In my early forties, I began painting with watercolours. Each brushstroke on paper turned into a personal language, allowing me to express the inexpressible. The feeling of colour being absorbed into the paper was calming, yet it left me longing for something deeper. Over time, I became more interested in oil paints. Although they took longer to dry, they offered me a sense of control. Layers of paints combined smoothly, creating a three-dimensional effect that watercolours couldn’t copy. Oil paints granted me the precious opportunity to take a few steps back, as if I were a curious explorer approaching a hidden landscape.
However, working with oil paints wasn’t easy. Getting the right shine or thickness required patience, and at times, I felt annoyed by my lack of progress. Colours didn’t always behave as expected, and I struggled to achieve the vision in my mind. But the more I persisted, the more I understood oil paints. They balanced softness with depth, giving me the chance to create both delicate and grand images. The process of painting became reflective, a practice of exploring colours, textures (纹理) and emotions — sometimes rough, sometimes peaceful, but always rewarding.
One evening, I noticed a strange shade of blue on my canvas (画布). It seemed out of place, as if it didn’t belong. My heart skipped a beat, and I stared at it, uncertain if it was part of my recent work or a trick of the eye. As I stepped back to examine the canvas, the blue shade slowly began to make sense. It was not an error but an invitation — an unplanned element that added depth to the piece in a way I hadn’t expected. At that moment, I realised that painting, much like life, was not about complete control but about embracing the unexpected.
From then on, I approached my work with a new sense of curiosity. I let colours blend more freely, allowed accidental mistakes to become part of the composition, and accepted that every brushstroke carried its own story. Oil painting not only gave me a medium to express myself but also taught me patience, resilience, and the beauty of discovery.
Looking at my finished work, I no longer saw just layers of paints. I saw moments of struggle, joy, and growth woven into the canvas — a reminder that art, like any, is as much about the process as it is about the final masterpiece.
24.Why did the author turn to oil paints?
A.To enhance creativity. B.To save painting time.
C.To seek deeper artistic control. D.To improve painting skills.
25.What challenge did the author face when working with oil paints?
A.Balancing softness and sharpness. B.Creating a three-dimensional effect.
C.Achieving the right shine and thickness. D.Controlling the drying time of the paints.
26.What message does the author want to convey?
A.Art is a journey of welcoming imperfections.
B.A good picture is worth a thousand words.
C.Beauty is the ultimate goal of fine art.
D.Creating is about exploring ideal self.

In recent research, my colleagues and I set out to investigate the neural (神经的) mechanisms underlying experiences like solving challenging problems. Specifically, we wanted to understand what happens in the brain while a person engages in abstract and demanding thought — so we designed a study involving math expertise.
For our experiment, we selected 22 university students majoring in mathematics, along with 22 students from other disciplines. We asked the students to watch step-by-step presentations that explained how to solve several challenging math problems. Throughout this demonstration, the students wore a cap covered with electrodes (电极) so that we could track electrical activity in their brains. After each presentation, they had to report whether they thought they had understood the presentations and how engaged they felt during the experience.
We found that students whose coursework involved little mathematics showed more signs of complex activity in the prefrontal cortex (皮层), indicating how hard they were working to understand the various steps of the complex math demonstrations. However, in the other group, we noted significant activity linking the frontal and parietal (顶骨) regions of their brain. More specifically, these areas exhibited a pattern of activity described as delta waves.
Some recent research suggests that these delta waves may play a crucial role in the cognitive (认知的) processing that supports deep internal concentration and the relocation of information between distant brain regions. In fact, we suspect that the long-distance delta waves we observed may play a central role whenever people engage in contextual and complex problem-solving. This suggests that engaging brain networks in this way could be useful for many tasks requiring concentration. It’s likely that when people with extensive experience in a task are deeply engaged in that effort, these same delta waves are involved, even as the specific brain networks vary. It’s also possible — though we’ll need to investigate further to be sure — that this state of deep concentration is generalizable: developing this way of thinking in one domain could help you in others.
