Gertrude Ederle was born on October 23, 1905, in New York City. She was the third of six children, and from a young age she showed an endless energy and a love for water. Her father, Henry Ederle, ran a shop which was next to where the family lived. His efforts to keep her safe after a near-drowning (溺水) accident when she was seven led to Gertrude’s first swimming lesson.
Gertrude grew up in a time when women were often stopped from heavy physical activity — and swimming competitions for women were quite new. Despite this, she joined the Women’s Swimming Association (WSA) in New York at about age twelve, and won three medals at the Paris Olympic Games in 1924: two bronze medals and one gold.
But Gertrude’s ambition went beyond Olympic medals. In 1925, she attempted (尝试) to swim across the English Channel — a swim of over twenty miles in cold water. Her first try failed: strong waves and cold weather forced her to give up before completing the crossing. Unstoppable, she trained harder. Wearing special equipment her sister helped design, she made a second attempt on August 6, 1926. This time, she succeeded becoming the first woman to swim the English Channel, and doing so in 14 hours 31 minutes, which beat the men’s record at that time.
Later years were not without hardship. She suffered from hearing loss (丧失) which began when she was young, and in 1933 had a serious back injury (伤). Despite this, she continued her career by teaching children, with a special focus on those who, like her, lived with hearing difficulty. Besides, she also worked with swimming associations. Gertrude passed away on November 30, 2003, aged 98. Her spirit lives on in her records and how she changed old ideas. She helped prove that women could compete and succeed in athletic challenges long considered beyond their reach.
4 What made Gertrude have her first swimming lesson?
A. Her father’s worry. B. Her love for water.
C. The water accident. D. The support of WSA.
5. What can we learn about Gertrude’s crossing the English Channel?
A. She failed several times. B. She broke the men’s record.
C. She attempted twice in a year. D. She made it without any support.
6. Which of the following best describes Gertrude?
A. Talented and creative. B. Responsible and honest.
C. Determined and brave. D. Intelligent and confident.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To encourage overcoming challenges. B. To show women’s potential in sports.
C. To highlight Gertrude’s achievements. D. To introduce an inspiring female figure.
C
In today’s fast-changing society, where new jobs emerge and old ones disappear rapidly, the world of career choices is more difficult and high-risk than ever. Therefore, parents play an important role in guiding their children’s career choices. It’s no longer enough to simply push kids towards traditional “safe” jobs. Proper parental guidance can provide children with the necessary support and direction, helping them get through this challenging journey more successfully.
What often goes ignored, however, is forcing parents’ worries or dreams onto children. For example, some parents push their children towards high-income fields like finance (金融) just because they worry about lacking money. Others may stop their children from pursuing (追求) careers in the arts, thinking their futures are uncertain. Such actions often do more harm than good, as they ignore the child’s unique personalities and their own aspirations (志向) .
To guide properly, open communication is the basis. Parents should create a safe environment where children can discuss their interests freely, without pressure. This means listening carefully and asking thoughtful questions that encourage reflection, rather than offering solutions directly. Questions such as, “What activities would waste your time? ” or “What problems would you like to solve in the world? ” can help inspire deeper thinking. Such discussions should begin early, well before important decisions are made, allowing ample time for exploration and self-awareness to develop.
Teaching decision-making skills is also a key part of guidance. Parents who always decide for their children may weaken their ability to consider choices and take responsibility. A better way is to guide the process itself. By helping children gather information and weigh the good and bad points of different paths, parents equip them with lifelong skills that will help them well in the future.
In conclusion, a parent’s role is to be an advisor, not a director. The child must own their career choices. The goal is to help the child find a path that matches their strengths, interests, and values. Only by guiding with purpose and respect, can parents prepare their children to build careers that are both meaningful and successful.
8. Why should parents guide children’s career choices nowadays?
A. Because safe jobs are unpopular. B. Because traditional jobs are risky.
C. Because job market is more challenging. D. Because parental roles are more important.
9. What can be inferred about parents pushing kids into finance?
A. They think finance is popular. B. They oppose kids’ personality.
C. They know little about finance. D. They care more about income.
10. What does the underlined word “ample” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Enough. B. Short. C. Fixed. D. Valuable.
11. Which is the best title for the text?
A. The Process of Making Decisions B. The Challenge of Modern Jobs
C. The Principle of Career Guidance D. The Power of Open Communication
D
In the United States, butterflies are popular insects and have been usually counted. For many decades, thousands of volunteers have spent lots of time watching and recording them. This passion has resulted in one of the world’s best collections of insect data. However, this information came from many programs across the country, making it hard to see the whole picture.
To get a clear, country- wide understanding, Colin Edwards, an ecologist at the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and a team of more than 30 butterfly researchers brought together and analyzed all these efforts. They gathered a total of 12.6 million butterfly sightings and found that since 2000, the number of butterflies in the United States has fallen by 22%, on average. Only about 39% of the 554 species (物种) examined saw their numbers increase over this time period. And 89% of those more successful species tended to be ones that live closer to human development. They also found that the decline was a very common problem. It didn’t matter much whether the butterflies were big or small, or what kind of place they lived in. Almost all of them faced difficulties over the past two decades.
Researchers believe three major factors are causing this decline. The first is habitat (栖息地) loss. As natural lands are turned into farms or cities, the places where butterflies need to live and grow are becoming smaller. Second, chemicals used in modern farming also harm many species directly. Toxic sprays (有毒喷雾) on cornfields can poison adult butterflies that feed on nearby flowers, and weed- killers kill the plants that young butterflies need to eat. Finally, higher temperatures make some places too dry—for example, dry weather in California has killed the plants that monarch butterflies depend on, making them leave their homes.
Addressing any of these three factors will take national or international action. This includes limiting greenhouse gas emissions (温室气体排放) and managing the use of certain pesticides (杀虫剂) . We can’t change climate change ourselves, but habitat loss is something we can really affect.
12. What do we know about the data collected before?
A. It lacked a national view. B. It covered various species.
C. It was managed by a research team. D. It was gathered over a short period.
13. How does the author present findings in paragraph 2?
A. By listing examples. B. By providing data.
C. By making comparisons. D. By giving definitions.
14. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A The harm of farming chemicals to butterflies.
B. The importance of natural lands to butterflies.
C. The reasons for the decrease of butterfly populations.
D. The impact of climate change on butterfly populations.
15. What might the author continue talking about?
A. Plans to regulate pesticide use. B. Ways to protect butterfly habitats.
C. Efforts to monitor climate change. D. Methods to reduce greenhouse gases.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Emma was a talented singer, but a coming competition made her extremely nervous. She had practiced for weeks, yet the pressure kept building. Her older sister, Mia, a student from a music college, had always been her biggest supporter. Since they were young, Mia attended every performance, cheering loudly and offering encouragement. This time, Mia offered to help Emma practice at home.
One evening, in their living room, Emma sang her chosen song. Mia listened carefully but soon started pointing out problems. “Your voice sounds shaky (颤抖的) when you sang the last line,” she said gently. “Try to breathe deeper.” Emma nodded and tried to do better. However, as they continued, Mia added more comments.
Actually, Emma knew every single one of Mia’s suggestions was correct. Yet, the more she tried to fix the problems, the tighter her throat felt. She took a deeper breath as advised, but she kept failing. She wasn’t just singing poorly; she was singing worse than before. With each failure, she became more and more anxious.
Finally, the breaking point came. “Stop criticizing (批评) me. You’re just making things worse” she shouted angrily. Shocked, Mia fell into silence, looking at her with a hurt expression. Later, Mia left the room without another word.
For the next few days, the sisters avoided each other. Emma sang better after calming down, but something felt missing. She remembered all the times Mia had been there for her; staying up late to listen, bringing water during practice, and celebrating every small success. On the night before the competition, Emma lay in bed, realizing that Mia’s words came from love — she only wanted to help Emma improve. Feeling regretful, she went to sleep with a heavy heart.
The next day, Emma still felt bad, but she had to get up — it was the day of the competition. Without her sister by her side, she washed and ate breakfast in low spirits. Before leaving, she noticed Mia’s door was still closed. “She will not come to watch me perform this time,” she thought sadly.
注意:
1. 续写词数应150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As Emma waited backstage, her hands shook and her heart raced.

