Shanghai has just opened its first “forest library” to the public. It has caught much attention from book lovers and people who like nature. Unlike traditional indoor libraries, the “forest library” is special because it is built to keep the forest as it is—every tree, bush (灌木) and green area stays natural.
The library is called Read & Joy Forest. It is located (位于) in a green space next to Shanghai Library East. It covers 20,546 square meters and is fully open-air. There are rows of strong wooden benches (长凳) for readers to sit comfortably. A small information desk with volunteers is there to help visitors. Green areas are connected by winding (蜿蜒的) wooden walkways that fit well with nature. The forest has many kinds of trees, like tall pine (松树) trees and leafy maple (枫树) trees. This way, visitors can walk slowly through the quiet, green forest and also get a rare (难得的) chance to relax with a book while hearing birds sing and leaves move.
People love reading here. Wang Xiaohua, said, “I love the fresh air and the way sunlight comes through the trees. Being around nature calms me down. So I’ll come back every weekend for sure.” Another reader added, “I worked indoors all morning, looking at a screen. So I came here to breathe fresh air. The smell of pine and soil is so relaxing. It’s the perfect place to slow down and enjoy a good book.”
Young adults visit the “forest library” most because they want a quiet place away from city life. When they are not reading, many walk slowly along the wooden paths. They sometimes stop to enjoy the trees or listen to the forest sound. So the “forest library” is not just for reading—it’s also a peaceful place to relax both mind and body.

Many parents think that it’s very difficult to get their children to do chores. But I don’t think it is difficult.
My daughter Ann is ten years old. At night, I make her a chore list for the following days. Then I stick (粘) the list on her door. Usually she gets three to eight chores a day. It depends on how well she does chores. If she does all of her chores well, she can get some pocket money (零用钱) from her parents the next day. The chores are some easy ones, such as sweeping the floor, folding the clothes and cleaning the table after dinner.
For my other two children, the chores are easier because they are very young. My elder son knows how to put empty dinner plates in the dishwasher. Fiona was a popular girl in her school. From an early age, she tried to be nice and kind to every classmate. She often invited all her classmates to her birthday party and sometimes gave them small gifts.
But things changed on the International Day of Friendship. On that day, the teacher asked everyone to make three gifts for three best friends. Fiona was happy to pick three classmates to give gifts to. However, after all gifts were given out, she was the only one who didn’t get any gift! She felt really sad and cried for a long time.
After this activity, she realized that she was a good classmate, but not a true friend to anyone. Although she tried to be close to everyone, that wasn’t enough to have real friendships.
That night, Fiona told her mother about everything. Her mother said, “My dear, you cannot buy friends just with a few gifts. If you want true friends, you must give them time and real care.”
After hearing this, Fiona decided to change herself to become such a true friend. That night, when she was in bed, she thought about how her mother always helped her, accepted (接受) her mistakes, encouraged her, and loved her deeply—and that’s exactly how a true friend should be.

Many animals have special meanings in Chinese culture. Let me introduce (介绍) three of them—the turtle, the deer, and the crane (鹤).
The Long-Lived Turtle
Turtles are slow-moving animals with hard shells (壳). They usually live in rivers, lakes or oceans. In China, turtles are a symbol of long life. That’s because they can live for many years. A long time ago, some Chinese people used turtle shells. They wanted to guess what would happen later. Turtles also love their homes very much. No matter where they go, they take their “shell homes” with them.
The Pure Crane
Cranes are tall birds. They have long legs and long necks. They live near water. In old Chinese stories, people thought cranes were magic. They would take kind and smart people to heaven. When artists paint pine trees, they like to draw a crane next to them. This shows the hope for a happy life.
The Lucky Deer
Deer are shy animals. They run fast and have branched antlers (角). They always live in forests and grasslands. In Chinese culture, deer mean good luck and success. That’s because the Chinese word for “deer” sounds like the word for “money and success (禄lù)”. A long time ago, Chinese emperors liked to hunt deer. They did this to show their power.
1.Is the turtle a symbol of long life?
2.Why do deer mean good luck and success in Chinese culture?
3.From what aspects (方面) does the writer introduce the three animals?
4.Please introduce another animal in the same way. (About 20 words)
【答案】1.Yes, it is. 2.Because the Chinese word for “deer” sounds like the word for “money and success”. 3.Appearance, living place and cultural meaning. 4.The fish is small, lives in rivers or lakes, and is a symbol of wealth because “fish” sounds like “surplus”.

