B In a heartwarming tale from Georgia, a 72-year-old senior recently celebrated his college graduation in cinema studies, an achievement made even more special by the presence of his proud 99-year-old mother. Sam Kaplan of Lawrenceville decided to start on his educational journey at Georgia Gwinnett College in 2019, half a century after he had firstly chosen not to get higher education following his high school graduation in 1969. The catalyst for his return to academia came when he heard a radio announcement about a degree programme in cinema studies. Recalling that moment, Kaplan said, “I was driving down the highway when I heard about the degree programme. The next exit led to Collinsville, so I immediately exited, and within five minutes, I was enrolling in classes. I’ve always had a passion for writing and storytelling. I longed to transform my narratives into screenplays, but I realized I needed the basic knowledge to do so.” Kaplan admitted that the journey was a mix of anxiety and excitement, but it proved to be greatly rewarding. He graduated with a 3.975 grade point average and perfect grade honours; majoring in cinema and media arts, and had desires to continue creating screenplays in the future. “It was an exciting and nerve-wracking (神经紧张的) challenge. Re-recognizing myself with the art of studying and communicating with fellow students was a lot of fun,” he told FOX5 Atlanta. The most heartwarming thing of Kaplan’s graduation day was the presence of his mother, 99-year-old Virginia Kaplan, during the ceremony. Virginia expressed her huge pride, saying, “I am so proud of him. He faced numerous challenges but insisted, and I am delighted, pleased, and extremely proud.” The mother also added, “With his new degree, he’s going to stand out in whatever he does. Who knows, I might even make an appearance in the movies.” 4. What’s the purpose of the first paragraph? A. To provide background information. B. To introduce the main idea. C. To serve as a comment on education. D. To set an example for the old. 5. What aroused his desire to attend college at such old age? A. His accidental access to a radio programme. B. His anxiety about his retirement. C. His mother’s timely encouragement. D. His regretful life experiences as a story-teller. 6. What do we infer from the last paragraph? A. The mother desires to star in a film. B. Kaplan takes much pride in himself. C. Kaplan is excellent at whatever he does. D. Kaplan’s mother offers him unshakeable support. 7. What can we conclude from the text? A. Failure is the mother of success. B. It’s never too late to follow a dream. C. The good seaman is known in bad weather. D. All things in their being are good for something. C While we race into a future where we outsource (外包) most of our problem-solving to artificial intelligence, the greatest threat is not super intelligent machinery. It’s mindlessly putting too much trust in Big Tech and not enough trust in the power of our own minds. A philosophy of artful thinking is a good way to avoid this. To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions. This approach taps into the cognitive (认知的) resources that are spread throughout our bodies but often go unused. Changing how we think is hard work. And it starts with a mindfulness practice. Accessing artful intelligence requires being mindful of how we think with our body, how we use our limbs (四肢), organs, and emotions to make sense of the world. Be mindful of all the different messages your body is sending you as well as the different roles and functions your body actions can play. For example, gesturing (做手势) in conversations is not just communicative. These movements often help the speaker to smooth out their thought process and assist in getting the words out. Today, Big Tech is pushing a message of artificial-intelligence craziness and fear. What makes you stuck in it? It’s seeing the same things wherever you look. Big Tech gives you screens, hoping that your attention will always be attracted by their devices. If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus. Remember everything is born of a choice. Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do, what we hope to achieve by using these technological tools, will not weaken our humanity. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Mindful living is an art, and each of us has to train to be an artist.” 8. What can we learn about artful thinking? A. It simplifies problem-solving process. B. It focuses on developing our brains. C. It prevents us from over-relying on AI D. It helps promote high-tech machinery. 9. What is supposed to be included in a mindfulness practice? A. Laying emphasis on nonverbal communication. B. Concentrating on making proper gestures. C. Attaching importance to different body parts. D. Being aware of our body’s role in thinking. 10. What does the author suggest we do in the AI-filled world? A. Enhance the flexibility of attention. B. Adapt to the rise of AI. C. Avoid the interruptions from Big Tech. D. Improve the levels of focus. 11. