Grammar and Vocabulary (20分) Section A Directions: After reading the passage below, fill in the blanks to make the passage coherent and grammatically correct. For the blanks with a given word, fill in each blank with the proper form of the given word; for the other blanks, use one word that best fits each blank. The Australian government controversially shot and killed around 700 koalas from helicopters in Victoria, even though they are not endangered there. A wildfire destroyed large areas of the koalas’ primary food source, the manna gum trees, in their habitat. With little food 21 (leave) and their habitat burned, the Victorian government said it took this extreme action to stop the animals from slowly 22 (suffer) from starvation. This was the first time in Australia that wild animals 23 (kill) from the air not because they were pests, but to ease their suffering. The decision shocked many and made headlines around the world. Animal welfare groups, scientists and the public are asking 24 interfering with (干预) nature in this way is correct or not. Animals 25 (live) without our help for thousands of years. Today, however, we are responsible for many of their challenges. Bushfires and floods, for example, have become more frequent and intense 26   _______ climate change. Still, deciding how to help isn’t easy. In this case, letting those koalas live might have meant slow and painful deaths. But shooting them was a 27 (disturb) and violent step. Relocating the koalas would have been difficult. Mature koalas are territorial and can 28 (stress) by relocation. This can lead to health problems and possible exposure to diseases. As an Australian, I’m aware of all that, but the death of hundreds of koalas still breaks my heart. We cherish our grey furry friends. Nature can be cruel, but when human activity adds to that cruelty, we 29 (not) just turn away. When we act, though, we must do so carefully, with expert advice and respect for life. Intervening in nature is a serious matter. It must be done with compassion, science and a long-term plan. The killing of those koalas was a quick fix. We should be 30 (good) than that. We owe it to our wildlife to at least try to make things right. Section B Directions: Fill in each blank with a proper word chosen from the box. Each word can be used only once. Note that there is one word more than you need. A.adopter    B.alarm    C. annoying    D.controlling    E. economically    F. feature G. frequently    H. normal    I. savings    J. shifted    K. spotted Is the Smart Home a Smart Choice? Depending on your perspective, my Brooklyn apartment is either a technological marvel or a confusing maze of digital assistants and unnecessary remote-control integration. For me, adjusting the living room temperature is as simple as saying, “Hey Siri, set living room to 72 ℉.” To my wife, however, it is a(n) 31 process involving apps and Wi-Fi. I spent around $2,000 on this home technology, 32 everything via a single app or my voice. As I don’t live alone, I’ve also installed conventional wall switches and a universal remote for the TV. This allows family visitors to operate things the “ 33 ” way: dialing a desired temperature on the thermostat (恒温器), flicking the lights on, and pressing the “on” button to watch news. Commercials promise a future of effortless control and entertainment at our fingertips or voice command. Yet, after four years in a smart home, my initial feeling of empowerment has 34 into dependence, mixed with anxiety. My smart thermostat promised 35 by adjusting temperatures only when necessary. However, I have observed no change in my electrical bills since its installation. It even alters temperatures randomly based on a learning algorithm that can’t make sense. Then there are the alarming security camera alerts. One night, while I was working late, my phone buzzed with an alert: “Person 36 in the living room.” I crazily checked the camera with its night vision on, but it revealed nothing; it was a false 37 . Furthermore, while my smoke alarms can activate lights and call emergency services during a fire, their most practical function for me is the ability to turn them off. This is essential, as I enjoy frying food in cast iron, an activity that 38 triggers the alarm — a common experience for any New Yorker cooking a steak. As an early 39 eager to command devices by voice, I’ve realized that connecting every device to the Internet can be frightening. Despite the frustrations and the seeming irreversibility of this trend, a crucial comfort remains: most of these devices still keep their most important 40 — a simple on and off switch. III. Reading Comprehension (45分) Section A Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A. B.C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context Is studying day and night driving you crazy? Well, winter vacation will soon be arriving. However, for some of us, 41 a vacation can be a big headache. Where to go? What to eat and where to spend your evenings? How much will the trip cost? Will I 42 jet lag? If that is the case for you, we suggest you have a staycation. Interested in knowing what a staycation is? Let’s start by 43 what it is. A staycation is basically taking a vacation in your own city. It’s a concept that emerged during the global financial crisis of 2008. While we may be better off now, staycations ended up 44 , with people today taking staycations not only in order to save money, but because they actually enjoy doing so. The main 45 of a staycation is to see more of your own city. The trick to a successful staycation is to act like it is a(n) 46 vacation. You wouldn’t laze around and watch TV in your hotel room in Paris, would you? 47 , get out and explore your own city as if it were Paris. 