If Confucius (孔子) were still alive today and could celebrate his birthday with a big cake, there would be 2575 candles. He would need a strong wind to help him blow them out.
Many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, but few people in the United States will know his birthday. It’s nothing personal. Most Americans don’t even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.
But this doesn’t mean that Americans don’t care about Confucius. In many ways, he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.
In the past twenty years, the Chinese studies programs have become very popular in Western universities. And more recently, the Chinese government (政府) has set up Confucius Institutes (孔子学院) in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture are usually Chinese art, history and philosophy (哲学). Students in the United States, at the same time, are working hard to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China will be as powerful as the United States.

Schools are going paperless. Offices are going paperless. For my next birthday, I am going paperless, too.
I’m Laura. It’s Saturday today. Next Wednesday is my 13th birthday, which is on December 6th. I am going to do something quite different this year. I won’t write paper cards to my friends and families like I did last year. Instead, I am going to use Evite to send online invitations.
Evite is a popular website. On this website, you can send online invitations. The website has its own designs for you to choose from. You can also make your own designs and upload your designs to the website. It’s free to use the website’s designs. But it takes a little money to use your own designs. I am going to use Evite this year because I want to do something for our environment. It takes 24 trees to make one ton of paper. It saves a great many trees if we stop buying paper cards. The other good thing about Evite? You don’t have to answer lots of calls or read lots of text messages or emails to know if people can come or not. Get onto the website and you will know how many of them can come at once.
When is your next birthday? Are you going to go paperless, too? I believe that if each of us could do something to improve our environment, our planet would be a better place to live on.

In their minds, China was still a developing country, and they couldn’t see why I would like to go there. Passage 2
(24-25八上·湖南长沙明德教育集团·期末)