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Artful Thinking Advances Big Tech B. Too Much Trust in AI Harms Our minds C. Physical Actions Better Cognitive Functions D. Mindfulness keeps Us Human in the Age of AI D What’s your opinion on spicy food? Some people cannot handle even the smallest amount of chili peppers in their dinner while others can’t get enough of them. Scientists have long been puzzled by why some people love the chili while others loathe it. Plenty of research has been done on the subject, dating as far back as the 1970s. Previous results showed that a love of chilies is related to childhood experiences, and that cultural influences affect our taste too. But the latest study has found that a person’s love of spicy food may be linked to his or her personality more than anything else, CBC News reported. “We have always assumed that liking contributes to intake —— we eat what we are fond of and we like what we consume. But no one has actually directly bothered to relate personality to intake of chili peppers,” said Professor John E. Hayes from Pennsylvania State University, who led the study. But before you look at the study, you should first know that “spicy” is not a taste, unlike sour, sweet, bitter and salty taste. It is, in fact, a burning feeling that you feel on the surface of your tongue. This got scientists thinking that maybe a love of spicy food is brought about by people’s longing for thrill, something they usually get from watching action movies or riding a roller coaster. In the study, 97 subjects, both male and female, were asked to fill out questionnaires about their personality, for example, whether they are keen on new experiences or tend to avoid risks. They were then given a glass of water with capsaicin, the plant chemical that makes a chili burn, mixed into it. By comparing the answers to the questionnaire and what participants said they felt about the spicy water, researchers found that those who tended to enjoy action movies or take risks were about six times more likely to enjoy the spicy water. Interestingly, we used to believe that the reason why some people can stand spicy food is that their tongues have become less sensitive to it. However, this latest study has found otherwise. “It’s not that it doesn’t burn as badly, but that you actually learn to like the burning feeling,” Hayes explained. 12. Which can take the place of the underlined word “loathe” in Paragraph 2? A. dislike. B. seek. C. accept. D. harvest. 13. What did Professor John E. Hayes and his team discover from their study? A. What we eat actually helps develop our personality. B. Males prefer spicy food than females. C. Those avoiding risks tend to hate spicy food. D. It’s wrong to treat “spicy” as a feeling. 14. Why do some people like spicy food according to the recent study? A. Because their tongues have become less sensitive. B. Because they are lacking in appetite. C. Because they want to challenge themselves. D. Because they love the burning feeling. 15. What’s the main idea of the passage? A. What to eat mainly depends on personality. B. Preference for spicy food relies largely on personality. C. Taste has nothing to with one’s experiences. D. Different people have different taste. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to productively learn from the past The past is a treasure chest filled with learning opportunities for our present and future. ____16____ Here are seven ways to open up that dirty, unassuming, beat-up old chest to find and use the treasure inside. D 【解析】 【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章主要论述了在人工智能时代,通过艺术化思考和正念练习来保持人性、避免过度依赖科技的重要性。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第一段“While we race into a future where we outsource most of our problem-solving to artificial intelligence, the greatest threat is not super intelligent machinery. It’s mindlessly putting too much trust in Big Tech and not enough trust in the power of our own minds.(当我们飞速奔向一个将大部分解决问题的工作外包给人工智能的未来时,最大的威胁并不是超级智能机器。这是盲目地把太多的信任放在了科技巨头身上,而对我们自己思想的力量却没有足够的信任)”以及第二段“A philosophy of artful thinking is a good way to avoid this. To think artfully means to solve problems using not just our brains, but also our hands, eyes, and ears, along with our emotions. This approach taps into the cognitive (认知的) resources that are spread throughout our bodies but often go unused.(艺术化思考的哲学是避免这种情况的好方法。艺术化思考意味着不仅要用大脑,还要用手、眼睛、耳朵以及情感来解决问题。这种方法利用了我们身体中分布但常常未被利用的认知资源)”可知,艺术化思考能防止我们过度依赖人工智能。故选C。 【9题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中“Changing how we think is hard work. (改变我们的思维方式是一项艰苦的工作。它始于正念练习。获取巧妙智慧需要留意我们如何用身体思考,如何用四肢、器官和情感来理解世界。注意你的身体传递给你的不同信息,以及你的身体动作可以扮演的不同角色和功能)”可知,正念练习包括意识到我们的身体在思维中所扮演的角色。故选D。 【10题详解】 推理判断题。根据第四段中“If you want to find more freedom in this AI-filled world, improve your ability to mindfully shift your attention between different objects or levels of focus.(如果你想在这个充满人工智能的世界中找到更多的自由,那就提高你在不同对象或关注水平之间有意识地转移注意力的能力)”可推知,作者建议我们在充满人工智能的世界里增强注意力的灵活性。故选A。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其最后一段“Artful thinking demands effortful mindfulness to ensure that what we do, what we hope to achieve by using these technological tools, will not weaken our humanity. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Mindful living is an art, and each of us has to train to be an artist.”(艺术化思考需要努力保持正念,以确保我们所做的,以及我们希望通过使用这些技术工具实现的目标,不会削弱我们的人性。正如一行禅师所说,“正念生活是一门艺术,我们每个人都必须训练成为艺术家。”)”可知,文章主要论述了在人工智能时代,保持正念的重要性,它能让我们保持人性,不被技术所吞噬。D选项“正念让我们在人工智能时代保持人性”最适合作为文章标题。故选D。 D What’s your opinion on spicy food? 【答案】12. A 13. C 14. D 15. Despite the rise of digital reading, there’s a unique charm in browsing through physical books, feeling their pages, and discovering unexpected gems. Moreover, bookstores often serve as cultural hubs, hosting events and fostering community engagement. Her warm smile and gentle behavior made her stand out among the sea of teachers. She was the only one who seemed to understand his conservative nature, always encouraging him to step out of his comfort zone. One day, after class, Ms Lau approached Alex with excitement shining in her eyes. “Alex, I have an offer for you,” she said, her voice filled with enthusiasm. “I am organizing a cultural exchange program to China, and I believe it would be a great opportunity for you to explore a new world.” Alex’s heart skipped a beat, the prospect of traveling to a foreign country both exciting and terrifying. He hesitated, unsure if he had the courage to start such an adventure. But Ms Lau’s firm belief in him gave him the push he needed to take a leap of faith. Under Ms Lau’s guidance, Alex began preparing for the trip. He got really interested in Chinese culture and learned about its long history and traditions.
