At 17 years old, most are still learning basic driving skills in America. Once the car is parked, the day is packed with school activities and hanging out with friends. But at 17, Maggie Taraska had a distinctive goal in mind: Fly alone across the United States.
Both of Maggie’s parents were retired from the air force, so the urge to fly is in Maggie’s blood. She went to flight school, put in the hours with an instructor and started on her training hours. But on her first takeoff, something didn’t sound right. The plane had lost one of the landing gear wheels. “As soon as I took off, I just heard something was wrong instinctively,” said Maggie.
Her instructor talked to her from the ground while she circled a few times to gather herself. “I was frightened, thinking about all the bad things that could have happened; I was thinking about how my parents were on the ground as I knew they were watching.”
Stress and panic can cause any of us to make careless decisions. It takes mental practice to calm down. “Take a few breaths, focus on the moment and follow the plan. I panicked a bit, but followed my training.”
Maggie was a little shaky as she talked to the tower, but she had a perfect belly landing that skidded on the infield grass. Her father couldn’t be prouder. “By the time I saw Maggie on her approach, it was a better approach than I could have flown,” he said. Cheers erupted in the tower, and Maggie took a deep breath and climbed out of the plane.
Credit does go to the crew for talking to her. Yes, we all need someone to talk us through challenging times, but in the end, it was all Magic at the controls. We could all be forgiven for calling it quits after an experience like that. After all, it was a bit distressing. So walking away would be understandable. But five days later, Maggie was going through her pre-flight safety inspections, checking the wings, especially checking the landing gear.
“It feels amazing,” she said, “It gives an incredible sense of liberation.” At some point in our lives, we will all be in a situation for the first time. It’s scary. But if you face your fears, the whole world opens up to you.
4. What mainly influenced Maggie’s urge to fly alone?
A. Her parents’ background in air force.
B. Her experience of school activities.
C. Her instructor’s encouragements.
D. Her basic driving skills.
5. What did Maggie do when hearing something wrong during takeoff?
A. She landed the plane immediately.
B. She thought of her parents’ expectation.
C. She circled a few times to calm herself down.
D. She continued flying as if nothing had happened.
6. Which words would best describe Maggie’s personality?
A. Proud and intelligent. B. Positive and cautious.
C. Patient and responsible. D. Fearless and determined.
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Failure is the mother of success. B. A good beginning is half done.
C. Fortune favors the brave. D. Practice makes perfect.
C
We take our speech abilities for granted. Most people do not stop to think of how other animals and insects communicate with each other. Ants are amazing creatures that have a tireless work pattern and complex social structure. To achieve this, they must have some ways of communicating with each other. Obviously, ants do not speak as we do, so how do they communicate?
Ants communicate by releasing pheromones (信息素) that function outside of the body to send chemical messages to the ant that receives it and by touching their antennae (触角) to feel and smell each other. The best example that we can see very clearly is that ants find food sources and drop pheromones on their ways. By using their antennae to detect pheromone trails and following a sweeping pattern, they encounter a trail. Once the pheromone trail is found, they follow it with one antenna on either side of the path, ensuring they keep on track. This allows other ants to follow the pheromones. The result of these pheromone paths is long convoys of ants, marching one behind each other to collect food.
The queen ant uses pheromones to signal. As the queen ages, she gives off pheromones that tell the ant colony that she is dying. They begin feeding and preparing a pupa (蛹) to be the new queen. When ants greet each other with their antennae, they can tell if they are friends or foes and what function each ant fulfills in the nest.
Scientists know that this is possible, but they are still trying to identify which pheromones share this information. Ants also give off pheromones that identify the nest they belong to, their social status, and their maturity. The more researchers study ants, the more they discover about their ability to translate information to one another, learn, form collective memories and sound alarms. Ants are truly amazing communicators.
8. How could ants communicate according to the text?
A. By attracting companions via sounds.
B. By sending alarm signals to the queen.
C. By identifying pheromones with antennae.
D. By keeping on the same track.
9. What is the function of the pheromone trail?
A. To spot enemies in the ant colony.
B. To help companions find food sources.
C. To keep the orders of the ant community.
D. To enable ants to communicate with humans.
10. What is the closest in meaning to the underlined word “convoys” in Para 2?
A. Circles. B. Signals. C. Lines. D. Exchanges.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Ants have no collective memories.
B. Ants alarm-sounding ability is unique.
C. Researchers have identified the types of pheromones.
D. More secrets on ants’ communication remain unknown.
D
In the video game Space Invaders Extreme 2, a player has to fire weapons to destroy aliens attacking Earth. These aliens move fast, raining down from the top of the screen and claiming a player’s “life” if they reach the bottom.
A study in Nature suggests that while destroying digital aliens might seem unrelated to distinguishing between words, such action video games may help children at risk for developmental dyslexia—a genetic language disorder that makes processing words difficult — by improving their ability to perceive spoken words and sounds.
In the study, 79 prereading children with family histories of dyslexia took several language tests, including listening for differences in made-up words — a task that can be challenging for dyslexic people. The kids were then split into four groups. One played Space Invaders Extreme 2, a second played a non-action video game, a third attended speech therapy, and a fourth received no intervention. Gamers played four times a week for 45 minutes each over a month and a half, and those in speech therapy attended 45-minute sessions twice weekly over about four months.
By the end of the trial more than 80 percent of the Space Invaders players were significantly better at the word-identification task than before, and they showed greater improvements than any of the other three groups. The researchers aren’t sure why scores on the other language tests did not improve notably — but they say that this finding could be valuable. “If we can target these small cognitive functions before children are older and lose some brain plasticity, then perhaps we can treat aspects of dyslexia before they’ve fully formed,” says Simone Gori, co-author of the study.
Dyslexia often goes untreated in Italy’s overburdened public health and school systems, says Marilu Tempini, a behavioral neurologist at the University of California. She hopes to see larger future studies conducted in other languages as well. “Eyes are an extension of the brain,” she says, “so when we play video games, it’s directly connected to our cognitive function-and there is so much research potential there.”
12. What do we know about Space Invaders Extreme 2?
A. It is regarded as violent. B. It focuses on the intelligence.
C. It requires fast action. D. It contains a VR setting.
13. According to Simone Gori, what is the significance of the finding?
A. It proves that children with dyslexia can be cured.
B. It offers hope that the public health system in Italy will be improved.
C. It suggests that video games can replace the traditional speech therapy.
D. It indicates that action video games can be used for early intervention of dyslexia.
14 What is Marilu Tempini’s attitude towards the study?
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable.
C. Dismissive. D. Conserved.
15. Which of the following might be a suitable title for the text?
A. Hidden Secrets Behind Dyslexia Revealed
B. Action Video Games Advance Word Awareness
C. The Most Effective Coping Strategy for Dyslexia
D. Video Games Designed to Improve Cognitive Function