These findings suggest a trade-off that people should keep in mind—particularly as artificial intelligence and other tools offer shortcuts for various forms of problem-solving. Each time we offload a problem to a calculator or ask Al to summarize an essay, we lose an opportunity to improve our own skills and practice deep concentration. To be clear, technologies can boost our efficiency in important ways, but the seemingly “inefficient” hard work we do can be powerful, too.
27.Based on the study results, how do Math majors process challenging math problems differently from non-Math majors?
A.They experience less engagement during problem-solving tasks.
B.They use more areas of their prefrontal cortex to solve problems.
C.They display delta wave activity linking frontal and parietal regions.
D.They show slower overall brain activity during complex problem-solving.
28.What does the underlined word “trade-off” in the last paragraph probably refer to?
A.Weighing short-term efficiency against lasting cognitive benefits.
B.Choosing between immediate convenience and faster results.
C.Sacrificing technology’s advantage for human competition.
D.Deciding between human effort and advanced tools.
29.Which of the following best summarizes the author’s view on the role of “inefficient” work?
A.It allows the brain to build skills that are transferable to other tasks.
B.It wastes time and resources compared to using technology.
C.It improves engagement but has no cognitive benefits.
D.It helps those who are good at subjects like math.
30.What is the best title for the passage?
A.Which to Choose: Efficiency or Hard Work?
B.What Benefits Us More: AI Tools or Deep Concentration?
C.Employing Complex Math Problems to Enhance Delta Waves
D.Developing Expertise Improves the Brain’s Ability to Concentrate
【答案】27.C 28.A 29.A 30.D
根据第三段“We found that students whose coursework involved little mathematics showed more signs of complex activity in the prefrontal cortex (皮层), indicating how hard they were working to understand the various steps of the complex math demonstrations. However, in the other group, we noted significant activity linking the frontal and parietal (顶骨) regions of their brain. More specifically, these areas exhibited a pattern of activity described as delta waves.(我们发现,那些课程中涉及数学较少的学生,在前额皮层表现出更多复杂活动的迹象,这表明他们在努力理解复杂数学演示的各个步骤时有多费劲。然而,在另一组学生中,我们注意到他们大脑的前额和顶骨区域之间有显著的活动联系。更具体地说,这些区域表现出一种被称为德尔塔波的活动模式)”可知,数学专业学生表现出连接前额和顶骨区域的德尔塔波活动。故选C。
28.词句猜测题。根据最后一段“Each time we offload a problem to a calculator or ask Al to summarize an essay, we lose an opportunity to improve our own skills and practice deep concentration. To be clear, technologies can boost our efficiency in important ways, but the seemingly “inefficient” hard work we do can be powerful, too.(每次我们把一个问题交给计算器,或者让人工智能总结一篇文章,我们就失去了一个提高自己技能和练习深度专注的机会。需要明确的是,技术可以在重要方面提高我们的效率,但我们所做的看似“低效”的辛勤工作也可能是强大的)”可知,划线词所在句子表示“人们应该牢记一种权衡——尤其是人工智能和其他工具为各种形式的问题解决提供了捷径”,划线词trade-off意为“权衡”,和“Weighing short-term efficiency against lasting cognitive benefits”意思相近。故选A。
根据倒数第二段“It’s also possible — though we’ll need to investigate further to be sure — that this state of deep concentration is generalizable: developing this way of thinking in one domain could help you in others.(还有一种可能——尽管我们还需要进一步调查才能确定——这种深度集中的状态是可以推广的:在一个领域培养这种思维方式可能有助于你在其他领域也表现出色。)”和最后一段“To be clear, technologies can boost our efficiency in important ways, but the seemingly “inefficient” hard work we do can be powerful, too.(需要明确的是,技术可以在很多重要方面提高我们的效率,但我们所做的那些看似“低效”的艰苦工作同样具有强大的力量)”可知,最好地概括了作者对“低效”工作的作用的看法是它允许大脑建立可转移到其他任务的技能。故选A。
通读全文,尤其是第三段“We found that students whose coursework involved little mathematics showed more signs of complex activity in the prefrontal cortex (皮层), indicating how hard they were working to understand the various steps of the complex math demonstrations. Who cares if people think wrongly that the internet has had more important influences than the washing machine? Why does it matter that people are more impressed by the most recent changes?