As time goes by, more and more wild animals are in great danger and some even died out. In order to make money, some people kill too many animals and sell their fur in the shopping centre and their meat to restaurants in the world.
Tibetan antelopes usually live in groups. Their wool (羊毛) is warm and fine, so people can use it to make expensive clothes. That’s why so many antelopes are killed. Although people can get the wool without killing the animals, they simply kill them before taking the wool. The number of Tibetan antelopes is dropping year by year. And there are fewer than 75,000 Tibetan antelopes left in the world now.
As human beings continue to develop (发展), animals’ homes are becoming fewer and fewer. A long time ago, thylacines lived in the wild and they were very happy and free. But as humans made the wild land become their own farms, thylacines didn’t have enough food to eat or places to live in. So they started to eat farmers’ animals. Farmers hated thylacines very much and then they killed hundreds of them.
Some animals get endangered or die out because of the changes of the environment. White-coated weasels live in a forest in Poland. They have white fur in winter. Their white fur is the same colour as snow so other animals have a hard time finding them. But scientists found that between 1997 and 2007, the number of snowy days in the weasels’ environment dropped from 80 days to 40 days. Many of the white-coated weasels were eaten by other animals.
1.What do people kill many Tibetan antelopes for?
2.Why did farmers hate thylacines very much?
3.How does the white fur of white-coated weasels help them keep safe?
4.What are the TWO reasons for some animals getting endangered or dying out from this passage?
5.What can we students do to protect wild animals in our daily life?
【答案】1.For their wool/To make expensive clothes./For making expensive clothes. 2.Because (thylacines didn’t have enough food to eat or places to live in, so) they killed/ate farmers’ animals. 3.Their white fur is the same color as snow, so other animals have a hard time finding them. 4.Humans’ activities/actions/killings and the changes of the environment./People kill animals for the money and the environment changes. 5.We can refuse to buy things made of wild animals’ fur.
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,文章主要讲述了由于人类活动以及环境变化,越来越多的野生动物处于濒危状态甚至灭绝,介绍了不同动物濒危或灭绝的原因,并呼吁大家保护野生动物。
1.根据第二段中“Their wool (羊毛) is warm and fine, so people can use it to make expensive clothes. That’s why so many antelopes are killed.”可知,藏羚羊的羊毛温暖而细密,人们可以用它来制作昂贵的衣服,这就是人们捕杀这么多藏羚羊的原因。故填For their wool/To make expensive clothes./For making expensive clothes.
2.根据第三段中“But as humans made the wild land become their own farms, thylacines didn’t have enough food to eat or places to live in. So they started to eat farmers’ animals. Farmers hated thylacines very much...”可知,袋狼没有足够的食物吃,也没有地方住,所以它们开始吃农民的动物,因此农民非常讨厌袋狼。故填Because (thylacines didn’t have enough food to eat or places to live in, so) they killed/ate farmers’ animals.
3.根据第四段中“They have white fur in winter. Their white fur is the same colour as snow so other animals have a hard time finding them.”可知,白鼬的白色皮毛和雪的颜色一样,所以其他动物很难找到它们,这有助于它们保持安全。故填Their white fur is the same color as snow, so other animals have a hard time finding them.
4.根据第一段中“In order to make money, some people kill too many animals...”,第三段中“As human beings continue to develop (发展), animals’ homes are becoming fewer and fewer...”以及第四段中“Some animals get endangered or die out because of the changes of the environment.”可知,一些动物濒危或灭绝的两个原因是:人类的活动/捕杀以及环境的变化。故填Humans’ activities/actions/killings and the changes of the environment./People kill animals for the money and the environment changes.
5.本题为开放性试题,言之有理即可,答案可以为“我们可以拒绝购买用野生动物的皮毛制成的东西”,故填We can refuse to buy things made of wild animals’ fur.

Mars, robots, higher prices and more
What will the world look like in 2045? I recently talked with four American students. Caden Sorensen, Chandler Stark, Fatima Abdi and Noelani Velasco Polley, to get their thoughts on this question.
In 2045, the kids think, humans will be able to live on Mars. They suggest that everyone should spend a few years on the red planet to give the Earth a “rest”. “And when we come back, we must try not to pollute as much.” says Stark.
But Mars is not yet ready for human habitation (居住). The kids agree that immediate action must be taken to clean up the Earth. “It’s time to fix it now.” says Sorensen. “It’s not going to fix itself.”
The kids do not just care about progress in space exploration. They are also interested in the future jobs.
Stark hopes to compose (创作) music for TV shows one day. Abdi wants to be a business owner. Sorensen dreams about becoming a lawyer. Polley wants to be a scientist.
“I don’t think there will be a lot of fast-food jobs,” says Abdi. She also thinks that everything is going to get a lot more expensive. “People will have to look for higher-paying jobs. ”
Many jobs, the kids predict (预测), will be replaced by robots. “There’ll be no more factory jobs because robots can just do everything.” says Stark. But they believe the power to shape the future is in humans’ hands. “The world will be a better place, but of course, we need to work hard, and we all need to learn to be kind to others. ”

