Some of the World’s Finest Stained Glass (彩色玻璃) Artworks
La Sainte-Chapelle, France
While many say that Paris’ must-see cathedral is Notre-Dame de Paris, Sainte-Chapelle should also be on the list. Louis Ⅸ ordered it to be built in 1239 to house the Crown of Thorns, a famous relic from Constantinople. Within the ceilings of the church are fifteen of the world’s finest stained glass windows.
The Chicago Cultural Center, the USA
While the Windy City might not house the nation’s winningest sports teams, it does have one of the world’s most eye-catching displays of stained glass. Today’s Chicago Cultural Center, which was designed as a library in 1887, has a 38-foot-tall Tiffany glass dome (圆屋顶) which is said to be the largest Tiffany dome in the world.
Erawan Museum, Thailand
The Erawan Museum, built in 1994, houses ancient, priceless Thai artworks. All of them are displayed within the building’s three floors, which are said to symbolize the three levels of the universe. Designed by German artist Jacob Schwarzkopf, the stained glass artwork shows five continents on Earth, with the sun delivering light, and therefore life, into all.
Saint Vitus Cathedral, Czech Republic
While the Czech church whose doors many travelers pass through every day was built way back in 1344, its amazing display of stained glass is a 20th-century donation from well-known Czech Art Nouveau artist Alfons Mucha. The artwork is quite fit for Prague, the city in which the stained glass is displayed. After all, it is the modern-day Czech Republic that dreamy bohemians (放荡不羁的艺术家) came from.
21. Which of the following has the longest history?
A. Erawan Museum. B. La Sainte-Chapelle.
C. Saint Vitus Cathedral. D. The Chicago Cultural Center.
22. Where should you go if you want to see the earth-themed stained glass?
A. France. B. The USA. C. Thailand. D. Czech Republic.
23. What is special about the stained glass in Prague?
A. It goes well with the city. B. It is built by Louis IX.
C. It is the largest of its kind. D. It is donated by many travelers.

When planning my wedding, I was determined not to get caught up in the “perfect day”, but to have a relaxed, informal celebration. My husband and I ended up having a lovely time.
“Pursuit of perfection is a prison,” says Moya Sarner, an NHS psychotherapist. Many of us are driven by the unconscious (下意识的) wish that if we could just have the perfect body, the perfect job and the perfect family, then we would be happy. For that reason, it can be one of the most significant barriers to happiness in life.
The psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott wrote about the importance of the “good enough mother” who meets her baby’s needs timely, but is not perfect. He said perfect is harmful. To meet every desire immediately, to pass the toy straight away whenever it is demanded slows down a baby’s growth, robbing them of the opportunity to feel frustrated (沮丧的) and learn to crawl to get the toy for themselves.
Winnicott believed that while perfection is not a virtue, tolerance of imperfection is. If we cannot develop the capacity to tolerate imperfection in ourselves and in those around us, we can have no self-confidence, no sustainable relationships and no fulfilling career. If we’re always trying to build something called a perfect life, we aren’t really living the one we’re in.
How do I know all this? I am a perfectionist in recovery. I’ve started to recognize my intolerance of imperfection — my need for certain things to be exactly as I would like them to be, from the way my husband chops his onions to my terror of being late — and it has made a huge difference to my relationship and my parenting. How can you be a good partner if you expect everyone else to fit your own narrow expectations? How can your child grow if they sense that they always need to color precisely inside the lines you’ve drawn out for them?
We need to go further than tolerating imperfections. We need to learn to appreciate their humanity and beauty. Imperfections are why people will pay a calligrapher to handwrite invitations when a computer can produce a flawless (完美的) version of the same script for less money and in less time. So for a more delicious life, and ultimately a better one, I choose imperfectionism.
24. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By presenting a successful ceremony. B. By showing her firm determination.
C. By describing her personal experience. D. By introducing her perfect marriage.
25. What can we learn from the example of the “good enough mother”?
A. Raising a child brings a mother much joy. B. Pursuing perfection is the duty of mothers.
C. Meeting babies’ demands is very challenging. D. Responding instantly impacts babies’ growth.
26. What is the function of the two questions at the end of Paragraph 5?
A. To shift topics. B. To make assumptions. C. To arouse interest. D. To encourage thinking.
27. Which of the following might the author approve of?
A. A miss is as good as a mile. B. Haste makes waste.
C. Close enough is good enough. D. Practice makes perfect.

