About the tour
Amsterdam is famous for its biking culture and art scene. During this fun three-hour bike tour, which covers 12 km (8 miles), you’ll experience the attractions in a relaxed group setting, with a few extra surprises along the way. Once you’ve been fitted out with a traditional Dutch bike, we will bike across to the Western part of the city exploring the 17th Century harbour area of Prinseneiland and the working class neighbourhood of Jordaan.
We will take a short ferry (轮渡) ride across the IJ to see some of the up-and-coming locations of the former shipyards of Amsterdam North. Here you will see some of the industrial buildings. These areas are also well-known for their impressive street art. I’m making dinner in the kitchen when my 2-year-old shouts for more food. Then, I hear loud crying. My middle son has hit my oldest, and now both are calling for me in tears.
“What happened now?” I shout in a loud voice. “Come on, guys! I’m trying to cook dinner. Why can’t we just play nicely?”
I want to stay calm, but fail. I’m burning to shout at everyone for everything. Then, guilt (愧疚) hits me. They’re just kids. I ask them to talk and say sorry.
This was my daily life. Small things made me so angry. I shouted at my kids for normal mistakes. I knew it was wrong, but I didn’t know how to stop.
Luckily enough, my mum had told me about her recent experience of seeing a therapist (心理咨询师) to work through bad memories from her childhood and how she felt freer and better than she had ever been. I signed up to see the therapist. He helped me process my painful memories. The therapy showed me that my anger came from my past. When my kids misbehaved, I wasn’t just reacting to them — I was reacting to old wounds.
My therapist told me that I had to learn to notice when something in my body changed, like a pause in my breath, my hands shaking in the air. These signs warned me that I was about to lose control. I learned ways to stay calm, like rocking my feet against the floor or taking a deep breath.
Over time I shout less. My kids laugh more. They’re more at ease and less scared that I’m going to go off on them. They seem more confident, too, and able to express their feelings.
I’m still learning. And that’s what parenthood is all about: improving over time and doing the best we can with what we’ve got.
4. How did the author react at first when hearing her kids crying before?
A. She felt a sense of guilt. B. She got angry and shouted.
C. She punished her oldest kid. D. She managed to stay calm.
5. Why did the author sign up to see the therapist?
A. Her kids asked her to follow the advice. B. She could talk to her mother in person.
C. She badly needed a job to feed a family. D. Her mother benefited from the therapy.
6. What does the author think of the therapy?
A. Creative. B. Workable. C. Expensive. D. Misleading.
7. What message does the author want to deliver in the last paragraph?
A. Parents must be strict with their children.
B. Teaching kids to act well is parents’ calling.
C. Parenthood is a journey of learning and improving.
D. Cooking meals is the most important task for parents.