It would not matter if these misjudgments were just a matter of people’s opinions. However, they have real impacts, as they result in misguided use of scarce resources.
The fascination with the ICT(Information and Communication Technology) revolution, represented by the internet, has made some rich countries wrongly conclude that making things is so “yesterday” that they should try to live on ideas. This belief in “post-industrial society” has led those countries to neglect their manufacturing sector(制造业), with negative consequences for their economies.
Even more worryingly, the fascination with the internet by people in rich countries has moved the international community to worry about the “digital divide” between the rich countries and the poor countries. This has led companies and individuals to donate money to developing countries to buy computer equipment and internet facilities. The question, however, is whether this is what the developing countries need the most. Perhaps giving money for those less fashionable things such as digging wells, extending electricity networks and making more affordable washing machines would have improved people’s lives more than giving every child a laptop computer or setting up internet centres in rural villages, I am not saying that those things are necessarily more important, but many donators have rushed into fancy programmes without carefully assessing the relative long-term costs and benefits of alternative uses of their money.
In yet another example, a fascination with the new has led people to believe that the recent changes in the technologies of communications and transportation are so revolutionary that now we live in a “borderless world”. As a result, in the last twenty years or so, many people have come to believe that whatever change is happening today is the result of great technological progress, going against which will be like trying to turn the clock back. Believing in such a world, many governments have put an end to some of the very necessary regulations on cross-border flows of capital, labour and goods, with poor results.
Understanding technological trends is very important for correctly designing economic policies, both at the national and the international levels, and for making the right career choices at the individual level. However, our fascination with the latest, and our under valuation of what has already become common, can, and has, led us in all sorts of wrong directions.
31.Misjudgments on the influences of new technology can lead to ________.
A.a lack of confidence in technology
B.a slow progress in technology
C.a conflict of public opinions
D.a waste of limited resources
32.The example in Paragraph 4 suggests that donators should ________.
A.take people’s essential needs into account
B.make their programmes attractive to people
C.ensure that each child gets financial support
D.provide more affordable internet facilities
33.What has led many governments to remove necessary regulations?
A.Neglecting the impacts of technological advances.
B.Believing that the world has become borderless.
C.Ignoring the power of economic development.
D.Over-emphasizing the role of international communication.
34.What can we learn from the passage?
A.People should be encouraged to make more donations.
B.Traditional technology still has a place nowadays.
C.Making right career choices is crucial to personal success.
D.Economic policies should follow technological trends.
【答案】31.D 32.A 33.B 34.B
However, they have real impacts, as they result in misguided use of scarce resources.
The fascination with the ICT(Information and Communication Technology) revolution, represented by the Internet, has made some rich countries wrongly conclude that making things is so "yesterday" that they should try to live on ideas. This belief in "post-industrial society" has led those countries to neglect their manufacturing sector(制造业) with negative consequences for their economies.
Learning a new language can be a challenging but rewarding journey. Whether you’re studying for travel, work, or personal growth, the right strategies can make the process much easier. Here are five tips to help you become fluent faster:
35 . Instead of focusing only on memorizing vocabulary lists, try to learn words in context. Read short stories, watch TV shows, or listen to podcasts in the language. When you encounter a new word, write down the sentence it’s in — not just the word itself. This helps you understand how the word is used and makes it easier to remember. For example, learning that “llover” means “to rain” is useful, but seeing it in a sentence like “Mañana va a llover” (“It’s going to rain tomorrow”) helps you grasp its usage.
36 . Many people are afraid to speak a new language because they worry about making mistakes. But mistakes are a natural part of learning. Even native speakers make errors! The more you practice speaking — whether with a language partner, a tutor, or even to yourself — the more comfortable you’ll become. Don’t focus on being perfect; focus on communicating your ideas. Over time, your grammar and pronunciation will improve as you learn from your mistakes.
37 . Immersing yourself in the language’s culture can deepen your understanding and make learning more enjoyable. Try cooking traditional recipes from countries where the language is spoken, listening to local music, or celebrating cultural holidays. Not only will this make learning more fun, but it will also help you understand the nuances of the language. For example, certain phrases or idioms might make more sense when you know the cultural context behind them.