Anxious about returning to work after a career break? You post about your troubles online and two strangers reply. Stranger 1: “I understand your anxiety; your courage matters.” Stranger 2: “I’ve struggled with the same problem. Just jump in!” Studies show most find Stranger 1 more empathetic — but it’s often a chatbot. Surprised?
Research reveals chatbots frequently outperform humans in empathy (同理心). A 2023 study found 80% of patients preferred chatbots’ response to doctors’ advice. Similarly, a 2024 experiment showed even when humans were paid to create thoughtful replies, they still fell short of ChatGPT’s sympathy.
The secret to the chatbots’ success lies in mistakes humans make. When humans see someone in pain, we often share personal stories (“I’ve struggled too”) or rush to give advice (“Do this!”). While well-meaning, rushing to share opinions can minimize someone’s pain, and shifting the focus to ourselves weakens hope to be heard. Chatbots, however, avoid these errors. Without personal experiences or urgency to solve problems, they focus entirely on the speaker. In a 2024 study, Microsoft’s Bing Chat scored higher than humans by using a three-step method: explaining people’s struggles, acknowledging and justifying how they might feel, and asking follow-up questions.
Humans can also adopt similar strategies like “looping for understanding”—repeating others’ words in their own terms and checking correctness (“Do I have that right?”). Chatbots are natural loopers, and when humans learn it, they better understand others’ emotions and make them feel heard. These skills extend beyond strengthening family and friend bonds: dozens of studies show managers and employers using such methods tend to have more loyal, effective, and productive employees.
Despite AI’s impressive listening skills, it has limits. Chatbots repeat formulaic (公式化的) responses (“I hear you”) that feel robotic over time. They can’t feel or truly care for us, and studies show most human beings still want to engage with other humans. Some of the bugs of human connection are also, in fact, features. Chatbots can’t roll their eyes or leave our texts unanswered. But the fact that we often must earn human empathy, and that it comes from limited beings who sacrifice (牺牲) to be there for us, is part of its beauty.
28. What is the author’s purpose in quoting the two strangers’ replies?
A. To compare two ways of giving advice.
B. To introduce a psychological phenomenon.
C. To suggest how to overcome anxiety.
D. To criticize human’s communication.
29. What does the underlined phrase “fell short of” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Differed from. B. Failed to match.
C. Did better than. D. Were in need of.
30. What can humans learn from chatbots’ empathy strategies?
A. To provide direct solutions.
B. To stress shared stories.
C. To correct speakers’ mistakes.
D. To avoid self-centered responses.
31. What does the author want to say in the last paragraph?
A. AI is an impressive listener. B. Human empathy is valuable.
C. AI responds to human’s pain calmly. D. There are problems with human interaction.
D
The experience of touch is key to babies beginning to recognize themselves in a mirror, new research shows, which usually happens when babies are about a year and a half old. “Babies pulling on their toes (脚趾) or hitting lightly their fingers are not just playing,” says Jeffrey Lockman, senior author of the research paper. “They are trying to recognize themselves.”
The researchers began by placing small vibrating (震动的) discs on the foreheads of babies around 14 months old, before the usual age at which self-recognition occurs. In response to the vibration, they would reach up and touch the discs. Next, researchers turned the children to face a mirror and watched as they reached up to touch the discs. The researchers then had the children perform the standard mirror-mark test for self-recognition in which a small mark of paint or makeup was placed on each child’s face. If the child looked in the mirror and touched the mark on their own face or said words like their name or “me”, they demonstrated self-recognition.
The researchers also observed a control group of children exposed to the laboratory experience with mirrors but not the vibrating discs. The children who touched their face more frequently recognized themselves in the mirror about two months earlier, on average, than those who typically first begin to recognize-themselves in a mirror. This indicates a possible mechanism that self-awareness can develop based on engaged experiences that human babies naturally generate.
The study challenges a long-standing assumption that self-recognition in early childhood is somehow hardwired. For a long time, scientists believed early recognition in the mirror was a built-in function of human brains and those of our closest primate (灵长类) relatives, rather than linked to sensory or motor experiences.
“Interventions for babies who have issues related to motor skills are typically focused on reaching for objects in the external world and controlling them,” Lockman says. “According to our findings, reaching to the body is equally important and exploring the body is the gateway to self-knowledge.”
32. Why do babies hit their fingers lightly at an early age?
A. To explore their surroundings. B. To build up self-identification.
C. To signal their self-recognition. D. To engage in playful activities.
33. How did the babies in the experiment form self-recognition?
A. Through active exploration. B. By seeing vibration in mirrors.
C. Through word-related response. D. By copying others’ movements.
34. What is a common misunderstanding of early-childhood self-recognition?
A. It is an inborn capability. B. It develops through learning.
C. It is related to experiences. D. It exists in men and animals.
35. What do the findings suggest about treating children’s motor delays?
A. Staring at themselves in the mirror. B. Intervening as early as possible.
C. Enhancing external motor activities. D. Having interactions with their bodies.

