I wasn’t the most popular student in my first year of high school - not at all. In fact, I felt awkward. I didn’t care about fashion, liked reading more than sports, and had trouble talking to boys. Because of this, my first year of high school was hard. I had no close friends. I usually stayed alone and read books a lot. That’s why I was so surprised when Ashley and I became friends the summer before my second year.
Ashley was very different from me. She was outgoing and loved fashion. She listened to bands I never heard of and was good at art. She was popular, and I remembered she had always been like that. These were things I knew nothing about. We had been in the same class before, but we never talked much. I was always nervous around her.
During summer school, we took classes to graduate early. The teacher paired us for a project. At first, Ashley seemed unwilling to work with me. But I think she agreed because none of her cool friends were in the class. We met at the library for the project and hit it off quickly. Ashley did most of the talking. We sat together for the rest of the summer, and after classes ended, we kept hanging out. We went shopping, listened to music, watched movies, and went to the beach. It was everything a great summer with a new friend should be.
24.What is the text mainly about?
A.The author’s lonely first year of high school.
B.How Ashley changed the author’s life.
C.How the author and Ashley became friends.
D.The importance of summer school.
25.Why was Ashley willing to work with the author eventually?
A.She thought the author was a big reader.
B.Her popular friends weren’t in the class.
C.She has no close friends.
D.She loved fashion.
26.What can we learn about the author and Ashley before summer school?
A.They often argued with each other.
B.They were classmates but seldom talked.
C.Ashley admired the author.
D.They were close competitors.
27.What does the phrase “hit it off” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Argued a lot. B.Worked efficiently.
C.Got along well immediately. D.Found many differences.

Scientists have recorded plant species for centuries to help us understand and protect them. But according to new research, many have never actually been photographed (拍照) in their natural environment, and that’s a problem.
An Australian team surveyed 33 important online collections of plant photographs to check the photographic record of Australian plant species. The findings showed that out of 21,077 native Australian plant species, almost 20 percent of them remain without photographs that can prove their identity (身份) details. Thomas Mesaglio, the lead author of the study, said, “It is surprising to see how many plant species have just line drawings, paintings, or even no media at all.”
Being unable to use detailed photos can have real effects. Many plant species that are difficult to tell apart in the wild may die out if scientists can’t properly recognize them with the help of photos. “We thought every plant species had simply been photographed by someone, somewhere, throughout history. But it turns out this isn’t the case,” said Will Cornwell, another author of the study.
Photographs can help with scientists’ work by keeping characteristics (特征) like flower color that can get lost over time. They can also show additional features. But just as some animals catch less interest than others, some plants are facing the same situation. The most well-photographed plant groups are usually some trees that can be noticed more easily. They usually have special characteristics, such as colorful flowers.
Because digital photography is so convenient now, anyone can help make a meaningful difference to science by using the camera in their pocket. By using online tools like iNaturalist, the public can have their pictures identified (识别) by experts and share the information, which will be used in research and protection.
“We’ve recognized nearly 10 percent of those previously unphotographed species thanks to members of the public sharing their photographs online and experts who’ve kindly identified them,” said Mr. Mesaglio. “There could be many more in personal collections just waiting to be shared. People can get much more excited about plants with photographs.”
28.What did the survey find out regarding Australian plant species?
A.A rich source for artistic creation. B.A shortage of supporting photos.
C.A focus on online viewing. D.A sudden fall in numbers.
29.What is stressed (强调) about plant photography in paragraph 3?
A.It is challenging in faraway areas. B.It is mainly done by professionals.
C.It often goes unnoticed by scientists. D.It influences the survival of plant species.
30.What does the author want to show by mentioning some animals in paragraph 4?
A.Colorful wildlife is far more valuable.
B.Some plants are as eye-catching as animals.
C.Plants with common features get little attention.
D.Animal photography receives wider recognition.
31.Which of the following is encouraged by the author?
A.Using digital tools to support plant protection.
B.Taking part in fieldwork to discover new species.
C.Protecting unique plants from being photographed.
D.Sharing valuable plant pictures with local museums.