38 . Consistency is key when learning a new language. It’s better to study for 15-20 minutes every day than to cram for several hours once a week. Set a specific time each day for language practice — maybe during your morning coffee or before bed — and stick to it. You can use apps, flashcards, or online courses to make daily practice easy. Over time, these short sessions will add up, and you’ll notice significant progress.
39 . Tracking your progress can keep you motivated. Keep a journal where you write a few sentences in the new language each day, and look back at it after a month — you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve improved. Celebrate small wins, like having a short conversation or understanding a song lyric. Learning a language takes time, so be patient with yourself and acknowledge every step forward.
A.Practice speaking without fear of mistakes
B.Learn words in context, not in isolation
C.Avoid using online language tools
D.Immerse yourself in the culture
E.Study for long hours once a week
F.Practice consistently, even for short periods
G.Track your progress and celebrate small wins
【答案】35.B 36.A 37.D 38.F 39.G
35.由下文“Instead of focusing only on memorizing vocabulary lists, try to learn words in context. Read short stories, watch TV shows, or listen to podcasts in the language. When you encounter a new word, write down the sentence it’s in — not just the word itself. (不要只专注于记忆词汇表,试着在语境中学习单词。阅读短篇故事,看该语言的电视节目,或者听播客。当你遇到一个新单词时,写下它所在的句子,而不仅仅是单词本身)”可知,此段主要强调要在语境中学习单词,并举例进行说明,B选项“Learn words in context, not in isolation (在语境中学习单词,而不是孤立地学习)”引出下文内容,符合语境。故选B。
36.由下文“Many people are afraid to speak a new language because they worry about making mistakes. But mistakes are a natural part of learning. Even native speakers make errors! The more you practice speaking — whether with a language partner, a tutor, or even to yourself — the more comfortable you’ll become. (很多人害怕说一门新语言,因为他们担心犯错。但错误是学习过程中自然的一部分。即使是母语者也会犯错!你练习说英语越多——无论是和语言伙伴、导师,甚至是和自己说——你就会越自在)”可知,此段主要讲不要害怕犯错,要多练习说新语言,A选项“Practice speaking without fear of mistakes (不要害怕犯错,练习说)”强调不害怕犯错,并要练习说新语言,引出下文内容,符合语境。故选A。
37.由下文“Immersing yourself in the language’s culture can deepen your understanding and make learning more enjoyable. Try cooking traditional recipes from countries where the language is spoken, listening to local music, or celebrating cultural holidays. 38.由下文“Consistency is key when learning a new language. It’s better to study for 15-20 minutes every day than to cram for several hours once a week. Set a specific time each day for language practice — maybe during your morning coffee or before bed — and stick to it. (学习一门新语言时,一致性是关键。每天学习15-20分钟比每周一次突击学习几个小时要好。每天设定一个特定的时间进行语言练习——也许是在早上喝咖啡时或睡前——并坚持下去)”可知,此段主要讲学习语言要每天坚持,哪怕时间短,F选项“Practice consistently, even for short periods (即使时间短,也要坚持练习)”强调在时间短的条件下也要坚持练习,引出下文内容,符合语境。故选F。
39.由下文“Tracking your progress can keep you motivated. Keep a journal where you write a few sentences in the new language each day, and look back at it after a month — you’ll be amazed at how much you’ve improved. Celebrate small wins, like having a short conversation or understanding a song lyric.
I started running competitively almost as soon as I could walk. I was three years old when I joined in my first official race. My mom and both of my brothers were runners, so the sport was built into my life from the beginning. When I was young, I enjoyed the freedom, joy, and sense of power running gave me. This pure, concentrated love of the sport gave me wings that carried me through even the toughest practices and races.
However, as I got older, pressure began to build up. I was winning, but I lost sight of my real purpose as a runner: to have fun. I even began to fear hard workouts, knowing I would be disappointed if I didn’t achieve my goals. Before the final season in my high school career, I trained so hard that I got exhausted and hurt my calf. Rather than pausing for treatment and recovery, I chose to get to the line. But at last, I had to step off the track because the pain was simply unbearable.