4. What made Gertrude have her first swimming lesson?
A. Her father’s worry. B. Her love for water.
C. The water accident. D. The support of WSA.
5. What can we learn about Gertrude’s crossing the English Channel?
A. She failed several times. B. She broke the men’s record.
C. She attempted twice in a year. D. She made it without any support.
6. Which of the following best describes Gertrude?
A. Talented and creative. B. Responsible and honest.
C. Determined and brave. D. Intelligent and confident.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?

【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中“Therefore, parents play an important role in guiding their children’s career choices. It’s no longer enough to simply push kids towards traditional “safe” jobs.
A. The harm of farming chemicals to butterflies.
【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. B

As the first semester of senior high is ending, I’m struggling with subject choosing and have different ideas from my parents.
I’m passionate about history and want to choose it, as I’m curious about the past and good at analyzing historical events. But my parents insist I pick physics, saying it offers more career options and better future prospects. 第二节 (满分25分)

【答案】范文
As Emma waited backstage, her hands shook and her heart raced. Suddenly, memories flooded in — Mia staying up late to help her practice, the proud smile when she hit high notes, and even the patient corrections. A wave of regret washed over her, but it strangely steadied her voice. When her name was called, she walked onstage, picturing Mia’s encouraging face in the crowd. To her astonishment, there Mia stood in the front row, tears glistening in her eyes. Fueled by this sight, Emma sang with newfound confidence, pouring her heart into every note.
After the impressive performance, Emma ran off the stage and rushed to Mia. “I’m so sorry,” Emma choked out, tears streaming down. Mia hugged her tightly, whispering, “I’ve always believed in you. You were perfect.” Emma pulled back, smiling through tears. “I finally understood — your critiques were gifts, not judgments. Thank you for never giving up on me.” Mia wiped Emma’s cheeks gently. “Sisters stick together, remember? Now let’s celebrate your victory!” Hand in hand, they walked toward the applause, their bond stronger than ever.