The Hidden World of Relaxation: How Your Body and Mind Recharge
Have you ever felt completely exhausted after a long day of study, only to find yourself refreshed after a good night’s sleep or a relaxing weekend? This isn’t just a feeling; it’s a complex biological process. Understanding how our bodies and minds relax can help us manage stress and improve our overall well-being.
Relaxation is the body’s natural way of recharging its batteries. When we are stressed, our body produces hormones like adrenaline, which prepares us for “fight or flight”. While useful in short bursts long-term stress can be harmful. True relaxation, however, shifts our body into the “rest and digest” mode. During this state, our heart rate slows, our breathing becomes deeper and more regular, and muscle tension decreases. This process is essential for repairing tissues and strengthening our immune system.
Our brain activity also changes significantly when we relax. Instead of the active, problem-solving beta waves, the brain produces more calming alpha waves. This is often when creativity flourishes. Have you ever had a brilliant idea while taking a walk or shower? That’s your relaxed brain at work! Furthermore, relaxation is crucial for memory consolidation — the process of transferring new learned information from short-term to long-term memory. This is why getting enough sleep and taking breaks are vital for students; it helps solidify the knowledge gained from a day of lessons.
However, modern life, with its constant notifications and busy schedules, can make it challenging to achieve deep relaxation. Simply watching TV or scrolling through social media might feel like relaxing, but these activities often keep the brain stimulated. More effective methods include deep breathing exercises, spending time in nature, listening to calm music, or practicing mindfulness. These activities actively encourage the physiological changes needed for true recovery.
Learning to relax effectively is not a sign of laziness but a skill for sustainable health and productivity. By scheduling regular periods of genuine relaxation, we allow our bodies and minds to recover, ensuring we have the energy and focus to face future challenges.
32.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain the dangers of modern technology.
B.To discuss the biological importance of relaxation and how it works.
C.To compare different methods of studying for students.
D.To argue that sleep is the only effective form of relaxation.
33.What happens to the body during the “rest and digest” mode?
A.The heart rate increases and breathing becomes faster.
B.The body produces more adrenaline for action.
C.The heart rate slows and muscle tension decreases.
D.The brain stops processing information completely.
34.The author mentions “having a brilliant idea while taking a walk” to illustrate that ___________
A.a relaxed brain can be more creative
B.walking is the best form of exercise for students
C.stress is necessary for generating good ideas
D.we should avoid traditional problem-solving methods
35.According to the author, why scrolling through social media might not be truly relaxing?
A.Because it requires a high-speed internet connection.
B.Because it is a waste of time and should be avoided.
C.Because it keeps the brain stimulated instead of calming it down.
D.Because it prevents people from communicating face-to-face.
Healthy, supportive relationships are built on trust. Trust is the belief in someone or something’s ability, strength, truth or reliability. 36 You place your trust in another individual and ask that he/she places his/her trust in you.
When parents and teens trust each other, it’s easier for both parties to discuss sensitive issues. Here are some tips for building trust that teens can use to create supportive relationships.
To establish a trusting relationship with your parents, let them know what you need from them. Sometimes they may not realize they’re doing something that makes you worried about talking to them. You might say, “Mom/Dad, I want to tell you about some things I’m thinking about. 37 Can we figure out a way for me to share things without you reacting right away? I want to be able to talk with you openly.”
38 Parents aren’t mind-readers and many spend a lot of time worrying about their kids. When your parents trust you to stay at home by yourself, spend time with someone significant or use technology like social media to tell them how much that means to you.
Being honest with your parents is the best way to earn their trust. 39 They’ll gain a better understanding of how you’re doing, both when you’re doing great and when you need their help. There will be times when you make a mistake. In those instances, it’s best to be frank with your parents. Lying is a quick way to break someone’s trust. 40
A.That’s part of growing up.
B.In fact, trust is a two-way street.
C.But I worry about how you’ll react.
D.Tell your parents how much their trust matters to you.
E.Know that regaining trust takes time and patience.
F.Telling the truth gives your parents a chance to go into your world.
G.Moreover, it will be even worse when parents find out from someone who isn’t you.

My ten-year-old son Mike plays for the local Boys & Girls Club basketball team. Every Wednesday, he and his teammates run, do skill training, and practice playing defense (防守). Knowing that I used to be a player, he longs to show me his skills each time he hits the court (球场).
His team is a mixed bag of talent. Some kids can move the ball, pass, and shoot better than others. Some are more active and want to shoot every shot. Some kids who are still learning easily give up on plays when they are disappointed by the rules. Mike has a good coach, who values sharing, teamwork, and working together.
At first, I was just a supportive dad cheering from the sidelines. But slowly, I became too focused on his performance, hoping he’d play like the NBA stars I admired. During one game that my wife and I attended, I shouted from the sidelines, telling him when to pass, when to shoot, and how to stand on defense.
But all my instructions only made things worse. He lost all sense of direction and didn’t know what to do. When he made a mistake, he turned to me helplessly; his face was full of confusion and disappointment. It looked like he was about to cry. I saw in his eyes that I was no longer helping — I was hurting. On the way home after the game, Mike hardly spoke to me. His silence felt louder than any words.
That night, I couldn’t sleep. I told my wife that I felt so terrible about my behavior. My expectations had put unnecessary pressure on my boy. With his experienced coach on the court, Mike could have performed really well. My wife helped me calm down and see the situation differently. She also gave me tips on how to do better and how to be his cheerleader without being so hard on him. I was thankful for her kind words.
The next day, I said sorry to Mike and opened an honest conversation with him.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few weeks later, Mike gladly invited me to watch their practice.

