The Answer Is Right There above You
If you put a buzzard in a fence six to eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be an absolute prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten to twelve feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.
The ordinary bat flying around at night is a remarkable quick-moving creature in the air. But placed on the floor or flat ground, it has to shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.
A bumblebee if dropped into an open tumbler (平底玻璃杯) will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but keeps trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom.
In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bumblebee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations, not realizing that the answer is right there above them.
13.Based on Paragraph 1, in what case can a buzzard fly?
A.It’s not old enough. B.It’s got enough space to run.
C.It’s a prisoner in a small jail. D.It’s caught in a fence.
14.The underlined word “shuffle” (in para. 2) is closest in meaning to “________”.
A.run fast B.mix up C.fly low D.walk slowly
15.How can the bumblebee get out of an open tumbler by itself according to the text?
A.It can be taken out. B.It can get out through the side.
C.It can escape at the top. D.It can jump up from the bottom.
16.The author expresses his views by________.
A.making a comparison B.using examples
C.making a speech D.giving advice
【答案】13.B 14.D 15.C 16.A
根据第一段中“The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten to twelve feet. Without space to run, as is its habit, it will not even attempt to fly, but remain a prisoner for life in a small jail with no top.
根据第二段中“The ordinary bat flying around at night is a remarkable quick-moving creature in the air. But placed on the floor or flat ground, it has to shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight elevation from which it can throw itself into the air.
根据第三段中“A bumblebee if dropped into an open tumbler (平底玻璃杯) will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but keeps trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom.
文章先分别描述了秃鹰、蝙蝠、大黄蜂在特定环境下的行为,然后在最后一段“In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bumblebee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations, not realizing that the answer is right there above them. 故选A。

故填on。
分析可知,“the end of summer(夏天的结束)”与“the start of autumn(秋天的开始)”为并列关系,用并列连词and连接。故填and。
“It is time to do...”,固定句型,意为“到做某事的时间了”。故填to gather。
故填is。
特指立秋的前夕,用定冠词the,“on the eve of...” 故填the。

Many Chinese enjoy eating chilies, but do you know that this spicy vegetable could also be dangerous? A 34-year-old US man was killed after eating a Carolina Reaper, the hottest chili in the world. After taking just a small part of the chili, the man had a serious headache in the following days.
In fact, eating spicy food causes stomachaches and headaches. But if chilies are bad for people, why do they like to eat this vegetable? That’s because there are some special things in chilies. In some cases, eating chilies can make people happy.
And chilies are good in another way. Scientists found that the death rate (死亡率) of those who eat spicy food once or twice a week is 10% lower than those who don’t eat it.