If you’ve ever played on a sports team or been to gym class, you probably know the practice. First, you do some warm-ups. Then you stretch (拉伸). Exercises and activities follow. At the end of the exercise, you do more stretches.
For years coaches and gym teachers have believed that stretching helps athletes perform better, and suffer fewer injuries. From the health club to the football field, everywhere you look, people stretch.
Now research suggests that stretching may not do your body as much good as people thought. After reviewing more than 350 scientific studies, researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) found that stretching may not cut the chance of injury.
“There is not enough evidence (证据) to show that stretching is effective,” says Stephen Thacker, director of the CDC’s epidemiology program in Atlanta, Ga. “Certain athletes stretch all the time, but they’re the ones who are more likely to get hurt.” Thacker points to professional baseball players as an example. They all do stretches before a game. Yet baseball players have one of the highest rates of injury in any sport.
To understand why stretching may be a bad idea, it helps to know how muscles (肌肉) work. It all starts with orders from the brain. Special cells called neurons carry electrical messages from the brain through the nervous system to the muscles you want to activate. As soon as the messages get to their targets, the muscles react. When you stretch, you lengthen muscle fibers. It then takes longer for messages from the brain to travel through them.
Stretching before you exercise is particularly risky, experts say. Instead of stretching before an activity, they recommend warming up by starting slowly to get blood and oxygen flowing to your muscles.
8. What is the common belief about stretching among coaches and gym teachers?
A. It improves performance. B. It should be avoided in matches.
C. It is only useful for athletes. D. It may increase the risk of injuries.
9. What does Thacker want to explain by mentioning professional baseball players?
A. The downside of stretching. B. The purpose of the CDC’s study.
C. The value of the group game. D. The necessity of doing warm-ups.
10. What do experts recommend for warming up before exercise?
A. Focusing on your thoughts. B. Stretching as much as possible.
C. Following the coach’s order. D. Starting with slow movements.
11. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. How Can We Pick an Activity? B. Is Warming up Necessary for Us?
C. Why Do Athletes Do Stretches? D. Does Stretching Help Workouts?
D
Since William Schnider got his first cellphone in sixth grade, it has become a big part of his life. During the day, he keeps it in his right pocket, and at night, it’s within arm’s reach. He doesn’t often make calls; instead, he chats on social media and sends texts.
So when the 17-year-old senior at Van Nuys High School heard that cellphones would be banned (禁止) in L. A. public schools, he doubted this decision. “I don’t see how it will work or if it’s fair. Is this really needed?” he asked.
However, after the astonishment wore off, some teens began to realize that they might be addicted to social media and phones. They wondered if too much screen time and worry about getting “likes” were harmful.
The Board of Education decided to ban cellphones by January 2025 to change the behavior of students. This move holds great importance, especially since students were forced to go to class online - many by phone - more than four years ago.
School leaders believe that this ban will lessen classroom distractions (分神) that hurt learning and reduce social media dependency. They think that a strict ban can encourage direct communication among students and teachers.
William understands the reasoning behind the ban. He knows phones can be distracting, especially when students focus on social media rather than real-life conversations. He’s caught himself repeatedly checking how many people liked a story he posted recently of him and a friend on an outing.
For Angelica Zamora-Reyes, 17, a senior at Downtown Magnets High School, the ban can’t come soon enough. She has experienced the downsides of phones. Despite using her phone for good, like keeping in touch with family, she also recognizes the problems, such as comparing their clothes, weight and likes on social media.
In general, the idea of banning cellphones creates debate, and many students see both good and bad points.
12. What can be learned about William from paragraph 1?
A. He is glued to his phone. B. He is a sixth grader now.
C. He prefers to write letters. D. He often makes phone calls.
13. What does the underlined word “astonishment” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Creativity. B. Surprise. C. Discussion. D. Interest.
14. What do school leaders hope to achieve by applying the ban?
A. Teachers will care more about students.
B. Every classroom will get clean and tidy.
C. Students will break free from cellphones.
D. Parents will speak in support of the rule.
15. What is Angelica’s opinion about the ban?
A. It’ll force her to lose weight. B. She welcomes the decision.
C. It’ll benefit service providers. D. She is against the new rule.

A long time ago, I was travelling around Australia with two friends when I decided to go my own way and take a sailing trip around the Whitsunday Islands. It wasn’t that we didn’t get along any more, but one had to work in Sydney and the other had a flight to catch, and I decided not to let their plans stop me from seeing everything the Gold Coast had to offer.
I joined a catamaran cruise (双体船巡游), armed with a full bag of snacks. I figured this would be the best way to make friends. Everyone on the ship, except me, was with a group of friends, so I focused on taking photos of the beauty of the water and beyond with my camera, trying not to appear like a lonely bystander.
As we sailed, I found an island and moved to the back of the ship for the perfect shot. I needed something to lean on (倚靠), and there it was — a metal box with a lid (盖子). I placed my arms on it, only to realize it was a hot barbecue, heating up for lunch.
Suddenly, I screamed in pain as my arms touched the hot box. I pulled away quickly, but at first, no one took my cries seriously when I said I was in a huge pain. The captain of the ship was hesitant (犹豫的) to use the limited water supply on my injury, and I had no friends to comfort me.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Over time, I shout less. My kids laugh more. They’re more at ease and less scared that I’m going to go off on them. They seem more confident, too, and able to express their feelings.
I’m still learning. And that’s what parenthood is all about: improving over time and doing the best we can with what we’ve got.

If you’ve ever played on a sports team or been to gym class you probably know the practice. First, you do some warm-ups. Then you stretch (拉伸). Exercises and activities follow. At the end of the exercise, you do more stretches.
For years, coaches and gym teachers have believed that stretching helps athletes perform better, and suffer fewer injuries.
【答案】8. A 9. A 10. D 11.

【答案】12. A 13. B 14. C 15. B

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡相应位置作答。

【答案】 Gradually, my arms turned purple, and a girl finally believed my pain was real. She rushed over, her eyes filled with concern. “We need to cool down those burns,” she said urgently. Then, she told the severe situation to the captain. The captain also realized the need for immediate action, and used some of the water supply to help. After that, the girl offered me burn cream she borrowed from her friends. As we chatted, I was surprised to know that she was from my hometown. We quickly became friends, and with her as my guide, I was welcomed into her circle of friends.
After introducing myself to her friends, I pulled out the snacks I had brought along. We all sat around, munching on the snacks, sharing stories and laughter as we took in the stunning views of the Whitsundays. The sun was setting, casting a golden glow over the Gold Coast, and I knew this was a moment to capture. I grabbed my camera and suggested we take a group photo. Everyone, including the captain, gathered around. The camera clicked, freezing a memory that brought us all closer together — a memory of friendship, adventure, and the beauty of the Australian coast.