Jack was a bright and curious child, always eager to learn new things and explore the mysterious world about science. However, he often found himself in disagreement with his mother. His mother was always busy with her work and she didn’t have enough time to learn about his interests and passions.
One day, Jack came home from school feeling particularly excited. He just found a sci-fi book about an adventure on the moon. Upon arriving at home, he couldn’t tear himself away from the book. He read and read until it was dark. Having finished reading it, he couldn’t wait to share it with his mother, only to be told that he should focus on more practical subjects like math and history, which would help him get into a good college and have a successful career.
Jack couldn’t understand why his mother didn’t see the value in what he was doing. He felt that she was holding him back and not allowing him to pursue his true interests. “Why can’t you see how important this is to me?” Jack asked his mother angrily. “I’m never going to be happy if I have to spend my life doing things that I show no interest in just because they are practical or make you proud.”
The once peaceful home was filled with tension and anger. His mother’s voice grew louder as she shouted, “You can’t just do whatever you want! You should be responsible for your future!” Jack, fueled by his own frustration, shot back, “I am tired of you always telling me what to do! I am not a child anymore! You only care about your own feeling! You never thought about my feeling!” They were so caught up in their own anger and hurt that they failed to see how their words and actions were affecting each other.

M: No, it isn’t. Nor are noodles. But yogurt, fish and tomatoes are there.
W: Oh well, I suppose we eat plenty of them. Why are these foods so healthy?
M: It’s said that they can reduce the risks of high blood pressure, heart disease and certain cancers.
W: Maybe I will start including them in our meals. Are there any foods on the list that we don’t have yet?
M: Nuts and greens are something we already eat plenty of. And although our type of rice — the white kind — isn’t on the list, brown rice is.
W: Then I think we will switch to that to keep the family healthy. Superfoods sound like a very tasty way to keep fit.

W: Is it a credit card problem?
M: Yes. My credit card information was stolen. When I got my bill in the mail, I saw there were many unfamiliar purchases on it.
W: That’s terrible. Did they take a lot of money?
M: Yes, and I am very upset because the bank is not helping me quickly. I have talked to many different managers already.
W: Doesn’t the bank’s owner need to make the decision to give you your money back?
M: No. I just have to prove that these purchases were not made by me.
W: I hope you can fix this problem soon. Something similar happened to my husband’s mother recently. She was tricked into giving away some important information over the phone.
M: I think the person who stole my information got it from the Internet. I bought a collection of movies recently. I won’t be doing that again unless the website is sure to be safe. It’s honestly my fault for being careless.
W: You can never be too careful. Well, your problem is inspiring me to look into protecting my account better. I think I can pay my bank more to help me.

18. What are the arguments based on?
A. Language researches. B. Academic journals. C. Medical interviews.
19. What is the benefit of speaking more languages?
A. To improve your memory. B. To make you stronger.
C. To save more languages.
20. What can improve a research’s accuracy?
A. Accepting whatever the Internet says.
B. Mastering more than one language.
C. Referring to more previous studies.
A 19. A 20. C
According to an article in The Telegraph, learning a foreign language is not only great for your resume and for traveling, but it will make you smarter and better at coming to a decision. The article refers to several studies from medical journals published by the top universities in the U. S. These studies have shown that the brains of people who speak more than one language function differently from those who only speak one language. There are three major benefits of speaking more than one language. First, you become better at performing more than one task at a time. Your memory improves and your ability to observe things gets better. You can still gain those benefits as an adult but not as strongly as a younger person could. At the same time, the more languages you know, the stronger those benefits become no matter how old you are. Since several informed studies are mentioned in the article, it shows that the conclusions made about learning different languages are truthful. It is important to have different views when discussing a topic. The more scientific studies are repeated, the more accurate they are. If a scientist only tried their experiment one time, they cannot ensure the accuracy of their results.

