A
Communication is more than just words. In fact, studies show that when meeting a stranger, only 7% of the impression we make comes from our actual words. Our tone of voice contributes 38%, and a huge 55% comes from body language — the unspoken signals we send through gestures, postures, and facial expressions. This silent language often reveals our true feelings, even when our words say something different.
Take hand gestures as an example. A salesman might notice a customer resting their hand on their chin during a presentation. This gesture usually signals disinterest, telling the salesman that the customer is not engaged. On the other hand, open palms are often a sign of honesty and openness across many cultures.
Eye contact is another powerful part of body language. When someone looks at you with dilated pupils (瞳孔), it often means they are interested in what you’re saying. But if their pupils shrink (缩小) and their gaze feels sharp, they might be feeling unfriendly or challenging you. However, the rules change with culture: in some Asian countries, avoiding direct eye contact shows respect, while in Western cultures, it can seem rude or untrustworthy.
Facial expressions, especially smiles, are also key. A genuine smile involves not just the mouth but also the eyes, creating “crow’s feet” around them. Fake (虚伪) smiles, by contrast, only use the mouth muscles. But even smiles have cultural differences. In Japan, a smile might hide embarrassment, not just happiness.
Experts suggest a technique called “mirroring” to build connection. This means gently copying the other person’s body language — like leaning forward if they do, or using similar hand gestures. The key is to do it naturally; forced mirroring can feel insincere.
Body language is a skill we can learn. By understanding these silent signals, we can communicate more effectively and build better relationships with others.
21.What can we infer from the first paragraph about communication?
A. Words are the most important part of communication.
B. Tone of voice matters more than body language.
C. Unspoken signals play a key role in communication.
D. Strangers rely only on body language to judge others.
22. What does a hand-to-chin gesture usually indicate?

23. The underlined word “dilated” in Paragraph 3 probably means ________.
A. become smaller B. stay the same C. become larger D. change color
24. Which of the following is a sign of a genuine smile?
A. It only uses mouth muscles. B. It creates lines around the eyes.
C. It lasts for less than one second. D. It is followed by a head nod.
25. What is the author’s attitude towards learning body language?
A. Positive B. Negative C. Doubtful D. Uninterested

Central Park, located in the heart of Manhattan, New York City, is an urban park spanning 843 acres. It is the most visited urban park in the United States, with about 42 million visitors annually. Designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux, the park was first opened in 1859 and has since become a symbol of natural beauty and recreational space amidst the city’s skyscrapers.
The creation of Central Park was a massive engineering feat. The landscape had to be completely transformed, as the area was mostly swamps and rocky terrain. Workers moved nearly 5 million cubic yards of soil and planted over 270,000 trees and shrubs to create the peaceful landscapes we see today.
The park offers a wide range of activities for both locals and tourists. People can be seen jogging, cycling, or simply strolling along its many paths. Popular attractions include the Bethesda Terrace and Fountain, the Strawberry Fields memorial dedicated to John Lennon, and the Central Park Zoo. In the winter, visitors can go ice-skating on Wollman Rink, while in the summer, they can enjoy boating on the Central Park Lake.
More than just a recreational area, Central Park serves as a vital “green lung” for the city, helping to improve air quality and provide a habitat for various species of birds and wildlife. It is a place where people can escape the fast pace of city life without ever leaving Manhattan.