I got afraid when I was going to join Thompson Rivers University (TRU) here in Canada. The fact was that I was far away from my country with a totally new culture and new people and I became nervous because I had no experience of getting adjusted with a whole new place, language and culture. ____16____ Speaking English fluently and maintaining my confidence when chatting with each person here posed another for me.
Before I landed in Canada, I had known I would face a lot of problems. ____17____ It happened especially when it came to figuring out how to fix it or make the necessary adjustments here. I wasn’t able to communicate with people so easily because the accent here in Canada wasn’t familiar to me. ____18____ That directly contributed to my hesitation in talking with people around me. Besides, the fear of making mistakes was killing my desire to give it another try.
To break through these difficulties, I realized that I had to actively engage with the local environment and the diverse community around me. When I first came to TRU, I met with national and international students, talked to them about our culture, like how our interactions happened, the way we communicated, and the traditions we were keeping. I started to observe people, including how they talked, their expressions, intonation, stress, vocabulary, and the way they used phrases in conversations. I also started to talk with my friends in English. ____19____ I persisted increasingly to gradually adapt to and feel at ease with the new language, culture, tradition and all the aspects that required my adjustments.
____20____ Nothing is impossible to achieve. All you need to do to achieve a goal is hard work, practice and not feeling shy when you’re making a mistake. I am learning a lot by making lots of mistakes. Now mistakes don’t bother me anyway.
A. This was a big challenge for me.
B. However, I was still at a loss sometimes.
C. From all this I have learned a vital lesson.
D But things still went beyond my expectation.