48 all the popular attractions, go to events you’ve just read about in your city’s newspapers and follow a different itinerary (行程) for each day. The other secret to a successful staycation is to really “be” on vacation. Don’t be tempted to do anything that you would 49 do. Get your camera out and take a walking tour of an area completely 50 to you. Put your smartphone away and don’t let messages crowd your mind at any time. The only thing you should need to use technology for is to help you discover the great attractions that may be close to you during the day, and for 51 the best streets for you to do some shopping in the evening. “It’s hard to give specific 52 , but more and more young people who are living in big cities particularly like staycations,” says Niharika Tandon, manager for Four Seasons Hotel Mumbai. They are taking their 53 in the city they live in. To cater to this crowd, hotels have added 54 like late-night spa treatments and pet-friendly hotel rooms. The idea of a staycation is the same as a holiday — it should make you feel 55 before you have to get back to your normal routine. 41.A.canceling B.making C.planning D.spending 42.A.defeat B.fight C.suffer D.sustain 43.A.deciding B.defending C.defining D.demanding 44.A.acting out B.catching on C.coming in D.living up to 45.A.concern B.course C.problem D.purpose 46.A.actual B.common C.practical D.rough 47.A.Furthermore B.However C.Otherwise D.Therefore 48.A.Bring up B.Check out C.Make up D.Work out 49.A.especially B.normally C.probably D.rarely 50.A.convenient B.familiar C.inaccessible D.unknown 51.A.examining B.finding C.inventing D.occupying 52.A.aims B.awards C.expectations D.numbers 53.A.breaks B.chances C.commands D.positions 54.A.deals B.expenses C.options D.values 55.A.devoted B.exhausted C.surprised D.relaxed Section B Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read. A On a summer in 1871, a young artist sat high upon a cliff in the American West. He was fascinated by the magnificence of the wilderness he saw. In the distance the Yellowstone River came crashing down a huge waterfall into a basin of sky blue. Below him lay enormous valley walls, violently carved out of the cream-yellow stone. To paint these wonders, the thin, strong man had endured a four-day ride on the newly built Northern Pacific Railroad. He was travelling as an artist on a survey team. The work he created as a result of this trip would introduce thousands of Americans to the glorious landscape of their own country — and help to establish Yellowstone as the first national park in the US. While the bearded figure sat gazing at the marvelous views around him, he wondered if he could capture on paper all the glories he saw. Alone with his watercolors and drawing pencils, 34-year-old Thomas Moran began to draw. The artist who did so much for the American West was born into a family of weavers in Bolton, England, in 1837. When Moran was seven, his family moved to Philadelphia, where they worked long hours at the loom (织布机). A sensitive young man, Moran spent his early adulthood improving his art without formal education. Day trips outside the city introduced him to the beauty of sloping hillsides and shining riverbeds, and he translated all these sights into oil paintings that grew more assured as time went by. He sold enough of these early works to keep going. By 1870 Moran was illustrating articles for Scribner’s Monthly magazine. One article, written by explorer Nathaniel Langford, described a mysterious region in the West called Yellowstone as “the place where hell bubbled up.” By reworking drawings made by members of Langford’s journey and using his own imagination, Moran drew a fantastic world of erupting geysers (喷涌的间歇泉) and other splendid views. 56.The description in paragraph 1 is meant to ________. A.reveal the danger of Moran’s trip B.stress the popularity of the Yellowstone C.show how remarkable the scenery is D.introduce Moran’s delicate painting skills 57.What can be learned from the passage about Thomas Moran? A.He discovered the Yellowstone by accident. B.He went to an art school to train as an artist. C.He appealed to the government to set up a national park. D.He drew the geysers before seeing them in person. 