阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
There is an old saying that America and Britain are “two nations divided by a common language.” No one knows exactly who said this, but it reflects the way many Brits feel about American English. But are American and British English really so different?
Vocabulary
The most obvious difference between American and British English is vocabulary. For example, Americans go on vacation while Brits go on holidays; New Yorkers live in apartments while Londoners live in flats. There are far more examples than we can talk about here. Fortunately, most Americans and Brits can usually guess the meaning through the context of a sentence.
Past Tense Verbs
You’ll also find some differences with past forms of irregular verbs. The past tense of “learn” in American English is “learned”. British English has the option (选择) of “learned” or “learnt”. The same rule applies to “dreamed” and “dreamt”, “burned” and “burnt”, and “leaned” and “leant”. Americans tend to use the -ed ending; Brits tend to use the -t ending.
Spelling
There are hundreds of slight spelling differences between British and American English. Noah Webster, an author, politician and teacher, made an effort to reform English spelling in the late 1700s. Webster wanted to spell words the way they sounded. You can see Webster’s legacy (遗产) in the American spelling of words like color (from colour), honor (from honour), and labor (from labour).
Not So Different After All
British and American English have far more similarities than differences. With the exception of some regional dialects (方言), most Brits and Americans can understand each other without too much difficulty. They watch each other’s TV shows, sing each other’s songs and read each other’s books. They even make fun of each other’s accents.
26. Which of the following is a group of American words?
A. Vacation; holiday. B. Apartment; flat.
C. Vacation; apartment. D. Holiday; flat.
27. What do we know about British and American English from the last paragraph?
A. They both have some strange words.
B. They are affecting people using them.
C. They connect people of the two countries.
D. Their differences have little effect on communication.
28. Where is the text most likely from?
A. A diary. B. A magazine.
C. A guidebook. D. A novel.

In middle school, I was one of the “gifted” kids. I felt like I was on top of the world. I was able to even use my “gifted” title to get accepted into a famous private high school, something I’d never expected.
Then high school began. All of a sudden, I was no longer at the top of my class. Teachers didn’t look to me for the correct answer. My papers were filled with corrections, not praise. To put it simply, all the straight-As on my report card were quickly disappearing.
My parents’ concern grew — they began to search for tutors and would constantly ask me as if they were trying to find out what was wrong with me. My concern grew too — the pressure to live up to their expectations only became greater and I found myself constantly anxious, and worrying about school.
Last week, watching Simone Biles pull out of the Olympics reminded me of this feeling. Simone Biles: the GOAT (Greatest of All Time). If there was any one person we knew we could depend on to win gold in her event, it was Simone. But that kind of pressure is unbearable. Imagine having to practically carry the Olympics on your back because all of the United States feels as though they can rely on you. However, unlike me and my freshman-year identity crisis, Simone recognized the pressure she was under. She had the bravery and self-reflective skills to be able to realize that the pressure of perfection was too much for her to handle.
Simone Biles has taught me a very important lesson: to be the greatest person of all time, mental health must come first. Instead of getting down on myself for not performing the way I wanted to, I need to take a note from Simone and be kind to myself, taking a break and asking for help when necessary. Taking care of yourself and your mental health is nothing to be ashamed of. After all, if GOAT can do it, so can we!
29. How might the author find her middle school life?
A. Challenging. B. Peaceful. C. Meaningless. D. Satisfying.
30. What may be a reason for the author’s anxiety?
A. Disappointing her parents.
B. Caring about her appearance.
C. Failing to be admitted to college.
D. Being unable to complete her papers.
31. What might Simone Biles be?
A. A professional athlete.
B. An Olympic official.
C. An event organizer.
D. A medal presenter.
32. What did the author learn from Biles?
A. Deal with pressure on our own.
B. Taking care of ourselves matters.
C. Never seek help whatever happens.
D. Winning comes first in all the fields.