It all started when my dad brought home a very big surprise — which was actually a very little surprise. “Ta-da!” he announced pulling a sheet off a cage, magician-style. “Meet Mr. Nibbles!”
“A hamster(仓鼠)!” I cheered.
“He’s so cute,” said Tex. “Hello, Mr. Nibbles, I already love you so much.” Tex whispered.
Seeing how we reacted, dad smiled, “Well, congratulations, Mr. Nibbles. You have found yourself a new home!”
It took a few weeks for our fuzzy (毛茸茸的) friend to get comfortable. At first he poked (探出) his head out of his cage only to take a sip of water and fill his cheeks with food. But once he got settled in, he was happy and playful. He sometimes slid away from the cage, and even begged for food, making a hissing (嘶嘶声的) sound as if saying thanks. Having Mr. Nibble 's around made our summer much more fun.
Before we knew it, it was time to go back to school. I was excited to see friends I hadn’t seen in a really long time, but, to be honest, I was also nervous about all the new stuff. That’s why I made sure I was extra prepared. My plan was to wake up early, put on my carefully laid-out clothes, eat my carefully chosen breakfast, and place my thought-out lunch in my carefully arranged backpack. Then I’d ride my carefully cleaned bike to school and enter my brand-new classroom. Hopefully, preparing ahead of time could make me feel calmer going into the back-to-school day!
Everything went according to plan — until, well, it didn't My new teacher, Mr. Jax, who seemed very serious, started out by going over the class rules. Then he asked each of us to say a quick something about our summer vacation. Most kids seemed pretty shy after being apart for a while and said only a few words. Soon it would be my turn.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly I heard a familiar hissing sound coming from my backpack.

C 9. B 10. C 11. D

根据文章第二段“The best example that we can see very clearly is that ants find food sources and drop pheromones on their ways. By using their antennae to detect pheromone trails and following a sweeping pattern, they encounter a trail. Once the pheromone trail is found, they follow it with one antenna on either side of the path, ensuring they keep on track. This allows other ants to follow the pheromones. The result of these pheromone paths is long lines of ants, marching one behind each other to collect food.(我们能清晰看到的最佳例子是,蚂蚁找到食物源后,会在沿途留下信息素。
根据下文“marching one behind each other to collect food(一只跟着一只前行觅食。)”

14. What is Marilu Tempini’s attitude towards the study?
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable.
C. Dismissive. D. Conserved.
15. Which of the following might be a suitable title for the text?
A. Hidden Secrets Behind Dyslexia Revealed
B. Action Video Games Advance Word Awareness
C. The Most Effective Coping Strategy for Dyslexia
D. Video Games Designed to Improve Cognitive Function
C 13. D 14. B 15. B

故填first。
故填to name。
故填the。
national unity和the one-China principle之间是并列关系,应用连词and连接。故填and。
故填is。

Dear Chris,
I’m writing to share an exciting experience — I had a cooking class in the school’s kitchen last Thursday!
With the teacher’s help, I made mapo tofu. At first, I was nervous about controlling the heat, but soon I got the hang of it. The tofu turned out soft and spicy, just like my mom’s. My classmates praised it, which made me really proud.
This class taught me that cooking is not only fun but also a great way to learn patience. Do you have any interesting class experiences to share?
Yours,
Li Hua

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Now everybody was looking at me!
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Suddenly I heard a familiar hissing sound coming from my backpack. Was it the sound of my hamster? I unzipped my backpack — and very quickly zipped it back up again. There he was! What if he wasn’t OK? What if I got into trouble when the teacher found out? My heart started beating super fast. This was definitely not how my first day back at school was supposed to go! Just then, Mr Jax asked me, “Arizona, are you all right? Would you like to share?”
Now everybody was looking at me! Taking some low, slow breaths, I began to talk about my summer with Mr. Nibbles and explained what was going on. After hearing me out, Mr. Jax said softly, “Why don’t you introduce Mr. Nibbles to us all?” His words were met with cheers and applause from my classmates. Gingerly, I cupped the little playful creature out of my backpack. All kids gathered around, petting our fuzzy friend, talking and laughing. That’s how my back-to-school day turned out.