C 25. D 26. D 27. C
根据文章第一段“When planning my wedding, I was determined not to get caught up in the “perfect day”, but to have a relaxed, informal celebration. My husband and I ended up having a lovely time.(在计划我的婚礼时,我决定不要陷入“完美的一天”,而是要有一个轻松,非正式的庆祝活动。我丈夫和我度过了一段美好的时光。)”可知,作者通过讲述自己筹备婚礼时摒弃追求完美、选择轻松庆祝的个人经历来引出文章关于追求完美的话题,所以作者是通过描述个人经历来引入话题的。故选C。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“He said perfect is harmful. To meet every desire immediately, to pass the toy straight away whenever it is demanded slows down a baby’s growth, robbing them of the opportunity to feel frustrated (沮丧的) and learn to crawl to get the toy for themselves.(他说完美是有害的。立刻满足每一个需求,在孩子一要玩具的时候就马上把玩具递过去,这会减缓婴儿的成长,剥夺了他们感到沮丧以及学会自己爬过去拿玩具的机会)”可知,从“足够好的母亲”的例子中可以推断出,母亲立刻回应婴儿的需求(即追求完美回应)会影响婴儿的成长,让他们失去自我探索和成长的机会。故选D。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。文章第五段结尾的两个问题“How can you be a good partner if you expect everyone else to fit your own narrow expectations? How can your child grow if they sense that they always need to color precisely inside the lines you’ve drawn out for them?(如果你期望每个人都能满足你狭隘的期望,你怎么能成为一个好的伴侣呢?如果你的孩子觉得他们总是需要在你为他们画的线条内精确地涂上颜色,他们怎么能成长呢?)”是在前面讲述了自己作为完美主义者认识到自己对不完美的不容忍以及这种态度对人际关系和育儿的影响之后提出的。这两个问题是为了让读者思考,如果总是期望别人符合自己狭隘的期望,就无法成为好伴侣,孩子也无法真正成长,鼓励读者进行思考。故选D。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“We need to go further than tolerating imperfections. We need to learn to appreciate their humanity and beauty. Imperfections are why people will pay a calligrapher to handwrite invitations when a computer can produce a flawless (完美的) version of the same script for less money and in less time. So for a more delicious life, and ultimately a better one, I choose imperfectionism.(我们需要做的不仅仅是容忍不完美。我们需要学会欣赏他们的人性和美。不完美是人们愿意花钱请书法家手写邀请函的原因,而电脑可以用更少的钱和更短的时间制作出同样的脚本的完美版本。因此,为了更美好的生活,最终更好的生活,我选择了不完美主义)”可推知,作者会同意的是“差不多就行(了)”,认为达到一定程度、接近预期标准就可以接受,不完美也行。故选C。
C
B 29. B 30. D 31. B

根据第一段中的“Studies show most find Stranger 1 more empathetic — but it’s often a chatbot. Surprised?(研究表明,大多数人认为陌生人1更有同理心——但它通常是一个聊天机器人。惊讶吗?)”可知,作者引用两个陌生人的回复是为了引出聊天机器人更具同理心这一心理现象。故选B项。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中的“Research reveals chatbots frequently outperform humans in empathy (同理心). A 2023 study found 80% of patients preferred chatbots’ response to doctors’ advice. Similarly, a 2024 experiment showed even when humans were paid to create thoughtful replies, they still fell short of ChatGPT’s sympathy.(研究表明,聊天机器人在同理心方面经常胜过人类。
根据第三段中的“When humans see someone in pain, we often share personal stories (“I’ve struggled too”) or rush to give advice (“Do this!”). While well-meaning, rushing to share opinions can minimize someone’s pain, and shifting the focus to ourselves weakens hope to be heard. Chatbots, however, avoid these errors. Without personal experiences or urgency to solve problems, they focus entirely on the speaker.(当人类看到有人处于痛苦中时,我们经常会分享个人经历(“我也经历过挣扎”)或急于给出建议(“这么做!”)。虽然是出于好意,但急于发表看法可能会轻视对方的痛苦,而将焦点转移到自己身上则会削弱对方被倾听的期望。然而,聊天机器人避免了这些错误。没有个人经历或解决问题的紧迫感,它们完全专注于说话者。)”可知,人类可以从聊天机器人身上学到避免以自我为中心的回应。故选D项。
31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中的“Despite AI’s impressive listening skills, it has limits.
B 33. A 34. A 35. D
根据第一段中““Babies pulling on their toes (脚趾) or hitting lightly their fingers are not just playing,” says Jeffrey Lockman, senior author of the research paper. “They are trying to recognize themselves.”(该研究论文的资深作者杰弗里·洛克曼说:“婴儿拉自己的脚趾或轻轻敲击手指,不仅仅是在玩耍。他们是在试图识别自己。”)可知,婴儿早期轻轻敲击手指是为了建立自我识别。故选B项。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The researchers began by placing small vibrating (震动的) discs on the foreheads of babies around 14 months old, before the usual age at which self recognition occurs. In response to the vibration, they would reach up and touch the discs. Next, researchers turned the children to face a mirror and watched as they reached up to touch the discs. 【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“The study challenges a long standing assumption that self recognition in early childhood is somehow hardwired.(这项研究挑战了一个长期存在的假设,即幼儿的自我识别在某种程度上是天生的)”可知,对幼儿自我识别的常见误解是它是一种天生的能力。故选A项。
根据最后一段中““Interventions for babies who have issues related to motor skills are typically focused on reaching for objects in the external world and controlling them,” Lockman says. “According to our findings, reaching to the body is equally important and exploring the body is the gateway to self knowledge.(洛克曼说:“针对有运动技能问题的婴儿的干预措施通常集中在伸手去够外界的物体并控制它们。根据我们的发现,触摸自己的身体同样重要,探索身体是获得自我认知的途径。”)”可知,研究结果表明治疗儿童运动迟缓需要让他们与自己的身体进行互动。故选D项。