58.The word “illustrating” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “________”. A.giving examples to B.supplying pictures for C.explaining the themes of D.writing introductions to 59.What is the best title of the passage? A.The Man Who Gave US Yellowstone B.Thomas Moran and His Masterpieces C.A Unique and Adventurous Trip D.A National Park That Has Grand Views B Animals on the Move Moving to Survive Like the shark, most animals use movement to find food. They also use locomotion to escape enemies, find a mate, and explore new territories. Humans have the added advantage of using their various inventions to move about in just about any kind of environment. However, for other animals movement came about naturally through millions of years of evolution. One of the most successful examples of animal locomotion is that of the shark. Its ability to quickly zero in on its prey has always impressed scientists. Skin Is the Key The biologists discovered that the skin of the shark is the key to the animal’s high efficiency in swimming through the water. The skin contains many fiber (纤维). These fibers can either store or release large amounts of energy depending on whether the fibers are relaxed or pulled tight. As energy is alternately stored and released on both sides of the animal’s body, the tail whips strongly back and forth. This whip-like action propels (推进) the animal through the water like a living bullet. Source of Energy When the shark swims slowly, the pressure on the fibers is relatively low. The fibers are more relaxed, and the shark is able to bend its body at sharp angles. The animal swims this way when looking around for food or just swimming. However, when the shark detects an important food source, some fantastic involuntary changes take place. The pressure inside the animal may increase by 10 times. This pressure change greatly stretches the fibers, enabling much energy to be stored. This energy is then transferred to the tail, and the shark is off. The rest of the story is predictable. Other Animals Less Efficient Not all animals move as efficiently as sharks. Perhaps the greatest loser in locomotion efficiency is the slug (鼻涕虫). It uses so much energy producing the mucus (粘液) and crawling over it that a mouse traveling the same distance uses only one twelfth as much energy. Scientists say that because of the slug’s inefficient use of energy, its lifestyle must be restricted. That is, the animals are forced to confine themselves to small areas for obtaining food and finding proper living conditions. Have humans ever been faced with this kind of problem? 60.What is the main factor for shark’s rapid water movement? A.The skin. B.The tail. C.The muscle. D.The jaw. 61.According to the passage, when will the pressure inside the animal increase dramatically? A.When moving its tail rapidly. B.When finding its prey. C.When staying without any movement. D.When bending its body in swimming. 62.What can be learned about slugs according to the passage? A.They move as efficiently as sharks. B.They can travel as far as mice. C.They only live in restricted areas. D.They use only little energy. C My own experiment with culture shock came to a fruitless end when I returned with homesickness from a year’s study in Italy. I had never heard of culture shock. All I knew was that I was unhappy and wanted to go home. That was twenty years ago, and since then culture shock has become a real field study. It is now understood that any normal person, finding himself or herself for an extended time in a new culture, is in for trouble. The process of “culture shock” is now recognized as so predictable that its four stages have been noticeable. The first is the honeymoon stage, familiar to those of us who love to travel, but never stay in one place long enough to find out what follows. In this stage, the new country and its people seem delightful. Everything is better than home. Everything is so different and charming. Then the bloom comes off the rose. Now the people start to look shallow, selfish and stupid. The different ways of doing things don’t seem interesting any more. You start to feel tired all the time. Culture shock has set in. You feel at sea. The emotional response to culture shock in stage two can be extreme. Confusion, depression and anxiety, and resentment can all enter to varying degrees. You may become physically ill. Little things seem terribly annoying. The happier resolution is to move on to stage three. Adjusting. Rather than itemizing (列举) what’s “wrong” with the natives, you remind yourself that “right” and “wrong” are not meaningful terms in cultural matters. Instead, you try to understand what motivates the natives, perhaps realizing that many of the things you don’t like are related to the things you do like. As time goes on, you should be moving into stage four. Acceptance. At this point, you simply don’t think any more about the specialties of the natives. You accept them as individuals. You have started to feel at home; you know how to do things. You have not rejected your old culture; but the native ways have settled upon you. You feel optimistic about your future here. You have truly arrived. 63.Why do people not suffer from culture shock when they first arrive in a foreign country? A.They love to travel. B.The new country and its people are delightful. C.They don’t stay in one place long enough. D.Everything is so different and charming. 64.What do you understand by the underlined sentence “Then the bloom comes off the rose.”? A.The rose blooms. B.The rose comes up. C.Something good goes away. D.Something good comes about. 65.Which of the following statements will the writer agree with? A.Any normal person facing a new culture will be in trouble. B.Culture shock is now recognized as unpredictable. C.When you reject your old culture, you can accept the new one. D.There is no “right” and “wrong” in terms of cultural matters. 66.The passage is mainly about ______. A.the study of culture shock B.the four stages of culture shock and their features C.how to get rid of culture shock D.the writer’s own experiment with culture shock Section C Directions: Read the passage carefully. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box. Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need. The Beauty of Rereading Returning to a book you’ve read many times can feel like drinks with an old friend. There’s a welcome familiarity — but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship. 67 And that’s what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative. The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our link with the work is based on our present mental register. It’s true, the older I get, the more I feel time has wings. But with reading, it’s all about the present. 68 Each has to pull their own weight. 69 The first, which I take to reading every spring is Ernest Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast. Published in 1964, it’s his classic memoir of 1920s Paris. The language is almost fascinating, an aging writer looking back on an ambitious yet simpler time. Another is Annie Dillard’s Holy the Firm, her poetic 1975 ramble (随笔) about everything and nothing. The third book is Julio Cortazar’s Save Twilight: Selected Poems, because poetry, and because Cortazar. While I tend to buy a lot of books, these three were given to me as gifts, which might add to the meaning I attach to them. But I imagine that, while money is indeed wonderful and necessary, rereading an author’s work is the highest currency a reader can pay them. 70 But remember, it’s you that have to grow and read and reread in order to better understand your friends. A.It’s about the now and what one contributes to the now, because reading is a give and take between author and reader. B.The books on the bestseller list are usually worth rereading. C.But books don’t change, people do. D.Reading extends the understanding of the world around us. E.There are three books I reread annually. F.The best books are the ones that open further as time passes. IV. Summary Writing (10分) Directions: Read the following passage. Summarize the main idea and the main point(s) of the passage in NO MORE THAN 60 WORDS. Use your own words as far as possible. How to Develop Healthy Digital Habits In today’s digital world, teenagers spend increasing amounts of time on screens, which can negatively impact their physical and mental health. Developing healthy digital habits is essential for maintaining balance in life. The first step is to set clear boundaries for screen time. Experts recommend taking regular breaks using the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Turning off notifications during study time helps maintain concentration. Establishing “screen-free” zones, especially in bedrooms, can significantly improve sleep quality. Another important aspect is being mindful of online content. Following educational or inspirational accounts rather than those promoting unrealistic standards can boost mental well-being. Students should also schedule offline activities like sports, reading, or face-to-face socializing to maintain a healthy balance between virtual and real-world interactions. Parents and schools play a crucial role in modeling and teaching digital wellness. Open discussions about responsible technology use, cyberbullying prevention, and critical thinking about online information should be encouraged. Teachers can incorporate digital literacy into their curriculum to help students navigate the online world safely. By carrying out these strategies, teenagers can enjoy technology’s benefits while avoiding its risks. 根据下文“One article, written by explorer Nathaniel Langford, described a mysterious region in the West called Yellowstone as “the place where hell bubbled up.” By reworking drawings made by members of Langford’s journey and using his own imagination, Moran drew a fantastic world of erupting geysers (喷涌的间歇泉) and other splendid views. 通读全文,尤其是第二段中“The work he created as a result of this trip would introduce thousands of Americans to the glorious landscape of their own country — and help to establish Yellowstone as the first national park in the US. 故选A项。 B Animals on the Move Moving to Survive Like the shark, most animals use movement to find food. 根据Skin Is the Key部分中的“The biologists discovered that the skin of the shark is the key to the animal’s high efficiency in swimming through the water. 故选A项。 61. 根据Source of Energy部分中的“However, when the shark detects an important food source, some fantastic involuntary changes take place. The pressure inside the animal may increase by 10 times. 根据第五段中的“Scientists say that because of the slug’s inefficient use of energy, its lifestyle must be restricted. That is, the animals are forced to confine themselves to small areas for obtaining food and finding proper living conditions. A.the study of culture shock B.the four stages of culture shock and their features C.how to get rid of culture shock D.the writer’s own experiment with culture shock 【答案】63.C 64.C 65.D 66.B 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第三段“The first is the honeymoon stage, familiar to those of us who love to travel, but never stay in one place long enough to find out what follows. In this stage, the new country and its people seem delightful. Everything is better than home. 