M: That’s a good point. Once we’re in our room, we can do that. Okay, let’s have a look around. I could really do with a coffee, so maybe we could find a nice café.
W: Or maybe a nice restaurant. I’m really hungry.
M: In that case, let’s look for a restaurant that offers coffee, too. I would mind a little something to eat, but I’m not as hungry as you.
W: That’s because you had a chocolate bar at home and then a huge breakfast at the airport, followed by that large sandwich on the plate.
M: True. Hey, let’s find one of those nice restaurants where we can sit outside and enjoy the sun.
W: Perfect.

M: Yeah, I will. I’ve just been spending all my time at the office lately. Anyway, let me show you that video I edited on Thursday. It’s on my laptop.
W: Hey, what’s this?
M: That’s my new hard drive. I just ordered it on Wednesday and it was delivered here on Friday. It’s got about ten times as much storage as my computer.

【答案】17.B 18.A 19.C 20.C
W: Did you know that dragons have been popular legends in both Europe and Asia for over 3000 years? There is a mention of a dragon in the Bible, but it is associated with evil and considered to be the devil. On the other hand, in China, the dragon is still a symbol of intelligence and power. But the image of the dragon in the east and west was influenced by hundreds of years of contact between Asia and Europe, and dragons came to have some similarities. It is believed that dragons were first imagined in the ancient Middle East. In fact, there used to be a time when people even believed that they really existed. People used to think that dinosaur bones were dragon bones. It is not clear when people began to think that dragons could breathe fire. But both European and Asian dragons have been painted as having that capability. The Chinese dragon does not have legs or wings like the European dragons. The Russian dragon is often shown as having three heads. Dragons are still quite popular and can be seen in many movies and television programmes.

根据第二段中“The findings showed that out of 21,077 native Australian plant species, almost 20 percent of them remain without photographs that can prove their identity (身份) details. (调查结果显示,在21,077种澳大利亚本土植物中,近20%的植物仍然没有可以证明其身份细节的照片)”可知,调查发现澳大利亚植物物种缺乏用于证明其身份的支持性照片。故选B项。
29.细节理解题。根据第三段中“Being unable to use detailed photos can have real effects. Many plant species that are difficult to tell apart in the wild may die out if scientists can’t properly recognize them with the help of photos. (无法使用细节丰富的照片可能会产生实际影响。许多在野外难以区分的植物物种,如果科学家无法借助照片准确识别它们,可能会灭绝)”可知,第三段强调了植物摄影影响植物物种的生存,因为缺乏照片会导致科学家无法准确识别物种,可能使其灭绝。故选D项。
30.推理判断题。根据第四段中“But just as some animals catch less interest than others, some plants are facing the same situation. The most well-photographed plant groups are usually some trees that can be noticed more easily. They usually have special characteristics, such as colorful flowers. (但就像有些动物不太引人关注一样,有些植物也面临着同样的情况。被拍摄得最多的植物群通常是一些更容易被注意到的树木。它们通常具有特殊的特征,比如色彩艳丽的花朵)”可推知,作者提及动物是为了类比说明具有普通特征的植物很少受到关注,就像有些动物不如其他动物受关注一样,普通植物也难以获得拍摄机会。故选C项。
31.细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中“Because digital photography is so convenient now, anyone can help make a meaningful difference to science by using the camera in their pocket.

此处为固定搭配“be recognized as”,意为“被认为是……”,所以用介词as。故填as。
故填have stressed/have been stressing。
故填which。
故填an。

Dear Editor,
To build us up, our school has organized running exercise during the break.
However, we students have different opinions about it. Many of the students are in favor of this program. They think running is a good way to build them up. Besides, it can help them to relax and relieve the pressures of study. However, other students think differently. They claim that they feel very tired after running, so they have difficulty concentrating on their lessons. In addition, they sweat so heavily after running that it is easy to catch a cold.
I think it’s beneficial for students to take regular physical exercise because they spend most of their time sitting in the classroom. Running is an effective way to keep fit. However, other ways of exercising should be provided for students, too. Do you agree with me?
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

The next day, I said sorry to Mike and opened an honest conversation with him. I admitted that I had put too much pressure on him with my expectations and that I had been more of a judge than a supporter. Surprisingly, he said that he understood I only wanted the best for him. He shared how much he enjoyed having me there, not to correct him, but to support him and see his progress. With this meaningful conversation, Mike’s spirits improved greatly and we understood each other better. And I realized I needed to make changes to be a better father.
A few weeks later, Mike gladly invited me to watch their practice. This time, I decided to deal with it differently. I just encouraged Mike to be more confident, and cheered when he made good plays. With some active practice, he made several baskets successfully and ran to me with a big smile. For the first time, I was part of his world without pushing him — just a proud dad sharing the moment. We’ve become much more connected since the practice. I have learned that the best support is to allow your kids to enjoy sports and progress in their own way.