Learning with Short Videos: Tips for Students
Short videos are not just for fun — they can be great tools for learning. Many students use them to study English, science, or even history. But how can you make sure you learn well from them? Here are some simple tips.
Choose the right videos
Not all short videos are good for learning. Look for ones made by teachers or educational channels. ____36____ For example, if you’re learning grammar, choose a video that explains just one rule at a time.
Watch with a goal
Before you press “play”, ask yourself: “What do I want to learn from this?” Maybe it’s a new English word or a math formula. ____37____ This helps you stay focused, not just watch passively.
Don’t watch too many at once
It’s easy to keep scrolling to the next video, but your brain needs time to take in the information. Watch 1-2 videos, then stop for a while. ____38____ You can also write down key points or explain what you learned to a friend.
Use subtitles (字幕)
Most learning videos have subtitles. Turn them on, especially for English videos. ____39____ You can read along and learn how words are spelled and used in sentences.
Practice what you learn
Watching is just the first step. To really learn, you need to practice. If a video teaches a new dance move, try it yourself. ____40____ This way, you’ll remember better and make the learning stick.
A. They should be clear and not too fast.
B. Keep this question in your mind while watching.
C. Some videos can help you relax after a long day.
D. This helps you take in the knowledge more deeply.
E. You can also use them to check your pronunciation.
F. This makes it easier to follow, even if the speaker talks fast.
G. If it’s a science experiment, try to do a simple version at home.

_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Jack rushed into his bedroom and locked the door heavily. He lay on the bed, huddling himself in the quilt. What he really wanted to do was to cut himself off from the whole world, especially from his mother. He couldn't figure out why his mother didn't understand him and why she forced him to do something he didn't like. Slowly, he fell asleep while thinking.Suddenly he was awakened, hearing his mother's voice outside the door, which was filled with apologies and tenderness. His mother promised him that she would respect his interests in the future.
When Jack heard his mother’s words, regretful tears rolled down his face. He realized that everything his mother did was totally for the sake of his future and what he said hurt his mother's heart hard. It occurred to him that he had never showed his gratitude to his mother. He couldn’t wait to open the door and said thank you to his mother, who was standing in the doorway. He also promised his mother that he would study hard in practical subjects. Finaly, misunderstanding cleared, they hugged each other tightly with a joyful smile.

Yes, and I am very upset because the bank is not helping me quickly. I have talked to many different managers already. Doesn't the bank's owner need to make the decision to give you your money back? No, I just have to prove that these purchases were not made by me. I hope you can fix this problem soon. Something similar happened to my husband's mother recently. SHE was tricked to giving away some important information over the phone. I think the person who stole my information got IT from the internet. I bought a collection of movies recently. I won't be doing that again unless the website is sure to be safe. It's honestly my fault for being careless. You can never be too careful. Well, your problem is inspiring me to look into protecting my account Better. I think I can pay my bank more to help me. According to an article in the telegraph, learning a foreign language is not only great for your resume and for traveling, but IT will make you smarter and Better at coming to a decision.