根据第三段“The first is the honeymoon stage, familiar to those of us who love to travel, but never stay in one place long enough to find out what follows. In this stage, the new country and its people seem delightful. Everything is better than home. You feel at sea.(Then the bloom comes off the rose. 你感到迷茫)”可知,一些好的感觉或事物开始逐渐褪去,取而代之的是负面的感受,“Then the bloom comes off the rose.” 根据第六段中“Rather than itemizing (列举) what’s “wrong” with the natives, you remind yourself that “right” and “wrong” are not meaningful terms in cultural matters.(与其列举当地人的“错误”,不如提醒自己,在文化问题上,“对”与“错”是没有意义的)”可知,作者认为在文化问题上没有“对”和“错”之分。故选D。 66. 通读全文,尤其是根据第三段中“The process of “culture shock” is now recognized as so predictable that its four stages have been noticeable.(“文化冲击”的过程如今被认为具有很强的可预测性,其四个阶段的特征十分明显)”以及后文对这四个阶段的描述可知,文章主要介绍了文化冲击的四个阶段及其特征。故选B。 Section C Directions: Read the passage carefully. 67.根据前文“There’s a welcome familiarity — but also sometimes a slight suspicion that time has changed you both, and thus the relationship.(既有令人愉悦的熟悉感,但有时也会略带疑虑:时间是否改变了你们双方,进而改变了这段关系)”,以及后文“And that’s what makes the act of rereading so rich and transformative.(而这正是重读的行为如此丰富且具变革性的原因)”可知,此空需明确“改变的一方”,衔接“时间带来的变化”与“重读的魅力”。C选项“But books don’t change, people do.(但书籍不会变,变的是人)”符合语境。故选C项。 68.根据前文“The beauty of rereading lies in the idea that our link with the work is based on our present mental register. Healthy digital habits formed during school years will serve students well throughout their lives in our increasingly connected world. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】The passage discusses the importance of developing healthy digital habits for teenagers. Parents and schools should promote digital wellness through education and open discussions. These habits help teens enjoy technology safely while maintaining physical and mental health. 【点睛】[高分句型1] The passage discusses the importance of developing healthy digital habits for teenagers. [高分句型2] These habits help teens enjoy technology safely while maintaining physical and mental health. V. Translation (15分) Directions: Translate the following sentences into English, using the words given in the brackets. 72. Students should be encouraged to sign up for elective/optional courses according to their own interests. 表示“鼓励某人做某事”应用固定短语encourage sb. to do sth.,其中encourage表示“鼓励”,句子表达“应该鼓励学生”的建议性观点,应用情态动词should加被动语态的形式,即sb. should be encouraged to do sth.,其中sb. 指“报名选修课”译为to sign up for elective/optional courses,其中sign up for… “按照自己的兴趣”可译为according to their own interests,作方式状语,其中according to为固定搭配,意为“根据,按照”。 Students should be encouraged to sign up for elective/optional courses according to their own interests. 73. Air-conditioned study rooms are available to all students during exam week. Air-conditioned study rooms are available to all students during exam week. 74. When the students were undergoing the military training in the hot sun, the head teacher was always in the company of them./When the students are undergoing the military training in the hot sun, the head teacher is always in the company of them. “学生们”翻译成the students(对应的be动词用were),“军训”翻译成“were undergoing the military training”,“在烈日下”是介词短语作地点状语放在该部分的结尾,用“in the hot sun”表示。 “一直”用always表示,“陪伴他们”用介词短语in the company of them表示,与题干要求一致。 When the students were undergoing the military training in the hot sun, the head teacher was always in the company of them.或When the students are undergoing the military training in the hot sun, the head teacher is always in the company of them. 75. The annual festival of the town is alive with joyous laughter of the families, showing the rich culture and tradition of the community. “这个小镇的年度节日”译为the annual festival of the town,作主语;“充满”用所给提示词alive的固定短语be alive with作谓语,句子描述一般情况,用一般现在时,主语为单数,be动词用is;“家庭的欢笑”译为joyous laughter of the families,作宾语。“展示了该社区丰富的文化和传统”可用非谓语动词短语去表达,“展示”与主语the annual festival之间是主动关系,用现在分词showing作伴随状语;“该社区丰富的文化和传统”译为the rich culture and tradition of the community,作showing的宾语。故整句话可译为:The annual festival of the town is alive with joyous laughter of the families, showing the rich culture and tradition of the community. VI. Guided Writing (25分) Direction: Write an English composition in 120-150 words according to the instructions given below in Chinese. 76. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear Xiaoming,     How have you been lately? I’ve been in high school for almost a month now! The campus is much bigger than our junior school — there are three separate buildings for classes, a huge gym, and even a small garden where I sometimes eat lunch. The biggest difference is the study rhythm. Last week, my math teacher finished two chapters in one class.     I’ll give you small tips in high school. First, always take detailed notes. Second, don’t wait until you’re confused to ask for help. Also, try joining a club! I joined the book club, where I’ve already made two new friends. I still miss our lunch breaks together.     I’m looking forward to hearing from you! I still miss our lunch breaks together. I still miss our lunch breaks together, when we were talking and laughing. 1】I joined the book club, where I’ve already made two new friends.(运用了where引导的非限制性定语从句) 【高分句型2】Second, don’t wait until you’re confused to ask for help.(运用了until的时间状语从句) I. Listening Comprehension Section A Directions: In Section A, you will hear ten short conversations between two speakers. At the end of each conversation, a question will be asked about what was said. The conversations and the questions will be spoken only once. After you hear a conversation and the question about it, read the four possible answers on your paper, and decide which one is the best answer to the question you have heard. 