Recovery was tough. When I was finally able to run again, I was out of shape and couldn’t keep up with my team. Over the next three years, more injuries followed. But later, a famous long-distance runner Cathy’s post changed everything for me. “Every day, I make the choice to show up and see what I’ve got, and to try and be better. My advice: Keep showing up.” With just a few words, she reminded me how simple running really is. I realized I didn’t have to be perfect every day. I just had to show up and give what I had.
Now, I still run every day and have completed four marathons. Joy and gratitude are the center of my practice. Thanks to Cathy, I can always return to the calming belief that things will go my way if I just keep showing up.
40.What did running bring to the author when she was young?
41.Why did the author no longer enjoy running later?
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
> Inspired by Cathy’s post, the author realized that she had to focus on pursuing perfection.
43.From the story, what can you learn about “Keep showing up”? (In about 40 words)
40.The freedom, joy, and sense of power. 41.Because pressure began to build up. 42.Inspired by Cathy’s post, the author realized that she had to focus on pursuing perfection. Because the author realized that she didn’t have to be perfect every day. 43.It means consistently trying without demanding perfection. By showing up and doing your best, progress and joy will follow naturally.
根据第一段“When I was young, I enjoyed the freedom, joy, and sense of power running gave me.(当我年轻的时候,我喜欢跑步给我的自由、快乐和力量感)”可知,在作者年轻的时候,跑步给她带来了自由、快乐和力量的感觉。 The freedom, joy, and sense of power.
根据第二段“However, as I got older, pressure began to build up. I was winning, but I lost sight of my real purpose as a runner: to have fun. I even began to fear hard workouts, knowing I would be disappointed if I didn’t achieve my goals.(然而,随着年龄的增长,压力开始累积。我赢了,但我忘记了我作为一名跑步者的真正目的:获得乐趣。我甚至开始害怕艰苦的锻炼,因为我知道如果我没有达到我的目标我会很失望)”可知,因为压力开始累积,所以作者后来不再喜欢跑步了。故答案为Because pressure began to build up.
根据第三段“But later, a famous long-distance runner Cathy’s post changed everything for me. “Every day, I make the choice to show up and see what I’ve got, and to try and be better. My advice: Keep showing up.” With just a few words, she reminded me how simple running really is. I realized I didn’t have to be perfect every day. I just had to show up and give what I had.(但后来,一位著名的长跑运动员凯西的帖子彻底改变了我。“每一天,我都选择出现在跑道上,看看自己能做到什么程度,并努力超越自我。我的建议是:坚持跑下去。”短短几句话让我恍然大悟——跑步的本质原来如此简单。我明白了不必苛求每天表现完美,只需坚持站上跑道,全力以赴)”可知,受到Cathy帖子的启发,作者意识到不必苛求每天表现完美,只需坚持站上跑道,全力以赴,所以“Inspired by Cathy’s post, the author realized that she had to focus on pursuing perfection.”中“had to focus on pursuing perfection.” The author realized that she didn’t have to be perfect every day. Inspired by Cathy’s post, the author realized that she had to focus on pursuing perfection. Because the author realized that she didn’t have to be perfect every day.
如:根据第三段“But later, a famous long-distance runner Cathy’s post changed everything for me. “Every day, I make the choice to show up and see what I’ve got, and to try and be better. My advice: Keep showing up.” With just a few words, she reminded me how simple running really is. I realized I didn’t have to be perfect every day. I just had to show up and give what I had.(但后来,一位著名的长跑运动员凯西的帖子彻底改变了我。“每一天,我都选择出现在跑道上,看看自己能做到什么程度,并努力超越自我。我的建议是:坚持跑下去。”短短几句话让我恍然大悟——跑步的本质原来如此简单。我明白了不必苛求每天表现完美,只需坚持站上跑道,全力以赴)”可知,“Keep showing up”意味着不断地尝试而不要求完美。通过表现和尽你最大的努力,进步和快乐自然会随之而来。故答案为It means consistently trying without demanding perfection. By showing up and doing your best, progress and joy will follow naturally.

C