Finding low-cost sustainable (可持续的) building materials is important for the environment and in providing access to affordable housing. Researchers have created a composite (复合的) building material by replacing sand in building materials with a common, non-degradable (不可降解的) waste product: used disposable diapers (一次性尿布).
Driven by a desire to solve Indonesia’s significant population growth and demand for low-cost housing, researchers looked for a way of maintaining the benefits of building materials but making it more environmentally friendly and cheaper to produce. Building material samples containing different proportions (比例) of disposable diaper waste were tested. Then the researchers calculated the maximum (最多的) amount of sand that could be replaced with diaper waste, finding that up to 8% of the sand could be replaced to safely construct a house with 36 square meters. 10% of the sand could be replaced in a three-story house and 27% in a single- story house. In terms of the materials used to create partition walls (隔断墙), the researchers said they could replace up to 40% of sand.
“This research has concluded that adding used diapers to building materials does not significantly weaken its strength,” the team stated. “It proves using diapers to create composite materials is workable, particularly concerning the development of environmentally friendly and cost-effective materials.”
Indonesia is ranked sixth globally for disposable diaper usage. Many used diapers are thrown away in the country’s rivers and waterways, causing pollution. In 2019, the total waste in Indonesia was 29. 21 million tons. This figure rose to 32. 76 million tons in 2020.
However, the researchers know the current limitations of using waste diapers as a construction material. For one thing, it would require engagement with waste treatment facilities to collect used diapers from households and deal with them. Secondly, machines that cut up the used diapers would be needed on a large scale.
Nonetheless, the research highlights the potential for using non-degradable waste, addressing sustainability issues and providing low-cost housing.
31. Which is an advantage of replacing sand with used disposable diapers?
A. Lowering carbon footprint. B. Speeding up the construction of housing.
C. Increasing the weight of building materials. D. Improving the quality of building materials.
32. How does the author show the possibility of using diaper waste to replace sand?
A. By listing data. B. By giving examples.
C. By comparing opinions. D. By quoting research findings.
33. According to paragraph 3, which word can best describe the research of using diapers to create composite materials ?
A. Enormous. B. Conservative(保守的). C. Practical. D. vital.
34. What is the author’s purpose of writing paragraph 4?
A. To introduce a topic. B. To attract the readers.
C. To draw a conclusion. D. To provide background information.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Building Materials Are in Great Demand
B. Indonesia’s Awareness of Environmental Protection
C. A Further Study on Materials of Disposable Diapers
D. Waste Disposable Diapers Lay the Foundation for Future Homes

Online shopping often involves endless options and dizzying discounts. A single search for running shoes can produce hundreds of results across multiple platforms. 36 What if there is a tool capable of hunting for the best prices and making sure your purchases arrive on time?
The innovation in artificial intelligence (AI) is AI agents. They are capable of autonomous reasoning and multistep problem-solving. 37 Imagine this: You remind AI to find a winter coat under $200 that’s highly rated and will arrive by Sunday. In seconds, it scans websites, compares prices, checks reviews, confirms availability and places the order, and you can go about your day.
Unlike traditional recommendation engines, AI agents learn your preferences and handle tasks autonomously. The agents are built with machine learning and natural language processing. They can learn from their interactions with users and become smarter. Looking ahead, AI agents are likely to not only master personal shopping needs but also negotiate directly with corporate AI systems. 38
Consumers today focus on value, looking for deals and comparing prices across platforms.
39 But can AI truly learn your preferences? A recent study using the GPT-4omodel achieved 85% accuracy in copying the thoughts and behaviors of over 1,000 people after they interacted with the AI for just two hours, which is really a breakthrough finding.
40 AI systems require extensive access to personal data, shopping history and financial information. This level of access increases the risk of misuse and unauthorized sharing.
A. They can make purchases without being instructed.
B. However, there’s also a risk of being addicted to AI agents.
C. This results in tired eyes and decision-making challenges.
D. They not only suggest what you might like, but also act on your behalf.
E. Having an assistant perform these tasks could be are remarkable time saver.