Sorry rabbits, but giant tortoises are still winning the race of life by treating it like a marathon and taking each step slow and steady. Recently, the world’s oldest tortoise, Jonathan, has turned 191 years old. This extends his title of the oldest living land animal by another year.
Unofficially, there have been claims of older tortoises, including one believed to have been 255 years old when it died in 2006. Researchers have not been able to pin down exactly what keeps them around for so long, but their slow-motion lifestyle may have something to do with it.
Giant tortoises have very slow metabolisms (新陈代谢), which means they burn energy at a slower rate than smaller and faster animals. Physiologist Max Rubner introduced the rate of living theory. The theory suggested an inverse relationship between metabolism and lifespan, which means that the faster the metabolism, the shorter the life. Scientists have had some issues with the theory over the past century, but it did produce the phrase “‘live fast, die young", and it serves as the basis for more research on the topic.
The link between metabolism and longevity (长寿) is still not understood. Some scientists believe that metabolism is linked to the creation of free radicals (自由基). They are the molecules (分子) that damage cells and that increase as more energy is burned by the body. According to this theory, tortoises live longer because their slow metabolisms bum less energy. which means less harm to the cells in their bodies.
Theories on aging alone don’t fully explain how tortoises live much longer than humans, but their reproductive (繁殖的) life and size may give an explanation. Because of their massive hard shells and their geographic isolation (they only live on a few specific islands), giant tortoises have very few enemies to worry about. This means giant tortoises don’t have to rush into reproduction to keep their species alive.
Each theory has its limitations and unanswered questions, but scientists believe that a combination of biological and evolutionary factors is what keeps giant tortoises alive for so long.
33. What does the underlined word “inverse” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Similar. B. Opposite. C. Clear. D. Unchanging.
34. What can we learn about free radicals?
A. Free radicals can protect cells.
B. Free radicals increase with age.
C. Fewer free radicals lead to a longer lifetime.
D. The slower the metabolism the more free radicals.
35. Why don’t giant tortoises rush to produce their young?
A. They have little worry about extinction.
B. They have a low reproductive ability
C. They live a long time.
D. They usually prefer to be alone.
36. What could be the best title for this article?
A. Live fast, die young. B. The way metabolism works.
C. Jonathan, oldest tortoise. D. Secret to giant tortoises’ longevity.
D
Expecting the worst to avoid feeling bad later is known as “bracing”. It may help them prepare for emotionally challenging situations, particularly in the moments before these situations occur. People brace for the worst while awaiting potentially negative outcomes. Someone might also brace for the worst in anticipation of stressful events like giving a presentation at work.
Some psychological theories suggest that bracing should help. For example, “decision affect theory” proposes that how we feel about a situation is determined partly by comparing what actually happened with what could have happened. Based on this, people should be happy when an event goes beyond their expectations, and disappointed when an event falls behind. Therefore, by anticipating the worst, one can safeguard themselves against future disappointment, as any result is likely to surpass their expectations.
Other psychological theories, nevertheless, undermine the idea that bracing will be helpful. It has been theorized and scientifically established that expectations can powerfully influence reality. There are two key ways that expectations can shape reality.
First, people may behave in ways that fit with their expectations. If you expect to fail an upcoming test or interview, then you might not invest efforts in preparation, which in turn reduces your chances of doing well. Second, people may interpret a situation in line with their expectations. Imagine you believe you are insufficiently qualified for a job you’ve applied for. During the job interview, you’re likely to interpret blank expressions from the interviewer in line with this belief, which could negatively affect your performance. In fact, the interviewer did not want to give anything away.
Drawing together the scientific studies, it seems that expecting the worst is anything but a wise way to prepare for upcoming news or results. It might be more sensible to hold positive expectations than to brace for the worst.
37. What is the second paragraph mainly about?
A. The logic of preparing for the worst.
B. The theory of comparing past and future.
C. The conflict between people’s expectation and reality.
D. The emotions hidden behind anticipating the worst.
38. What does the underlined word “undermine” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Strengthen. B. Propose.
C. Weaken. D. Justify.
39. How can negative expectations probably affect people’s performance in reality?
A. By reducing people’s chances of doing well.
B. By stimulating people’s ambition and motivation.
C. By giving weight to people’s potential of excellence.
D. By causing less preparation and some misinterpretations.
40. Which would the author most likely agree with regarding “bracing for the worst”?
A It fully guarantees people a positive emotional experience.
B. It may bring more drawbacks than benefits in practice.
C. It is a universal solution for handling difficult situations.
D. It has no impact on how people view real-life events.

Studies continue to show how important strong friendships are to our overall health. Here’re the rules you are supposed to know to keep strong and healthy friendships.
____41____ Everyone needs a support network. When you consider yourself the friend of another, you’re implicitly offering to be a part of his or her support network. What’s more, without trust and honesty, there is no authenticity (真实性) to the friendship.
Be all ears to your friends. Too often, we only “half hear” what others are telling us, and have a hard time making space for caring about others’ conditions. ____42____ If we don’t truly know what our friends need or can’t clearly express how we feel or what we need, friendships won’t survive or continue.
Throw away the judgment. ____43____ Good friends are able to realize that everyone is human. Friends don’t have to necessarily “like” or “approve” of their friends’ choices, but good friends will accept their friends’ choices no matter what.
Forgive (原谅) where you can — and seek forgiveness when you make a mess of something. No one promises to bring perfection to a relationship, so being willing to accept and forgive the weaknesses of others makes you more likely to build a lasting friendship. ____44____
Respect your friends and their boundaries. Everyone has a right to set up personal boundaries to feel safe and respected. Some friends may have a difficult time letting people get close to them for fear of being hurt. ____45____ Give them the space they need to feel comfortable, and let the relationship deepen over time.
A. Don’t crowd your friends.
B. Offer them what they need.
C. Support, trust, and honesty are givens.
D. But friendships don’t need to be perfect.
E. True friends don’t judge each other’s choices.
F. However, friendships require attention and care.
G. It’s also important that we’re able to recognize when we make mistakes.

【71题答案】
【答案】Dear Chris,
I’m glad you asked for my advice. If you can’t decide between P.E. and film class, I suggest that you pick film on Friday and do sports with friends on weekends. Film class will improve your listening and cultural knowledge, while Friday sports are often crowded. Doing sports will recharge you after a week of classes and help you sleep better, while films will let you explore Chinese culture. This way you enjoy both without missing anything. That spares you the pain of choosing just one.
Hope you find my advice helpful!
Yours,
Li Hua
