American mountaineer Jim Morrison made history this week when he put on his skis and carefully
moved his way down one of Mount Qomolangma's most dangerous mountain sides. He is the first person
to ski the Hornbein Couloir,a high, narrow gully (on the mountain's North Face.
The groundbreaking adventure marked the completion of years of planning and training.Morrison
had attempted (to ski the Hornbein Couloir twice before-once in 2023 and again in 2024-but
were unsuccessful.
This year,Morrison spent more than six weeks on Mount Qomolangma, getting used to the
mountain and waiting for a suitable weather window. There were 11 other mountaineers with him.
Around 6 a.m.on October 15,Morrison and his teammates began their climb. They reached the top at
12:45 p.m.After taking a few photos, most of the team began carefully climbing back.Meanwhile,
Morrison got ready and started skiing.

The trip took him four hours and five minutes. At one point,he reached a point that was
completely devoid of snow and ice,so he had to take off his skis and lower himself for about 650 feet.
He had a short rest at Camp Three, and then kept going. When Morrison finally reached Camp One,
he was in tears."Id attempted so much and faced so much danger;but I was alive,"he says.
Mountaineers have skied other routes (on Mount Qomolangma, but never the Hornbein
Couloir.Since it's on the mountain's north side, the Hornbein Couloir is often shaded from the sun.As
a result,it remains covered in snow and ice well into the fall.

In Europe, the Netherlands is known for dikes (that hold back the sea.Without dikes,
this nation's low-lying peatland (would be underwater. These areas'weren't always below sea
level.Around the year 900,the peatland"was about 2 meters above sea level;"says Wils,a scientist
at Utrecht University.Peatland was too wet to make good farmland. So the Dutch began to dry them.
That's when their land sinking()started,Wils saye.Today, the Dutch use their peatlands to
raise cows. But they must first remove extra water.Otherwise, this land is too wet to support the cows.

So the land continues to sink. The Dutch peatlands now lie 2 meters below sea level-a drop.of 4
meters in most areas.
Wils is studying new ways to.reduce sinking while supporting the land and people here.'One
method is called wet farming.That's.a ferm for "growing plants in wet environments,"Wils explains..
Adding water back to the land makes the peat lighter and softer. It also allows new peat to form, which
raises the height of the land.
Of course, not all news is good about this wet farming.Flooded fields can give off methane
(CH).This is a strong greenhouse gas that is much worse for the climate than carbon.dioxide (CO2).
Flooded rice fields commonly give off methane. So Wils is studying ways to cut their release of this gas.
He doesn't want a fix for sinking that worsens climate change.
Wet farming isn't just a choice for the Netherlands. It's also used in Germany,Switzerland and the
United States.Peatlands can not only stop flooding, but also provide natural beauty for people to
enjoy."It makes sense to develop a landscape that supports the cities and provides relaxation,"Wils
says."These are actually very easy to combine.
28.What might be the reason for the Netherland's peatland sinking?
A.The building of dikes.
B.The rise of sea levels.
C.The removal of its water.
D.The weight of the cows.

A.Effects of wet farming.
B.Development of peatland.
C.Causes of land sinking.
D.Formation of greenhouse gases.
30.What is Wils'attitude toward the future of wet farming?
A.Uncaring.
B.Doubtful.
C.Worried.
D.Hopeful.
31.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The Birth of Wet Farming
B.The Fix for Sinking Land

It seems the fish were always a smart lot.Only, humans took some time to realise the fact. Some

that they use smell to mark out land, the ientis feel And-so,when they got a very strong mell of
outsiders,they feel threatened(威胁).
How did the scientists discover this? They brought up 44 salmon from two different families and
kept them in several water tanks (All the water tanks had members of both families. In some
tanks, water was let in and let out.In other tanks they kept using the same water. When that
happened, the fish smells also got stronger. For water gathers more and more of the smell with time.
The results were very interesting. In the tanks where water was let in and let out,the fish did not
get very strong smells of family or outsiders. But in the tanks where the same water was used again and
again, the fish smells were much stronger. The salmon in these tanks could easily tell apart the family
members from outsiders. They got unpleasant and then attacked and bit the latter.
Scientists feel this discovery will help people who raise wild fisheries. Now they know that if they
put salmon belonging to the same family in fast--flowing(流a动的)water,they will not develop very
strong connections. But if they put them in pools they will grow together and reproduce, leading to
increased production.
32.What do scientists in Glasgow University discover about salmon fish?
A.They attack outsiders by their smell.
B.They can recognize family members.
C.They grow better in flowing water.
D.They use smells to find food.
33.How was the experiment carried out?
A.By comparing different types of fish
B.By training fish to recognize smells.
C.By using different water conditions.
D.By observing fish in flowing water.
34.What do scientists suggest salmon farmers do?
A.Mix different families in pools
B.Control water flow in raising.
C.Change the food for salmon.
D.Remove the salmon's smell.

A new study published on Aug.20th in the journal iScience shows that far fewer Americans are
reading for'pleasure than 20 years ago.Researchers from the University of Florida and University
College London surveyed more than 236,000 people between 2003 and 2023.They found that the share
of Americans who read for fun on a given day dropped from 28 percent in 2004 to 16 pereent in 2023.
According to Jill Sonke,a co-author of the study, this is not just a small drop-it's an ongoing
decline, calling the results"deeply alarming".She explained that reading for pleasure has always been
a simple and effective activity to spark (creativity and improve your overall well-being.
However, the decline was not equal for everyone. The researchers found bigger drops among
African Americans, people in the countryside and those with lower ineome or education.Women still
read more than men,but rates (fell for both groups."The people who could get the most for
their health are actually getting the least, said co-author Daisy Fancourt, aceording to The Guardian.
Why is this happening? There are different reasons.Sonke pointed to digital culture, economic
worries and little free time.In an NPR interview on Feb.20th,hosts Alisa Chang and Brittany Luse
explored the topic further.Luse said she had spoken with writer Elaine Castillo, who said that social
media companies have taken.our attention, pushing people toward screening and social media instead of
books.Luse also shared comments from Abdullah Shihipar,a researcher at Brown University, who
pointed to studies showing that reading on.screens leads to weaker thinking and understanding.
Others point out differences in different areas..Kate Laughlin,an executive.director of the
Association for Rural and Small Libraries, told the Los Angeles Times that when you say "reading for
pleasure",you mean that reading is fun.If someone struggles with the act of reading and understanding
the words, that's not fun;that feels like work.
36.What is the main finding of the new study?
A.Economic worries limit free time.
B.Social media replace reading habits.
C.Pleasure reading has declined greatly.
D.Screen reading weakens deeper thinking.
37.What does Jill Sonke think of the new finding?
A.It is worrying.
B.It is acceptable.
C.It is no surprise.
D.It won't last long.
38.Which group saw a more obvious drop in reading?