Joking can be a cheerful thing. However, sometimes people may see it differently. Some people may get hurt if there are too many jokes. When you show you can’t accept the jokes, the jokes might get worse.
We should consider the relationships when joking. Close friends usually enjoy teasing (开玩笑). Healthy teasing can usually make people relaxed. When both sides know it’s just joking, they can understand each other better. The environment is also important for close relationships. It doesn’t matter when your sister calls your nickname (绰号) at home. However, it’s quite bad when a classmate shouts it out at school.
When making a joke, we often see the funny side of it. But others may see it in a different way. Sometimes we forget the other person may not find it funny. People have different life experiences, so they understand jokes differently. For example, imagine someone not swimming at a pool party. Others might tease him or her about being unable to swim. But maybe that person is just afraid of water. Keep in mind that people may have their own reasons for not seeing the funny side.
It’s a good way to build good friendships by respecting others. In daily life, we should pay attention to our words when playing jokes.

Sometimes our friends make us unhappy, and we might want to talk to them. But how can we make these talks easier? Here are some tips.
Describe the problem clearly. It’s important for you to know what the problem is. Once you know the problem, you can explain how it influences you. Saying “I feel hurt that you spend less time with me.” is better than “You never spend time with me!”
Staying calm during the talk is necessary. If you get angry, it might lead to a fight. You can tell your friend that this talk makes you feel a little nervous. In this way, you will show your kindness.
Never mind who is right or who is wrong. It’s important to listen to your friend’s opinion. Don’t just pay attention to proving (证明) yourself right. You can try to understand how he or she feels. This can help you solve the problem quickly.
Listen and plan. You can lower (降低) the chances of arguing by listening carefully to your friend. Many experts suggest planning what you want to say, so you can say it in a way that doesn’t create trouble.
Don’t be too anxious (焦急的). It’s useless to be anxious because difficult problems can’t be solved in just one talk. Think about what can be solved in one discussion and go for it. This will help you set goals you can achieve.

1.What makes the “forest library” special?
2.Where is Read & Joy Forest located?
3.According to the passage, who visits the “forest library” most?
4.What do you think of the “forest library”? Why do you think so? (Please give two reasons.)

My 19-month-old little son helps me put the dirty clothes in the washing machine when I am doing the washing. They can also help me when I’m working in the yard. They both help me pick up the sticks and throw them away.
1.Where does the writer stick the chore list?
2.How many chores does Ann usually get each day?
3.What chores does Ann usually do?
4.What can Ann get the next day if she does well?
5.What do you think about doing chores?

My family always has family dinners, as far as I can remember. When I was a little boy, my mother began to ask us to go to family dinners at least once a week. Every Sunday, my mother will buy a lot of food and bring it to my grandma’s house. We will wait for more family members to come before eating together at the table, my grandma’s dinner table. In the past, I felt that tradition (传统) was a little boring.
However, I find it’s fantastic to get together as a family now. For me, dinner is not just a meal, but a good time to talk and play with family. Every time I sit at the dinner table, my grandma’s dinner table, I look around and find so many people who truly love me. It makes me feel so happy.
Finally, I understand the true meaning of this tradition. It’s not about the dinners or activities. It’s about family, a group of people who care about each other.

1.What did Fiona often do to show her kindness?
2.What did the teacher ask students to do on the International Day of Friendship?
3.How did Fiona feel after finding out she was the only one without any gift?
4.Did Fiona’s mother think people could buy friends with a few gifts?

Guilin rice noodles are a very popular traditional food from Guilin, Guangxi. The noodles taste very special, so many tourists love them a lot. In 2021, the government (政府) added the special way of making noodles to China Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录), making it an important part of Chinese culture.
Long Fusun is a cook who is good at making these traditional rice noodles. He has been making noodles for 40 years. He works hard to teach others his skills, so these skills won’t be lost. In 1983, when Long was still a high school student, he started learning to make noodles in a small shop. “It was really hard to learn,” he said. “The soup needed many different spices (调味料), and we had no tools to weigh them. We had to guess the weight with our hands.” This hands-on practice helped him know how much spice to use. Good soup is what makes Guilin rice noodles so delicious. When he was 20, Long opened his first rice noodle shop. Now, his shops are very famous in Guilin and have become a popular brand (品牌). To share his skills, Long often teaches his students carefully. Besides this, he also works with some cooking schools. He hopes more people will learn how to make Guilin rice noodles in the future.
Long’s biggest dream is to let the whole world know Guilin’s taste. “Ten years ago, I opened a factory. Shops all over China can buy noodle materials (原料) from it,” he said. “My next goal is to sell my products (产品) in other countries.”

1.What may happen if there are too many jokes?
2.How do people usually feel about healthy teasing?
3.What is also important for close relationships?
4.Why do people understand jokes differently?
5.How can we build good relationships?

1.What might we do if our friends make us unhappy?
2.What is necessary during the talk?
3.How can we lower the chances of arguing?
