’s Toys- from-Trash website? A. It has helped him become wealthy. B. It is in great demand. C. It has sent free toys to poor kids. D. It mainly aims to instruct teachers. 49. Why does the author mention the two girls in paragraph 5? A. To show Gupta’s influence on children. B. To encourage children to be scientist. C. To introduce the value of Gupta’s students. D. To explain how to make money from science. 50. Which of the following can best describe Gupta? A. Serious and sincere. B. Polite and responsible. C. Creative and caring. D. Productive and talkative. As my plane landed in Pamplona, Spain, I couldn’t help thinking, “As a girl, I’m crazy about going abroad and taking classes in Spanish.” My biggest fear was whether I would be able to communicate with Spanish speakers, and how I would be able to adapt to its culture—so different from America’s, and I’m a girl. After a month of taking classes in Spanish and talking with locals, my language skills improved. When I first started, it was easy to get frustrated when I didn’t understand parts of what my professor was saying, or to feel embarrassed when I had to ask someone to repeat themselves many times. However, people often politely corrected me when I made a mistake, and also offered support and words of encouragement. My growing ability to speak the language made the frustration fade away. And it also helped me advise those with the same fear: speak as much as possible to make it disappear. Another challenge was culture shock. Coming from Seattle, where stores are always open, I had to adjust to stores closing in the afternoons and on Sundays. Plans are made much more slowly, and usually at the last minute, which for someone who values organization and certainty as much as I do, was difficult to get used to. The best way to deal with the culture shock was to change my views. I now appreciate Spanish people’s view: life is more than work, and free time lets people enjoy life outside work with family and friends. Living abroad is always frightening, especially when the language and culture are completely foreign. There will always be challenges, frustrations, and problems. However, learning to deal with them and appreciate the journey has been one of the most valuable things I’ve learned while abroad. 51. What was her biggest fear before she began her life in Spain? But while first impressions are likely to stick, they can — with time and effort — be changed, so that your true talents can be appreciated. First impressions can be changed 【答案】41. C 42. D 43. B 44. C 45. Today, he is part of the four-person team that runs the Children’s Science Center. A. Not fun. B. Not enough. C Not cheap. A Serious and sincere. B. Polite and responsible. C. Creative and caring. D. Productive and talkative. 46. B 47. A 48. B 49. A 50. In the developing world, however, scientific toys are relatively scarce.(发达国家的儿童在科学玩具方面有很多选择。 根据第二段中的“In 2018, he took a one-year leave from his job, and took part in the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Program.(2018年,他请假一年,参加了霍尚加巴德科学教学项目)”和“This experience had a great influence on me. Today a minor planet is named after Hamsa,” he said.(他的一名年轻学生 —— 名叫哈姆萨・帕德马纳班的女孩,觉得这个铅笔玩具特别有趣。“她为此撰写了一篇12页的科学论文,还获得了英特尔国际科学与工程大奖赛二等奖,奖金2500美元。如今,一颗小行星以哈姆萨的名字命名。” 他说道)”和“Another girl, Durga Jetty, who often learns to make toys from me, made the Bottle Turbine which won her 0.6 million Indian rupees! This is a great achievement.(另一个女孩,杜尔加·杰蒂,经常向我学习制作玩具,她制作的瓶子涡轮机赢得了60万印度卢比! 故选A。 根据第三段中的“Gupta continued to design scientific toys that children could build for themselves out of cheap or free parts.(古普塔继续设计儿童可以用廉价或免费零件自己制作的科学玩具)”和“Together, they have designed about 800 rubbish-based educational toys so far.(到目前为止,他们一起设计了大约800款以垃圾为原料的益智玩具)”可知,古普塔利用垃圾等低成本材料设计科学玩具,体现了他的创造力。再根据第二段中的“The objective was to make science fun and exciting for village children using simple, low-cost materials.(其目的是用简单、低成本的材料,让乡村儿童感受到科学的乐趣和魅力)”以及最后一段“Needless to say, however, Gupta isn’t in it for the money, nor for the chance to become famous. Instead, he simply wishes to grow a quality in children that he believes they all have.(不过不用说,古普塔做这件事不是为了钱,也不是为了成名的机会。 As my plane landed in Pamplona, Spain, I couldn’t help thinking, “As a girl, I’m crazy about going abroad and taking classes in Spanish.” My biggest fear was whether I would be able to communicate with Spanish speakers, and how I would be able to adapt to its culture—so different from America’s, and I’m a girl. Yes, I am willing to study abroad because it broadens my horizons and enriches my experiences. 根据第一段中“My biggest fear was whether I would be able to communicate with Spanish speakers, and how I would be able to adapt to its culture—so different from America’s, and I’m a girl.( 我最大的担忧在于能否与西班牙语使用者进行交流,以及如何适应其与美国截然不同的文化——而且我还是个女孩。)” Fear of not communicating and adapting to a different culture. 根据第二段中“However, people often politely corrected me when I made a mistake, and also offered support and words of encouragement. My growing ability to speak the language made the frustration fade away.( 然而,每当我犯错时,人们都会礼貌地纠正我,并且还会给予我支持和鼓励的话语。 It means “disappear” or “vanish”. 根据第三段中“The best way to deal with the culture shock was to change my views. I now appreciate Spanish people’s view: life is more than work, and free time lets people enjoy life outside work with family and friends.(应对文化冲击的最佳方式就是改变自己的观念。 故答案为:She changed her views. 根据最后一段中“Living abroad is always frightening, especially when the language and culture are completely foreign. There will always be challenges, frustrations, and problems. However, learning to deal with them and appreciate the journey has been one of the most valuable things I’ve learned while abroad.(身处异国他乡总是令人感到恐惧,尤其是当语言和文化完全陌生的时候。 故答案为:Frightening but valuable. 根据题干“Are you willing to study abroad if possible? Yes, I am willing to study abroad because it broadens my horizons and enriches my experiences. Dear Chris, I’m Li Jin, an exchange student from China. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours sincerely, Li Jin 【答案】Dear Chris, I’m Li Jin, an exchange student from China.