Dear Ryon,
I hope this email finds you well. I have some thoughts on using AI for grading our English essays.
I believe it’s a promising approach that can provide us with more timely feedback. AI can analyse various aspects of our compositions, such as grammar and structure, which can help us correct our mistakes more effectively.
However, I also think it would be beneficial if you could provide some personalized feedback, especially on the content and creativity of our essays. These are areas where AI might not be as reliable.
Thank you for considering our opinions.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
Dear Ryon,
I hope this email finds you well. I have some thoughts on using AI for grading our English essays.
While AI offers faster feedback, I am concerned about the accuracy and reliability of AI in understanding the details of our writing. AI might miss our humorous expressions or the creativity in our essays, leading to incorrect evaluation.
To address these concerns, I suggest only using AI as a supplementary tool. It can provide initial feedback on grammar, spelling and basic structure, while you can review the content and overall quality. This combined approach would ensure a more fair assessment.
Thank you for considering my opinions
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
One day ,a small brown mouse accidentally ran over a sleeping lion’s paw. The lion woke up. It was so angry that it roared loudly, and grabbed the mouse with its big claws. The mouse trembled and said, “Please let me go! I will help you someday.” The lion laughed at the tiny mouse—how could such a small animal help him? But he felt kind, so he opened his claws and let the mouse run away. The mouse turned back and said, “Thank you! I won’t forget this.”
The next week, the lion stepped into a hunter’s net. He struggled and roared, but the net was too strong. No other animals could help him, and he felt sad and hopeless. Suddenly, the small mouse appeared. It said, “Don’t worry! I’m here to help.” The mouse bit the net with its sharp teeth, little by little. Soon, the lion was free. The lion smiled and said, “Thank you—You do help me as you said before!” Even small kindnesses matter.(Kindness, no matter how small, always pays off.)
22. 答案:B 解析:由文章第二段“A salesman might notice a customer resting their hand on their chin during a presentation. This gesture usually signals disinterest”可知,手放在下巴上的姿势通常表示不感兴趣,答案为 B。
23. 答案:C 解析:根据第三段“When someone looks at you with dilated pupils, it often means they are interested in what you’re saying. But if their pupils shrink and their gaze feels sharp, they might be feeling hostile or challenging you”可知,dilated pupils 与 pupils shrink 意思相反,shrink 是“缩小”的意思,所以dilated应是“扩大”的意思,答案选 C。
24. 答案:B 解析:从文章第四段“A genuine smile involves not just the mouth but also the eyes, creating “crow’s feet” around them”可知,真正的微笑不仅涉及嘴巴,还涉及眼睛,会在眼睛周围形成“鱼尾纹”,所以答案是B。
25. 答案:A 解析:根据文章最后一段“Body language is a skill we can learn. By understanding these silent signals, we can communicate more effectively and build better relationships with others”可知,作者认为肢体语言是一种可以学习的技能,理解它能让我们更有效地沟通并建立更好的人际关系,由此可推断作者对学习肢体语言持积极态度,答案选 A。
26. 答案:A.
27. 答案:B. Because the original landscape was challenging and had to be completely changed.
29. 答案:C. helps to purify the air in the city.
“green lung(绿色肺部)”是一个比喻。
30. 答案:B. It provides a natural retreat for people within the urban environment.
根据第二段“Driven by a desire to solve Indonesia’s significant population growth and demand for low-cost housing, researchers looked for a way of maintaining the benefits of building materials but making it more environmentally friendly and cheaper to produce.(由于希望解决印度尼西亚人口的显著增长和对低成本住房的需求,研究人员寻找一种既能保持建筑材料的优点,又能使其更环保、生产成本更低的方法)”可知,用用过的纸尿裤代替沙子更环保,即其好处是可以降低碳足迹。故选A。
32. A 作者大量使用了具体的统计数据和研究发现,例如:“up to 8%”,“10% of the sand”,“27% in a
single-story house”,以及“up to 40% of sand”。
根据第四段“Indonesia is ranked sixth globally for disposable diaper usage. Many used diapers are thrown away in the country’s rivers and waterways, causing pollution. In 2019, the total waste in Indonesia was 21 million tons. This figure rose to 32.76 million tons in 2020.(印尼的一次性纸尿裤使用率在全球排名第六。许多用过的尿布被丢弃在河流和水道中,造成污染。2019年,印度尼西亚的废物总量为29。2100万吨。这个数字上升到32。到2020年将达到7600万吨)”可推知,作者写第4段的目的是提供背景信息。故选D。
35. D 主旨大意题。根据第一段“Finding low-cost sustainable building materials is important for the environment and in providing access to affordable housing. Researchers have created a composite (复合的) building material by replacing sand in building materials with a common, non-degradable (不可降解的) waste product: used disposable diapers (一次性尿布).

Text 10
W: Every year, on the last Sunday in August, our town stages a fair. Local people sell their homemade foods, all of which are judged later in the day to determine the best of each. The idea is to sell as much as possible to collect money for local schools. Later, the picnic starts, and people eat with the live music, usually from local bands or folk singers. The high point is the dog show. People bring their dogs from all over the town and enter them in different groups. There are games going on as well. For example, people can try their luck at the toy stand, where they can test their skill at hitting toys with wooden balls. If they manage to knock a toy off the stand, they are given the toy. Another very popular stand is where the wool ball throwing takes place. This attracts crowds of school children, especially if a teacher happens to be their goal. This annual fair brings the whole community together as one for a day. Many local schools benefit from this event and different schools are chosen each year so that every school can receive money from the occasion.