1. W: Weren’t you nervous when the professor called on you in class? M: I’d say I was shaking all over. Q: How did the man feel when he was called on? 2. W: Bill, have you finished this work? M: No, I can’t do this without a calculator. Q: What does Bill mean? 3. M: I’m having trouble fitting into my jeans. Looks like I’ll have to get some new ones. W: Oh, maybe you should just cut down on what you eat. Q: What does the woman imply the man should do? 4. M: Let me see. I’ve printed my name, date of birth and address. Anything else? W: No, that’s all right. We’ll fill in the rest of it if you just sign your name at the bottom. Q: What has the man been doing? 5. W: Have you finished reading my research report? I put it on your desk last week. M: Yes, but you have to revise some parts of it, if you want to get it published. Q: What does the man suggest that the woman should do? 6. W: Hey, Brian. Wanna meet us for coffee in a little while? M: Hmm. I would if I weren’t so far behind in this reading I’m doing for history. Q: What will the man probably do? 7. M: Would it be better to buy a monthly meal ticket, or pay for each meal separately? W: What difference does it make, since the price per meal is the same either way? Q: What does the woman mean? 8. M: Did you watch that comedy special on TV last night? I don’t think I ever laughed so hard. W: Don’t even talk to me about it. The only night I really wanted to watch something and we had a power failure in my building. Q: What does the woman mean? 9. W: I hope you like the novel I lent you. I wasn’t sure whether it was the kind of book you would be interested in. M: You know, I had the same doubt at first. But once I started, I simply couldn’t put it down. Q: What does the man mean? 10. W: How are their talks going on? Have they reached any agreement? M: They only seemed to have agreed to set another date for further talks. Q: What can we infer from the conversation? Section B Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages and one longer conversation, and you will be asked several questions on each of the passages and the conversation. The passages and the conversation will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard. Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage. What’s your idea of a good time? What about dancing in a rainy field with one hundred and fifty thousand other people while a famous rock band plays on a stage so far away that the performers look like ants? It may sound strange but that is what many hundreds of thousands of young people in the UK do every summer. Why? Because summer is the time for outdoor music festivals. Held on a farm, the Glastonbury Festival is the most well-known and popular festival in the UK. It began in 1970 and the first festival was attended by one thousand five hundred people each paying an admission price of 1 pound — the ticket included free milk from the farm. Since then the Glastonbury Festival has gone from strength to strength — in 2004 one hundred and fifty thousand fans attended, paying 112 pound each for a ticket to the three-day event. Tickets for the event sold out within three hours. Performers included superstars as well as new talent. Although many summer festivals are run on a profit-making basis, Glastonbury is a charity event, donating millions of pounds to local and international charities. (Now listen again please.) Questions: 11. What do thousands of young people in the UK do every summer according to the passage? 12. Where is the Glastonbury Festival held every year? 13. Which of the statements is true about The Glastonbury Festival according to the passage? Questions 14 through16 are based on the following passage. According to a new report from the United Nations refugee agency, 3.7 million children under the U.N. agency’s care are unable to attend school. The situation gets worse as the children get older. The percentage drops from 50 percent for young children to 22 percent at secondary school age. U.N. information also shows that only one percent of refugees attend a university, compared to 34 percent of the world’s population. As refugee children grow, their chances for education severely decrease. The issue of providing refugees with an education is more difficult because of the expanding population and a lack of necessary financing. According to the U.N. report, the population of school-age children grew by 30 percent in 2014. That number requires an extra 20,000 teachers. Many host nations already struggle to provide simple, but necessary services for refugees. But now, they must also find a place to hold classes and a way to purchase additional school supplies. The report also discusses the helpful effects of education, saying it helps children avoid child labor and membership in armed groups. It also said that not providing schooling only extends conflict and leads to more people being homeless. (Now listen again please.) Questions: 14. Healthy digital habits formed during school years will serve students well throughout their lives in our increasingly connected world. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ V.
